Overheating of the electrical connector at the fuel heater on the fuel filter / water separator assembly can cause a fuel leak through the electrical connection.operators report the smell of diesel fuel, smoke, difficulty starting and/or poor engine operation.the fuel leakage is reported by some operators as seepage, wetness, several drops, and an oz per minute.evidence of overheating of the connection was observed by some operators and reported as burned or discolored electrical connection at the fuel heater.seven operators report smelling or seeing smoke.one reported a vehicle engine compartment fire however the cause of the fire was not identified, and linkage of the fire cause to this issue is not likely to be established.the location of the fuel filter / water separator assembly is not near the location of the turbo charger which is located on the opposite side of the engine.the turbo charger would present a potentially hot surface however due to the layout of the engine compartment and its components, diesel fuel leakage from the electrical connection would not likely migrate to the turbo charger.at this time, a safety-related defect trend has not been identified and this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety defect does not exist.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

Nhtsa has conducted extensive analysis of the data regarding fuel tank integrity for the model year (my) 1993-2004 jeep grand cherokee (jgc). as a result of that work, the agency has decided to upgrade its safety defect investigation to an engineering analysis and to expand the scope of vehicles included in the investigation. nhtsa's assessment of the data collected during preliminary evaluation (pe) 10-031 indicates that rear-impact-related tank failures and vehicle fires are more prevalent in the jgc than in the non-jeep peer vehicles. in addition, the agency's analysis of its fars data for the peer vehicles and three jeep models shows a higher incidence of rear-impact, fatal fire crashes for the jeep products.pe10-031 had focused on the fuel tank system integrity of the jgc vehicles during rear-end collisions and impacts.the fuel tank is located at the rear of the vehicle, between the bumper and axle, and is manufactured from a plastic material (hdpe).three peer vehicles (across the same my range as the jgc) were identified for comparative assessment: the chevrolet blazer, ford explorer, and toyota 4runner.odi has collected and assessed a significant volume of data for the jgc and three peer vehicles under the defect petition (dp) 09-005 and pe10-031, much of which was either provided by the petitioner or by the subject and peer manufacturers in response to odi's information request letters.nhtsa has also utilized its fars database.fatal crash data was collected for the jgc and its three peers, along with data for two other jeep vehicles, the cherokee and liberty, which were also manufactured with rear mounted fuel tanks and assessed by odi as jeep peer vehicles.based on the agency's current analysis, odi has upgraded its investigation to determine whether the subject vehicles contain a defect that presents an unreasonable risk to safety.the subject vehicles for the investigation will be my 1993-2004 jgc, my 1993-2001 cherokee, and my 2002-2007 liberty.the estimated production volumes for these vehicles are shown above, although attrition is a factor for the older vehicles.please note that the counts shown in the above failure report summary are for the jgc only (values shown in the total column are unique).data for the other jeep models and possibly other peer models will be collected during the investigation.the odi reports cited above can be reviewed online at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints under the following identification (odi) numbers: jgc:506249, 549376, 734783, 869217, 10009553, 10335943, 10351589, 10351980, 10357528.liberty:10357195, 10366653 (duplicate of 10357195), 10138726, 10149256, 10181332cherokee:10409104

Several things 2 list: vehicle = 2.8l diesel jeep liberty, 2006. the codes are p0093 & u0121. 1st) it says a large leak in the fuel system. something in the emission system. has happened several x's. i've had it towed 4 this. engine runs rough & quits @ x's. no power. changed fuel filter & did air leak test in the fuel return system / tech at dodge jeep dealer. no air in return line found. problem still exist on an intermitant & sporadic x frame since june 2010. last x occurred = 8-20-10ish. 2) low boost from hole in the waste gate actuator vacum tube from improper routing at factory. found by tech at jeep dealer. 2 visits many hours & $$$. egr valve replaced @ same time. big $'s. 3rd) belt squeak from bearing going out in a/c compressor /dealer tech??? 3rd visit. need a/c compressor he says. previously changed tensioner pulley for this problem but did not fix problem. they now say its the a/c compressor??? 4th) right rear electric window motor failed 10-2-10. replaced motor/regulator assembly 10-7-10= $172.99. i should be reimbursed for all parts & labor for these damages. i paid a lot of $ for a supposedly good vehicle but it keeps failing. 5th) part time 4x4 light on dash says its in part time 4x4 when in two wheel drive. haven't repaired cause of $. please note that because of low power i was almost in several accidents because of the low turbo boost at acceleration. there could be injuries or fatalities in the future if this happens to someone else that's not mechanically inclined and not aware of reduced engine performance of a turbo failing slowly like mine because of a small hole in the waste gate actuator tubing from vibration on the housing bracket by the tube. was replaced and rerouted by dealer tech.

