Overheating of the electrical connector at the fuel heater on the fuel filter / water separator assembly can cause a fuel leak through the electrical connection.operators report the smell of diesel fuel, smoke, difficulty starting and/or poor engine operation.the fuel leakage is reported by some operators as seepage, wetness, several drops, and an oz per minute.evidence of overheating of the connection was observed by some operators and reported as burned or discolored electrical connection at the fuel heater.seven operators report smelling or seeing smoke.one reported a vehicle engine compartment fire however the cause of the fire was not identified, and linkage of the fire cause to this issue is not likely to be established.the location of the fuel filter / water separator assembly is not near the location of the turbo charger which is located on the opposite side of the engine.the turbo charger would present a potentially hot surface however due to the layout of the engine compartment and its components, diesel fuel leakage from the electrical connection would not likely migrate to the turbo charger.at this time, a safety-related defect trend has not been identified and this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety defect does not exist.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

Nhtsa has conducted extensive analysis of the data regarding fuel tank integrity for the model year (my) 1993-2004 jeep grand cherokee (jgc). as a result of that work, the agency has decided to upgrade its safety defect investigation to an engineering analysis and to expand the scope of vehicles included in the investigation. nhtsa's assessment of the data collected during preliminary evaluation (pe) 10-031 indicates that rear-impact-related tank failures and vehicle fires are more prevalent in the jgc than in the non-jeep peer vehicles. in addition, the agency's analysis of its fars data for the peer vehicles and three jeep models shows a higher incidence of rear-impact, fatal fire crashes for the jeep products.pe10-031 had focused on the fuel tank system integrity of the jgc vehicles during rear-end collisions and impacts.the fuel tank is located at the rear of the vehicle, between the bumper and axle, and is manufactured from a plastic material (hdpe).three peer vehicles (across the same my range as the jgc) were identified for comparative assessment: the chevrolet blazer, ford explorer, and toyota 4runner.odi has collected and assessed a significant volume of data for the jgc and three peer vehicles under the defect petition (dp) 09-005 and pe10-031, much of which was either provided by the petitioner or by the subject and peer manufacturers in response to odi's information request letters.nhtsa has also utilized its fars database.fatal crash data was collected for the jgc and its three peers, along with data for two other jeep vehicles, the cherokee and liberty, which were also manufactured with rear mounted fuel tanks and assessed by odi as jeep peer vehicles.based on the agency's current analysis, odi has upgraded its investigation to determine whether the subject vehicles contain a defect that presents an unreasonable risk to safety.the subject vehicles for the investigation will be my 1993-2004 jgc, my 1993-2001 cherokee, and my 2002-2007 liberty.the estimated production volumes for these vehicles are shown above, although attrition is a factor for the older vehicles.please note that the counts shown in the above failure report summary are for the jgc only (values shown in the total column are unique).data for the other jeep models and possibly other peer models will be collected during the investigation.the odi reports cited above can be reviewed online at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints under the following identification (odi) numbers: jgc:506249, 549376, 734783, 869217, 10009553, 10335943, 10351589, 10351980, 10357528.liberty:10357195, 10366653 (duplicate of 10357195), 10138726, 10149256, 10181332cherokee:10409104

I have a 2005 jeep liberty crd diesel. i bought it used about six months ago at 56,000 mi. from a private owner. it now has 86,000 mi. i began having problems starting a week ago. the car starts and runs for 30 seconds and stalls. then you cannot restart it. the starter spins the engine but it wont start. if you open the hood and pump the hand pump on the side of the fuel filter, which is mounted on the left fire wall, the car will eventually start and run. yesterday, as i was pumping the fuel filter hand pump i noticed a drop of fuel come from the connector for the fuel heater on the spin on filter head. when i tried to start it, it started right up as it had before when i pumped the hand pump. as i walked around to shut the hood i could see the fuel dribbling out between the wires of the fuel heater plug on the head of the spin on filter. halfway home i noticed a strong smell of diesel fuel, opened the hood and saw that the leak was getting worse because the plug was soaked in fuel and running thru the heater plug down the firewall. the dealer (tyson motors of joliet il) denies that there is any problem and said i will have to pay for the repair. i have gone to web sites and there are scores of people with the same dangerous condition with their vehicle. many have caught on fire. so far i am told there is no recall. i guess there are not enough people dead yet. *tr

