For the last year or so we have had problems with the jeep swaying everytime we accelerate and decelerate. this was becoming a serious safety concern and took the jeep to my mechanic after researching on google and finding other jeep owners reporting the same issue. my mechanic reported that he had to replace the rear suspension lower control arm which fixed the problem. i had this work done in april 2012 and have since seen that a recall has been issued for this same problem (nhtsa action number ea11013) but the recall does not include jeeps manufactured in texas since it is explained that the cause is corrosion due to application of road salts during winter weather conditions. i believe this needs further investigation of the potential causes and needs to be expanded to texas and possibly other states as well. i personally would like chrysler to be held accountable and believe that i should be reimbursed for my expenses which were quite substantial. *tr

Passenger side rear control arm broke in half. caused vehicle to make a hard left turn crossing center line into oncoming traffic. fortunately there was no oncoming traffic at that moment so there was no crash. visual inspection revealed massive corrosion on both control arms. when this happens, you have no control of the vehicle. this recall needs to be expedited and owners need to be notified before someone gets injured or killed.

I was backing out of garage and heard a pop and then grinding noise. stopped immediately and found the left front upper ball joint had popped out of the control arm. the ball joint is rust pitted badly. i would assume the right front ball joint is in the same condition. i am also aware that the 2002-2003 liberty's have an open recall for this problem due to water intrusion. i had the recall for the lower ball joints replaced under warranty. i was lucky that there was not a seperation while driving at speed.

While driving 60 mph on the staten island expressway in ny i heard a thump and lost control of the vehicle. it was as if i was driving on ice. the rear end of the jeep swayed side to side until i was able to bring it to a stop. the drivers side rear lower control arm snapped causing the rear axle to move to the rear on the drivers side. this caused the drive shaft to pull out of the transmission and hit the ground. while moving forward the drive shaft was dragging on the pavement moving side to side as it was still turning because the rear wheels were turning. luckily i was able to bring the vehicle to a stop while just barely avoiding hitting a guard rail and other cars in the lane to the left of me. once stopped i was stuck on a two lane exit at 11:00 pm with cars doing 60 mph coming to a screeching halt behind me and with some cars swerving into the adjacent lane to avoid hitting my car. this car is driven most by my wife with only my daughter in the front passenger seat. on this evening we had two adults in the front and two adults in the rear seat. i believe it was the added weight in the rear seat that caused the arm to break at this time. these vehicles need to be recalled and repaired as the situation will only get worse as they go through more winters. it looks to me like they want to wait until someone is killed before they do a recall. i also believe that a lot of these part failures are going unreported. had the drive shaft hit a lip, pot hole or other obstruction before stopping, my vehicle could have flipped over causing serious injuries or death. the cost for the repair which had to include a new drive shaft was over $1100.00. if needed i have the failed part and the other control arm and drive shaft. i also have photos of the failed part.

I recently noticed abnormal tire wear (insides balding) on my front tires so i replaced the tires and took the vehicle for an alignment. before the repair shop would do the alignment on the vehicle the checked the components to be sure that the was no other problems. they found that the lower and upper ball joints were bad on both sides and stated that it was unsafe to drive. i imediately contacted my local jeep dealer to inquire about the repairs and to check for recalls. they advised me that there was a recall on the lower ball joints, i asked if the lower ball joints could cause the upper ball joints to go bad and they said that it could. i asked if that would be covered under the recall as well since they could have caused the upper ball joints to become bad, and i was told no that it would only cover the lower ball joints. so my complaint is that the recall should cover the upper ball joints as well because even after the repairs on the lower ball joints the vehicle is still unsafe to drive if the recalled part caused the problem to the upper portion as well.

While initially starting to move the vehicle, my wife noticed that the car was not acting correct. she got me, i looked under the car and noticed that the drivers side rear axle control arm was completely rusted through and the rear tire was moving back and forth in the wheel well. obviously the car was inoperable to use at this time. the jeep dealership (pinckney chrysler dodge jeep inc., pinckney, michigan) claimed they did not know of any issues with the rusted through control arm and the service manager did check for any outstanding recalls on the vehicle but i knew we were not the only ones that had this problem. i went to a local jumk yard (because were very tight on money) and bought a used, like new one and replaced the part myself. the junk yard said they sell a lot of them, obviously jeep has a problem and are trying to hide it with this component rusting through. i do have the failed part in my posession and will gladly e-mail pictures of it to anyone of interest.

