Recieved notice about the recall of rear suspension lower control arm and the details of approximately how long it would take to fix given an appointment has been made and part was ordered. made an appt. with dealer two weeks in advance and according to the recall statement the work would take approximately an hour but give it more time in case of a congested schedule oat dealer. at no point was i made aware that the work would apparently take half of the day. this dealership is approximately an hour from my home and was not prepared to spend half of the day sitting in the dealership, nor was i made aware that i should be prepared to spend half the day there when the recall notice says the work only takes an hour. therefore, my car is still not fixed and i will have to find another jeep dealer that will better adhere to the appointment time they had me make.

While merging onto route 17 in nj ( a highway) in my 2005 jeep liberty and going approximately 45mph the upper ball joint on the front drivers side broke causing that drivers side wheel to come off and become wedged between the lower control arm and the road . luckily i managed to get the jeep to slide to a complete stop on the shoulder of the road without colliding with any other vehicels. unfortunately this same type of incident occured just 7 months earlier in august of 2011 while i was driving south on the taconic state parkway at 60mph the front passenger upper ball joint broke apart causing that wheel to fall off and under the jeep, once again a miracle that i managed to get the truck to slide off the road without involving any other cars !

While driving to my workplace, i noticed my jeep swaying on the road, which i first attributed to icy road conditions. however, when i stopped the vehicle i saw that my rear control arms were severely rusted, with the left rear arm almost sheared through with rust. i was able to nurse the jeep liberty two miles to a safe parking place with my flashers on and driving about 10 mph. thankfully i was on back country roads and not driving at higher speeds! who knows what might have occurred if i had been driving at highway speeds? hopefully, i can be compensated by chrysler corporation for the cost of my repairs and towing. i find it unfathomable that such critical components would rust through on a vehicle with 70,000 miles.

I had just pulled off of the highway and had stopped. i pulled on to the city street when i heard a noise. i at first thought i had a flat tire. and when i was trying to pull off to a side street my jeep had started to slide sideway into the other lane. i could not control the jeep. i felt like i was sliding on something. thank goodness no one was next to me or coming in the other lane or i would have caused an accident. i got my jeep stopped and then made my way back into the other lane and turned down a side street to get out of the way. when i got out i looked on the passenger side looking for a flat. but no flat. i could see that the rear tire was slide back close to the under side of the wheel well. i could see that something had broke. i called my husband and when he got there and looked under he could see that the rear trailing arms had both broke. that they were rusted through. we had to have the jeep towed to a dealer that was close by. they had verified that they had rusted through. in all the years that i have been driving i have never had this happen to me before. i was just very thankful that i had gotten off the highway before this broke. i know that if this would have happened at a much higher speed i could have cause a terrible wreck. i can not believe after seeing all of these complaint for the exact same thing that there has not been a recall. how can a manufacturer of cars let something like this continue. the day this happened was a clear dry day. to have this happen i could have seriously hurt myself or some other people. what are they waiting for. some one to be killed.

While driving over a speed bump in a parking lot, heard a loud thunk. while driving home afterward, observed that the vehicle wasn't steering straight and swayed badly when applying brakes. inspection revealed that the right rear lower suspension control arm has rusted through, and split in two lengthwise. had this happened while traveling at highway speed i could easily have lost control of the vehicle. the dealer service department says this does not fall under the vehicle rust warranty.

The rear control arm completely rusted through and broke as i was driving on a 2 lane highway. i lost control of the jeep, luckily there were no other cars around so i was able to avoid a crash. the other arm is almost rusted through as well. this is not normal wear and tear. the corrosion is excessive! the jeep has not been used for snow plowing or anything like that. there is no rust anywhere else on the car just the rear control arms.

I was on my way home from my job early and i had noticed a funny grinding sound when i pulled out of my parking space. i got out, checked around the truck and saw nothing. i then drove home about 7 miles from my house my car had began going right then left and i was unable to steer it at all. i was fortunate that i was not going fast and i was able to stop and pull into a parking lot. i would have crashed if this had happened minutes before when i was on the interstate. i had my car towed to the nearest garage and learned that the rear suspension control arms had both completely rusted through and the only thing keeping my jeeps rear end together was a sway bar. the mechanic says he had never seen anything like it. i have contacted chrysler also. i purchased the car in connecticut.

