Vehicle stalled, engine shut off when backing out of driveway. the stall point of the transmission is exceed, making transition from reverse to drive or drive to reverse too much, causing a stall. also, idle in drive when stopped there are surges that cause a near stall. this is a safety issue, as it can happen when making 2-point or 3-point turns on a road with traffic.

This is a new liberty crd (diesel) with 610 miles that was accelerating from a border patrol checkpoint on i-8 east of san diego. while accelerating to ~65 the vehicle suddenly lost power in heavy freeway traffic and slowed to 35 mph even though the engine was running good. this sudden loss of power caused overtaking vehicles to swerve violently to avoid an accident including at least 2 panic stops. when the vehicle was safely on the shoulder (engine was idling fine) the car was shutdown and restarted which apparently recycled the computer and cleared the condition. vehicle has performed fine since that incident. *jb

Vehicles stalls after extended off period. vehicle shudders under normal driving conditions. chrysler has 2 tsbs to fix this- 21-016-05 and 21-009-06 which calls for replacing a trouble prone torque converter. chrysler has an updated torque converter to fix this problem yet will not take action to fix the vehicle even after numerous attempts since 2006 to get transmission fixed properly. i would like this looked into as myself and numerous other owners of the 2005-2006 jeep liberty with the diesel engine experience the same issue. the truck has stalled after starting on several occasions causing concern for action since i have had my pregnant wife witness this. please look into this.

After purchasing my diesel jeep i noticed a shuddering in the transmission at about 55-65 miles an hour. considerably worse with you decelerate after acceleration. in a construction hold on traffic my vehicle idled for about 10 minutes. when i was cleared to move forward i put the gear selector in drive. the jeep stalled. it took me a several attempts to restart the motor. i have done extensive research and have come up with one answer. air is in the fuel. i have taken it to a jeep dealer in ozark alabama and in dothan alabama. chrysler tells them that the air in my fuel system is ok. i demand to know what is a safe level of air allowed in the fuel system. no one has measured the amount of air in the fuel system. please tell me so i can have it measured because i have volumes. i am afraid it will stall out on me again. i have had a few close calls when the jeep hesitated and choked after a long light and a train crossing, *jb

On sep. the 23rd i was on i70e just out of effingham il. when my jeep liberty crd had a problem. there was a loud noise or thud then all of a sudden my speed went from about 65 mph down to 45 to 50 almost instantly. the white van that was behind me just tapped my rear bumper with no damage. the driver of the van went on around me as i went off of the hyw. to the side of the road. this problem cleared up in about 1 min. and the car the went on as it was ok. please reference odi number 10167608. this incident is the same as that report. also coming back to florissant on the 30th of sept 2006 the exact same thing happened. however my car was the only car in sight at the time. i have had three events with this type of failure and one of them resulted in the vehicle behind me just touching my car. the dealer here in florissant, mo. (marty cancilla dodge. has yet to figure out the problem. the chrysler district rep is going to be here on this thursdays to talk to me. as far as i am concerned this is a very dangerous problem, especially when traveling on the interstate a 60 to 70 mph. my jeep liberty has been in the dealers shop since tuesday of last week. i do hope they will fix this problem. i know form the jeep internet forum that this is a real problem with other liberty owners with the diesel crd. thank you for taking the time to read this. *jb

On the 5th. of september i was traveling home from dayton, oh on i70 and just as i was coming into indianapolis, in. my 2006 jeep liberty crd had a failure in its transmission that caused me to temporary lose control of the car. i was driving at the speed limit of 65 to 70 mph and all of a sudden there was a very loud klunk and the cars speed dropped from about 65 mph to 40 to 35 mph almost instantly and that's when i almost lost control for just about a second. i check and there was no cars either behind or to either side of me, which was lucky for me because if a car or semi would have been behind me i would not be here writing this. i pulled over to the right hand lane and started to leave the road for the shoulder. then all of a sudden my car started to drive normally again. i drove at a reduced speed for awhile and did notice that ther was a slight transmission shudder. this went away after a few minuetes and i was able to drive home to florissant missouri without futher trouble. i would like to say that i have checked with other's who own libertyi's and several of them have had the same problem. though their's was not as harrowing as mind. i took my jeep jiberty down to the dealer's the following day and left it there. that was two days ago and they are still working on it. i will be seeing the service rep. tomorrow and will finding out a little more about what happen. i do know that this it seems to be a ongoing problem with the 5 speed automatic traansmission with a transfer case. thank you for reading this. james e. friese, 115 st. benedict lane, florissant, missouri, 63033, pn. 314-837-3885. *nm

