On april 7, 2009, chrysler llc submitted to odi a defect information report indicating that it would recall approximately 42,469 model year 2002 through 2003 jeep liberty vehicles to remedy a defect that can result in upper ball joint separation while driving (09v-119).the affected vehicles were built from may 2002 through september 2002 and originally sold or currently registered in connecticut, delaware, district of columbia, kentucky, illinois, indiana, iowa, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, virginia, west virginia and wisconsin.according to chrysler, the front suspension upper control arm ball joint may experience a loss of lubrication which can lead to corrosion, accelerated wear, and possible separation while driving. chrysler's recall procedure instructs dealers to replace the front upper control arm assemblies on all affected vehicles. although the specific cause for the defect in the recalled production range has not been determined, odi's analysis of upper ball joint separations by vehicle build date shows a clearly defined and significant spike in the rate of separation during the five month production range covered by 09v-119, which accounts for only 11 percent of subject vehicle production but approximately 70 percent of separation incidents.seventy-four (74) of the upper ball joint separation incidents identified by odi occurred in vehicles produced in the recall months, resulting in a separation rate of 174 per 100,000 vehicles.the separation rate in the remaining subject vehicle population is significantly lower, at 9 incidents per 100,000 vehicles.at this time, the data do not show a defect trend in the subject vehicles built outside the recall range after approximately 6-8 years in service. this engineering analysis is closed.

Odi has received 22 complaints of upper ball joint separation on model year 2002 and 2003 jeep liberty 4x4 vehicles.the separation of an upper ball joint on either of the front wheels can result in the affected front wheel collapsing, possibly resulting in vehicle disablement and causing a loss of vehicle control.there is one complaint of a failure at 75 mph, 1 failure at 60 mph, 3 failures at 40 mph, 2 failures at 25 mph, 7 failures occurring while the driver was pulling into the flow of traffic and 2 failures that occurred when the driver was attempting to make a left turn across the flow of oncoming traffic.one complainant alleged almost being hit by an oncoming truck as a result of the vehicle suddenly being disabled in the flow of crossing traffic.another reported the collapse of the front right wheel when making a left turn caused the vehicle to swerve to the right, as a result of which the vehicle ended up in a ditch just missing a collision with a telephone pole.chrysler llc., is continuing to investigate the cause of upper ball joint separations in the subject vehicles.odi has upgraded the investigation to an engineering analysis (ea08-008) to continue to asses the scope, frequency and safety consequences of the alleged defect.

Left driver side, upper ball joint separated from control arm. wheel collapsed outward. fortunately, it happened after leaving the interstate driving 70 miles per hour. entering service station wheel collapsed. happened to talk to an individual who was aware of the problem. individual said that this is a current and on going problem with today's vehicles. the front components are being designed so they cannot be maintained properly. lack of grease fittings, pressed in joint design on ball joints to control arm , instead of re enforced with bolts or other safe measures. individual stated that it is occurring on most all makes and models. instead of just replacing the defected ball joint, the control arm, with no other defect, but this, has to be replaced, costing even more money. has been reported, that deaths have occurred. the mental impact and feeling insecure after a fix is ongoing. i see more deaths and accidents occurring because of this problem. thank you. *tr

The support straps for the fuel tank failed suddenly after making a left turn. the fuel tank contacted the road surface for a short time (1 minute) before the vehicle could be stopped. the rear corner of the tank (passenger side) was damaged to the point that fuel leaked from the tank. both support straps were broken after the incident. the tank was approximately 1/4 full prior to the incident. both of the support straps failed near the bottom of the fuel tank. the remaining pieces of the support straps were still fastened to the frame and the fasteners were still in place after the incident. both support straps were severely rusted. although we are disappointed that this incident happened, we are grateful that no one was hurt. we realize the outcome could have been a lot worse. *tr

At only 66,000 miles original owner directly from a 4-year corporate lease, a large corrosion/rust hole through bottom of passenger side body frame rail has been discovered, where lower control arm meets the frame rail. breakage of the rear frame rail is pending due to rust hole, would likely cause a spontaneous loss of steering, injury or death. jeep is too dangerous to drive. must spend $2,000 to try to replace frame rail. contacted chrysler but they would not fix due to year of vehicle, corrosion recalls are 2004-2007. the entire underside of vehicle is rusted and only a matter of time before all other components rust through including suspension and brake lines as well as lesser parts already going like rear window currently rusted shut and engine parts with corrosion beginning. i live in nj which is included in the salt belt -states that use salts to de-ice roadways in winter, so the recall on my would not affect my vehicle regardless of it's year. it is my opinion that there is a major corrosion/rust issue in the earlier jeep liberty models which makes these vehicles very dangerous to drive. buyers beware especially in the northeast. have a thorough inspection for rust before buying any used jeep liberty.

I was advised by my jeep dealership that my 2003 jeep liberty needs both the left and right front upper control arms replaced. 2003 jeep liberty vehicles manufactured from may 2002 through september 2002 have been recalled due to the failure of this component. the chrysler recall is no. j17 (nhtsa campaign id 09v119000; nhtsa action number ea08008). my jeep liberty was manufactured in october 2002 - one month after the recall period and therefore isn't eligible for this recall. in researching chrysler recall no j17, the root cause of the upper control arm issue was never determined. it was only determined that 70% of incidents occurred during this time period while only accounting for 11% of vehicle production (a spike). i argue that since my jeep was manufactured one month after the recall period, and requires upper control arm replacement, it is the same issue experience by vechicles under the j17 recall. i ask that either: (1) chrysler replace my upper control arms free of charge -or- (2) nhtsa / odi extend the recall to cover the remaining 2003 jeep liberty vehicles not covered under j17. i ask for nhtsa / odi's assistance in seeking reimbursement from chrysler and investigating extension of the j17 recall.