The car did not feel right when i was driving home one evening and the whole back end jumped to the right when going over bumps or traffic passed my car. i got off the freeway and as i turned a corner the whole back end just slid and the vehicle was hard to keep control of. i had to drive 10 mph on city streets to get home and the car was difficult to control, it wanted to keep sliding to one side or the other. i found, on getting home, the rear lower control arm had rotted out and failed. it looked as though it had been in salt water for 25 years. if i had been at freeway speeds when it failed there is no doubt in my mind it would have caused an accident and very likely a fatal accident to me. i have seen 20 year old cars that do not have this kind of rot on critical parts like this and feel there is no way this should of happened on a 7 year old car. i have spoken to chrysler and they will not help me on the repair as it is out of warranty but the real concern is to the pre-mature failure of this critical part. i have kept the part they removed if anyone would care to inspect it. i hope this may help other owners inspect this part and prevent a serious accident. i hope someone from the nhtsa contacts me so i can further express my concerns.

My husband is a mechanic. he and his employer were trying to maneuver a 2004 jeep liberty into the work stall from the parking lot. the jeep had a broken ball joint (a condition that they later found was under recall notice) and would not steer, so my husband was guiding it with a floor jack while his boss was behind the wheel, braking when necessary to help control forward momentum. the vehicle was idling. this is standard procedure, one carried out many times by both men. both men have at least 25 years of experience each as auto mechanics. there is a lip just at the door of the shop to prevent water from coming in, and when the jeep came to this lip, the vehicle tipped slightly, and the right front tire touched the ground. instantly, the engine revved and the vehicle jumped forward at full power. the boss literally stood as hard as he could on the brake but to no effect. the vehicle left a long black skid line behind it where the back tires were trying to brake, but the front tires were continuing to accelerate. my husband was hit and dragged fifteen feet then crushed against an upright support. according to both mechanics, the front wheels should not have had power to them, since the vehicle was not in four-wheel drive and cannot put itself into four-wheel drive: a lever must be raised manually. my husband had to be life flighted to emmanuel hospital where he was diagnosed with a collapsed lung, broken nose, broken collarbone, nine broken ribs, and a broken ankle. he also suffered general crushing of most of his body. a broken left rib was diagnosed two weeks later. the jeep was taken to a local chrysler dealership for repair of the broken ball joint and the transmission pan, damaged in the accident. *tr

My 2004 jeep liberty, with 37,000 miles, failed when the front ball joint snapped, sending the undercarriage into the concrete. upon inspection, it was found the other ball joint was ready to snap as well. i understand this is a common liberty problem. i have been in contact with chrysler and my lawyer. had i been going faster than 10 mph, i could have been killed. i would hope chrysler will have some compassion for their customers and fix this problem before someone dies. they should also repair, at no charge, this defect immediately. *jb

Driving to my child's school when i heard a grinding noise, stopped the car and found the left front wheel collapsed and turned in. it was towed to by aaa to perkins in crestwwood ky. ( a jeep dealer) left ball joint separated causing the collapse was reported to me and supposedly fixed. a couple of days after picking up my car i heard a rattling noise from the front of the car and took it back to the dealer. they found nothing. on march 24 2006 i heard a popping noise while driving and decided to take the jeep in to the nearest dealer who was neil huffman in louisville .the mechanic reported that the right lower ball joint was loose and it needed to be tightened. i left the car with them so the could fix the problem. on march 30,2006 i was pulling out of a parking lot and turned my car when i heard a grinding noise then a pop. i got out of my car and found the right front wheel collapsed and towed it in to by aaa to neil huffman jeep dealer wear they found the right ball joint collapsed. i did not have to pay for this job since i just had it in . the 2001,2002,and 2003 jeep liberty's were recalled for faulty ball joints. the 2004's have not been yet. maybe this is a design problem! *jb

Complaint received via e-mail, i'm sure i'm not the only one with a jeep liberty that pulls to the right. my family has 2 2004 liberty. one brought february this year and came straight out of the showroom, pulling badly to the right. i had to take vehicle to the dealer 3 times, and finally was sent to an alignment place. bought another liberty in june, and it's pulling to the right. this is dangerous.*ak

This is a correction and addition to odi 10098071. i made a left turn at about 10 mph. after the turn the vehicle skidded, hit curb and flipped. a police officer witnessed the incident and said that it appeared that the anti-lock brakes did not react. the car is also equipped with enhanced accident response system which obviously did not react. *jb

Had been driving and hear squeaking/creaking when turning the vehicle. every once in awhile, i would feel the vehicle slip on a turn. one morning when i was driving to work; as i entered the parking lot, i heard a loud pop on the driver's side followed by a harsh grinding. i was able to pull into a parking spot, but it is clear that the vehicle is not driveable. i was going no more than 5mph when this occured.

