Overheating of the electrical connector at the fuel heater on the fuel filter / water separator assembly can cause a fuel leak through the electrical connection.operators report the smell of diesel fuel, smoke, difficulty starting and/or poor engine operation.the fuel leakage is reported by some operators as seepage, wetness, several drops, and an oz per minute.evidence of overheating of the connection was observed by some operators and reported as burned or discolored electrical connection at the fuel heater.seven operators report smelling or seeing smoke.one reported a vehicle engine compartment fire however the cause of the fire was not identified, and linkage of the fire cause to this issue is not likely to be established.the location of the fuel filter / water separator assembly is not near the location of the turbo charger which is located on the opposite side of the engine.the turbo charger would present a potentially hot surface however due to the layout of the engine compartment and its components, diesel fuel leakage from the electrical connection would not likely migrate to the turbo charger.at this time, a safety-related defect trend has not been identified and this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety defect does not exist.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

Over the past few months, i have occasionally smelled a kerosene odor while driving my jeep liberty diesel. today, i read about a common problem with the fuel heater on the liberty diesel and so i checked the heater on my vehicle. the plastic insulator around the electrical pins of the fuel heater connector (on cable) is discolored and partially melted. doing further reading this evening, i discovered that this problem can also be a source of fuel seepage. although i didn't see any evidence of fuel around the connector, this is obviously an electrical problem and may have been also been the source of the odor i have been smelling while driving. i feel fortunate to have discovered this in a pre-failure condition and have not (yet) experienced a serious fuel leak, engine fire or engine stoppage due to fuel system failure, i was disappointed to learn that your agency was aware of this design problem back in 2007 (pe07041), but closed it with apparently no action taken. in my opinion, this condition certainly warrants a manufacturer's recall and repair. i have photos of the partially burned connector on my vehicle, should you be interested in seeing them. it is quite obvious that the electrical capacity of this connector is being exceeded and is a serious design flaw.

My rear tail lights and stop lights bulbs keep burniging out. the rear passenger housing has been replaced free by the dealer. since then i have had to replace the same housing in less than two years. the rear tail lamp and brake lamp bulbs do not burn the filament the light bulbs actually explode inside the housing or melt the housing. the plugs that hold the bulbs are scorched. i have both the rear lamp and plugs to show the defect. i am not the isolated case: most liberty owners and some grand cherokee owners have had the same problems. my second complaint is a fuel leak at the connection of the fuel heating element. the filter head where the fuel filter is attached also has a heating elemnt.. the electic plug connection at the head leaked fuel onto the connection. i observed when the ignition was tuned on, the fuel leaked and vaporize as it was being shorted and heated. i disconnected the electric plug., filled the female receptacle with fuel tank epoxy and rubber plug for good measure. will be replacing scorched connection and filter head as soon as possible. i will keep all defective parts for your inspecton upon your request thank you.

On a 2006 jeep liberty 4x4 every time gas is pumped into the tank (from several different filling stations) gas over flows spilling over vehicle and over the ground posing a health and enviromental risk. i have read where this is a common problem among chrysler vehicles with no support from the company.

Uncontrolled acceleration 2006 jeep liberty crd. while stopped at a red light, engine idling, foot on the brake, my engine started to wildly accelerate. i held the brake as hard as i could and the rear wheels started spinning and burning runner and the entire car was 'jumping'. after a few seconds of this i put it into neutral and turned off the engine. when i restarted it moments later it was fine. i brought it to my jeep dealer in mt kisco ny but they couldn't ind anything wrong. it hasn't done it again. there was nothing jamming the gas pedal. the car was at a stop and idling with my foot on the brake when the engine suddenly started racing on it's own.