2005 jeep liberty shorted out fuel heater caused a fire on the fuel and water separator which melted onto the wiring harness below causing the jeep to stall immediately and filling the driver compartment with smoke. could of caused a severe accident. replacement parts are hard to find due to this seems to be a real problem with this vehicle. *tr

Slow start was noted prior to incident (most likely due to air in the system). jeep liberty crd went into limp mode on highway causing vehicle to slow below 40 mph. fuel/water separator was leaking fuel from pre-heater plug, which shorted out heater plug. heater plug was scorched on the inside, no fire noted. parts on order (approx cost $120 for part) intend to replace fuel/water separator assembly and heater plug wiring when it arrives. old part will be available. *tr

I, like many others, have a 2005 jeep liberty crd diesel. my fuel filter head is leaking fuel from the heater connector which could easily result in a fire. my connector is soaked in diesel fuel. chrysler needs to be aware of this amd offer some course of action before someone gets hurt or killed.

Car would start and die off after 1-2 minutes ( as in lack of fuel). there had also been electronic throttle control warning light flashing occasionally. to re-start, the fuel primer (located on filter head) had to be pumped. i read on www.lostkjs.com forum in the crd section that air might leak into the filter head, causing these symptoms. i noticed that the fuel heater plug located in the filter head was moist. i pulled the plug and heard a air-sucking sound. the plug contained a male part of what is obviously a burned-out fuel heater, which has made a hole into the filter head. a picture can be seen at the following link: http://www.pandkindustries.com/images/fuelheaterbusted.jpg i will be contacting the dealer and having the filter head replaced. the design is obviously faulty; any air collecting in the filter head leaves this heating element outside of the fuel allowing it to over-heat. over-heating the fuel heating element can further warp/damage the already leaky filter head. filter elements obviously will burn out over time. apparently, these fuel heater elements are constantly activated. air in the system can cause stalls at dangerous time (when accelerating and highway speeds. worse, burning-out heater elements and fuel leaks could lead to fire! *tr

Diesel fuel leaked out from around the electrical pins of the fuel heater. the failure was noticed as wetness around the connector during a routine changing of the fuel filter. disconnecting the heater connector from the fuel filter head allowed several drops of fuel to escape. the fuel filter head was replaced by the dealer under the vehicle warranty and is not available. *tr

2005 jeep liberty crd diesel engine started running sporadically. smell of burning plastic and diesel was present inside vehicle. pulled over and opened hood, to find boiling diesel steam coming from heater electrical port on fuel head. plug was discolored with heat. drove home, ordered new fuel head and replaced with new oem part. 2 months later, the engine started stumbling while driving on the highway and died on highway. coasted to side of road, managed to eventually restart, and made it home. opened hood and found leaking fuel head, from heater socket, diesel fuel draining from plug port at rate of about an oz per minute. electrical plug was burned up, pins electrical pin on inside of fuel heater port destroyed.

The heater connector on the fuel filter housing has developed a significant fuel leak. this issue caused the vehicle to stop running at a traffic light in heavy traffic. i had to call for a tow. the tow truck guy hopped into the vehicle and turned the key to put in neutral so that he could load the vehicle. he left the key on and within a minute smoke was rolling out from under the hood. i thought the thing was going to catch on fire. i had no fire extinguisher (why would you need one for a new vehicle?). i jumped in the vehicle, turned off the key, popped the hood, and pulled the heater plug off (which was where all the smoke was coming from). obviously, fuel leaking on electrical connectors (especially an electrical fuel heater component), doesn't make for a safe mix. this issue has already been reported to the nhtsa and has also been reported on various jeep forums. this issue is a safety issue and should be addressed by the manufacturer. *jb

2005 liberty crd diesel fuel heater element is clearly a fire hazard. i see the investigation pe07041 has been closed. this is an error, i have seen on the forums many people with the same problem. although mine caused a loss of prime so the engine needed to be primed every am upon further investigation i can see how this is clearly a fire hazard that i suspect exists on all of these vehicles and until a problem exists the disaster is just waiting to happen possible causing fires and loss of life. suggestion-jeep replace the element with a racor or similar unit that does not pose the fire hazards. i have pics i would gladly send you as evidence. i had to pay for the repair part but issue is of course this is the same unit that had the problem and only one available from jeep. *tr