I own a 2006 jeep liberty. i have two issues. first one is the rear brakes. i replaced my brake pads at 34000 miles to find my rear outer brake calipers were not making contact with the rotor on either wheel. the svc mgr at grindstaff of elizabethton, tn told me my rotors were warped. there is no way this should happen at 34000 miles. i drive 95% four lane highway miles to work - no red lights at all. you can see by looking at the rotors the outer brake pads have never made contact with the rotors. when the other six pads were replaced the outer rear brake pads were not worn one bit and the outer brake contact surface of the rotor is not worn at all. the second issue is the brake actuator solenoid. my jeep will not come out of park when it gets extremely hot inside the vehicle without running the a/c about 10 mins. to cool the brake actuator assembly off a little. it sticks in park and will not come out. the same dealer told me they would not fix it because it's an intermittent problem even with it still under warranty (reported at 33000 miles). the service mgr at grindstaff in elizabethton, tn said they would not replace the defective parts because it was only an intermittent problem. i am very dissatisfied with the reliability of this vehicle. both problems i have are safety issues, factory design issues and dealer warranty compliance. *jb

On the 27th. of dec. 2007 i was traveling on i70e and as i was getting back on the hwy. from a rest stop just east of indianaplois, in. my 2006 jeep liberty crd had a failure in the transmission torque converter. i going about 60-65 mph when all of a sudden there was a lot of shuddering coming from the transmission and then a loud klunk and it cause a sudden drop in my speed from 65 to 30 mph. luckily no one was injured or hurt, however as in the past when this happen, its without warning causing a temporary loss of control. the transmission shudder happened several more times while ii was traveling. my dealer has know about this problem for over a year, and i have reported it to his service department more than 4 times and the problem has yet to be fixed. chrysler i believe knows that there is a problem with the jeep liberty crd's drive train but has yet to fix the problem. this will be my third complaint to nhtsa on this. the same problem happened again when i was returning home on the 3rd of jan. 2008. i will be seeing a rep on this coming monday and i do not expect to get any satisfaction from him on this safety matter. also my rear brakes are groaning every time that i stop and the dealer has already did a tsb on them once and the problem has returned. they told me that after the car has more than 12,000 miles they will do nothing. the car has just 16,500. *tr

2006 jeep liberty crd began stalling while on the interstate. driving started out normal, then suddenly while at a steady 65 mph the jeep began making a loud noise and not responding to acceleration. this went on and off intermittently for 5 miles to the next exit off the freeway, then it occurred intermittently on a highway then side streets until i made it home. from a dead stop it was extremely sluggish to get going at all. the symptoms point to torque converter issues, i had previously had the torque converter recall work done at the dealer in december 2006, apparently that didn't even last a year. it is unacceptable to stall on a freeway, let alone side roads. the dealer was unable to schedule a visit for well over a week, it goes in tomorrow. *tr

I am the owner of a 2006 jeep liberty. approximately 3 weeks after i purchased the new vehicle the transmission failed while i was driving on the highway. at that time the vehicle was towed to the service department where the transmission problem was said to be repaired. since that failure the vehicle was not running properly: the automatic transmission did not seem to be shifting smoothly. for the next 8 months i tried to have the service department repair the problem but they did not, the told me the problem was normal. in january 2007, i noticed the problem with the transmission was getting worse. i had to press the accelerator more than normal to get the car to shift after making a stop. the car would then jerk into gear while my foot was on the accelerator and i would speed up more than was safe. the final incident was when i was accelerating to get on the highway after a stop and the car jerked into gear along with making a clunking sound. because i was trying to accelerate, when the car jerked into gear i was sent off the side of the road. thank goodness there was no traffic or i would have been in a serious accident. i drove to the nearest service department where the problem was quickly diagnosed as a torque converter problem. the vehicle was in for repairs for 22 days before i got it back. parts were replaced in the transmission but only after approval from the manufacturer. the vehicle is running a little better but it is still not running like it was when i first bought the vehicle. this problem can be deadly and i no longer feel safe driving the vehicle. *nm