My jeep is making winding and grinding noises. i thought that it was the ball joints which chrysler eventually agreed to replace since it is considered a repeat recall for them but the noise, vibration and shimmy in the steering has persisted and the service dept. at the dealer informed me that i also need control arms and sway bar links. the service rep told me that it was not considered to be normal wear and tear. i contacted chrysler and the person assigned to my case told me he would get back to me to follow up. days later when i finally tracked him down in between his breaks and phone calls he told me that the dealer told him that it was just normal wear and tear. i haven't taken my car off road and it hasn't been in the snow or on salty roads. the last time that i tried to reach him i was told that he did not work on wednesdays. still no response from chrysler from anyone regarding whether or not its a safety concern that they will cover or assist with. i updated my case with the info that i would add to your ongoing investigation if i did not receive an update regarding assistance from them. the jeep is 5 yrs. old and is still making a horrible noise on the front driver's side and i cannot get a response of any kind from chrysler. i have a power train warranty in effect until the end of november. please let me know if you can assist with expediting this matter with chrysler since i do not feel safe driving the jeep in this condition. originally, i was told by my case manager that everything including the control arms and sway bar links would be replaced along with the ball joints but now i'm being told that it was a miscommunication because its normal wear and tear. thank you, monica barronton 786.301.3003

While driving on a private street, heard a pop near the back of vehicle. i stopped and checked to see if i had a flat, as the car was swerving as if i had a flat tire. however, upon inspection, tire was fully inflated but it was rubbing the back of the wheel well. the wheel was off-center and the vehicle itself was lower to the wheel. i proceeded to pull into my driveway. after viewing underneath the vehicle, noticed the rusted broken arm of the suspension system (left rear). the other side is rusted and cracked as well (right rear). fortunately i was travelling in a subdivision at a slow rate of speed. otherwise i feel had i been on a busier highway at higher rate of speed, may have lost control as the car was swerving while i was only doing 20mph and under.

I was informed that i would need to replace the ball joint suspension on my 2005 jeep liberty before it could pass inspection. when i called the chrysler recall hotline, the representative stated that they would not pay for repairs to the liberty b/c it was already repaired during the recall. but they were more than willing to help me find a dealership to where i would pay for the repair. this was from a faulty design, this is not from wear and tear that occurs when owning a vehicle.

On monday night, at around 8:30pm, i was driving back home at approximately 15 mph, taking a left, and from the inside of the car, my friend and i heard a loud pop noise, then some loud grinding noise after. i quickly shifted the car to park, jumped out of the car thinking that i had a flat tire. the tires were intact. my car refused to budge, even after the police came and we had put the car in neutral, and tried to push it out of the middle of an intersection of two roads. the car refused to budge. right after the getting out of the car, i noticed that there the car had begun to leak from under the hood onto the ground. i had to call triple a to get the car towed to the nearest dealership - grava jeep dealership - and the next day, the service department at the dealership called and said that it was the lower ball joints - which was a safety recall for the jeep liberty '05, and because the lower ball joints had separated, it had caused rim damage to the car, making it unsafe to drive with - as it would damage and deflate my tire. the power steering line was also found to be leaking, of which i had never had issues with until the ball joint had separated, and the car was attempted to be moved to safety (that was when we saw the large puddle of liquid dripping out of the car). grava dealership has agreed to replace the lower ball joints under warranty, but they would not cover the damage to the rim or the power steering, although the lower ball joint caused the damage to the rim when it broke apart, and said because it was only a possibility that the lower ball joint could have caused stress to the power steering, and isn't definite, i would have to cover the entire costs. i called the reimbursement department of chrysler explaining the situation and they kept transferring me to supervisors, senior staff, other customer representatives, until finally today - 12/16 - i called 2 more times, and was told that they would only cover 25% of the rim damage. *tr