I have a jeep liberty limited 2003 leased on october 2002. ive had to bring the vehicle in for service seven times for the same problem and the dealer has not repaired it. the problem is that while driving at speeds anywhere from 30 - 65 and while trying to accelerate from a complete stop the vehicle will start to buck and hesitate, the speedometer will swing back and forth and the vehicle suddenly loses speed and then regains it. i've almost been hit by another vehicle on the palisades parkway on three separate occasions. the failure started on april 28,2004 at 32,000 miles it now has 34,600 miles and it has reoccurred after all seven times of going in for repair of same condition after the dealership at central ave chrysler jeep in yonkers, claims to have repaired it. the dealership will not honor the warranty by properly repairing or replacing vehicle. *ak

I own a jeep liberty 2003(manufactured in apirl 2003). i have owned the car from january of 2004. couple of weeks before(july 17th 2004)i was getting in to the freeway entry ramp, the car suddenly veered right and i tried to adjust it but the car veered violently to the left and spun a 360 and a partial 180 before i ended up on the other side of the freeway crossing 4 lanes of traffic. fortunately, i did not get injured and the vehicle was not damaged nor did anybody else. i went on the internet later to find out that there was a major recall for the same incident for jeep liberties that were manufactured till march of 2003 and mine is manufactured in apirl. the scary thing about this is i cannont predict when this can happen again and it has already happed twice after the above listed incident on normal roads. *ak

Vehicle pulls to the right at all times on any road surface. vehicle has been taken to dealer 4 times since date of purchase (august 2003) with no resolution. alignment has been check every time. dealer claims to have adjusted the alignment more to the left in order to compensate the vehicle's pull to the right, but the problem still exists. the dealer rode in the vehicle and observed the problem. the dealer stated that older model jeep libertys tend to drive to the right, even when aligned properly. (this vehicle was manufactured in july 2002). this vehicle is difficult to drive because i must constantly pull the steering to the left in order to stay on the road, and i feel that i could lose control very easily.*ak

Since purchasing in sept 02 have had vehicle in for service six times for numerous concerns, repeatedly for a clunking/grinding sound from the psgr sd ft, a severe pulling of the vehicle to the right, a vibration when driving hwy speeds, and intermittent engine misses. dealership twice replaced the front end strut mounts which elimated the grind/clunk, but cannot ascertain the problem with the vehicle's instability (pulling) on the road nor with the engine misfires. an adjustment (off spec) to the alignment was performed by dealership which in turn caused the vehicle to pull to the left and also encouraged more steering vibration and worsened mpg - avg 13.21 mpg where initially i got 18 -20 mpg. dealership claims that b/c roads are angled for water runoff, this likewise keeps my vehicle from staying on the road (!?) am currently beginning to experience a clunking noise from rear passenger side wheel area, but have not yet brought it to dealer's attention.*jb

On 08/03/09, i had my 2003 jeep liberty towed to my local 5-star chrysler dealer (mileage = 148520). the right front ball joint had broken while i was making a turn in the parking lot. the tow truck driver had to pull my vehicle up onto the flatbed, as it was not possible to drive it, not even a few inches. during the loading of my vehicle onto the flatbed of the tow truck, the right front axle had come apart from the wheel. the service department had completed the necessary work to put my vehicle back together and indicated that it was all taken care of under the recall that was in the system. i had not known about the 2nd recall. i took my vehicle to the dealer for an oil change & courtesy vehicle inspection on 10/07/09 (mileage = 151838). the courtesy inspection indicated that the suspension/steering was checked and ok. on 12/23/09, i took my vehicle to the dealer for an oil change & courtesy vehicle inspection (mileage = 158083), and i indicated that the right front wheel had begun making a weird noise again. i was told that it was it was fairly common, especially if the housing got wet inside. the courtesy inspection indicated that the suspension/steering was checked and ok. on 03/19/10, i had my vehicle towed to the dealer (mileage = 161533) because it felt like i had a flat tire while i was driving, although there was nothing wrong with the tires. it ended up that the right front axle had to be replaced. at first i was told the damage was due to normal wear & tear and high mileage. as they began looking at it more closely, they commented that they had not seen one this badly damaged. it was repaired & ready for pick up on 03/31/10. i am in the process of finding out more information on the right front suspension issues because i do not see how after all the inspections, it went from being ok to being told that they had not had one come in that was that badly damaged.

