On a rainy morning on 11/13/2012 while merging onto the interstate my jeep liberty went into a skid and i lost control of the vehicle and hit the roadside barrier. the front and back bumpers were damaged. the problem was not the skid but that the steering wheel locked in place and could not be steered to help control the truck. this had happened at least twice before when the truck went into a skid. my husband had asked our local service dealer about it and he said that this was part of the jeep suspension and was not a defect in the vehicle operation. based on that inquiry, i thought the first time this happened, that maybe it was just a fluke. however, now i am not so sure. i do not believe that the steering column on a vehicle should locked in place and not allow the vehicle to be controlled. additionally, i have been waiting eight months for my local jeep dealer to get the part for the latest safety recall, l27/nhtsa 12v-085 rear suspension lower control arms. we checked last month and the service department stated that we were still number two on the list and when they got the repair part we would get the repair part. we have been told since may 2012 that we were number two on the repair list. i need answers on why my steering wheel does this or i need to get rid of this vehicle because if this happens again i might have very different results than the past two times.

My jeep recently was unable to start the engine. it was fine just the night before with no indication of a problem, but in the morning i turned the key and all i got was a click at the relay; the starter never engaged and the engine would not turn over. after much diagnosis it was discovered the problem was due to the end breaking off of a small metal cylinder which rotates to engage the starter; the cylinder is located on the left underside of the steering column. i was informed by the mechanic that the cylinder, nor the housing containing the cylinder, is sold as a separate part... i was forced to replace the entire steering column assembly to the tune of $300 (the labor was another $200, and a new ignition cylinder an additional $30), to fix this one small part that probably cost about $5 to make. in my research online, i found that this is a common, well-known problem with jeeps, with many people complaining on forums about the same issue. the only action i knew to take was to file a complaint here to hopefully initiate a recall of this part so that it either a) is replaced with a part made of better material so as to stop so many from breaking, and b) stops leaving people stranded with a non-working vehicle with no warning whatsoever.

Laet night i had stopped at a traffic light and had begun to move when i heard a noise coming from the back end of the jeep. i was then driving at about 30 - 35 mph when the backend started to slide out like i was on ice. since there was no ice i pulled over to check it out with a flashlight. i checked the wheels, put the hazard lights on, and since i was pretty close to home i drove between 10 - 15 mph. today i found out the one of the control arms was so rusted that it broke and the other was rusted badly where it was welded. nothing else on the bottom of the jeep looked so rusted and i take good care to get the under body washed often in the winter. the arms looked like they had been sitting in a junk yard for 20 years or so, they were that bad! we called the local jeep dealer to ask about a warranty or even a recall but were informed there was neither. she gave us a number to call at chrysler which we did immediately. we were told the same thing there but they gave us a case number. i did find an article on the internet from sept. 20, 2011 that said there were at least 11 complaints of the same problem and that it was being investigated by nhtsa. i was lucky enough that i wasn't driving on the freeway 70 + mph since i usually leave for arizona this week. since there may be other jeep owners out there unaware that this could happen, i decided to make this complaint. i think that this is excessive rust on a vehicle only 7 years old. even though there was no accident or a death, please take this complaint seriously. i do have some really good pictures of the parts before they were removed from the jeep if you need them.

I was on my way home from my job early and i had noticed a funny grinding sound when i pulled out of my parking space. i got out, checked around the truck and saw nothing. i then drove home about 7 miles from my house my car had began going right then left and i was unable to steer it at all. i was fortunate that i was not going fast and i was able to stop and pull into a parking lot. i would have crashed if this had happened minutes before when i was on the interstate. i had my car towed to the nearest garage and learned that the rear suspension control arms had both completely rusted through and the only thing keeping my jeeps rear end together was a sway bar. the mechanic says he had never seen anything like it. i have contacted chrysler also. i purchased the car in connecticut.