The fuel filter head unit on my 2005 jeep liberty crd diesel has a defective design. it is a well documented issue with owners of these vehicles. the fuel heater in the filter head appears to overheat and cause a fuel leak. this causes a dangerous situation to occur as fuel leaks onto wires which are used to power the fuel heater. once this leak begins, it introduces air into the fuel system which can damage the injector pump or cause a sudden loss of power which may cause a traffic hazard. i have taken pictures of the effected parts. they can be viewed here: this is the burnt connector: http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g222/chadhargis/webpics/p1010031.jpg this is after priming the fuel head, you can see the fuel bubbling out: http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g222/chadhargis/webpics/p1010032.jpg this the connector on the fuel head. notice the burnt area inside: http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g222/chadhargis/webpics/p1010034.jpg. *tr

I have a 2005 jeep liberty crd. the heating element and plug in the fuel filter assembly in my fuel system is scorched and shows signs of burning. the fuel pre heater comes in contact with air and diesel fuel, and scorching or ignition could cause a vehicle fire. i am concerned that the signs of scorching on my heater element plug shows that diesel fuel and air are leaking onto a potential fire causing electrical component. *tr

When refueling the vehicle, gas splashes or spits back out of the gas tank prior to the gas station pump turning off. the amount of gas that splashes or spits out of the tank varies but occurs 100% of the time at all gas stations. the slashed volume appears to be a few ounces up to a quart and has splashed back up to a distance of 24. the gas usually splashes on the vehicle itself and on the ground and will splash on the operator if he/she is close enough to the tank or holding the pump. the gas has splashed/spit back on me a few times. the failure occurs regardless of the pumping speed - it occurs with the pump on the top notch (fast), the bottom notch (slow), anywhere in between and also if you fill it manually without the notches. the vehicle is never topped off'.

When filling the car with gas it does not stop it pops out and if you are in the way will go all over you on the ground and the car. plus you are paying for gas that is not in your car.

I can only pump 50 cents worth of gas at a time into my 2005 jeep liberty. the check engine light is on with the evap code. i took my jeep to my mechanic anh he cannot find any blockages or anything bent. he called two different local jeep dealers and they claim they have never heard of this problem. i do not understand how they have never heard of this when there are multiple forums about this issue. my mechanic is going to continue to research for a solution for this problem.

Fuel overflow issue: while refueling, tank will consistently overflow large amounts of gasoline onto the ground. problem occurs regardless of gas station used. problem has occurred consistently for several years. this problem is a safety and environmental issue and should result in a recall before somebody is injured or the environment is further soiled. internet research indicates that numerous other owners have reported this problem to chrysler corporation and some may be denied repairs due to expiration of vehicle warranty. fuel/emissions/safety issues such as this should not be restricted to powertrain warranty and should be warranted for the life of vehicle. others complaints and description of problem can be found here: http://www.ridgelineownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36166 http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f176/have-fuel-spill-problems-like-many-us-submit-complaint-force-recall-974337/

When pumping gas into my car, when it approahes full, gas spills out of the tank. it does not recognize when the car is full with gas, and gas spillage occurs. i contacted chrylser and brought the vehicle for a diagnosis into a jeep dealership. the stated that the fuel tank needs replacement which would cost approximately 1600 dollars. they would only cover 50 percent, which i cannot afford, and will not take any other responsibility with helping with this repair.

I own a 2005 jeep liberty, every time i fill the car up with gas,gas it spits out at me. not just a little, it gets on my clothes, runs down my car and quite a bit ends up on the ground. this has been happening for a long time. i thought this was unique to my vehicle, but i have found out a lot jeep liberty owners have the same problem i do. when i took my car in to get fixed they said it cost $2100. the people at chrysler that i have talked to admit they have seen a lot of this and were willing to work with me, but it would still cost me $500. i believe this is extremely unsafe to me and the environment and these vehicle should be recalled because of this problem. this is not just unique to jeep liberty, but to other jeep products.