We purchased a 2003 jeep liberty on december 4, 2002, in kent, ohio, that was manufactured in november 2002. we have lived in akron, ohio, continuously since 2002. we drive the jeep in the eastern suburbs of cleveland, ohio, very frequently to visit family and to take our son to school. ohio is a salt belt state, and akron and the eastern suburbs of cleveland experience significantly more snowfall during the winter than other areas of ohio due to lake effect. the right front upper control arm assembly became loose, almost to the point of failure, and was replaced on april 26, 2008, at our cost of $597.87. on december 17, 2007 nhtsa opened preliminary evaluation pe07-q62 for 2002 -2003 jeep libertys based on complaints of front suspension upper ball joint separation. on april 7, 2009, chrysler notified the nhtsa that

While driving slowly across a bridge, my upper ball joint disconnected causing the passenger side front tire to fall off. no apparent warning that vehicle was in need of repair. no one was injured. had vehicle towed and control arm: upper ball joint replaced. the lower ball joints were replaced on 12/29/2006 due to the recall in 06' of the lower ball joints -- it appears the upper ball joints have the same issue. my concern now is when will the other side go bad? hopefully i won't be traveling at a high rate of speed when the other side goes, because i fear the outcome. it only had 61,000 miles at the time -- can i assume the side that was repaired is safe to drive another 61,000. it's not worth putting my life and/or others in danger. how can chrysler assure me that it is safe? i feel this is a dangerous and premature failure of this part and should be covered by chrysler, just for safety alone. *tr

I have a 2002 jeep liberty. i am having a ball joint problem with my jeep by daimler chrysler similar to the dodge. i purchased my jeep (new) in january of 2003.i began hearing a scrubbing noise from the front of my vehicle in approx april 2003. i took it to a dealer near maxwell afb, alabama; they stated that because of recent rain something may have been wet/ moist. i continued with my trip back to dc. i didn't really notice the noise anymore. approx middle october i had a flat tire (front passenger). it was replaced by aaa contractor & fixed by a tire dealer. when i inquired what went wrong, they didn't/couldn't find anything. on october 31, 2003 i took my truck to be serviced at a alexandria, virginia jeep dealer for a 22,000 mile service (preventative care). so i dished out approx 270.00 for this service. two days later i noticed a scrubbing noise again. this time it was louder and was horrible! i visited the va jeep dealer furious that they just serviced my truck & i started hearing the noise. i was told that my front ball joint needed to be replaced, it just was a bad part and it was covered under warranty. i received a call the next day that the part was in but wasn't able to bring it in until two approx weeks later. the service tech assured my the truck was safe to drive but try to get the part replaced soon. i began to notice the truck pulling to the right & steering wheel violently shaking. the dealer don't provide loaner cars and i work on military base, i still couldn't get to work. at this point i blamed the dealer for my inconvenience. they put the part on december 10. they told my that it was recalled since the last time i had been in. the noise had stopped but not the shaking of the wheel and the pulling to the right. i returned my car to the service department (december 16). they performed a front end alignment. today is december 19 and my truck is still shaking and pulling to the right. i am available for contact if necessary.*ak

I only stopped to realize that there was a problem when i saw that there was an investigation going. we lost control of our 2003 jeep liberty in the winter of 2003. we did not report it as it was a hill that had ice. we had the car in 4wd low and never went beyond 2 miles an hour. the car continued to slide and slide and there was no control over it and we ended up hitting the mountain, the better of the 2 scenarios the other going off a cliff. every hill i drive i have the same problem mostly when there is snow on the ground (even fresh non-ice) snow if there is any degree of angle to the hill, i can not drive it. i have slipped several times on angled dirt roads but not to the degree that i continue to have with snow covered hills....after reading the report i realized that this could be caused to the recall and issues that are taking place...i am not certain, but am giving this information should it help in any way....thanks! *jb

2003 jeep liberty limited. due for inspection may of 2009. failed to pass inspection due to front lower ball joints. next day, received notice in the mail regarding recall of front lower ball joints (the recall was issued in 2006, i found out later, but this was the first i was notified). called dealership (don white's of timonium) regarding recall, was told it would take a few days to receive parts, but still within the month of may, told that they would call in a few days with more exact dates. canceled appointment that i had previously made to have ball joints replaced, since recall would repair the parts free of charge. never received phone call, so placed call myself to dealership, told it would be several weeks to receive parts as they were on back-order. i then placed call to chrysler to investigate huge delay on recall parts (may 26th). i was told that they were on back-order, but chrysler would arrange for a rental (free of charge) while i waited for the parts to arrive. i was told they would call me in 3 to 4 days with the car rental information. never received phone call. called chrysler again on june 1st, was told to wait another day. called back the next day (today) and was informed that the dealership never ordered the parts and that chrysler needed to investigate further before i could be issued a rental, if i would get one at all. now the inspection has expired on the jeep and i am left with an unsafe vehicle. i still have to work and cannot afford a rental for what could amount to a month or more. *tr

While driving slowly out of my driveway, my upper ball joint disconnected causing the passenger side front tire to fall off. i did have my children with me however no one was injured. the apparent recall in 06 of the lower ball joints was unknown to me at the time. chrysler did replace the upper and lower ball joints. i was charged a $150. deductible which i feel is very unfair considering the investigation revolving around the upper ball joints and obvious concerns about the lower ball joints. my concern now is when will it happen again, it only had 50,000 miles at the time and can i assume it's safe to drive another 50,000. it's not worth putting my kids in danger. how can chrysler assure me that it is fixed! *tr

I own a 2003 jeep liberty that has been recalled for the lower ball joints. the recall was issued in september 2006. the recall states of the importance of replacing the ball joints. but the problem is that the dealers can't get the parts to fix the problem. i have been on a waiting list for several weeks now, and still am about the 40th person down the list to have this service performed. the recall states that a crash could occur without warning. i realize not all vehicles may be affected, but how do we know if our vehicle is safe? i could understand a few days or a couple of weeks to order a part, but the longer it takes, the safety of my vehicle puts my life in jeopardy, as well as others on the road. i don't understand why this is taking so long on such an important matter. it could take months for my dealer to fix my vehicle, and i am sure there is a long list after my name. it seems like the safety of myself, and other jeep consumers is not being taken seriously. so why do they send out recalls if they can't get the problem fixed? *nm