I own a 2004 liberty and had the front lower ball joints replaced due to a recall. i started hearing an awful sound and took it to my jeep dealer to find out the front upper ball joints are bad. the left is severely separated and could go at any time. i don't have $400 to repair what i would consider a defect. this vehicle is barely 5 years old and i have had some pretty major problems with it. in the short time that i have owned it i owned a 1996 jeep cherokee for 8 years and never had more than an o2 sensor problem. i would appreciate a response at your earliest convenience. *tr

Safety recall notice on 2004 jeep liberty for lower ball joint replacement. i contacted a jeep dealership on 1-8-2007 and was told i would be put on a list for replacement. today 2-20-2007 i'm being told the same thing, we have you on the list. this concerns me because we are older people and ball joint failure could be fatal to us. i feel that six weeks is enough time for them to fix this problem. thanks for your attention. *nm

On august 16th, 2006 my wife and i were on our way home when her 2004 jeep liberty came to a abrupt stop while in traffic (about 20-25 mph to 0 mph in a flash of a second, thrusting us both forward). the road conditions were not good (heavy rain, low visibility), however, our trip was uneventful up to this point. the vehicle was towed to the nearest dealership thereafter. my complaint stems from the earlier conversation my wife had with a local chrysler-dodge-jeep dealership (baxter auto group). upon calling them on monday august 14th, 2006 to reserve an appointment she was asked to describe the problem. she noted that there seemed to be problems with the steering... and that the wheels seemed to grind when turning the vehicle. we had heard on from her father that certain jeeps were being recalled for steering and or front suspension problems. when she asked the service person whether or not she should be concerned he noted that, if the problem is not occurring all of the time then she should wait until the recall begins in september. the dealership was definitely not proactive in helping us with this problem. i could only imagine what would have happened to the two of us if this vehicle failure happened one to two minutes earlier on the freeway driving 60 mph (in heavy rain with moderate traffic). though the recall on the 2003-2006 model year jeep liberty does not start until september i would really like to see chrysler become more proactive. if someone has the same problems as we did... then the dealerships should waste no time at all and remind the driver that they are now driving at their own risk. or a better idea would be to no longer drive the vehicle. please feel free to contact me for any other information. *nm

Received a recall for jeep liberty for lower ball joint, on the recall it states this can cause the ball joint to corrode and separate. ball joint separation can result in a loss of steering control and could cause a crash without prior warning. i called the dealer and the parts are on 3-6 month back order. i would think something this dangerous would not be delayed this long. *jb

I have gotten numerous notices regarding the lower ball joints on my 2004 jeep liberty saying they can corrode or separate and result in loss of steering. i've been calling the dealer i use (mancari's of orland hills) since november 2006 to get this fixed and i keep getting told the parts are backordered, or they are only getting a couple in at a time and i am on a waiting list! this has been going on for 3 months!! if this can cause a crash why are the parts not being made available? *nm

I recently received notification of a safety recall for my 2004 jeep liberty with regard to the lower ball joints. the problem is that water may enter into the front suspension lower ball joints on my jeep. this can cause the ball joint to corrode and separate. ball joint separation can result in a loss of steering control and could cause a crash without prior warning. i contacted my dealership in order to get the part ordered and line up an appointment to have the repairs completed. the dealership was contacted on 01/24/07..the day after i first received notification of the safety issue. they informed me that they would order the part and call me to set up an appointment to as soon as the part came in. i had not heard from the dealership, so i called them on 02/13/07 to inquire about the ordered part. there was no record of a part being ordered. therefore, i placed the order again on that day and asked if someone could call me back to give me an idea of when i could be scheduled for an appointment and how long it would take for the part to come in. i have not been contacted since that last call. i was told by the phone attendant at the dealership that the manufacturer is only sending the service area 3 ball joints at a time--and that is why its taking so long for me to be serviced. i asked the attendant how serious was this recall and if i was in any danger. she asked me if my car was operating properly and i told her yes to my knowledge it was, and she told me that i was probably ok. i would really like to know why it is taking so long to have my car serviced and should the dealerships be taking such a cavalier approach to this recall? *jb

My vehicle, a 2004 jeep liberty, has been safety recalled (f23) for lower ball joint replacement. although i had heard of the recall in fall of 2006 my dealer would not take action until i received formal notification of the recall which i received in early january 2007. shortly after receiving the recall notice i contacted my dealer to make an appointment. dealer informed me that parts were on order and not expected for at least a month. my name was added to a wait list. i contacted the dealer today and was informed that parts would not be available until may 2007. i feel this is an unreasonable time to correct what daimlerchrysler characterizes as a condition that can result in a loss of steering control and can cause a crash without prior warning. and i'm supposed to keep driving it? *nm updated*jb

