While putting gas in the tank i have to put it in very slow or it will shut off, then when the gas tank gets close to full gas will gush out. also some times i smell gas inside the vehicle.

When filling the vehicle up with gasoline, it spews out of the intake, draining all over the vehicle and the ground of the gas station. not only is this a waste of a resource and money but it is very dangerous as one spark could ignite the entire gas station killing innocent children and other citizens. this is a very common problem, there are many complaints all over this site and many others. this problem needs to be resolved before people are hurt.

When filling my jeep at multiple gas stations i have experienced overflow. it runs down the side of the car and all over the ground. it has happened numerous times at different stations. it seems dangerous and is obviously a waste of money.

I purchased a used 2008 jeep liberty in may of 2011. everything was fine until mid-december 2011 while i was filling up the gas tank. the pump shut off automatically but gas spouted out of the fill all over the pump handle and my hand. it's a considerable amount of gas spilling down the side of the vehicle and puddling on the ground. this now happens every time i fill the tank unless i try to cut it off early. this is a safety issue because of the danger of spilled gas and an major inconvenience. i see hundreds of similar complaints online so clearly this is not an isolated problem. i strongly urge nhtsa to investigate this issue and compel chrysler to correct the problem.

My 2008 jeep liberty has overflowed fuel when filling the tank 3 out of the 6 times i have filled it since purchased on 11/28. it has happened at several different gas stations. when the pump kicks off there is between 2-8 ounces of fuel that spit back around the handle with a fair amount of pressure. the area underneath the filler cap is soaked and a large puddle forms on the ground. i am concerned that at some point a fire may result. i also feel i must wash the car after every incident because i worry about the gas causing a paint defect.
11/01/201150000
When filling up at a gas station, the gas tank over flows before the pump stops. i originally thought it was a broken pump, however, i have now filled up over 4 times at 4 different gas stations and the problem continues to happen. this most recent time i have lost around 1/2 gallon of gas on the ground. i am also concerned with the effect of the gas on my paint/car body.

When filling gas tank it splashes out and get all over the jeep and the person filling the tank.

Every time i fill the gas tank, fuel gushes out of the filler neck onto the side of the vehicle and onto the ground. most times, the automatic fuel shutoff a the gas pump .... at various stations ... does not stop the flow. at other times, fuel gushes out even if the pump shuts off. i have tried slowing the rate fuel goes into the tank. sometimes this works. other times, it doesn't. the only way to avoid this potentially dangerous situation is to try to calculate how much fuel it will take to fill the vehicle and then stop the flow myself a couple of gallons early. there is a jeep tsb out on this problem. and there have been numerous complaints. the fule spillage issue is dangerous and should be a recall item.

A significant amount of gas spills out of the fuel tank opening after the automatic shut-off of the pumps gas flow. this occurs almost every time i fill up. i now have to only allow the tank to fill up 3/4 full to avoid spills.

A significant amount of gas spills out of the spout after the automatic shut-off of the pump's gas flow. gas spills down the vehicle, onto the ground and onto the person pumping gas.

After filling the vehicle with fuel a significant amount of gas spits back out of the filler tube. this is not from topping off as it happens when the pump handle automatically shuts off. also has happened at multiple gas stations. very hazardous and dangerous.

When filling the gas tank with gas it over fills everytime. the pump is stopped when full, but it will over fill enough to where it will come spraying out.

2008 jeep liberty limited 4x4, burps gasoline out of the gas tank every time i fill up with gas. i have filled up at multiple gas stations and every time the pump stops filling when full, but the jeep spits out gas after the pump stops. i can't believe there is no recall on this problem, since i see this as a very serious safety concern.
04/01/201132000
I just bought a used 2008 jeep liberty with 32,000 miles. this did not happen until after a few fill ups, but now gas spews out after filling the tank. i gets all over the car, the ground and my shoes.

I purchased my 2008 jeep liberty 4x4 in november 2010, and every single time i have filled up with gas, the fuel spills out of the tank just as the nozzel shuts off. this has happened at every gas station and every type of pump i have used. it is very frustrating because the gas runs down the side of the vehicle (near the exhaust), onto the ground, and often gets on me. i cannot imagine this is safe. not only is the spill harmful to the environment, it is also a fire hazzard. and, with fuel prices creeping up, i become more and more frustrated at this wasted fuel that i am paying for. i have contacted my dealership about the issue and they informed me that a similar issue was found in 2007-2008 jeep wranglers, but there was no recall. please make chrysler take responsibility for the faulty valve that is supposedly causing this issue - for the safety and piece of mind of all loyal jeep owners.

While filling 2008 jeep liberity, past 6 times, the gas tends to seep out. mileage when started ~43k miles. even when the rubber cover over the gas nozzle fits snug with the throat of the gas inlet, gas has leaked.

I have a 2008 jeep liberty that will not shut off the gas valve when i am pumping gas. i previously had a 2005 jeep liberty that had the same problem. i feel this is a safety issue since gas drips down the side of the car, tire and eventually on the person pumping gas creating a very large puddle of gas that requires cleanup from the gas attendant. this has happened with 2 different styles of jeeps at various gas stations.

The gas tank overflows every time fuel is pumped into the vehicle. this happens at all gas stations and regardless of how slowly the tank is filled. the problem started seemingly out of the blue with no accidents or damage to the car prior. gas sprays out of the filler tube as soon as the pump is removed, getting the person wet if they do not know to stand aside. gas also runs down the side of the vehicle. this is both a safety issue and an environmental / emissions issue that should be addressed by jeep. the interior smells of gas for a couple of hours after each overflow incident. we took it in for service and they said the entire gas tank would have to be replaced to fix the valve that has failed. we are out of warranty and feel this should be a safety recall and/or emissions warranty covered item. after looking online for solutions to the problem i have discovered that it is endemic to many jeep liberty and jeep wrangler vehicles made over the past several years. jeep has only offered to fix the problem for wranglers from 2007-08.