Read info online on www.lostkjs.com about issues with the fuel filter housing and fuel heater puck wire on my 2006 jeep liberty crd (diesel). i checked mine and noticed diesel fuel on the wiring and burn marks on the wire connector. this seems like a potential fire hazard. due to the fuel leakage and scorching of wiring i will have to get both the fuel filter housing and plug replaced. based upon the number of issues i have read about this seems like a design flaw that needs to be recalled. *tr

2006 jeep liberty crd fuel filter separator heater element evidence of pending failure and leak and fire hazard; browning of plug contact and air in system due to some sort of slow leak. this makes element overheat in aforementioned air - as it was designed to be submerged in fuel - and will melt thermoplastic plug element fitting, causing leak, which will dribble onto hot areas below - if gases not ignited by heating element first in air/fuel space created by air leak - and potentially cause fire and death. *tr

2006 jeep liberty diesel with 14,500 miles. engine dies 10-15 seconds after start. fuel system must be primed with pump on fuel filter head in order to restart engine. fuel is seeping from the fuel heater electrical connector located on the filter assembly. dealer replaced fuel filter assembly as a warranty repair. *tr

Our jeep liberty diesel as been running terribly lately, and then stalled and would not start. after looking further into the cause,i found that the fuel filter head had a fuel leak at the electrical connection for the fuel heater. it appears that the heater is over heating and melting the non-metallic filter head where the connector penetrates and seals. the connector that plugs into the filter head is black around one of the pins. i have left the heater unplugged, and for now have sealed the leak with a fuel tank epoxy patch. *tr

While doing routine maintenance under the hood of the vehicle i noticed diesel fuel leaking out of the fuel heater connector located in the fuel filter housing. i pulled the connector off and found it partially damaged by excess heat at the connector terminal and wet with fuel. i left the connector disconnected from the housing until i had the dealer replace the filter housing assembly under warranty. the burned/damaged connector was not replaced by the dealership when the housing was replaced. i don't have the old housing, but i could take a picture of the damaged connector/terminal that was still on the vehicle. also, i noticed that there was excess air in the filter housing before the replacement of the housing. after the housing was replaced there was still excess air, but not nearly as much as before. while the connector was off, and i was waiting for the replacement part the vehicle would not start 2 separate times because air was entering through the connector. i had to pump the primer that was installed on the filter housing to get the vehicle started both times.*ak

After purchasing my diesel jeep i noticed a shuddering in the transmission at about 55-65 miles an hour. considerably worse with you decelerate after acceleration. in a construction hold on traffic my vehicle idled for about 10 minutes. when i was cleared to move forward i put the gear selector in drive. the jeep stalled. it took me a several attempts to restart the motor. i have done extensive research and have come up with one answer. air is in the fuel. i have taken it to a jeep dealer in ozark alabama and in dothan alabama. chrysler tells them that the air in my fuel system is ok. i demand to know what is a safe level of air allowed in the fuel system. no one has measured the amount of air in the fuel system. please tell me so i can have it measured because i have volumes. i am afraid it will stall out on me again. i have had a few close calls when the jeep hesitated and choked after a long light and a train crossing, *jb

My wife contacted me this morning complaining the jeep wouldn't start. i walked to where she was and checked out the engine. i noticed fuel around the fuel filter mount; i bled the fuel system and the vehicle started. i got it home and check a little further and noticed fuel leaking out of the fuel heater plug. i unplugged it and a small amount of fuel dumped out. i took it to the local dealer and had them order the part. the technician said it's ok to drive the jeep until next week when the part arrives. *nm email update (6/25/2007): ...my replacement heater is overheating and leaking again.

Today my 2006 jeep liberty diesel would not start. i discovered that the fuel filter had lost prime and there was diesel fuel leaking from the heater plug connector that is connected to the fuel filter housing. i unplugged the connector and noticed that the yellow plastic plug head showed noticeable signs of scorching (brown discoloration) around the pin holes. also, when i disconnected the plug there was a hiss of air escaping from the system. no doubt this air leak is what caused my initial problem of lack of fuel pressure causing the vehicle to fail to start. however, the bigger concern here is that the system is leaking fuel and the heater seems to be shorting out its electrical components which is a very dangerous combination. *jb

Gas tank overflows when fueling because it doesn't sense when its full. i have to stop fueling before i think its full so this doesn't happen, so i am unable to fill tank completely. spills all over my clothes, on the ground and down the side of my vehicle. also i smell an electircal burning smell when i'm driving my vehicle sometimes which is very scary.