We have been waiting almost 2 months for repairs on our 2004 jeep liberty renegade for safety recall f23 - lower ball joints. since water may enter into the front suspension causing ball joint separation, we are at risk of losing steering control which could result in a crash without prior warning (as described in notification code f23 from daimler chrysler). we have been on the waiting list at 2 separate dealerships since mid-december and both have told us that the parts are not being sent fast enough from daimler chrysler, prolonging our exposure to an unsafe situation. i do not feel comfortable driving my family around knowing that this publicized problem is not being remedied within a reasonable amount of time. *jb

My 2004 jeep liberty has a recall for the (f23) lower ball joints. i took my vehicle into a jeep dealership on 18 january to have the problem corrected. i was told that the parts were on backorder through chrysler and that it would be at least 6 weeks until they arrived. on 2 february, approximately 8:00 am, i was leaving my home for the airport. i was still in my driveway thankfully when the accident occurred. my vehicle had a sudden jolt and the right side of the jeep fell, burying my right front tire. the lower ball joints had separated with no warning. it caused additional damage to the tire and undercarriage. i would hate to think what would have happened if i were on the road or highway. this recall is so severe! this will cause deaths if someone doesn't do something about it. how can they not have enough parts for such a severe recall??? my jeep was towed to the a dealership. they did manage to fix it along with the additional damage that this recall caused. *jb

Chrysler sends out recall information to customers owning 2002-2006 jeep liberty's. safety recall f23-lower ball joints. this letter is enough to scare the hell out of anyone especially driving around with my child. telling me my vehicle could loose steering and cause a crash without prior warning and yet they are only sending out 2-3 parts a week to the dealers. i called as soon as i got the letter a week ago. there is still 43 people a head of me, so therefore this is going to be weeks like 14 weeks before my car can be fixed. to send a letter out to people explaining the danger of this and to contact your dealer right away. they are concerned for our safety. this makes me feel very upset and scared to drive myself around town and even more so having my child in the car with me. i am outraged that they would scare people like this and make you wait months to get the problem fixed. i feel like taking my vehicle and trading it in on another make. i can not believe they are making customers ride around in fear. *nm

I own a 2004 jeep liberty. i read an article in our local paper in august 2006 concerning recalls. finally received the notification late november - safety recall #f23 from daimler chrysler - lower ball joints. called my dealership immediately. was told i was on a waiting list of 30 ahead of me and that the dealership was only receiving parts to fix 2 vehicles per week. this is ridiculous because i was told i could lose a wheel if those lower ball joints give out. which could result is loss of control of vehicle, accident, injury or death. called dealership on 1/9/07 - there is still 20 vehicles ahead of me. called an 800 number to daimler chrysler on 1/10/07 to complain and my call could not be connected to a customer representative. this is when i decided to file a complaint with you. this vehicle is a family used vehicle. i have a teenage daughter driving and i am scared to let her use this vehicle. i understand it is not my dealerships fault - they state daimler chrysler is slow at sending out the parts. this is unacceptable to me. *jb

I received a recall notice from daimler chrysler about my 2004 jeep liberty about a safety recall f23-lower ball joints. this recall states that ball joint separation can result in a loss of steering control and could cause a crash without prior warning. trying to make an appointment with the dealer to repair the problem revealed there would be an 8 week wait because the parts are not available. i learned from the dealer (and later verified by calling daimler chrysler at 1.800.853.1403) that daimler chrysler is making only 3 replacement parts available to dealers per week! if this is such a potentially dangerous situation, doesn't daimler chrysler have an obligation to make more parts available to dealers of their defective cars? i understand that we are talking about a lot of cars, but that does not change the fact that i am driving a defective vehicle which i will have to continue to drive for another 8 weeks. how can such a huge corporation not insure that parts are available to their dealers in a more timely fashion? what happens if indeed a crash occurs without prior warning during that waiting period? what will daimler chrysler say and do then? this is a shameful example of violating the public trust-and this car is not cheap-they are certainly not saying-hold your payments until the car is repaired. what can i do but wait?*jb