I own a 2006 jeep liberty crd (diesel) i have had problems with my jeep driving safe now since i bought this truck in jan 2006. my truck will shutter and almost stall on a daily basis in heavy traffic. and back in may 2006 my whole truck stopped dead on a local highway and went into a limp mode bringing me from a 45 mph speed to about 2-3 mph in a second. i have researched this and have found that the issue seems to be in a faulty torque converter in the transmission. i have meet several other people on the internet and in person that have all had the same issues. i have told my dealer about this with 0 outcome of a fix, there is a service bulletin for the transmission, but this has not helped either. i only hope that the issue does not happen while im on the interstate with my wife, with the sudden speed loss and lock up of my rear wheels i could only hope the cars behind me could stop in time, could a large semi though? there are many people with this issue and only doing a short internet search will prove this. just search for liberty crd lost torque converter and see what you find. i hope that jeep will have a better solution soon for this. *jb

I have a problem with my 2005 jeep liberty diesel failing to stop at the first stop sign in the morning. it has also not stopped after being parked for a few hours. the engine continues to push the vehicle forward into traffic or the intersection/cross walk. i have taken the vehicle to jeep but they cannot duplicate the problem. i have come very close to running over students on the campus of the university of alabama. i believe this problem is associated with jeep's torque converter problems. my wife has also experienced this problem so it has nothing to do with driving style. this problem will eventually kill or injure someone. *jb

I was doing a rapid deceleration for traffic slowing down suddenly on us 30 in york county, pa. i heard a loud clunk as i slowed down and the check engine light came on. as i tried to get back up to speed the jeep would not get out of 3rd gear. i kept to the right and got off at the first exit. after 5 minutes, i got back in the jeep, started it up, the check engine light still on. it shifted somewhat normally although it did shudder a bit. the following day, 9/10/06, the engine light was off and appears to be shifting ok now. i called the dealer who said that if it happens again i should bring it in. i am aware that there have been problems with this torque converter/transmission. i am concerned that it will happen when i have less flexibility to respond with a sudden power loss, especially in rainy/snowy weather, or a crowded road with only one lane. jeep liberty limited, 2006, 2800 miles. *jb

2006 jeep liberty crd with 2200 miles completely died on the on ramp to an interstate. after 7 days the dealer said that it was the flywheel in the torque converter. they say that they cant get parts to fix the problem. i had my two children in the car and had to wait for a tow truck to rescue us. i felt very lucky that i was not getting on the interstate the other way because there is no place to even try to pull over. *nm

Vehicle was driven up to red light. when light turned green, vehicle would not move leaving it in traffic unable to get out of the way. it was later determined by the dealer to be a failed torque converter. the part was replaced, however, other parts in engine and transmission that could have been damaged were not replaced. was told by dealer that redesigned torque converter is not yet available but coming. *nm

My 21 year old daughter was driving my 2006 liberty on the northern parkway in westbury, ny on january 2, 2008. the car was purchased in july 2006 and has approximately 15,500 miles on it. suddenly and without warning the wheels locked up ripping out the transfer case and dropping the drive shaft on the highway. the car behind her was damaged as it ran over the drive train components. the driver of the damaged car saw flames coming out from under the liberty and a cloud of black smoke. (probably from the gear oil). fortunately the liberty veered into the breakdown lane and not into another travel. no one was injured. the liberty was towed to westbury jeep. initially i met with the service manager and he indicated the repairs would be made under warranty. after 12 days he phone me and said ...either the car hit something or it was driven in 4wd low on the highway. neither of these occurred and jeep does not acknowledge a problem with vehicle and will not cover the repairs under warranty. i phoned chrysler and they won?t even send a rep to look at the vehicle. chrysler contacted the dealer and repeated what the dealer said. the chrysler service rep would not provide another contact saying she was trained to handle these situations. she also said there are no tsbs or recalls for my liberty which apply. i am frustrated and stonewalled by both the westbury jeep and chrysler. *tr

Clutch safety switch on 2006 jeep liberty (3.7 l gas engine) failed after 40 k. ironically, this requires replacement of the entire master cylinder (cost $375). would ignore problem, but this also deactivates the cruise control. silly design in that a simple switch failure requires hydraulic system work. *tr