When fueling the vehicle, the vehicle no longer causes the gas nozzle automatic cutoff valve to operate before fuel is overflowing down the side of vehicle and on the ground. until this fall, the vehicle usually cutoff the nozzle as the tank was full - very full - but prior to overflow. starting two months ago, the tank always overflows at every pump used. this gasoline spill seems dangerous and is an environmental concern. i have noticed that mine is certainly not the first complaint of this nature, and it seems to be becoming a prevalent concern with this particular vehicle.
09/01/201140000
I just had to have my fuel tank replaced because the overflow function did not work when filling the vehicle with gas. the auto-shutoff did not activate causing gas to waterfall out of the tank when the pump did not shut off when filling gas. this is the same problem for which the jeep wranglers were just recalled.
10/28/201160000
The fuel tank appears to not properly vent whiling refueling which causes the fuel pump to kick off and fuel to be ejected from the tank while refueling. even when you try to refill the tank very slowly the problem is still present. some fuel stations don't have pumps that operate at a slow enough flow rate for me to be able to fill the tank. it takes about 15 to 20 minutes to fill the 20 gallon tank.

Gas tank overflows while refueling and splashing gasoline all over car, ground and person (if nearby). huge safety and fire issue. shutoff doesn't engage and happens both during the filling process or when full. pulling nozzle out some does not help problem. ambiant temperature doesn't not matter. live in colorado with both hot and cold, same issue. dozens of of complaints on this site and on jeep blogs about this issue. chrysler needs to fix before someone catches fire or a station blows up. i am sure the gas station owners would be happy to join consumers in getting this dangerous situation fixed for everyones sake.

Every time i go to fill my jeep up, the gas tank over flows. it shuts off after a second or two, but there is a significant amount of gas that goes on the floor, and all over my car!
08/06/2011
Each time i go to have gas put in my vehicle (no matter what gas station) or whether the gas is almost full or almost empty. when the gas is being filled it will spit the gas back out unless you fill it very, very, very slow and wait for the gas to settle. it spits it out on the side of the truck and has a very bad fume smell or odor after having gas pumped each time. this should be a safety concern and i do not understand why this has not been a recall via chrysler-jeep with all of the complaints i have read online.
08/01/2011102000
Gas spurts out the filler tube when the vehicle is being filled and it is near full. the automatic pumps do not shut off as they would when the vehicle's tank is full. this happens regardless of whether i am filling with the convenience lock on the handle of the pump or when filling the vehicle squeezing the pump handle myself.

I have a 2005 jeep liberty and every time i fill up my gas tank (no matter what station i am at), it always overflows. i hold the nozzle till the nozzle clicks (indicating the tank is full) and consequently a massive amount of gasoline spills out. it's very embarrassing when other people notice and unsafe for the environment. i have read many other complaints on the internet about this and i have seen youtube videos showing it as well.

The fuel tank on my liberty spews gas when filling (my warranty has expired). i filed a complaint with jeep, and their response was they would replace the gas tank if i pay a $500.00 copay, which to them is a one time gesture of good will, and to me is unacceptable. there are hundreds of complaints all over the internet on chrysler vehicles with the same problem, and it's my opinion is there should be a recall and the fuel tanks replaced as a safety precaution - warranty or not. apparently, jeep doesn't regard gas flying in your face as their problem, and i'm shocked and appalled they are not required to fix it.

As a single mother of baby twins, i am both completely freaked out as well as gratefully relieved to have found this site. the complaints read like a checklist of past issues and god willing, preventable future issues. the gas tank cannot be topped off... all things considered, this was a seemingly acceptable issue. the engine light coming on accompanied by totally unexplained stalling every so often became a problem which would cease just as randomly as it occured. finally (when pregnant and nervous) i brought it in after one too many times. apparently this jeep model/year is weather sensitive. rain seemed to be the catalyst, but i refuse to put one of those anal person car covers on becoming a slave to the weatherchannel. mechanic changed temperemental sensor which, so far, seems to be managed. the a/c fan only works at 3 and up, which is too much hot/cold for even the most anemic after more than five minutes. back to the weather, winter causes front struts to creak and moan like a geriatric beast. once again, this is annoying but seemingly innocous. four wheel drive shift only works in part time hi (or low, don't recall), which is disappointing though again, not life threatening. the combination of these defects simply feels as if it was built with indifference to the consumer. now that i have two priceless passengers, i refuse to wait for the cv joints to disengage before demanding all repairs be made and double checked by my implicitly trusted mechanic (ironically also a twin). in closing, thank you to all who contributed their stories and enlightening me to caution regarding the dangerous flaws as well as commiserating our shared frustration with the problems, like the window track disengaging, which combined are one big expensive potentiallly dangerous headache.