I have a 2004 jeep liberty. it is still covered under warranty. first i had trouble with the transmission. it is not shifting properly. i took it to two dealers who told me that there was nothing wrong with it. i then found out from my local mechanic that my ball joints were bad. he took me right under the car and showed them to me...they are loose. i took it to one dealer for this, and once again i was told that there was nothing wrong with it. i was told that it met their factory specs. i now suspect that this is why my transmission was deemed o.k...it met their factory specs. why bother having a warranty if your not going to take care of problems with the vehicle??? i now find out that my vehicle is included in a recall for....surprise, surprise....bad ball joints!!! only problem is, i have to wait (and drive around with bad ball joints) until they get around to sending me the notice. totally unsafe and not good for my tires. this could of been taken care of 3 months ago when i originally took it in. *nm

I brought my 2004 jeep liberty into milford jeep for safety recall f23. the recall was to replace the lower ball joints. when i asked if a wheel alignment was going to be done, they said it would not be done. in checking with daimlerchrysler, i found out that they do not approve a wheel alignment and, if one is done, it would be at the owner's expense. i know the alignment was good prior to the ball joint replacement as my tire wear was even. but,now i will have to have a wheel alignment done as there is indications in my steering that suggest it needs an alignment. i can not believe that a ball joint replacement shouldn't include a wheel alignment. even if i was experiencing the problem that the safety recall addressed, it would be because of the defective ball joint assemblies that were in the jeep liberty. *nm

My 2004 jeep liberty was recently checked for severe steering noise at brown's jeep dealership in medford ny and i was advised there was nothing wrong with it. well on 8/5/06 the front passenger side lower ball collapsed while operating the vehicle with my family inside causing the front end to slam down and i lost full steering control. according to the nhtsa site as well as jeep owner internet sites, daimler/chrysler should have know about this potentially catastrophic defect and yet did nothing until a recall that is supposedly being issued in sept 06'. one minute prior and it would've occurred at highway speed as i had just gotten off the palisades pkwy in ny with potentially tragic results to my family. please do not operate your 2002-2006 jeep liberty until you have had this situation corrected immediately! *nm

My husband had been saying that the steering was really tight and when you turned you actually had to turn the wheel to straighten the car back out normally the wheel will come back on its on in all other vehicles that we have had. i was exiting a shopping mall parking lot when all of the sudden it sounded and felt like the bottom had fallen out of my jeep. so i stopped there in the middle of the road. my mother who was with me suggested that she thought i had a flat tire. i got out of the vehicle and did not have a flat tire instead my lower left ball joint had fallen out and was sitting in the inside wheel well on the drivers side. it was towed to the jeep dealership where it was purchased and repaired the following monday. of course it was not covered under the extended warranty that came with my car so i had to pay out of pocket. *nm

Hi, i was driving on i405 north next to right most lane on 28th april in a 2004 jeep liberty sport and lost control because of the steering problem, when i tried to gain control the steering wheel became jammed and i wasn't able to gain control and hit the concrete divider after crossing all the lanes . i came to know the ball joint defect after reading the recall news of jeep liberty vehicles. i put forward 3 theories behind the accident to the insurance company. i clearly mentioned them the steering wheel was jammed so i didn't able to steer. the police cruiser pushed my vehicle to the break down lane. the vehicle was a total loss. the vehicle is with the century 21 insurance company. the 3 theories i put i) steering failure. ii) tire burst iii) hit and run by some other vehicle. the insurance company is still investigating the accident. i got a report from them where they mentioned nothing wrong with the tires. the third option police report tells nothing. i told the insurance company to look in to steering failure as the vehicle still with them. i have not heard the investigation result from them yet. when i read the news article today, which confirms my first theory. my jeep was a 2004 model and has 26,470 miles at the time of accident. i can provide the jeep company any information they need. *jb

Vehicle was diagnosed after only 50k miles that ball joints and sway bar was bad. vehicle was in reverse, going less than 5 mph when the vehicle suddenly dropped on the front passenger side with a loud thud and a grinding. upon observation, the ball joint had come loose from the wheel, dropping the axle to the ground. this caused the wheel to push up on the fender, bending it out of place. ball joint and lower control arms was replaced. *jb

On sunday morning, i noticed that the car was pulling oddly to the left. while driving home from dinner in the evening, i stopped at a store and when leaving heard a loud thump and scraping noise. the right passenger side tire was rubbing up against the steering well. a tow truck was called to tow the vehicle to the local jeep dealer and in the process he mentioned that this was a ball joint issue. in speaking with the dealership today, they have determined that this was a failure of the right ball joint which caused separation from the steering column. this vehicle has only 41,000 miles on it. the vehicle has not yet been fixed but it has been recommended that both the right and left ball joints be replaced in the car. this vehicle is 5,000 miles from factory warranty and therefore i'm told that this will not be covered by the manufacturer. it was also mentioned to me that a recall was conducted for the 2002 and 2003 models of this same vehicle but nothing for 2004. chrysler is still investigating the situation with the dealer but they have already told me that this was not an issue that i could have prevented and was not caused by normal wear and tear. we were 5 minutes from getting on the highway where, if this failure had occurred at that high rate of speed, would have caused a rather major incident. chrysler, at best, has told me that they will investigate with the dealer further but that they are not fully liable because this vehicle is outside of the manufacturer's warranty. *nm