2006 jeep liberty fuel overflow hazard. when refueling our 2006 jeep liberty, fuel overflows after fuel pump automatic shutoff is triggered. this overflow now occurs every time vehicle is refueled. no one is attempting to top off the fuel tank. the overflow causes a quantity of fuel, that i estimate at two to four cups, to spill on the side of the vehicle and onto the ground. this fuel overflow flaw creates an extreme fire hazard and environmental contamination risk. this flaw occurs in the wrangler model of chrylser jeep products also, where a recall has been issued. the same flaw is occurring in many thousands of jeep libertys as is evident by the huge volume of owner statements posted on many websites. go chrylser jeep in englewood, co quoted a repair cost of $2031.00 to fix the problem. when the overflow flaw first occurred in my jeep liberty, it was an occasional problem that was impossible to predict and without a recall notice, consumers are unaware of this hazard. this flaw creates a safety hazard for the person refueling the vehicle and anyone nearby. the fuel spilled has caused property damage in the form of ruined clothing and shoes, and possibly damage to the vehicle as fuel runs down the side into crevices around the rear wheel and axle. this spilled fuel could reach the hot exhaust pipe and explode. why would the manufacturer cover this flaw under warranty for one make and model, the jeep wrangler, and not cover the identical problem for another make and model, the jeep liberty? it's the same problem created by the same manufacturer.

2006 jeep liberty overflows when filling with gas. gas sprays out with significant force. had the same problem with a 2006 durnago and the entire fuel tank and fill neck needed replaced. 2005 models were recalled, nothing on 2006 yet.

2006 jeep liberty made in may 06. this model is similar to the 07. gas tank filling to full, gasoline shoots out the gas inlet with much back pressure. it has been doing this consistently for the last couple of months since i bought the car. it makes no difference what station i go to, or how fast the gasoline is flowing.

2006 jeep liberty sport, overflows when filling up gas tank, most of the time
10/11/201041015
2006 jeep liberty sport overflows from the gas tank when filling gas. this happens at various gas stations. the automatic shut-off at service station pumps do not sense pressure to shut off. this causes fuel to spill on side of car, ground and possibly the person filling the tank. this is an environmental hazard, fire hazard and could cause harm as an inhalant.

Both rear regulators have quit working, leaving my jeep and myself vulnerable to others being able to easily enter the vehicle. we have replaced one and will be replacing the other next week due to the cost. as if that wasn't enough, the sun roof just quit working and stuck partially open. i hardly ever use it, so it did not break due to use. we took it into the dealership and it will cost $1300.00 dollars to repair, which we cannot afford. also, fuel quite often overflows when fueling, spilling gasoline down the side of my jeep as well as spraying out onto the person fueling. it does not matter how slowly we put the gasoline in, it still overflows. *tr
05/22/201036452
2006 jeep liberty sport fuel overflows out of fuel filler tube when filling gas tank no matter how slowly the tank is filled. the automatic shut-off at service station pumps does not sense the back pressure of the fill tube for these vehicles. this happens every time when refueling vehicle at any service station. each occurance causes spillage of fuel (approximately 6-12 ounces) on exterior painted surface of vehicle, on person filling vehicle and onto pavement creating not only cumulative damage to vehicle exterior but fire and environmental hazards as well. internet reasearch concerning this issue with jeep vehicles shows this to be a widespread problem accross the united states and corrective actions are very rarely addressed by the manufacturer and then only if vehicle is within warranty. obviously there is a defect in either the vehicle fuel fill tube, fuel tank or both. it appears chrysler corporation has been aware of this defect for quite some time, but has yet to recall these vehicles for the problem.

I have a 2006 jeep liberty that spews gas as it gets full. it has shot out as much as 3-4 cups worth at its worst. this happens every time it is a huge safety problem considering the amount of gas that is spilled each time.i have been told that it is a faulty venting mechanism in the gas tank and several others have the same issue on jeeps and dodges. i made mention of it at the dealership each time i have had it into the dealership. they never even looked into it. they told me that it must be the gas pump i am using. i have had it happen at gas stations in 8 states now. i am sure it is not the gas pumps. now that it is out of warranty, i am told that they could replace the gas tank at my expense. since the vehicle is so new and only has 40,000 miles on it that this should be considered their responsibility it is a safety issue though. *tr *dt

