FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

The vehicle was being filled with fuel from a standard fuel pump equipped with an automatic shutoff sensor. when the fuel tank became full, the sensor was not triggered, resulting in fuel spraying from the fuel tank, covering the side panel of the vehicle, the ground, as well as the person fueling the vehicle. this issue has been recurring 100% of the time when the vehicle is filled using an automatic shutoff pump. different gas stations have been used with the same results. this is obviously a safety hazard considering that the person filling the tank and the car are becoming soaked in fuel, and an environmental issue due to the amount of fuel being spilled onto the ground.

Gas tank burps out gas all over the side of my car and onto the ground as soon as the gas pump clicks off. has landed on my feet a few times. it's dangerous and there should be a recall. i've seen so many people with the same issues. not acceptable. it's a safety issue and it's happening to thousands of jeep drivers. *tr

Increasingly, gas pump auto shut offs fail. at this point, 100% of the time, the gas pump auto shutoff fails, spilling several ounces of fuel on to the vehicle side and the ground beneath it. *tr

Just like many other jeep liberties, fuel spews out, when i am filling the tank up. it does not matter which station, or brand that i use. the pump shuts of, followed by about 1/4 to 1/2 gallon of fuel coming back out. this is dangerous to the environment, the body of the vehicle, and to me. i had the problem diagnosed at a local chrysler dealership as the vehicle needing a new fuel tank. i contacted chrysler this morning, and they said since there isn't a recall, they would not do anything to help me out. since this is obviously a manufacturing defect, since so many people have the exact same problem, chrysler should be fixing this problem, at their expense! i should not have to pay to fix chrysler's mistakes. *tr

Every time i fill up my gas tank, it overflows. i put on the lock and then it pumps until it overflows. gas then drips down the side of my car and onto the ground, creating a fire hazard. once this happens, i then can smell the gas fumes inside my car as well. *tr

Upon normally fueling vehicle, gas will expel from fill tube when tank is near full. this causes a serious and potentially dangerous outflow of gasoline onto pump operator, vehicle and pavement. gasoline has already damaged paint finish on vehicle. estimated environmental hazard of 1 pint per fill-up or approximately 100 pints per year. dealer charged $105 to test for condition and it was determined that fuel system spillage is caused by defective filler tube and vapor tube. repair cost estimated at $640 parts and labor. vehicle manufacturer must be responsible for defective vehicle system and not vehicle owner. this is not a maintenance item, nor was it caused by mis-use. this vehicle defect has serious safety and environmental concerns and this condition has been noted, campaigned and recalled previously on many other chrysler vehicles. request that vehicle oem pay to replace defective parts to avoid any further contamination to the environment, avoid further vehicle damage and eliminate on-going risks to persons. *tr

Every time i go to fill my jeep up, the gas tank over flows. it shuts off after a second or two, but there is a significant amount of gas that goes on the floor, and all over my car!

I can't put more than $1 worth of gas in at a time. fuel continues to back up onto me and the ground. very harmful to my family and the environment. upon doing some research it seems to be a major problem that shows up here and on many websites. jeep has already put out a service bulletin, but there needs to be a recall. *tr

Along with many others, my 2005 jeep liberty overflows with fuel about 80% of the time when i go to fill it. i have to fill it halfway and then slowly top it off the rest of the way or risk an overflow of up to a liter of fuel all over the side of the jeep and onto the ground. it does not matter whether i am holding the pump handle or if i set it to automatically shut off. this is at the least a very messy and environmental pollution, and at worst it is a very dangerous fire and explosion hazard. this is also adding to the cost of ownership as i lose an extra dollar or so of gas almost every time i fill up. i realize this may be an expensive fix, but chrysler / gm need to determine how to fix this problem before people get hurt. please investigate this problem! thank you for your time. *tr

Gasoline spills out of jeep when being filled. the gas handle stops automatically and then gas pours out. i have to have the attendant pour the litter on the spill. often times it gets on me. this happens overtime i fill up regardless of what station! i am upset to see that this is a problem for many other owners. this should've a recall. *tr

When pumping gas i can only put in less than a gallon at a time or it will all spit back out of the tank. i have been to 3 mechanics and they all said its a common problem with jeep liberty's and they need to replace the tank... think i'll wait and see if chrysler does the right thing and recalls the problem seeing how hundreds of other owners have the same problem. *tr

Fuel overflows - every time fueling up gas shuts off and flows backup and out spilling out over whoever is filling it. shut off (baffle is not closing) to keep the fuel from coming back out. extreme safety hazard..this needs to be address before someone gets seriously injured. past due for recall !!!! *tr

Fuel erupts out at end of fill up for quite some time but in this incident the fuel erupted out before 1 gallon and right after 1 gallon. a large amount came out and would have gotten on me but i recognized the sound and moved. i now have to slowly trickle the fuel in or it erupts out. *tr