Several months ago, gas started violently splashing back out of the gas tank at the end of every fill-up. i investigated and found this is a well-known and well-documented with a faulty inlet tube check valve. i don't try to overly top off the tank or anything like that. this is not a user issue. see http://www.autoobserver.com/2011/02/chrysler-fuel-spit-back-complaints-rise.html. they call it fuel spit-back. the problem is my make/model isn't one of the ones chrysler has agreed to start helping with, even though it's obviously the same issue. it's very dangerous. gas is spilling and sometimes spraying outside the car at the end of every single fill-up now.

While refueling, gasoline will splash from the filler neck at the time the pump shuts off. this happens each time we refuel, and we refuel at many different locations. i have attempted to slow down the pump as the last gallon goes in, and even this has not consistently been successful. i would estimate the amount spilled to be an ounce.

I just bought a 2005 jeep liberty limited with 90k miles. my last two fillups at different pumps resulted in the pump shutting off but gas spilling down the side of the vehicle. once was with the autopump lever engaged and once was while holding the pump lever manually. there are so many complaints about this that there needs to be a recall to protect consumers from exposure and protect the environment. consider the amount of vehicles with this problem dumping gas on the ground on a daily basis. it could be a staggering amount of gas.

Every time i pump fuel, when it reaches capacity it sprays out all over the place.

Beginning in november, 2010, each time i put gas into my 2005 jeep liberty, the pump did not stop in time and gas spilled out all over the car, on the ground, and on me. as of today, december 10, 2010, is has now happened 6 times at 6 different pumps at multiple gas stations indicating there is something wrong with the car. this problem is very harmful to the environment creating toxic runoff and is harmful to me as i breathe in the fumes.

Fuel spill everytime when fill my jeep liberty
10/15/201029400
My 2005 jeep liberty limited 4wd overflows its fuel tank every time it is refueled. the vehicle has less than 30,000 miles on it, and this problem has appeared consistently each of the last 5 times i have refueled. the fuel will continue to fill and then overflow the tank unless manually stopped. the problem occurs regardless of where the fueling occurs; any fuel pump causes the problem. the problem must lie in the fuel tank system of the vehicle itself.

Gas tank overfills and spills gasoline on every fillup, started occuring at under 70k miles.

Every time i put fuel in my car, the automatic shut off does not engage. i splash gas all over my car and it drips to the ground. if i am not super careful, i also end up with gas on me and i have the smell of fuel on me. i must stand closely to my car, and i must listen to the fuel and guess when to stop pumping. i worries me everytime i fuel my car.

While refueling gas will overflow the filler tube, splashing anywhere from a pint to a quart of fuel onto the ground. this happens on every fill up. the only way to prevent it is to guess when the fuel tank is nearly full and listen for the fuel to approach the top of the filler tube with the fuel flow from the pump as slow as possible. the other alternative is to not fill the tank to full, guessing about where the fuel level is by putting your ear close to the filler hole. in either case there is still danger of spilling fuel onto the ground and on the vehicle itself. the other side effect are high levels of fuel vapor smell inside the vehicle itself. this smell persists for quite some time even with the windows in the down position. this happens every fill up and has been happening for about two years. doesn't matter which gas station i go to.

2005 jeep liberty fuel tank overflows during full tank fill-up. this has happened at multiple fill-up stations and is almost certainly not a result of any particular pump defect. during a full-tank fill up the auto-shut will engage but only after spilling fuel over the car and onto the ground creating a dangerous situation. the frequency of the issue has been increasing over the last several months. the problem now occurs after almost ever fill-up. upon further research this is a common problem experienced by many other owners of this make and model.

While filling fuel tank air trapped in the tank does not vent properly resulting in fuel spillage on the vehicle and ground. this happens at every fill up

At least a year ago i verbally notified john elway jeep-west, now go, that when adding gasoline at the filling station the auto-shut-off did not work and allowed the tank to overflow onto my person, the side of the vehicle and the cement. i was told the gas tank would need to be drained before a determination could be made. i did purchase fuel from three filling stations proving the overflowing was not a result of the equipment pumping gasoline into my vehicle.