Dropped kids at the movies after traveling on the saw mill parkway at 50 mph. went to a shopping plaza and parked. returned an hour and a half later and when i tried to put my jeep liberty in reverse and move out from the spot my front drivers side wheel fell forward while making a very loud grinding sound at the same time. i had the vehicle towed to the nearest dealership and the tow truck operator said he sees a lot of this with the 2003 and 2004 jeep liberty's. since i am under warranty they are fixing the problem. i investigated this online and there has been recalls on the 2002 and 2003 jeep liberty's but nothing on the 2004's. i found a site online where people have had the very same problem. just by typing in the search box problems with 2004 jeep liberty's. my concern is that there may be people driving this model and may have a wheel come off. i was lucky since mine occurred after i parked. the dealer called me today and said my jeep is ready to be picked up and that the ball joint and the axle was replaced and that i shouldn't worry because they replaced it with an updated ball joint -- the best that they have and the same type that was used on the recalls for the 2002's and 2003's. so i guess they will replace if the warranty is still valid and if not, people will have to pay out of pocket. i want to know why they are not putting into place a recall for the owners of 2004 vehicles? someone may be seriously injured or even killed due to lack of knowledge of this faulty ball joint problem. as a result of the ball joint breaking - the axle broke and the brake line was punctured. *jb

I own a 2004 jeep liberty sport. i love it! i bought it from a jeep dealership & get all the service work done at the dealership as well. there have been no troubles with my jeep until recently. while i was backing out of a parking space i heard a noise and the front passenger side seemed to drop. i parked the jeep into my parking space with a terrible grinding noise as to not get hit since i was blocking the drive. i called for road side assistance to have it towed as it was not drivable. the front passenger side was sitting much lower than the driver side. when the tow truck arrived, the driver couldn't believe what he saw. the lower front ball joint had completely separated from the control arm and the tire was on the line of completely falling off. he was not equipped to remove it from the parking space without causing more damage to it at that time, so i had to have a different tow truck dispatched that would be able to raise it on a dolly and remove it from the parking space to tow it. the next day i spoke to my dealership & they said the 2002 & 2003 models had been recalled for this exact same problem. thank goodness that this happen while i was just backing out of a parking space! i drive 35 miles one way to work on the highway at 55-65 miles per hour every single day. this would have been deadly if the ball joint had broken while i was driving on the highway! my factory warranty had expired since my jeep has over the standard 36,000 miles so i had to pay for the expensive repairs on my own. the dealership suggested that i contact chrysler customer service to pursue reimbursement of this repair bill that totaled over $2,000 for the new lower ball joints on both front tires, replacement of the axel and a new wheel as it was damaged when the ball joint broke. i have called chrysler customer service and they have not said they won't reimburse me for the repairs, but contacting the dealership for more details before they decide. *jb

I noticed that the steering was becoming a little vague on the vehicle so i checked the lower ball joints for wear as i had heard that there were problems with them. i found that they were very loose with almost a half inch of play in them. i took the vehicle to the dealer since it was still under warranty. the dealership tech said that nothing was wrong with the ball joints. i then showed him that there was play and looseness. it turned out that he was not checking them by the service manual procedures. the vehicle has been at the dealer for over a week and a half and assuming that they still have the bad parts i will be sending them to d.c. to be examined. *jb

While exiting a parking lot at about 10 mph the 2004 jeep liberty i was driving made a loud banging noise and then a grinding noise. i stopped the vehicle and got out to inspect the problem. i found that the lower ball joint had separated and was shocked to see that on a vehicle with 40,000 miles. i had the vehicle in the shop at 35,000 miles complaining of a creaking noise while turning and a clunking noise over bumps and they said they could not duplicate the problem and did not see anything wrong. i would highly suggest that this be a recall or at least a technical service bulletin for the mechanics. if nothing is done to worn the owners of these vehicles more people will be killed!!!!! i know the 2002 and 03 models were recalled and reading all these problems with the 04's it is painfully obvious that the problem was not corrected by the engineering dept. at dm. i just had the vehicle towed to my local dealer and if this problem (and the torn cv boot, trans seal and rim) are not repaired under warranty i feel there is a lawsuit in order. i think it should be an auto manufactures primary goal to keep there customers safety priority #1. *nm