Our 2005 jeep liberty limited crd has had the lower front suspension ball joints replaced as part of the vehicle's recall notice. at approximately 30,000 miles, we went to an independent tire shop for an alignment due to poor tire wear and wandering characteristics when driving at highway speeds. the tire shop indicated that the vehicle had a defective upper ball joint and could replace the failed unit with permission from the dealer. the dealer, medved jeep, denied the claim. we took the vehicle to medved who then claimed that the upper ball joints were not defective. at approximately 37,000 miles the vehicle had a higher frequency of front end clunking, so i took it back to medved who then claimed the noise was only an extraneous battery loose under the seat. at approximately 43,000 miles, the clunking had become disturbingly frequent and more severe. i took it back to medved and they now confirm that it's a faulty upper ball joint. however, they claim no responsibility for not correcting the problem at 30,000 miles or 37,000 miles. they refused to replace the defective part, and furthermore, called in a chrysler inspector who reported that our 1-1/2 lift kit caused the problems with the ball joint. however, the boots on the ball joints are still intact and there is no visible evidence that indicates the cause of the ball joint failure (poor manufacturing versus lift kit). there has been no forensic evaluation of the failure. the upper ball joints on this vehicle have a record of failure per online forums. many failures are on vehicles without lift kits- pointing to likely underengineered component's on the part of jeep versus purely speculative conclusions that our 1-1/2 lift kit may have caused the failure. the lower ball joint engineering was faulty, and nhtsa should explore the related failures to the upper suspension ball joints. this is as potentially serious under catastrophic failure as the lower suspension ball joints. *tr

We own a 2005 jeep liberty . in jan. 2007 we received a recall letter w/ notification code f23 . we had the recall work done at bill luke in phx., az in jan. 2007 . now while here in evansville , in. we had our jeep serviced ( 11/07 ) and the mechanic showed us that the 2 front tires were worn out badly on the inside of each tire. he told us that the front end components are all good and sound so he suggested we have a front end alignment done. he also rotated the bad tires to the back and back to front. after investigating the receipts from the past recall work there was no front end alignment done after the lower ball joints were installed at bill luke in phx,az.. we just took it as if that work was done and never questioned the dealership about a front end alignment and they never said anything to us about it. we have contacted bill luke with no resolve to this serious problem they created on our jeep. we need to now replace 4 tires and get a computerized front end alignment ( approx. $ 850 ) at the cost of their negligence. we need help to resolve this matter promptly. any time any front end parts are replaced a front end alignment should be done. and trying to explain that to the dealership in phx is very hard. please help us get reimbursement for this problem that daimler chrysler created. thank you. *tr

My 2005 jeep liberty has been pulling to the right since i had the dealership replace the lower ball joints due to the recall. i've complained to the dealership since it was done and they've taken it in and looked at it several times. it has been aligned and the tires have been rotated more than is specified just trying to get it to drive straight down the road again. it has torn up to inner right front fender wells and has worn the tire down on the right front side. i don't believe my vehicle is safe to drive. it's difficult to keep it on the road because if i let go of the steering wheel even for a moment it veers off to the right immediately. *jb

There is no parts availability for safety recall f23-lower ball joints. i am writing on behalf of my wife who is the original owner. i am very concerned with this safety recall. i have been trying to get this taken care of for approximately 4 months now and every time i do the dealerships say they don't have any parts. i do not blame the dealerships, i blame the manufacturer because i have contacted a number of dealerships and it's the same story everywhere. i would like some pressure to be put on daimler-chrysler to begin to mass produce these parts as i am becoming increasingly worried for the safety of my wife. it states in the recall notice ball joint separation can result in a loss of steering control and could cause a crash without prior warning. something needs to done immediately because if something should happen i would hold both the manufacturer and the nhtsa responsible. *jb

This complaint was about daimler chrysler's failure to correct a recall in a timely manner concerning nhtsa recall campaign id number : 06v288000. this recall started on 9/11/06. i did not get a recall notice until over 6 months later . on 3/23/07, i called the dealer to schedule the repairs, and was told the earliest they were accepting appointments was june, 2007. other liberty vehicle's ball joint failures was due to the virginia sate safety inspection . because of this problem they had to take ball joints from other recalled customers in order to get the failed liberty vehicles back on the road. since this recall was for a potentially catastrophic failure something needed to be done to get these parts in so repairs could be made.