The gas tank on my jeep 2005 liberty renegade overflows each time i fill up the car now. this happened the last three times i filled up, even tho we used different brands and gas stations. this is a serious safety hazard as it spills gas all over the person filling and the ground!

2005 jeep liberty. approx 62,000 miles. gasoline will overflow from tank when fueling before pump automatically shuts off. the gasoline will overflow at every time the tank is filled to full, regardless of station location or brand. most of the time the amount of overflow is estimated at less than a cup, but has been as much as a pint on a few occasions. this did not happen for the first 4 years the vehicle was owned, and then would only happen occasionally. the tank now overflows every time. since the issue is present regardless of the pump used, the vehicle itself is the likely defective component. i have read many reports of this issue online, but as of yet this issue has not led to a recall. this is a health and safety issue as it is a fire hazard. it is also a hazard for the person pumping the gas as the person has the gasoline spilled or sprayed on them. the spillage will also cause the car to smell of a gasoline odor and fumes are likely present. i must now make sure my 2 month old is not in the vehicle when i refuel as i am worried about him being exposed to the fumes. *tr

When filling up my 2005 jeep liberty the gas over spills. this wasn't always the case but has been happening more frequently over the time of owning the car. i currently don't fill up the vehicle due to this issue because when this happens the car smells of gas. *tr

When filling the gas tank on this vehicle, it fills up and then overflows before after the filler shuts off. this spills gasoline out and onto the ground. potential for fire and it's bad for the environment. *tr

Three times when i filled my 2005 jeep liberty, the pump shut off and then gas overflowed all down the side of the car and onto my hand and sleeve. i obviously don't fill it anymore, but this is also causing the check engine light to come on so it won't pass inspection. jeep says they've never heard of this happening even though there are several website forums which talk about this problem and also videos on youtube showing it. my own mechanic said he's heard of this happening with other chryslers also. jeep is working with me to cover part of the costs, but there's a series of parts that may have to be replaced and it needs to be retested each time. by the time all is said and done, even my part of the repairs could be substantial. i think this is a serious and dangerous problem and jeep should issue a recall before somebody is seriously hurt. *tr

Another 2005 jeep liberty sport model that started burping about a pint of fuel out of the fill when pumping gas and the tank gets to the full level. this vehicle did not do this for the first years of ownership. this happens at any station and during any weather. the only way around this is to guess how much fuel the vehicle is going to need based on the fuel gauge reading and slow the fill process down to a crawl when nearing what you think is nearly full. this is really a safety problem for both personal injury and fire. unfortunately, with the vehicle out of warranty, the manufacturer will not be doing anything about this unless forced into a recall. *tr

When refueling gas tank, fuel spews out of the filler neck, spraying owner and surrounding area regardless of the station or pump used. when tank nears the full status, it does not shut off as it should but builds up pressure and then spews out of the tank. this has occurred 5 times now. *tr

2005 jeep liberty ltd. - when fueling the vehicle on four (4) occasions now, the gasoline spews out of the fuel tank onto the owner and also down the side of the vehicle. i saw a report where the gas tank needs to be at one-quarter full for inspection and that the fuel tank should be inspected because this is a very dangerous thing to have happen. this owner will contact the dealer (john elway-west, now go dealership) to make an appointment for checking of the gas tank, etc. this vehicle is completely under warranty until 60,000 miles. if you read this and have had this experience, please write to: thank you. *tr

When fueling our 2005 jeep liberty limited 2wd the fuel sprays out of the filler neck on the ground and down the side of the vehicle. this has happened at several different gas stations at different times of the day with the fuel being discharged by hand and in the automatic mode on the fueling nozzle. it has happened to me and my wife on at least 4 different locations/instances. the vehicle will be taken to the dealership greenbrier chrysler jeep in chesapeake virginia when the current full fuel tank is at 1/4 tank so it can be inspected. this problem is very dangerous as the first two times it happened the fuel sprayed all the way to the pump not to mention up my arm and on my face. *tr
FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE - DELIVERY

