On july 3, 2007, daimlerchrysler corporation (dcc) submitted a defect information report to nhtsa describing a defect that could result in engine stall while driving in approximately 80,894 model year (my) 2007 jeep wrangler and dodge nitro vehicles manufactured between january 30, 2006 and january 22, 2007 (nhtsa recall 07v-291, dcc recall g25).according to dcc, the totally integrated power module (tipm) in these vehicles was programmed with software that may allow the engine to stall under certain conditions.dcc will reprogram the tipm in the recalled vehicles with revised software. odi opened pe07-027 on may 29, 2007, based on 53 complaints alleging engine stall and/or loss of electrical power in my 2007 jeep wrangler vehicles.odi was also monitoring similar complaints in my 2007 dodge nitro vehicles.dcc's analysis of complaints to dcc and nhtsa found that many described events with a momentary loss of electrical power inside the vehicle and a corresponding loss of engine power.many of the reports also indicated that the instrument cluster telltale lamps momentarily illuminated during the event. dcc's engineering analysis determined that the tipm could initiate an internal reset cycle lasting approximately 75 ms in response to error messages on the communication bus.the key on signal from the tipm to the powertrain control module (pcm) is lost during a tipm reset.if the pcm loses the key on signal for longer than 40 ms, it interprets it as the vehicle ignition being turned off and begins a power down routine.after the tipm reset, the key on signal is restored and the pcm powers back up.if the rotating components of the engine contain sufficient inertia, the vehicle may restart with no input from the operator as reported in some of the complaints.if the engine does not restart in this manner, it can be restarted by the operator.a revision to the tipm software on january 22, 2007 changed the tipm reset time to 17 ms, removing the potential for pcm power down and engine stall. odi has received 178 complaints potentially related to the alleged defect in my 2007 jeep wrangler vehicles and 52 complaints involving my 2007 dodge nitro vehicles.two of the nitro complaints allege that a crash resulted from an engine stall incident, one of which caused minor injuries to a passenger.as of june 1, 2007, dcc identified 151 wrangler complaints and 128 nitro complaints. this investigation has been closed with dcc's recall.

My 2007 jeep wrangler has had engine stall two times now at 50-60 mph. causing light failure, engine failure, no brakes or power steering. i have taken it to the dealership two times, after restarting the vehicle. the next time it happens, they said call a tow truck and have it towed to them. this started at approximately 26,000 miles and again at 30,000. both times nothing was found and the computer programs were current. *tr

Factory radio in 2007 jeep wrangler began overheating during the summer of 2009. overheating was causing extremely loud popping noise to be broadcast over all speakers in vehicle. vehicle was taken to dealer and inspected, radio was replaced. problem seemed to be fixed however; the weather temperature had cooled by that time so it was unclear as to whether the situation had been alleviated. in october 2009 the problem began occurring once again, this time when the defrost and heat was turned on. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection again. the dealer stated that the heat from the defrost and the heater was causing the radio to become extremely hot. the popping noise was due to this overheating process that was occurring. chrysler corporation was notified and a complaint was filed however they state that they have no solution at present and there have not been enough instances to warrant a recall. they have offered no remedies other than empty apologies. we are afraid to turn on the radio in the vehicle for fear that it will cause a fire. the dealer states that they cannot guarantee that this will not happen. furthermore the popping poses a hazard if it occurs while driving down the road as it is so sudden and so incredibly loud. *tr

Driving to work from hoboken, nj to montclair, nj on an 11 degree day. drove 40 minutes, some on highway. while on highway, the radio went off lights flashed on and off. approximately one mile from work, all lights flashed on, car began shaking, the power steering and brakes stopped working and then the car stalled. would not turn back on. called aaa. waited in cold for 1.5 hours. when tow truck arrived, car started again. drove to dealership in verona, nj. verona dealership hooked car up to computer and stated nothing was wrong with the car. returned to me with no repairs made. brought car to manhattan service center at 4, 256 miles for the problem. the service center found nothing wrong with the car, but performed a recall #g40. told me it should solve the problem that caused the power failure and stall. *tr