In the weeks leading up to the lower ball joint failure, we noticed problematic steering (turning harder) and weird noises coming from the front end. (specifically creaking noises while turning the wheel at low speeds) on 6/17/06 we noticed the liberty pulling hard to the right. later there was a loud clunk and steering was lost. got vehicle over to the side of the road and got out to inspect, didn't see anything. got back in and turned the wheel to the left and right and the driver's side front wheel fell off of the liberty. this was due to a lower ball joint failure. luckily, no damage was done to the fender. extended warranty (liberty had 44,100 miles at the time of incident) covered ball joint repair. *nm

I was entering the interstate from an entrance ramp. at the top of the ramp, i heard a loud pop & steering became difficult. i pulled out of traffic next to a concrete wall and stopped to check if i had a tire blow-out. upon seeing the tires were okay, my husband got into the vehicle, put it into gear and began to drive it. within 3 feet, the ball joint assembly apparently gave way & the left front of the vehicle fell, resting on the top of the tire. we were stranded for about an hour at the entrance ramp/interstate connection in a severe thunderstorm, praying for our lives. i am diabetic, and the stress caused my blood sugar to rise and i went into tachycardia. fortunately, i had medication with me and did not have to go to a hospital. aaa sent a flatbed wrecker to take the vehicle to a nearby dealer who, after jeep refused to replace the parts at their expense, repaired the jeep using our previously purchased extended warranty. i do not know if the old parts are available. *jb

I had about 35,000 miles on my 2004 jeep liberty when i heard about a lower ball joint issue affecting newer liberties. i had my lower ball joints inspected and found that they each had about half an inch of play. after taking the car over to the jeep dealership they replaced the units under warranty. however, they stated that they replaced the units with the same model as what was on the jeep before. so i guess in another 35,000 miles i'll be looking at replacing these again. *jb

With no warning whatsoever, the left front lower ball joint on my vehicle broke while i was backing out of a parking space. the vehicle did not make any unusual noises nor were there any noticeable problems prior to the part breaking. when the ball joint broke, the wheel was also damaged. when i had the vehicle towed into a jeep dealer, i was informed that there was a recall on 2003 jeep liberty's for this problem, but no recall had been issued on the 2004 model. the mechanics at the dealership told me that this part should be expected to last much more than the 1 year, 9 months & 40,000 miles of my vehicle life. my extended warranty covered the cost of replacing both front ball joints (except for a $100 deductible) and i had to pay to replace the damaged wheel. ($317.55). we were away from home and had stopped for something to eat at the time this happened. just think of the possibilities if we were enroute or returning via the expressways at speeds between 55 and 70 mph. i have contacted daimler/chrysler customer care and they seem unwilling to discuss this possible defect on this vehicle. *jb

Purchased 2004 jeep liberty in march 2005 (liberty has a build date of 01-04) and after alignment it has progressively gotten harder to control on the highway, changed tires, checked alignment. found out that the ball joints are worn and one is worn almost to separation. fortunately i found this before it separated. i have been told by jeep that they have never seen this problem, the jeep now has 49000 miles and of course is out of factory warranty and they act as though it has high mileage causing this problem. upon investigation i found that i'm not the only 2004 liberty with this problem, appears that the 02-04 all have the same problem. *nm

This is an update to an earlier complaint that i filed, as there appears to be no mechanism to update a complaint. there have been many complaints prior to this one on suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint. this complaint is also for the same problem. i leased a jeep liberty 2004 with 37800 miles on it. while driving to a destination, i lost my way and had to turn into a car park. while in the car park, i suddenly noticed the passenger side of the car dip down with a loud noise. as i parked the car, the car fell further down, so i parked and got out of the car. looking at the car it appeared to be leaning to the passenger side. next day while the car was being put on the tow truck, i noticed that both the wheels were falling apart and the middle part of the axle (or whatever holds the two front wheels together) was broken and dragging on the ground. the car had no problem up until this point and it is only 18 months old. thankfully this whole episode happened while i was in the car park. had it happened on a highway, it would most likely have been fatal. the car was taken to a jeep dealer (a week ago). it will be returned tomorrow with me having to pay the full cost of repair. i will argue this with the jeep dealer tomorrow, as jeep should take responsibility for the car falling apart and should not only absorb the cost of the repair, but also investigate what went wrong as this kind of failure is bound to be fatal. if the jeep dealer is not accommodating, we will pursue this through the nhtsa as well as the better business bureau. worst case we will have to higher a lawyer. *nm