I was driving from canton, ny to corning, ny. at approximately 3:15 pm on feb 2nd i made a right hand turn and experienced a failure in the drivers side ball-joint. the suspension caught on the rim of the tire and i was barely able to get the car most of the way off the road. the car would not move after that. i had to call a tow-truck and he was able to drag the jeep onto a flat-bed and transport the jeep to a local dealer. the dealer was outstanding(peter koch in seneca falls, ny)! they had an emergency set of ball-joints and were able to fix my car that afternoon. the drivers side front rim was ruined and the dealer instructed me to have it replaced. the dealer used the spare rim during the repair. my concern is that 15 minutes earlier i had been driving on the ny state through way and can only imagine what would have happened had this joint failed at 65 mile per hour. i have been on the waiting list at my local dealer for at least three months and may be even 6 months for this recall repair! this is unacceptable! i checked with my local dealer this morning and i am number 31 on the recall list - the dealer said that they receive between zero and 3 sets per week. this is unacceptable. jeep should stop producing new vehicles until this potential life-threatening defect has been fixed in the jeeps that have already been produced. i have seen this defect described as a loosening of the ball-joint. i believe that to be an understatement. this part fails and the result of a failure can be catastrophic. *jb

I have a 2003 jeep liberty. i received a recall notice in december 2006 f23 - lower ball joints. i promptly called the dealership per the instructions. that was around december 20th 2006. i was put on a list for them to call me when the parts came in. i called again jan 19th 2007. i was told that they were not getting the parts very fast and that they were still waiting for parts they ordered in nov 2006. they told me that it will still be several months. my concern is that the recall says the defect can cause a loss of steering control. i don't mind waiting a few weeks - but a few months seems excessive. i drive my 3 kids around in this car!!! *nm

I have two issues. the first being that i received the recall notice for the lower ball joints on my 2003 jeep liberty. i contacted the dealer on nov. 16, 2006 and was asked for my name, number, and address. the man told me that the parts were not in stock and had to be ordered which may take 4-5 weeks. he said they would contact me as soon as the part came in. it has been two months and i have yet to be contacted. recalls are supposed to be done in a timely manner. is this shortage of parts really the problem or it my local dealer. my second issue is that of the floor shifter. the last two times i drove my jeep, it refused to go into park or 1st gear. i tried pressing harder on the button on the underside of the shifter, turning my vehicle off, and giving it force. the first time i ended up driving to my local mechanic who couldn't get it into park at first either, after giving it some force it went in, however he seemed to ignore the fact that it was a problem with the vehicle and told me to make sure i press the button in when trying to put it into park. it happened the following day when i was parking in front of my home. i struggled for 15 minutes, then drove around the block and tried again. i went into park although not smoothly. i will be contacting the dealer tomorrow. i was wondering if anyone else had this issue and would it be covered under any warranty. i have had nothing but negative experiences with dealers, therefore i am dreading having to take my jeep and pay for a defect. please if you have any information on these issues, let me know. thank you for your time. *nm

Daimler chrysler is not sending the dealership sufficient number of parts to repair the recalls. i've been waiting over a month and call practically everyday to see if a shipment of the lower ball joint parts have come in. meanwhile it's very unsettling to know that my steering can fail at any moment. perhaps daimler chrysler would rather hear from my surviving family and their attorneys should anything happen to me due to their failing to provide a replacement to an inexpensive part that could directly be the cause of an unfortunate accident. *jb

10/28/2006003/01/2003
I received a recall notice from daimler chrysler about my 2004 jeep liberty about a safety recall f23-lower ball joints. this recall states that ball joint separation can result in a loss of steering control and could cause a crash without prior warning. trying to make an appointment with the dealer to repair the problem revealed there would be an 8 week wait because the parts are not available. i learned from the dealer (and later verified by calling daimler chrysler at 1.800.853.1403) that daimler chrysler is making only 3 replacement parts available to dealers per week! if this is such a potentially dangerous situation, doesn't daimler chrysler have an obligation to make more parts available to dealers of their defective cars? i understand that we are talking about a lot of cars, but that does not change the fact that i am driving a defective vehicle which i will have to continue to drive for another 8 weeks. how can such a huge corporation not insure that parts are available to their dealers in a more timely fashion? what happens if indeed a crash occurs without prior warning during that waiting period? what will daimler chrysler say and do then? this is a shameful example of violating the public trust-and this car is not cheap-they are certainly not saying-hold your payments until the car is repaired. what can i do but wait?*jb

I called to schedule an appointment as i received a safety notice from chrysler. i was told it would be 3 months before i could get in and the dealership is only doing 2-3 per week. i have had an accident in the past with a broken ball joint so i am very sensitive when it comes to this. three months is too long to wait for a safety recall, especially one this serious. *jb

After a recall (daimler chrysler safety recall f23) of my jeep liberty for defective front ball joints, i called my dealer to schedule a repair for next week. my dealer told me that, because of the limited supply of repair parts from daimler chrysler (3 to 5 sets of ball joints a week to a large dealership), i would be put on a waiting list and might be called in for the repairs in the next 2 months or more. according to the recall notice, ball joint failure can result in a loss of steering control and could cause a crash without prior warning. daimler chrysler must provide the necessary repairs immediately. *jb

