Nhtsa has conducted extensive analysis of the data regarding fuel tank integrity for the model year (my) 1993-2004 jeep grand cherokee (jgc). as a result of that work, the agency has decided to upgrade its safety defect investigation to an engineering analysis and to expand the scope of vehicles included in the investigation. nhtsa's assessment of the data collected during preliminary evaluation (pe) 10-031 indicates that rear-impact-related tank failures and vehicle fires are more prevalent in the jgc than in the non-jeep peer vehicles. in addition, the agency's analysis of its fars data for the peer vehicles and three jeep models shows a higher incidence of rear-impact, fatal fire crashes for the jeep products.pe10-031 had focused on the fuel tank system integrity of the jgc vehicles during rear-end collisions and impacts.the fuel tank is located at the rear of the vehicle, between the bumper and axle, and is manufactured from a plastic material (hdpe).three peer vehicles (across the same my range as the jgc) were identified for comparative assessment: the chevrolet blazer, ford explorer, and toyota 4runner.odi has collected and assessed a significant volume of data for the jgc and three peer vehicles under the defect petition (dp) 09-005 and pe10-031, much of which was either provided by the petitioner or by the subject and peer manufacturers in response to odi's information request letters.nhtsa has also utilized its fars database.fatal crash data was collected for the jgc and its three peers, along with data for two other jeep vehicles, the cherokee and liberty, which were also manufactured with rear mounted fuel tanks and assessed by odi as jeep peer vehicles.based on the agency's current analysis, odi has upgraded its investigation to determine whether the subject vehicles contain a defect that presents an unreasonable risk to safety.the subject vehicles for the investigation will be my 1993-2004 jgc, my 1993-2001 cherokee, and my 2002-2007 liberty.the estimated production volumes for these vehicles are shown above, although attrition is a factor for the older vehicles.please note that the counts shown in the above failure report summary are for the jgc only (values shown in the total column are unique).data for the other jeep models and possibly other peer models will be collected during the investigation.the odi reports cited above can be reviewed online at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints under the following identification (odi) numbers: jgc:506249, 549376, 734783, 869217, 10009553, 10335943, 10351589, 10351980, 10357528.liberty:10357195, 10366653 (duplicate of 10357195), 10138726, 10149256, 10181332cherokee:10409104

Beginning at approximately 35,000 miles on the vehicle, fuel would spit-back immediately after the fuel nozzle shut off. the amount of fuel spit back was significant, drenching the lower half of the person fueling the vehicle. at first, we thought this might be an issue with the fueling pump, but found it repeated itself at every pump and at every station we utilized. it does not seem to depend on rate of fueling, as even attempting to fuel slowly results in a dangerous spit back of fuel and potential drenching of the individual. the vehicle was inspected by the dealer and a defective valve in the fuel tank was diagnosed as the cause of the problem. interestingly, after reporting the labor charge of $200 to investigate the issue, we were told that they have seen a number of jeeps with this problem. one would think common problems could be found without this level of labor. the valve in question cannot be obtained as an individual unit and the entire fuel tank must be replaced at the cost of approximately $900. given that numerous other chrysler vehicles of this year, including wrangler, dodge durango, liberty, and other models across the chrysler, dodge, and jeep brand exhibit this problem and that lacking significant moving parts, one cannot justify a fuel tank component failure after 35,000 miles, this issue is unquestionable a design failure. given the immediate hazard of fire, long term health risks, and environmental impact of repeated events of fuel spit back from these vehicles requires intervention.

Extreme blow back and spilling onto ground when filling fuel at gas station pump.

This is a fuel overflow issue. when i am fueling the jeep as the tank gets full and the gas pump clicks off, fuel spills out of filler tube onto side of vehicle and the ground. this seems like a safety problem with raw gas all over the ground. when the jeep was new this didn't happen, now it happens every time i fill the tank up.

Gas tank overfills and gas spills all over the ground and vehicle. automatic shut off valve does not work or defective gas tank.

Fuel spills out after filling up at gas station. i am not topping off. i allow the pump to stop automatically while holding pump and a sizeable amount of gas gurgles out when it is done. huge safety issue.

My girlfriends 2007 jeep liiberty consistently over flows when refueling. i am an experienced mechanical engineer and after researching this problem i suspect this is a design flaw and a significant safety hazard. strongly recommend you look at this right away.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep liberty. the contact was entering a parking space when the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was then towed to the dealer and they advised him that the fuel pump had failed and would need to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired for the fuel pump. the manufacturer was contacted and they offered a reimbursement. in addition, the contact stated that when driving at low speeds and attempting a turn, the steering would become hard to maneuver. the vehicle was later inspected by a dealer and they advised her that the rack and pinion and the power steering pump needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired for the pump alone. the failure mileage was approximately 38,000.

I own a 2007 jeep liberty and have a consistent problem with gas pumps not shutting off at any of the stations where i have purchased gas. this issue started a few months ago and at first i just assumed it was related to a particular pump, but have found that it overflows no matter where i purchase gas. i believe that this is a serious danger and certainly an environmental issue especially when such efforts are made to even control vapor emissions on modern vehicles. i have contacted chrysler but they said that there is nothing they can do about it. i have done some research online and found this to be a very common problem with jeeps. i

The 2007 jeep liberty sport my parents and 3 year old child were in was t-boned on the passenger side by another car that was traveling at approx. 45 mph upon impact, resulting in the jeep rolling over several times. the other car struck the jeep directly in the middle, causing the middle section to cave in, forcing the passenger seat into the dash/glove compartment. the rear axle on the passenger side separated from the frame, the drive-train separated, the gas tank ruptured, and the rear shock springs came off. the person seated in the front pass. seat sustained a spinal fracture and brain hemorrhaging. the driver sustained internal bruising/damage from hitting the steering wheel, ultimately breaking the steering column. all occupants were wearing their seat belts. *tr