The automatic shut off for the gas tank stopped working and has not worked for 6 months. when i refill the gas tank - no matter which service station i fill it up at - it overflows, spilling onto the jeep, my clothes, my shoes, etc. i try to guess when to stop filling it and sometime i guess correctly...sometimes not. this is a serious safety issue - googling it reveals it is happening to many, many jeep liberty 2005 and 2006 owners but chrysler won't do anything about it. *tr

I wanted to include my vehicle incident in regards to the complaints on the jeep suv fires. i thought it was necessary to include my entry, because unlike other incidents mentioned in the investigation, my vehicle spontaneously caught fire while i was driving it and was not the result of impact from a crash. it was a friday evening and i was traveling home on the highway during rush hour traveling with the flow of traffic at about 65 mph. all of the sudden, and without warning, my vehicle started losing speed at a rapid pace. thankfully, i was in the first lane and was able to pull immediately into the breakdown lane. all of my dashboard lights came on and while i was leaning over to inspect what could possibly be the problem, the hood of the vehicle suddenly burst into flames. i exited the vehicle swiftly and luckily a tow truck driver who had saw the smoke immediately called 911. the car was engulfed in flames in less then 5 minutes. had i not been able to exit the vehicle or had children restrained in the back seat, there could have been serious injuries or possibly a fatality. i reported the incident to chrysler after going through my insurance. there response was a polite letter telling me they were sorry for the incident, but were not responsible. the vehicle was less than 2 years old at the time and serviced regularly. the finding of the fire dept's inspection was inconclusive, but i was told in confidence that it seemed more than likely it was a faulty issue with the vehicle. after the incident, i took multiple photos of the interior and exterior of the jeep, which included under the hood since we suspected the engine was at fault. if they are useful to your ongoing investigation, please feel free to contact me so that i can email them along. thank you.

When going the gas pump to get fule and placeing it on automatic, when full the pump shuts off and then it burps back at me. spilling gasoline on me and everything around me. it is also runing the paint on my vehicle, spilling all over it everytime this happens. i have owned the jeep since 2006 and it just started doing it about 4 months ago. my teck said it must be a falty fuel tank filler neck. it was repaced at the cost of $443.50. and that did not solve the problem. he thought someone had tried to steal my gas and damaged it. it still burps everytime i fill it up. i comsider this very dangerous, besides being a nucince and damaging other things. i have checked this out on the internet and find that this is happening to several others who are owners of jeep libertys. there is a demo on you tube .

I wanted to include my vehicle incident in regards to the complaints on the jeep suv fires. i thought it was necessary to include my entry, because unlike other incidents mentioned in the investigation, my vehicle spontaneously caught fire while i was driving it and was not the result of impact from a crash. it was a friday evening and i was traveling home on the highway during rush hour traveling with the flow of traffic at about 65 mph. all of the sudden, and without warning, my vehicle started losing speed at a rapid pace. thankfully, i was in the first lane and was able to pull immediately into the breakdown lane. all of my dashboard lights came on and while i was leaning over to inspect what could possibly be the problem, the hood of the vehicle suddenly burst into flames. i exited the vehicle swiftly and luckily a tow truck driver who had saw the smoke immediately called 911. the car was engulfed in flames in less then 5 minutes. had i not been able to exit the vehicle or had children restrained in the back seat, there could have been serious injuries or possibly a fatality. i reported the incident to chrysler after going through my insurance. there response was a polite letter telling me they were sorry for the incident, but were not responsible. the vehicle was less than 2 years old at the time and serviced regularly. the finding of the fire dept's inspection was inconclusive, but i was told in confidence that it seemed more than likely it was a faulty issue with the vehicle. after the incident, i took multiple photos of the interior and exterior of the jeep, which included under the hood since we suspected the engine was at fault. if they are useful to your ongoing investigation, please feel free to contact me so that i can email them along. thank you.

When filling up my jeep for the first time (i had just bought it the previous day), the pump kicked off, and before i had time to put my hand on the pump handle, gas came spewing back out at me. about 1 - 2 gallons came out. i ended up getting gas all over my shoes and the bottom of my pants, and all over the side of my vehicle and the tire.

When filling the fuel tank, as the fuel level nears the fuel tank capacity the gasoline splashes out of the filler neck and spreads down the side of the jeep liberty and forms a large puddle on the pavement of the gas station. this large puddle of gas could cause a fire/explosion if ignited, thereby killing the occupant of this jeep liberty and other customers at the gas station. in addition to this if the large puddle of gasoline is not ignited, after about 10 minutes the spilled fuel has all evaporated into the atmosphere causing pollution to our atmosphere. i am concerned that i am violating epa emission laws.