My jeep is making winding and grinding noises. i thought that it was the ball joints which chrysler eventually agreed to replace since it is considered a repeat recall for them but the noise, vibration and shimmy in the steering has persisted and the service dept. at the dealer informed me that i also need control arms and sway bar links. the service rep told me that it was not considered to be normal wear and tear. i contacted chrysler and the person assigned to my case told me he would get back to me to follow up. days later when i finally tracked him down in between his breaks and phone calls he told me that the dealer told him that it was just normal wear and tear. i haven't taken my car off road and it hasn't been in the snow or on salty roads. the last time that i tried to reach him i was told that he did not work on wednesdays. still no response from chrysler from anyone regarding whether or not its a safety concern that they will cover or assist with. i updated my case with the info that i would add to your ongoing investigation if i did not receive an update regarding assistance from them. the jeep is 5 yrs. old and is still making a horrible noise on the front driver's side and i cannot get a response of any kind from chrysler. i have a power train warranty in effect until the end of november. please let me know if you can assist with expediting this matter with chrysler since i do not feel safe driving the jeep in this condition. originally, i was told by my case manager that everything including the control arms and sway bar links would be replaced along with the ball joints but now i'm being told that it was a miscommunication because its normal wear and tear. thank you, monica barronton 786.301.3003

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep liberty. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start after several attempts. the vehicle was then towed to a local mechanic where he was advised that the ignition switch and steering column would need to be replaced. there was no electrical current passing through the starter and the mechanic advised that there were aluminum pieces that fractured in the steering column and caused the failure. the vehicle was not repaired because the parts needed were on backorder. the contact believed that the manufacturer was ignoring the issue which he stated was a severe safety issue. in addition, the contact stated that the transmission was replaced twice since owning the vehicle. the failure mileage was 85,100. the vin was not available.

I have a 2005 jeep liberty whose ignition switch just failed. had it towed and the ignition switch must be replaced (which is under warranty), but it entails also exchanging the steering column (which, is not under warranty). they are telling me that i have to pay $800.00 to fix this my warranty which is still under effect that components not listed are not covered unless required as a direct result of the failure of a covered component. having read complaint after complaint with jeep liberties starting with year 2002 to present, it becomes obvious that this is a serious defect and it appears jeep has done nothing to rectify this problem and is coercing people (even under warranty) to pay for this. the parts are not even immediately available. this has not been resolved yet, but i think it is serious to note the incident. thank you *tr

I was driving down my 3/10 mile private road, approximately a 12% grade with brake pedal engaged when suddenly the pedal went to the floor and the steering wheel locked. the car went 150' & down a 12' embankment head first onto a gravel drive and landed upside down. i was conscious at all times and crawled out the passenger side window. it was an hour before i was found. i had 2 broken legs & cracked 2nd vertebra. i spent 5 months in hospitals & a nursing home with a halo on my head & fixators on my legs. the car was totaled. *jb

I received a recall notice on my 2005 jeep liberty around the end of march stating that the ball joints could corrode and come apart while the vehicle is being driven causing a crash. my husband and i purchased the vehicle from auto world in big stone gap, virginia. we have called them several times since received the recall notice was received. however the problem still has not been corrected. we called them again about a month ago and was told that daimerler chrysler is not sending them the parts that they need to fix the recalled vehicles and that they are only getting 1 or 2 sets of ball joints per month from them. at that time they told us that we were #12 on their list and we have not heard anything since. i find this totally unacceptable. this is my only means of transportation to and from work so i do not have any choice but to drive it and hope that i do not get killed while doing so. also, it has come to my attention that the initial recall notice appeared in consumer reports magazine in november of 2006. i did not receive a recall notice until march/april of 2007. i can assure them that if any of my family members are injured or killed due to this problem i will own their company. i would appreciated any assistance with this matter.

I purchased this liberty renegade in october of 2006 and have been experiencing problems with it since. the main symptom is that when it is (or has been) raining, there is a very loud humming noise that comes from the area of the wheels, especially when turning one direction or another. i had the recall work done on the lower ball joint and on the material of the brakes (twice) and the same symptom is happening. the reason i bought this vehicle was because i have to drive over snow covered mountains to get to air national guard duty, and i certainly do not feel very safe. i am going to have to take the car back for a 4th time and there are only 18.000 miles on it. *jb

My 2005 jeep liberty 4x4 was serviced on january 11, 2007 at its place of purchase (brown daub chrysler in easton, pa). i had described to my service tech the car was making a loud screeching noise when turning and that the car had pulled to the right off and on (every few days) while i was driving. the mechanic stated that he found a normal noise related to an air valve in the power steering, and there were no repairs made to the vehicle. i was operating the jeep liberty on saturday, february 3rd. i had the vehicle in park at a drive-up atm. when i shifted the car back into drive, the front tires grabbed, the car kicked forward and the steering wheel pulled to the right. the jeep rode up over a concrete curb and struck a cement pole, shattering the passenger's side front window, ripping off the door handle, causing a dent and paint damage to the passenger's side of the vehicle. beyond this problem, the jeep has been serviced for a broad range of mechanical problems at least seven other times since the purchase date (october 2004). the fuel sending unit has been replaced twice, the vehicle has had two recalls, and four months after i purchased the vehicle the sensor wires had rubbed through completely on the transmission. right now, the vehicle is at a body shop for repair and inspection. it will then be returned to brown daub for a thorough diagnostic checkup of the power steering and/or steering column. beyond the steering issue, this is not the first time the car has 'kicked forward' - normally this occurs after stopping on wet roads (at traffic lights) my main concern, again, is the steering issue that contributed to this accident. i believe it needs to be further investigated. *jb