When putting fuel in the tank, it will burp out the fill line just as the pump is clicking off. cannot fill the tank without this happening and it occurs every time we fuel up. this problem started about 9 months ago and we have less than 40,000 miles on it now. no event led up to this starting, it just started when trying to fuel up. no matter how i try to fuel up, i get slosh back. this an environmental hazzard besides the filling stations do not like having gasoline spilled in their stations. it is a 2008 jeep liberty 4x4. i had the car at brown dodge, chrysler, jeep today and they checked out the gas tank and could not find anything wrong. they did a thorough check and could not detemine what was causing the problem. vin # 1j8gn28kx8w154153

Putting gasoline into my 2008 jeep liberty, the gas pump shuts off as expected however gasoline spews out of the jeep's filling system. tried different pumps same results, this occus without topping off the tank. this i a serious safety hazard with gas being spilled on my clothing, shoes, hands, vehicle and ground. once this happens the interior of the vehicle smells like gas causing headaches and breathing problems. i am just waiting for someone to cause a spark at the gas pump to ignite me. i have seen numerous complaints on various internet forums stating the same issues, this tells me that this is a real problem that jeep has not addressed.

Fuel spill during refueling. while refueling the car, when the tank was almost full, fuel started to spill resulting in spraying the car and the ground withing 3 feet radius with gas. this creates a risk of fire and health hazards by spilling gas onto skin. chrysler/jeep is aware of the problem and they have a tsb for this problem but refuse to make a recall. they are also aware of the problem on this particular vehicle and the vehicle was at the dealer service center 3 times for this particular problem but so far they have failed to fix the issue.

The fuel spills out of the tank when fueling the car resulting in gas on the vehicle and ground of the gas station. this has been going on for about two months. i have taken it to the dealer who said it needed a fuel vapor filter replaced. this did not fix the problem and now the dealer states i need a new gas tank. since this is a non-maintainable part i feel it is a mfr. defect and a very unsafe one at that.

While filling my jeep with gasoline the pump is never triggered to shutoff and it causes a lot of fuel spilling all over me, the car and the ground. prompting me to quickly clean myself and the car. this is an extremely dangerous situation not only due to its flammability but also its potential carcinogenic effects.

Every time i fill up my gas tank the nozzle does not trigger to release the shut off on the gas coming back out of the input which results in a lot of gas overflowing back onto my vehicle, the ground and my clothes. this happens even if i watch the amount of gallons being put into the tank and try and shut it off ahead of time.

We just bought a 2008 jeep liberty with 25000 miles on it and everytime we fill up it spews gas. i have tried putting the gas nozzle in farther, out half way, filling it up slowly but still everytime the nozzle clicks about a second or two later gas spews from the tank.

Jeep liberty 2008 gas gushing out every time after filling tank - according to dealer, roll-over valve is faulty inside gas tank so entire gas tank must be replaced (about $800+). this valve ensures that gas will not leak into vehicle in the event of a roll-over accident; also ensures gas won't shoot out of the gas tank after filling with fuel. gas erupts out of tank and back onto the face, body and feet of the consumer as well as all down the side of vehicle and onto the ground near gas pumps. very unsafe hazard. not a maintenance problem but rather a defective part inside the gas tank. should not be the consumer's responsibility to replace. vehicle is only 2 1/2 years old with 40,000 miles logged. this occurs each and every time the tank is filled whether or not it is on auto-fill or manually regulated. tricky work to manually stop gas flow before it gushes out. lodged complaint with jeep of america but was told only possible recourse was to pay for repair myself; submit claim to them after the fact, and they may or may not decide to assist me with costs (they won't call it reimbursement) for some or all of my expenses. they claimed no responsibility and complete lack of knowledge about the problem although this concern is posted all over the internet in various forums. thank you.

When refuling, vehicle gushes fuel back out at the consumer after pump clicks off. has done this many times since i bought it last month. it is dangerous and environmentally bad to spew fuel on consumer and on the ground, for fire and health reasons.
10/22/201026000
During regular refill the car spilled fuel, around 250ml of it. in last 2 month it is a regular occurrence and poses a safety hazard for the car occupants along with the gas station.

When filling up with gas the jeep spues gas back out forsefully and about 4 cups fly out all over some times the nossle clicks and some times it does not. i have had this jeep for over one year and this started happening for over a month now. 2008 jeep liberity 4x4. i called the dealer and they said no recall. this is very dangerious as the gas comes out fast and sprays. i dont think i should have to pay for this as it is a hazzard and not a maintaintance issue.

When filling the gastank as normal, gasoline overflows from the gastank. it spews a significant amount (approx 1/4 liter of gasoline).

Upon removal of fuel nozzle from the tank, after filling the tank, about two cups of fuel burp out of the tank onto the side of the vehicle and ground. happens at all stations, only way to avoid it is to not fill the tank or let the fuel nozzle sit for a minute or two before removal. i have returned vehicel to dealer with this complaint three times with no repair action taken by the dealer.

Tl*the contact owns a 2008 jeep liberty. while driving approximately 25 mph a chime sounded inside of the vehicle. the contact stated that the failure could possibly be related to the fuel indicator. whenever gasoline was dispensed into the fuel tank, the fuel sprayed out from the intake spout. the failure occurred on fifteen separate occasions. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer. the fuel tank required replacement. the failure mileage was 20,000.