Safety recall f23 for lower ball joints on a 2005 jeep liberty; i went to the dealer to have the recall fixed. they put me on a list. i am number 143 i think. the list is so long the dealer said he can only get parts once a week to fix maybe 2 cars. i was told maybe by the end of the summer my number might be up. does this seem like it can be fixed within a reasonable amount of time? the bottom of the recall notice reads we are concerned for your safety (from chrysler) *jb

I had my vehicle in for an oil change at the dealer who sold me my 2005 jeep liberty and was informed at that time that there was a recall on my vehicle. i was not notified previous to that. that is not my major complaint. my area of concern is that i had to put my name on a list and wait until parts are available. the recall is for ball joint and while it could lead to a very serious accident chrysler seems unconcerned. my dealer told me that chrysler sends out 20,000 letters per week to notify customers of the problem but only produces 1,000 units that will rectify the problem and make the vehicle safe to drive. i feel that chrysler should be doing everything that they can to protect their customers. i feel very unsafe in my own vehicle. *nm

I have a nationwide safety recall on my 2005 jeep liberty from daimler chrysler. when i contacted my dealership as instructed by chrysler i was informed they were only receiving 3 parts a week from chrysler. as of today i am 80th on the waiting list. as you can see it will take almost 27 weeks and/or more to get my jeep fixed. my concern is the recall states the following:when the driver continues to operate the vehicle with this condition, the contamination can lead to corrosion, accelerated wear and possibly separation from the steering knuckle causing a loss of vehicle steering control increasing the risk of a crash. it appears this is a serious safety condition that could kill the people in the liberty and other vehicles if this unit fails. please let me know if you can assist in this matter. thank you, larry j. paul. *nm

My wife was working late and left to come home around 7:30 pm. she works about 30-45 minutes away on the other side of the mountain and travels very steep and windy roads. as she was coming home she heard a noise come from the front end and didn't think anything of it. as she was coming up the private dirt road to our house all of a sudden the front drivers side of the jeep collapsed and the tire popped. she could not move at all so she walked the rest of the way home and when she got home i walked down to see what was going on. sure enough what happened was the bolt holding the lower a-arm came off and the whole assembly was sitting on the ground and had made a huge hole in the tire. lucky this did not happen going up the steep and windy roads over the mountain other wise she would have definitely got into an accident. we called the chrysler road side assistance and had the jeep towed to the dealer. the next day we called the dealer they gave us a loaner car. about a week later we picked up the jeep they had replaced both front ball joints and replaced the tire with a brand new one. we only had our 05 renegade for just over a year and about 31000 miles on it. *jb

The lower front ball joints on my 2005 jeep liberty 4x4 with 26000 miles show excessive wear. due to the design of the joint total failure will result in the ball and socket separating from the spindle/wheel assembly. a failure of this nature will result in loss of control of the vehicle. this excessive wear has manifested itself in a loud clunking which has been getting worse for 3000 miles but the dealer could not locate the problem. i found the problem when doing routine maintenance and measured the up and down movement in the joint to be .25 inches. when the dealer went to install the new joints he also found the upper ball joints to be bad. i had a previous liberty(2002) which was recalled for this same problem and assumed jeep had fixed the ball joints. obviously they have not. there have been several incidents reported already (lostkj.com) where people have had a catastrophic failure associated with these joints. jeep must fix this design asap. suspension company moog has already designed a replacement ball joint that is more robust and greasable. jeep must be forced to do something. *nm

My 2005 jeep liberty was involved in a rollover accident with 4 fatalities on 9 june 07. the incident took place at highway speed on an interstate highway with no other vehicles involved. the driver and one passenger survived the accident with multiple injuries. the four passengers in the back seat of the liberty were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from the vehicle during the rollover event. the driver felt that she had no control of the steering just prior to the rollover of the vehicle. the incident is currently under investigation. *tr the consumer also stated the air bag did not deploy. the consumer stated the was a nail in the tire that could have caused low tire pressure, contributing to the loss of control of the vehicle which may have resulted in failure of the upper ball joints. a recall was performed on the lower ball joints in may 2007. updated

*tr

Purchased 2005 jeep liberty 9/29/05. the tire pressure sensor light was on immediately. took vehicle back to dealership and complained that the vehicle pulls badly to the right, especially at 65+ mph. the dealership fixed the tire pressure sensor, but told me the pulling to the right must be due to road conditions. after reading other customer complaints, i doubt it. when driving at highway speeds it is difficult to maintain in lane. if large tractor-trailer trucks pass this will create even more intense struggle to keep vehicle on the road. safety concerns regarding winter snow conditions are a deciding factor on keeping the vehicle. *nm