I purchased a 2005 jeep liberty limited on 05/23/2006. prior to taking delivery of the vehicle, i took it for a test drive and i noticed that the vehicle was pulling to the right and was told by the salesperson that it probably just needed an alignment. i received an we owe you for the alignment. the vehicle was taken back to the dealership for the alignment. the mechanic stated on the service slip that after he performed the alignment the liberty still pulled to the right and he stated that it was due to the crowning of the roadway. the road had nothing to do with it. it has gotten worse and i even drove it on a flat surfaced parking lot, first doing about 25 mph and it pulled right and then letting liberty coast and it still pulled right. i have owned and have driven several vehicles and i have never had this problem. received a call from a customer service rep regarding the visit to the service dept. for the alignment and they were told that the vehicle was still pulling to the right and that i was not happy with my experience purchasing this jeep, they informed me that they would notified the service manager. i have not been contacted by the service manger. after doing some research on the internet, i see that jeep has had some problems with the pulling right issue, and has had some recalls. it still pulls to the right and seems to be worse. number of failures would be everytime i drive the thing. this is a major safety issue that jeep chrysler needs to get fixed. the other concern i have is with the goodyear wrangler hp tires. these are not safe for this vehicle. i was at a stop light waiting to make a left turn, completely stopped waiting for the light to turn green. it had just started to sprinkle. when the light turned green, i started to go forward and was just making my turn when the vehicle fishtailed and i spun completely around and was facing oncoming traffic. how could a vehicle spin out upon starting from a complete stop at a stop light??? *nm

Purchased 2005 jeep liberty 9/29/05. the tire pressure sensor light was on immediately. took vehicle back to dealership and complained that the vehicle pulls badly to the right, especially at 65+ mph. the dealership fixed the tire pressure sensor, but told me the pulling to the right must be due to road conditions. after reading other customer complaints, i doubt it. when driving at highway speeds it is difficult to maintain in lane. if large tractor-trailer trucks pass this will create even more intense struggle to keep vehicle on the road. safety concerns regarding winter snow conditions are a deciding factor on keeping the vehicle. *nm

My vehicle has a steering problem; i understand that the ball joints have been recalled. the dealer (berry, in corsicana, texas), says that there is no recall for my vehicle and refuses to work on it. i have already had it in for service, prior to learning about the recall, three times with no resolution. this has been ongoing since there were 22,000 miles on the vehicle. now, there are 31,000 miles. *nm

2005 jeep liberty crd will sling shot itself when starting from a stop with the a/c on. when you start to accelerate making a turn from being stopped the vehicle will start to move and you can feel, hear the engine gaining rpm but not movement then a sudden slingshot effect will take place. the selling dealer said it was normal for a diesel engine with a turbo to do this. also stated it was in the electronics and there wasn't any thing they could do to repair it. i would have to wait for a factory bulletin to come out. this new vehicle pulls to the right constantly, i requested the alignment to be corrected during the same dealership visit as above. i was told my alignment was checked and there was no abnormal tire wear so it must be the crown of the road causing the pull or drift. this vehicle also surges when the cruise control is engaged and you start up an incline, it will continue to surge as long as the incline lasts. after picking the vehicle up at the dealership today i started home and all three of the faults occurred. i returned to the dealership and the shop foreman went with me , where the vehicle again acted up. he said there was not any thing they could do about the surging and the alignment and the sling shotting was turbo lag. i have not diven the vehicle on wet or snow covered pavement, however, with what does i not sure i want to.

My 2005 jeep liberty has a recall for safety chrysler safety recall f23- and we only found out by accident, in speaking to many other people who have the same type of vechile and same year none of these people ever received any notice from daimler chrysler- when we found out about this recall - 60 days ago we called the dealer and i also contracted daimler chrysler - i was told that the dealers only get about 3 fix kits per week- and we are now number 96 on a wait list. nhts needs to lite a fire under daimler chrysler to get more fix kits out and to make them notify owner and we are the orginal ower of any further recalls