Received recall notice on jeep liberty on october 27,2006 and began calling dealerships for information and to schedule a repair. this was after calling daimler chrysler for names of dealer since ours had gone out of business. i called four dealerships within my driving area (35miles) not one of them offered to take my name, number or any other information. i was told about the parts being on back order and to call back in a week or 2. this is what i did and again was told the same i again called d/c and the customer rep told me again about the parts being back ordered and that each dealer only received 1-2 a week, there was nothing else she could do. well i have been calling every week since friday the 27th of october and finally on thursday november 30th a service person was willing to take my name and put it on a waiting list. but my question is for how long? my auto is my only transportation as like others, should i have an accident with my children in the car or any incident at all with then in the car, daimler chrysler will not have heard the last of me. i have already had to replace 2 front tires for reasons no one could explain (they had worn so bad on the inner tread) and have been keeping close eye on the new ones. can't afford tires b/f they are needed either. and will the dealer make sure my car is aligned and balanced? since this will be disrupted by the repair of the lower ball joints? i just want to be safe, i have loved my liberty since buying it and my son is looking forward to driving it in a couple of years. but do i allow him to? thank you in advance for you help and time. any and all assistance will be good. *jb

Recall delay: i received a recall notice f23 from daimler chrysler (dc). i contacted my dealer and was told there would be an unspecified delay in addressing this issue because parts were not being received in sufficient quantity by the dealer. i was 26 on the recall list on oct. 30. i contacted daimler chrysler customer service, they contacted the dealer and i was told repair would be made in about 3 weeks. i contacted the dealer today and was told only 8 parts kits had thus far been received. i again contacted dc and was told that my only recourse was to work with the dealer. as this recall is described as resulting in a loss of steering if a failure occurs, i am concerned for the safe operation while awaiting repair. i need for your agency to assist the corporation in solving their supply problem. i will expect a prompt reply. *jb

2003 jeep liberty, left lower ball joint separated causing wheel to nearly separate from vehicle. vehicle repaired by chrysler. since repair there has been loud noise when steering wheel is turned. brought back to repair facility to be inspected. informed that the lower control arm bushings cracked causing failure. this seems to be related to another material defect as the control arm sleeves are pressed as were the ball joints. i contacted chrysler and they stated there is no recall at this time. the vehicle is three years old and for two major material failures at the same time seems to be a serious problem. is there any others who have complained of this problem? *jb

I have a 2003 jeep liberty for which i heard re: recall some months back. i inquired at my dealership in aug ( greenbriar jeep) and was told i would get a notice. well, i did receive notice 11/12. when i called dealer today 11/13, i was told they did not have parts, and the parts were already 2 weeks behind. if this is a safety issue there should be enough repair kits for all vehicles involved. is there anyway of expediting this repair? i am very concerned with this kind of delay where safety in driving the vehicle is in question. respectfully submitted, m. sherman. *jb

I was contacted by daimler chrysler regarding a safety recall (f23) for lower ball joints on my 2003 jeep liberty. i followed the recall directions and contacted my local dealer (steve white motors) to schedule a repair. i was told that my repair would need to wait 10 weeks due to the rationing of repair parts to the dealers by daimler chrysler. i then contacted the help number for daimler chrysler provided by them on the recall notice. i was told that aside from having my vehicle inspected there was nothing they could do because there wasn't another dealership within a 20 mile radius from my home, nor could they provide the repair part any sooner. the recall notice indicates that the fault in the part can cause the ball joint to...separate. ball joint separation can result in a loss of steering control and could cause a crash without prior warning. and now i'm told to wait 2 and 1/2 months before this condition can be corrected. that's 2 and 1/2 months of jeopardizing my wife's and my safety. that is unacceptable to me and should be to both daimler chrysler and you. *jb

Ball joint failure three times. emergency brake on five speed never has worked properly. replace engine at 70,000. now the card end joint for the four-wheel drive is not working correctly. my biggest complaint is the ball joint failure for the third time. this issue also causes chain reactions in the tires i have had three sets of tires wear uneven and i wrote the company the first time to complain and got no response. i use my jeep to make my income and do not trust it any more. i do not recommend this vehicle to any one and will not pass it on to any family member. *nm

We had the recall(ball joints) done on our jeep liberty back in 03. then on 10/03/06 we had it back in the shop for stiffness in the steering; we were told the ball joints were fine, and that it could be the power steering pump and rack and pinion. on 10/31/06, the ball joints broke off while driving resulting in major mechanical damage to our jeep!!! if this is a recall on the first recall, why should we feel safe driving this vehicle after we get it back? how do we know its not going to happen again? please give us some input. *nm

I purchased my 2003 jeep liberty from central florida chrysler/jeep in january of 2004. i never received a recall letter and the dealer did not fix the ball joints before he sold the vehicle to me. if it is true that a recall took place in 2003 i would assume this matter would have been taken care of. however, on the night of july 1, at 1am i was making a right turn in the jeep liberty, and proceeding at about 25 mph when the front of the vehicle dropped and the steering went crazy. the liberty veered to the right and hit an electrical pole and continued into a fence. the jeep liberty was totaled, fortunately there were no serious injuries. at the time i had no idea what the hell had happened. now i know. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated that a recall letter was received in regards to the lower front ball joints. the dealer replaced the part with another defective part. the vehicle soon experienced the same problems when the ball joints failed causing damage to the axle while traveling 40 mph. the manufacturer was contacted and an investigator was sent to examine the vehicle. the investigator determined that the manufacturer would only cover the recall repairs for the ball joints but no damages that were caused by the defect.