Driving to st. james, ny after a weekend in nj in snowy and cold conditions with new puppy. at 7:00am, about one hour into the drive, while on long island expressway, radio went off, lights flashed on and off, car began to shake and lose power. i pulled off the nearest exit and it stalled as i coasted into a gas station. after about 15 minutes, the car started again, and i tried to drive it to the huntington service center about 8 miles away. the car would not drive over 25 mph, and after about two miles began to shake uncontrollably. i pulled into a parking lot, put the car in neutral and tried revving the engine. nothing changed and the car stalled. i waited in the cold and snow for aaa to tow me to the huntington service center. service center communicated to me that the car had nothing wrong with it based on the computer check. that a technician would take it for a test drive with me. the problem didn?t happen on the test drive. upon return to the service center, i insisted that they continue to search for the problem on the grounds that my car had to be towed in after losing control on the highway. service manager refused. i asked him to explain chrysler?s responsibility in the matter and he said in an unkind tone that i could go to arbitration but the problem would have to occur in front of the arbitrator, so it probably wouldn?t work in my favor. returned to service center at 29,308 miles because the dashboard lights were going on and off while i was driving. insisted that they find out what was wrong with the car and fix it. service advisor told me that they would call the chrysler tech support team to help with solving the problem. they stated that the problems caused on march 3 and march 4 were because the battery was low and the esp was activating prematurely. they stated low battery was causing the power failure and the esp was causing the shaking of the car. service center replaced the battery and fix the module that controlled esp. *tr

Driving to work on a cold snowy day from huntington, ny to st. james, ny. after 30 minutes of driving the lights flashed on, car seemed to have less pick up, radio went off. minutes later, the car began to shake and gas gave it no power. lost power in steering and brakes as well. drifted into a snowbank on the side of edgewood ave. in smithtown, ny next to a busy school driveway. would not restart. when tow truck arrived still would not start. after three days, dealership stated that they didn't know what was wrong with the car, but based on the information available, they would replace the wireless control module. part was on backorder for 2+ weeks. *tr

I currently own a 2007 jeep wrangler .i have experienced a stalling problem with vehicle 5 time in the last 2 months. 4 of the 5 time i was traveling at night at speeds of 50 to 65 mph on an interstate. the reason i am writing this complaint is i almost rear ended a tractor trailer running at a slower speed after the stall turned of the light and gave me no brake power. this is very dangerous almost costing me my life. i am taking it to the dealer to have a recall notice done on 03/21/08. this problem seems to be coming quite common on these jeeps, i hope a death does not happen before they fix the defect. *tr

My car wont start. on feb 5th, odi 10217364, i had this same issue and i brought the car to the dealership and they replaced the tim module. on feb. 16th i tried to start the car 4 times - it would turn on for a second then all lights on the dash would come on and the car would die. on the 5th and 6th try it wouldn't turn on at all, just the lights on the dash would come on. it was after 4pm so dealership closed. on feb. 16th i tired the car again, it turned on with the first try so i moved it from the garage to a spot outside. on monday, feb 17th i was going to drive it to the dealership to have them look at it but again it would not start. just like on saturday, after 4 attempts it wouldn't turn on at all. had it towed to the dealership again. this is the 5th time that the car has gone into the dealership for stalling/not starting and the 8th time that this stalling/not starting problem has occurred. *tr

Vehicle experienced full shutdown again, this time on the interstate at interstate speed. the recall did not cover my build date and this is the third time i have experienced the vehicle turning itself off, and then back on a few seconds later. the ones that were covered by the recall, seem to have the same issue still. all the dealer can do is document that i brought the vehicle in and that they cannot replicate the problem. this vehicle is likely to get someone killed!*cn

When merging into traffic getting on the freeway, my engine does not respond to throttle input as i try to accelerate. the tachometer and speedometer seem to lock up as the vehicle quits responding to driver commands. this problem has happened twice in the first 1000 miles since being purchased. the dealer cannot seem to duplicate this discrepancy. this vehicle is a 2007 jeep wrangler 2 dr 4x4. *jb