My 2006 jeep liberty has a defective gas tank. when filling the tank completely full, the fuel pump nozzle will shut off only to have gasoline come pouring out of the tank onto me, my clothes, the outside of the vehicle, and all over the ground. after investigating the problem, it turns out i'm not the only one with this problem. jeep should be held responsible for installing gas tanks that are deemed to fail. the cost of this gas tank alone, quoted by the dealership is $1400.00, and the filler line is an additional $300.00. this is ridiculous. engine problems are one thing, parts due wear over time and this is understandable. but to have a gas tank that is potentially dangerous by spewing gasoline at consumers and being an environmental hazard is not acceptable. and chrysler/dodge/jeep not taking responsibility for their faulty manufacturing is not acceptable. and lets not forget that the government spent millions of dollars to bale them out, which turns out to be taxpayers money, our money, and they won't stand by their products. shame on you!! looks like i'll be purchasing a toyota fj cruiser instead of an american made classic in the future. thanks for nothing jeep

On each fill up, gasoline shoots out of the nozzle receptor. this occurs with the operator holding the handle in or with the latch pushed down to hold the handle down. approximately a quarter cup of fuel shoots out of the tank upon overfill. i have called several dealers and the dealer insists the tank has been compromised by ethanol based fuels. i have never filled up with anything but 87 octane. the dealer wants me to pay $5000 for a new gas tank. this occurs at every gas station and i have tried to fill the tank on the slowest setting. neither method helps the overfilling. this is not only a safety concern for me, but an environmental hazard.

I purchased a used jeep in wisconsin that does not follow nhtsa or epa standards. the jeep overflows when filling the gas tank and spills gas on the ground at every gas station. this is a common issue with jeeps and needs to be recalled. it often requires replacement of the fuel tank or lines. my car is not under warranty since it was purchased used. i am extremely concerned of fire, pollution and my wife's safety with this hazardous issue.
10/01/201050000
Hi, i have owned this jeep liberty since 2008 and bought it with 2700 miles on it. the problem i have and many others have is with the filler neck on the fuel tank. it overflows gas every time you fill. even if i slow it at the approx time the meter says it should be getting full. the internet research shows that the new gas tank assembly from jeep has a new/fixed safety valve in the filler neck that is supposed to help with a rollover accident but apparently slaps shut when filling causing the gas puke on clothes, shoes, ground, etc. it is not good for the environment, pocket book, or other people at the gas station as spilled gas is a significant safety concern. it is a chronic failure and jeep should do something. sell part at loss/severe discount, replace for free would be nice, acknowledge the problem is a big issue and stand up and fix it even though it is not the classic, this causes accidents and we better do something so we don't get sued type of safety recall. thanks in advance for the help.

After viewing some recommendations online about jeep liberty crd vehicle fires i decided to check the component listed as having possible issues on my vehicle. the electrical connection for the fuel heater located on the fuel filter assembly was in fact scorched and soaked through with diesel. a fire has not occurred, however i am seriously concerned that it could and that there is not a mandatory recall on this product. i have left the connection unplugged but winter is coming and i live in an area where that heater is necessary.

2006 jeep liberty gas shut off valve does not engage and gas overflows upon filling up gas tank. has happened everytime i fill up the gas tank over the past 4 months.
07/23/201143724
Upon filling gas tank with fuel, the shutoff engages too late, and gasoline pours out down the side of the vehicle onto the ground. this does not matter which gas station is utilized, but happens whenever reaching a full tank, even when care is taken not to engage the spout at its maximum capacity. this is an ongoing issue, since i purchased the car last september, and so the following approximate incident date should be - ongoing.
06/24/2011
Every time i try to fill the gas tank, it overflows. it doesn't matter what station or pump. if i use the automatic lever on the pump, the gas comes squirting out all over my car, my shoes, and the ground. even if i don't use the lever, and squeeze the pump handle myself, the pump still does not shut off before overflowing. it is a problem with the car, not the gas pump or the operator.
01/01/201045000
Gas tank overflows every time when attempt to fill tank full. dealer says problem can't be fixed and tank must be replaced. not covered by warranty and cost is over $1500 to replace. this seems like a safety issue they should take care of.

The jeep liberty has regularly spit out quantities of gasoline while filling up at gas stations. the quantities range from 1 to 8 ounces, with the quantity that poured out today the largest amount yet. the quantities vary by how fast the pump is pumping and whether the pump is hand operated or on automatic but some quantity of gas comes out almost every time. the spill today left at least 4 to 6 ounces of gasoline on the ground which is both an environmental and safety hazard.
02/15/201185000
When fueling the tank the gasoline pump will not turn off when the tank gets full causing a significant amount of gasoline to spill down the side of the vehicle and onto the ground as well as splashing all over the handle and the person holding the handle. this happens every time the tank is filled regardless of weather or location.
09/24/200935283
When ever jeep is fueled up , fuel gushes out of filler neck when nozzle shuts off ,slow or fast, it makes a mess on jeep and on the ground. big fire hazard.

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 jeep liberty. the contact was driving approximately 25 mph coming to a complete stop with the front driver side window in the downward position. the contact attempted to activate the window mechanism. however, the window failed to operate upwardly. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on two separate occasions for the identical failure. the vehicle was repaired under the service warranty. the repair part was unknown. also, the front passenger side window would not function in an upward position. in addition, when dispensing fuel into the fuel tank to the full capacity level; the fuel would continuously spray out of the tank without shutting off. the fuel tank was replaced at the dealer. the failure mileage was 8,000. js
05/10/2009590001
When filling the gas tank pressure builds in the tank and forces the gas back out under pressure creating a spray the covers the person filling the tank, and side of the vehicle. this is caused by a broken / clogged fuel tank vent. this occurs everytime you fill the tank. trying to fill the tank at a low fill rate doesn't improve the situation. *tr