As i made a right turn at 5 mph, i heard a loud bang and the driver side front wheel locked up. it was impossible to steer or drive the car. if i had been driving at highway speeds, i probably would have crashed. the lower ball joint had failed, digging into the wheel. the wheel actually separated from the car as we were removing the car from the tow truck. there was a recall for this problem 2 or 3 years ago, and i had the recall work done at that time. however, it still failed so the recall work was ineffective. the damage was repaired under warranty, but the dealer has been unable to assure me that the repair will prevent the problem from happening again. according to discussions at jeepsunlimited.com, others have had this same failure even after having the recall work done. *jb

After purchasing the 03 jeep liberty 4x4. i was made aware of the lower ball joint failure. i just had mine checked because i purchased this vehicle used. with 27,000 miles on it, it had already had new ball joints added to it. this make me nervous driving this vehicle. i heard they go out easily and you must check these lower ball joints often. this is just poor engineering, and for my family, just makes for an uneasy, sort of a hostile driving environment, due to constant nervousness. *jb

 1. really nothing lead up to failure, it was a catastrophic failure of my lower ball joints. thank god we were backing out of a parking spot when the incident happened and not at 70 mph. 2. basically my left front tire collapsed, causing me to call flatbed tow truck, front wheel fender damage and over $500 in repairs to just the lower ball joint. 3. chrysler will not do an investigation, because repairs were done. i was stranded in the middle of n.d. they said they would cover the ball joint replacement. i have the old ball joints, one exhibits catastrophic failure and the other has the tell-tale lubricant loss described in the report. note--i took the vehicle in for the recall and had work done. evidently the ball joints were not replaced, but the heat shield was installed. *jb

I have experienced the same problem with my 2003 jeep liberty as described in ea06008. the front right ball joint was repaired pursuant to the recall in 2004 (03v-460). shortly after the recall i observed unusual noises and grinding sensations in the front suspension, so i returned the vehicle to the authorized dealer that had conducted the recall repair. they determined that a heat shield had been installed incorrectly, and adjusted it. approximately 6 months later (august 2004) the noises returned more severely, and a different authorized jeep dealer determined that the front right ball joint had to be replaced, at significant cost to me. most recently, the right front ball joint completely failed just a couple weeks ago (june 2006). this time the right front wheel became completely detached from the steering control bar, resulting in over $3000 in repair costs. luckily, my pregnant wife was driving only 3 mph in a small alley when this occurred. had it occurred at higher speeds, there surely could have been far more tragic consequences. *jb

Lower ball joint failed while i was in williamsburg. broken ball joint also punctured the driver's side tire while resting up against it. had to have my jeep liberty towed to the dealership and then had to pay to be transported to the richmond airport to rent a car since everything was closed in williamsburg at 3:30 on a saturday afternoon. jeep was repaired the following week with a suggestion to fix the upper ball joint soon since it also had some 'play' in it. while having the upper ball joint replaced locally, mechanic had to replace the upper ball joint on the passenger side as well since it looked just as bad. he suggested replacing the lower ball joint on the passenger side as well within the next month to avoid an accident. both upper ball joints were left to me. the lower ball joint that had failed on the driver's side was retained by the chrysler dealership in williamsburg, virginia. *nm

*jb

Front end felt loose on the right side and when braking there was heavy clunking noise. found a recall notice online and called my dealer. i was told to bring it in and have it checked. the dealer replaced the lower ball joints on both side stating that the right side was ready to break at any moment. the dealer also installed a heat shield between the front rotors and the ball joints. this was at approximately 32,000 miles. steering felt tight again and the clunk noise was gone. then at approximately 43,000 miles, the noise returned and again the steering felt loose on the right side. this time i bought an after market replacement part that is sold as a problem solver to replace the defective ball joint. these were installed by a non-dealer shop at approximately 45,000 miles. noise and loose feeling in the steering has went away. *nm

I've been having my dealership check the lower ball joints when it gets serviced. at my 60k service they let me know my lbj's will need to be replaced. after talking with them and jeep through the 800 number, daimler-chrysler will not cover it under warranty. it was built six days after the cut off for the recall and it's past it's 36k miles and not included under warranty. seems like if older and newer kj's are still having the same part fail, they should be responsible and cover the repair. i believe they are not going to really correct this until someone gets killed and they are forced to for publicity and legal reasons. *nm

Driving in far left hand lane on nj tpke at 65 mph. suddenly felt car lurch forward to the right, hit the ground, tire blew out & began to fight to maintain control of vehicle. traffic was incredibly heavy, due to mother's day weekend. because of my training as a police officer for the past 28 years, i took my foot off the accelerator, held the wheel tightly and was able to keep control of the vehicle and skid for approx. 1/4 mile across 3 lanes to the roadside. the vehicle was spewing sparks, which caused others to slow behind us and avoid a collision. i still cannot believe the vehicle did not flip & kill both of us. according to the dealership where it was towed, i suffered total ball joint failure on the right front & near failure of the left ball joint. fyi, the tires were fairly new--michelin tires with 8,000 miles on them. the vehicle is still under review to see if repair is possible due to the extensive damage. *nm