Since i've purchased the vehicle in march it has at least had approximately 100 times of excessive crank time. i fear it may be destroying the engine or ? i've also had one dealer service manager call me 'crazy' and reported that it was not happening because they couldn't duplicate the issue. after his rude and unprofessional remark, i went to another dealer ship who treated me with respect, but again, they couldn't duplicate the excessive crank. finally on a second visit, they reported they were able to duplicate the issue. problem is; they want me to wait and have star techs., try to figure it out. i am upset that they won't just trade the jeep! i am paying big money for a piece of... (you know what!) if they refuse to trade, i want my money back. a new car should not be having these issues!! it has died on me but only once and i was stopped at an intersection. i had to restart the vehicle. thank god they were able to figure that one out!!

Ref: wrangler stalling problem (pe07027). jeep wrangler 2dr 4wd 2007 auto trans. vehicle appears to have a transient electronics fault in hot weather. when the fault occurs, all the warning lights on the dashboard flash for about a second (similar to at engine start). on the first occurrence, there was a brief loss of engine power and the brakes may have applied momentarily, as if the stability control system had activated. all dashboard lights flashed as if at startup. cd player stopped. this was at 25mph on a flat residential street, about 5 minutes after the vehicle had been started after soaking in hot sun on a 90f+ day. the vehicle returned to normal operation within one second. service advisor at dealership (boardwalk auto, redwood city, ca) advised me to call back if it happened again. the second occurrence was climbing a moderate hill in heavy traffic (california rt 92 between i-280 and skyline blvd, a well known heavily traveled hill). the engine rpms suddenly increased from about 1,500 to about 3,000 rpm as the transmission downshifted unexpectedly. all dashboard lights flashed on, then reset to normal. again, this happened on an unusually hot day after the vehicle had spent most of the day parked in sunlight. service advisor at dealership (boardwalk auto, redwood city, ca) advised me to call back if it happened a third time. in all cases, the engine temperature was normal. after reading about the wrangler stalling problem, i wanted to put this on the record, to provide some additional information. *tr

2007 jeep wrangler 2 door. stalls. loses all engine and electrical power. has happened on five occasions. on the last occasion i was in a major intersection and was almost broadsided when the light changed and i was caught in the oncoming flow of traffic. brandon, florida dealership denies that such an occurrence is possible or repairable because they are unable to replicate the problem. vehicle has been taken to the dealership three times for this problem to no avail.

I had just exited the freeway after driving about 28 miles and while getting of the ramp into oncoming traffic i had a cpmplete loss of power lasting a few minutes. nothing worked, brakes and steering included. i managed to roll off the road without getting hit and sat for a few minutes and my jeep restarted like nothing ever happened. i took it to the dealer the next day along with a print out of this investigation. no miles were put on my jeep but they said they couldn't re-create the incident and stated they reset a power steering chip that the manufaturer recommended. the stall has not reoccured in three weeks but tonight while driving home my stability controll light came on and wont shut off. i wasn't even moving when it came on i was at a light. i have also had episodes of my stability controll coming on and locking my braked on dry roads. again the dealer found nothing wrong.

After service at the dealership, while traveling home, the vehicle stalled twice at highway speed (55 mph). when the vehicle (2007 jeep wrangler) stalled i lost all power including electrictronics and lights. this is the first time this has happened but i feel this is very dangerous. the dealership says to bring it in if this happens again. i noticed on your website this is an ongoing problem so i wanted to report it. there was no accident involved but a couple of close calls.

Nothing led to the failure other than normal driving. i was accelerating up an on ramp to interstate 75 when the 2007 jeep wrangler that i was driving, stalled. all power appeared to be gone, but within 2-3 seconds, the vehicle restarted and i continued without further incident. january 2007. similarly, while parked at a traffic light, the vehicle stalled, but did not restart. may, 2007. both stalls were not preceeded by any notice, no winddown, no dieseling, nothing. i have not as yet taken the vehicle to the dealer for this, as i am confident with the infrequency, there is no way they can diagnose.