The gas tank won't shut off when filling gas, and gas spews out everywhere on the ground. there seemed to be no remedy for this except to change the gas tank which i had a dealership do... it works fine now. *tr
02/08/2010350001
This is an incident - when fueling the gas tank with the nozzle inside the gas tank opening, the fuel gushes out of the opening after the tank is full, spilling gas on the vehicle and on the ground. this is not at one gas pump, it happens at any gas station i go to. this results in a potential fire hazard and damage to the paint on the vehicle. each gas pump has an automatic vacuum shut off when the gas reaches the nozzle and is supposed to shut off the supply of gas. for some reason, the jeep liberty gushes out gas all over the place every time i fuel it. this has been a recurring event and the only reason why i have not reported it is because i did not know that this reporting mechanism was available and i was only putting in a limited amount of gas to prevent the gushing from happening. is this peculiar to just my vehicle or have others had this experience as well??? *tr

Gas spews dramatically out of the gas tank when filling. a friend of mine has the same vehicle and his does the same thing. we cannot fill our tanks full, regardless of the filling station. we estimate that 1-2 cups of gasoline spew out onto the side of the jeep. it spews far enough to saturate clothing of the person filling up the tank. my wife's hairdresser reports the same problem with her 2006 jeep liberty. *cn

Hello, i bought a 2006 jeep cherokee sport in romania kj / le85 (the liberty 4x4 jeep for europe), from casa auto romania: / 7 february 2007. my technical problems with this car, still in warranty (2 years warranty in romania) are: -the esp/bas warning lamp comes on continuously with engine running, the light remains on at speeds greater than 30mps. first, this problem was randomly appearing, but now it appears each time i am driving on highway with speeds greater than 30 miles/h . -2 times my engine lost power for no reason; -the fuel consumption urban: ca 17 l / 100 km; -the fuel consumption extra urban: ca 12 / /100 km. my car is for the second time in the service in the last 6 weeks for the same problem ? electronic stability control, the primary safety system of this vehicle. first time, after 3 weeks they said they fixed the problem. i brought it back next day with the same problem. my car is still in service. my great problem is that my authorized dealer is unable or don't want to fix these problems, waiting to expire the warranty of my car ? in few days. they don?t want to offer warranty for the pieces they replaced, they say the warranty of this pieces replaced expires with the warranty of the car. i'm afraid this problem is unsolvable for chrysler llc, and my car is an unsafe car. also, i want you to help me with the serial number of the components of my car: wind screen, battery, pistons,?. i found this links on internet with 2006 liberty jeep owners with the same unsolvable problem. http://jeephorizons.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=6836&sid=9f0a35885eee4cb496bf50e84284d105 http://jeephorizons.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=10382 http://jeephorizons.com/phpbb/?f=8. *tr

There is a slight fuel system leak that allows an air pocket to build in the fuel filter housing. when this air pocket gets drawn into the injector pump, the engine begins running badly, causing immediate loss of power. this has occurred multiple times, the first time the dealer could not duplicate the problem, so there was no point in returning to waste my time after that. i know how to temporarily fix the problem now that i have read so many other owners have experienced the same thing, as noted in the lost internet forum. the latest occurrence happened at 65 mph passing on the freeway, and i nearly caused an accident trying to maneuver off the road when i lost power. *tr

I have a 2006 jeep liberty limited with approximately 88,000 miles on it. recently i started to experience a problem where the fuel pump nozzle does not shut itself off automatically when my fuel tank is full. the first time it happened i thought this was an issue with the fuel pump at the station, but it has happened at multiple stations and every time i pump fuel. i've just been trying to pay close attention and stop the fuel flow before my tank gets full. this overflowing fuel is going to damage the paint on my vehicle and is a fire hazard at the gas station, not to mention the fact that the fuel has spewed onto my shoes and clothing on more than one occasion. the problem seems to be progressing now, as yesterday when i went to get fuel, the nozzle spewed immediately upon beginning to pump (and the tank was nearly empty as my fuel level indicator had just gone off). the only way i could get fuel into my tank was to manually control the flow with the nozzle so that it went into the tank very slowly. i have contacted my jeep dealership and have a service appointment later this week. i've read about a lot of others with this issue, and it sounds like they will need to replace my fuel tank.

*tr