2003 liberty sport- lower ball joints were replaced due to recall notice. i took the vehicle to a dealer at 24,000 miles with a complaint of ball joint wear. the dealer improperly inspected the ball joints for wear and said there is no wear and they are within spec. also, at the same time inspected the vehicle and passed it. approximately 5000 miles later, after several inspections of the ball joints by myself in the way they specified resulting in no play, the lower ball joint failed and separated. the vehicle crashed to the ground grinding the cv shaft into the ground. the vehicle was towed from the travel lane to the nearest garage. i am looking for input on what my next step should be. i have since called several dodge/jeep dealers and inquired about the procedure to inspect the ball joints and each do it incorrectly. one technician offer to look it up in the jeep liberty service manual and explained the proper way to me. sounds like gross negligence to me....*jb

Driving my 2003 jeep liberty freedom edition down a very steep gravel driveway. all of a sudden the entire car hit the bottom of the drive with a big crash. i was unable to steer and went part way into the road. had to move the car back to bottom of driveway as to not cause an accident in the middle of a mountain road. oil was leaking and when i tried to drive the car to the end of driveway, metal shavings were coming from the bottom of the vehicle. it was impossible to turn the wheel more than about 1 at a time. the entire fender on the passenger side popped off also. my back, neck and knee were hurt as result of the car crashing to the ground. had vehicle towed to jeep dealer, where i was told all parts would be replaced. the front ball joint had totally separated causing this very dangerous problem. when i had first bought the car used in april of 2005, i heard about the ball joint recall on the 2003 jeep liberty's. when i called daimler chrysler to ask about this, they told me the vin on my car was not in the recall. however, the problem i had with this car was the exact same one that the jeep liberty's were recalled for. obviously they have not fixed this problem. the manufacturer recall center was of no help with any answers and seemed totally unconcerned as i am still covered by the bumper to bumper(original) manufacturers warranty(only 26,000 miles on the car), and it wont cost you anything to have it fixed. and was told there is nothing we can do if it wasn't in the recalled vehicles.*jb

2003 jeep liberty ball joints replaced approx. 45,000 miles under manufacturer recall, at that time vehicle was making significant road noise from the front end suspension. dealer replaced lower ball joint assembly at that time. approx. 66,000 miles vehicle was taken to dealer to find source of front end noise again, dealer could not duplicate and stated there was no problem. approx. 71,000 miles vehicle taken back to dealer for same problem because it was getting worse. i had a factory authorized repair technician go on a test drive with me on september 23, 2005. within about a minute of the test drive the technician stated that it was most likely the lower ball joint assembly and that he believed the recall had been extended to lifetime. i scheduled an appointment to bring the vehicle in for repair on september 27, 2005. the dealership had the vehicle the majority of the day and could find nothing wrong. they stated that the ball joints looked fine. on sunday october 2nd, 2005 the lower ball joint on the driver's side failed. fortunately it was a speed of under 5 mph as we were turning out of a parking lot. the front driver's side suspension had collapsed. vehicle was towed to the dealership sunday evening. currently waiting on the dealerships response. this is a repeat failure and a major safety issue that to date the dealership has chosen to ignore. *jb

On monday, april 5, 2004, i brought my liberty renegade farrish jeep in fairfax, va for my 18,000 mile service which included a tire rotation and other work. no one ever mentioned to me that my vehicle was under a safety recall and that work had not been completed.*ak on saturday, april 10, 2004 i was driving my liberty when i heard a loud noise that sounded like a shot gun going off and my car skidded to the side of the road and came to a stop. my tire was flat but upon closer inspection, i discovered metal shavings all over the tire and down the street along my skid path. my car was towed to the nearest jeep dealer which was heritage chrysler jeep in alexandria, va. greg anderson, from heritage jeep, called me on monday, april 12, 2004 and informed me that my ball joints had separated while i was driving the vehicle and that was the cause of the breakdown. he said my vehicle is under a safety recall for this exact problem. i have grave concerns about the safety of this vehicle and the manner in which customers are notified about potentially life threatening defects in their vehicles. 1. i did not receive a recall notice in the mail indicating there was a potential serious defect with my vehicle that may cause me to lose control of the vehicle and crash. 2. it is my understanding that all vehicles coming into the farrish jeep service department have a function 14 performed which would indicate any outstanding recalls on a vehicle. my vehiicle did not have a function 14 performed on it and not being notified that this work needed to be performed when it was just in for service 5 days prior to my ball joints separating is completely unacceptable. this liberty is my family car that i take my 6 year old and 4 year old sons back and forth to school in every day on the i-495 beltway. i cant imagine what would have happened to me and my family, and other drivers around me, had my ball joints separated on the beltway at 60 miles an hour. *ak

I was driving down a 2 lane country road, within speed limit, road conditions excellent. i have a pristine driving record. i rounded a bend and was approaching the straightaway and although i steered to straighten the vehicle, my jeep continued to go to the right. i turned the wheel harder to correct the direction and the jeep veered to the left into the oncoming traffic lane. i managed to get the car back to the right side of the road, but the car hit the gully on the side of the road and crashed into a tree stump. although i applied the brakes the car felt like it skidded to the right and the antilock brakes didn't engage. when i crashed into the side of the road i broke the front wheel and damaged the rear wheel, broke the lower control arm, damaged the suspension and steering knuckle, and did some body damage. when i queried the dealer about how this could happen, they said they knew of no defects on the 2003 liberty. after finding the information on the internet about the lower control arm/ball joint recall, and calling the dealer again with this info, the dealer said, oh yeah, they knew about that, but don't pay much attention to recalls. i had the car serviced by my dealership on 12/16/03, the day after the recall notices were supposedly sent to customers (i still haven't received one as of 2/3/03), but they never mentioned the recall or scheduled the replacement of the defective part. i am available for contact if there are others out there who have experienced similar failures.*ak