My 2005 jeep liberty 4x4 was serviced on january 11, 2007 at its place of purchase (brown daub chrysler in easton, pa). i had described to my service tech the car was making a loud screeching noise when turning and that the car had pulled to the right off and on (every few days) while i was driving. the mechanic stated that he found a normal noise related to an air valve in the power steering, and there were no repairs made to the vehicle. i was operating the jeep liberty on saturday, february 3rd. i had the vehicle in park at a drive-up atm. when i shifted the car back into drive, the front tires grabbed, the car kicked forward and the steering wheel pulled to the right. the jeep rode up over a concrete curb and struck a cement pole, shattering the passenger's side front window, ripping off the door handle, causing a dent and paint damage to the passenger's side of the vehicle. beyond this problem, the jeep has been serviced for a broad range of mechanical problems at least seven other times since the purchase date (october 2004). the fuel sending unit has been replaced twice, the vehicle has had two recalls, and four months after i purchased the vehicle the sensor wires had rubbed through completely on the transmission. right now, the vehicle is at a body shop for repair and inspection. it will then be returned to brown daub for a thorough diagnostic checkup of the power steering and/or steering column. beyond the steering issue, this is not the first time the car has 'kicked forward' - normally this occurs after stopping on wet roads (at traffic lights) my main concern, again, is the steering issue that contributed to this accident. i believe it needs to be further investigated. *jb

Upon approaching a red light, i pressed on the brake pedal to make a stop. at that time the engine continued to accelerate. not knowing if i was going to be able to stop i pulled along the side of the road and released my foot from the brake. when i did this the engine kicked back down to a normal idling speed. i did contact my dealership and jeep manufacturing. waiting on a reply from jeep. *jb
FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE - STORAGE

Gas tank has no flap where the gas goes into the tank. as a result gas sloshes out of the tank when full. the pump does not shut off and the gas runs out the side of the tank. i consider this to be very dangerous. the dealer told me they checked the other vehicles in their lot and several were that way and they had no other complaints about this. this happens every time i get gas. *nm

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep liberty. during fueling gasoline would spray out of the fuel tank, which caused the surrounding area to be submerged with fuel. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the technician stated that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. a representative from the manufacturer stated that they do not have any reports referencing the failure. they would not assume responsibility for the failure. the failure mileage was 98,000.

A minor impact into the rear of a 2005 jeep liberty by a mid size lexus suv traveling about 15 to 20 mph caused the poorly designed and poorly located plastic gas tank of the jeep to rupture and leak profusely. thankfully the vehicle did not ignite on fire otherwise someone would have died. i cannot believe that this and other jeep products (the wrangler comes to mind) are allowed on the road. many of these vehicles have or had rear mounted gas tanks with little or no crush space. the liberty appears to be the worst with what could only be described as having a gas tank mounted bumper! also, the gas tank hangs well below the bumper and in most cases the vehicle that hits it from behind dives under the jeeps bumper and hits the tank directly. something needs to be done about these vehicles! *nm

Jeep changed the vehicle mpg performance with a required recall to jeep crd diesel. the recall detuned the engine. prior to recall i would get about 30+ mpg highway, after the recall i am getting 16.4 mpg highway. i was told today by a jeep representative that there was no fix available to correct the problem. i don't understand why i should have to suffer a 50% loss in mpg after their fix! *tr

The reason i'm writing is because i read in a jeep liberty diesel 2005/2006 forum that fuel leaks have been common. on july 07, 07, i parked the jeep, shut off engine, and walked inside my house. after 10 minutess, i saw smoke coming from under hood and drops of flames coming from under the jeep. the fire dept. was called to put out the fire, which burned the entire front of the vehicle.*ak

05 jeep liberty has had a code of p0456 small leak in the evap system. we took it to the dealership and they said that they couldn't find a problem and if the code came back it would most likely be the leak detection pump. the code came back two weeks later. i called the dealership they said i would have to pay for another dino test to see if they can find a fail in the system. i found out there are hundreds of people that are having the same problem. i am suggesting that this evap system leak detection pump is defected if it breaks every 2 years, the jeep does not have to be smogged in ca for 5 years that's alot of vapor going into the air. *tr

After the car died 2 times this week while driving we found fuel to be leaking from the fuel filter head where the fuel heater plugged into it. the fuel was then leaking down this line into other electrical sensors / computers, causing a fire hazard.*ak