After reading many complaints about lower ball joint failure on the 02-03 liberty, i got concerned and check the lower ball joints on our liberty. we have an 2004 jeep liberty with approx. 32,000 miles. upon checking we discovered that driver side lower ball joint had approx 1/4 inch play in it. the passenger side had maybe a 1/16 inch play. called the dealer and was instructed that it would not be covered under warranty as they blamed the lift on the failure. this is not caused by the lift it is a pre existing problem. chrysler fix to this was to install a heat shield behind the rotor and in front of the ball joint. however, that is not the fix, it is a design flaw. the ball joint is actually installed upside down causing stress every time you hit a bump. i will be having it fixed by a non dealer shop. we will save all our receipts in case a recall is started for the 04-05. *nm

On the morning of october 2, 2005, my son was driving our 2004 jeep liberty. approximately 1 mile from our home, the passenger's side lower control arm ball joint separated from the steering knuckle and caused my son to lose control of the vehicle. this resulted in the front right tire pushing outward and dislodging the right front axle. while my son was not injured, there certainly was the potential for catastrophic events to occur. there is information available that states that 2002-2003 models were recalled for this very issue. i am wondering if this problem was not corrected on the 2004 models. *jb

*jb

2004 jeep liberty sport 2wd - front right ball joint broken 1) regular driving with nothing out of the ordinary other than creaking from the front axle. only 38,000 miles on the vehicle. we took a turn in a residential area at about 10 mph when a loud pop sound occurred and the vehicle skidded to a halt as the front right tire was lodged by the failing components. 2) right front ball joint failure. car was rendered inoperable and had to be towed. if this had happened when we had been on the highway, it would have caused a (potentially fatal) crash. the car skidded to a halt at 10 mph, and it was luck alone that had us on a residential street rather than a highway at the time we were driving. 3) we had the vehicle towed to the dealer service location (klaben chrysler, kent, oh) and are awaiting service. this issue seems very frequent after having researched on the internet! chrysler/jeep needs to be held accountable! *jb

I own a 2004 jeep liberty. on may 6th while driving at 15 mph the front passenger wheel fell off and car was towed to dealer. the ball joint had broken and dealer wished to replace both ball joints. since the car was no longer under warranty i would have to pay. after researching this problem, i found that there have many many complaints and occurrences of this happening to other jeep liberty owners. the 2002 and 2003 jeep liberties have been recalled for the exact same problem. chrysler said they would not pay for the repair as the car was not under warranty. my argument is that this is a safety issue and the ball joints are defective and it is dangerous to drive this car and the car will eventually be recalled. i am very unhappy with their response. if i had been traveling at a high speed and this happened there would have been a serious accident. *nm

While traveling on a curvy state route, i noticed that my jeep wasnt handling the turns quite as well as normal. once i arrived in town, i made a stop at traffic light and when i began to move again, i noticed a very loud grinding sound near my passenger side rear tire and felt my vehicle begin to fishtail as i accelerated more. fortunately, i was able to safely come to a stop in a restaurant parking lot and inspect the vehicle. at that time i noticed a rusted piece of metal that had seperated itself from the frame and sway bar. i also inspected the other side, and observed obvious and excessive corrossion on the opposite side as well. had the complete seperation of this part happened while i was driving on the curvy roads or on an interstate at highway speeds, it without a doubt would have caused severe vehicle damage and had major potential for driver and passenger injury or even loss of life. fortunately, the worst case scenario didnt happen, but, i am still left without transportation, as this was my only vehicle. this vehicle had to be towed on a flat bed tow truck and is still awaiting repair.

Near collision due to torque problem, vehicle moves slightly left with acceleration and moves substantially right with deceleration. if you release gas pedal in a curve vehicle moves right about 1.5 feet. dealer test drove found vehicle shifting to left and right based on acceleration and inspected vehicle initially could not find fault. only through lost jeep forums with other owners of jeep liberty complaints of same problems found and the fix was that all of the rear bushings are worn on the lower control arms and possible the upper tri-link arm/bushing need replacement with the rear upper ball joint if movement present. real problem is that due to the lower control arms bushings worn out that the rear differential is shifting slightly causing the vehicle torque problem. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 jeep liberty. while driving between 15-30 mph, the pivot bushings on the suspension control arms began making knocking sounds. the sound would occur when the steering wheel was turned left or right, during acceleration in a straight line, depressing the brake pedal, and when driving over a bump in the road. a mechanic stated that the pivot bushing located on the front and rear control arms failed. the failure began when the vehicle was first purchased and has become progressively worse. the contact scheduled a repair appointment. the powertrain was unknown. the current mileage was 40,435 and failure mileage was 39,122.