I have a 2003 jeep liberty with 87,000 miles on it and the upper ball joint on the driver's side broke in half today while i was slowly making a turn into my office. the tow truck operator said this should not have happened. i was lucky that i was only going so slow hour when it broke because if i had been going faster, i would have wrecked the vehicle. my jeep has never been off-road since i have owned it. jeep does currently have a recall in place for the lower ball joints which they say get corroded and separate from the control arm. the upper ball joint did the same exact thing but does not appear to be included in the recall. i could have been killed or maybe even injured someone else had this happened on the highway. since the recall is only for the lower ball joint the dealership would not help with the cost. the damage was not just to the upper ball joint but to the rotor and the break line and the front axle. i called chrysler corporate services and basically they told me to pound salt. i also see that others have had similar experience. *tr

I have a 2003 jeep liberty with 95,000 miles on it and the upper ball joint on the passenger side broke in half today while i was pulling out of a filling station. the tow truck operator who also owns a garage stated that he had never seen one of these break like this one did. i was lucky that i was only going 2 miles an hour when it broke because if i had been going faster, i would have wrecked the vehicle. my jeep has never been off-road since i have owned it. jeep does currently have a recall in place for the lower ball joints which they say get corroded and separate from the control arm. the upper ball joint did the same exact thing but does not appear to be included in the recall. i could have been killed or maybe even injured someone else had this happened on the highway. *tr

On several occasions my car has stalled. prior to it stalling it would have power surges, backfire, the rpm needle would go crazy, and then just shut off loosing all power to brakes and steering. stalling would occur mostly at lower rates of speeds (under 50mph). it wouldn't turnover immediately. i would have to wait 20 to 25 seconds each time and then it would start, almost as if the system resets itself. it's pretty scary when you have to young children and your on a freeway and your car all of a sudden stalls. the second problem i'm having is a very loud noise coming from the rear end. i pointed my side mirror down towards my backtire. i watched as the rearend made a load cluncking noise and it was as if the back tire was being pushed outwards. the third problem is my passenger side rear window just dropped into the door. the motor still works i can hear it. and last but no least my left turn signal blinks extremely fast and then sometimes it doesn't. my car is currently at the jeep dealership. i think it's kind of funny that the guy wants to charge me $200 to investigate the problems i'm having to find out what it is. thanks to everyone's complaints i can call him and tell him the problems, as if he didn't already know. goodluck to everyone. *tr

On june 19, 2008 i was driving on a major highway when the vehicle started to make a loud noise from the rear and 10-15 minutes later i heard a loud thump and the car stopped, i had to roll to a stop an the side of the hwy...when i looked under the car the rear axle had fallen. the jeep has had a rear noise for sometime now. i took it in and was told that the rear axle needed oil it was completely dried up and the metal has been grinding which is why the noise was there. i asked why was there no oil and everyone looked surprised and did not have an answer. never heard of that, i was told that metal particles where in the oil pan and that the noise will continue but that there was no danger. months later i took the car back to have that same rear axle oil changed and was told that i do not need to do that again. now 6 months later the cars axle falls out. what is up with that. i have been driving for over 30 years and have owned varies vehicle which i have driven over 230,000 miles and never had the oil in the axles replace. why did this happen to my vehicle? what can i do? i am 4 months shy of paying off this vehicle. what a joke. *tr

Groaning/grinding noise in the back wheels at slow speeds, mostly when leaving a parking garage, stop lights, parking lots. brake pedals not depressed at the time. noise increases when temperature is low and humidity is high. noise started at 1,000 miles (less than a month after the date of purchase). taken to dealership who at first could not duplicate the problem. i recorded the noise several times and played to the dealership service manager. in for repairs for the same purpose over 10 times during the 1st year, without success. issue is now with chrysler engineering who appears not to be in any hurry to fix the problem. dealership does not follow-up and does not communicate on the status of this issue. also never received the recall notice. took the car in for the recall service after seing your notice, and was told it might take a couple of months for the recall notices to get out. it's been 6 months, and no recall notice as yet. other issues with this car are another rattling noise that they can't fix. a weather strip on the driver's window that had to be replaced 7 times (so far) because it keeps coming loose. excessive vibration when on the highway at speeds of 70 mph. wind noise coming from every direction, can't hardly hear the radio. radio quality is so bad i can't use it. have to play cds instead. and chrysler won't do a thing to remediate the problems. *la

On august 11, 2006 while driving home from work, my jeep liberty began to sway. i proceeded to slow when my rear axle including wheels fell off. no warning, the entire rear axle disassembled. the conditions that night were wet, however there was nothing more than that. i had my vehicle towed to an authorized chrysler mechanic. i inquired to what would cause the rear axle to just fall apart this way. i was informed it was because of the impact? there was no impact which was evident by the condition of my vehicle. my vehicle had to be repaired. the left rear control arm and driveshaft had to be repaired and reinstalled in addition to the rear end asm and left wheel and tire replaced. *jb