Vehicle was set on cruise at 45mph and suddenly suffered a complete power loss and stalled. no equipment was functional in the vehicle, including gauges, headlights, radio, etc. as the automatic transmission was still in drive, the vehicle decelerated very suddenly until power was restored approximately 3-4 seconds later, at which point the vehicle restarted itself. power steering and power brakes were also affected during this power loss, and neither was functional. battery cables do not appear loose and there is no other indication of loose wiring. *tr

As i was driving at 50 mph on a level road; the engine and electrical system on my 2007 jeep wrangler completely failed. just as quickly as the engine/electrical cut out (within 1-2 seconds) all the dash board lights illuminated and the engine restarted on its own. what made this event a danger to me and possibly others on the road is when the engine died i also lost power steering. this causing me to move into oncoming traffic (i was rounding a sweeping corner at the time). when the engine restarted it caused the power steering to immediately come back which in turn caused a quick jerk back into my lane of travel. this was an extremely dangerous maneuver given the type of vehicle this is. this seems to be an ongoing issue with many 2007 jeep wranglers. *jb

With less than 5000 miles on my 2007 jeep wrangler jk x, i have already had 2 occurrences where the jeep would stall under normal driving conditions. flat road driving, normal highway speeds (50-65), it will lose power to the motor, giving a mild buck, then radio cuts out, all dashboard lights come on, and about a second later, all go out, and driving resumes as normal. nearly got rear-ended by an 18-wheeler due to power loss. both times were under similar circumstances. *jb
03/18/2007411/13/2006
On 4 different occasions now the jeep has completely shut down under normal driving conditions in moving traffic. there are no symptoms that lead up to the incidents. at various speeds and at various times all of the lights on the dashboard will come on for a second, then they all go off, the radio shuts off, and the engine dies as if the ignition has been turned off. the engine and lights will stay off for an average of a 4 to 6 seconds and the vehicle will start back up as if nothing happened. this is a huge safety concern in the fact that during this time period all vehicle control is lost. this has happened at highway speeds. i have taken the jeep to the dealership more than once regarding this problem. they report that they cannot duplicate the issue, and pretty much act as if it is a non-issue since they can't reproduce the problem.*ak

I was leaving work on 3/15/07 and going down the interstate about 65 mph in the rain when the engine shut off. i was doing nothing but driving when the engine just shut off the gauges went nuts. i drive a 2007 jeep wrangler and it has only 2000 miles on it. i could have been hurt or even killed by this event. today on my way back to work the jeep was shaking badly lots of vibration at hiway speeds. once again i just bought it back in december and now it shuts off and is one big vibrator going down the highway. i will be taking the jeep back to the dealership and have it checked out. i will tell you right now they will find nothing wrong with it since there are no check engine lights on or any other symptons. i would like this investagated. i hope that there will be a recall before too many people have to die from this. but going down the highway at high sppeds and your engine shutting off and haveing no control over your vehicle is a perfect recipe for a serious accident.

I have a wrangler built in 9/06 and purchased in 11/06. it has a stalling issue while driving, it has had all the recalls and flashes done to the computer as well as the dealership replacing the ignition switch stating that was the cause of the stalling. i have also filed 2 other complaints with this org. on this..#10192506 on 6/5 and #10204419 on 9/28. while driving tonight at a steady 70 mph. the engine cut out, stalled then re-started ! luckily my pregnant wife was not in the car. i have had this happen before numerous times. the vehicle went in for the last recall on this, and this is the third time it has stalled since the fix and this is the second time it has happened at night on the highway...i think anyone would believe a vehicle stalling and losing lights at night doing @70mph is very dangerous. all i want is a vehicle that i can depend on, i will state again i purchased this vehicle brand new and the engine is still stalling while driving, and this is the 3rd time since the manufactures recall computer flash fix . i would appreciate some help! *tr
