In its july 29, 2011 response to odi's may 27, 2011 information request letter, chrysler provided 153 my 2007-2008 owner reports, additional to the 28 odi vehicle owner questionnaires (voqs), which related to the illumination of the air bag light (abl) due to a faulty clockspring (cs) wiring circuit.the right hand drive (rhd) vehicles, which were first produced in my 2008 and account for only 1% of vehicle production, accounted for 82 of these 181 reports (45%).the my2007 left hand drive (lhd) vehicle accounted for 61 of the remaining 92 lhd reports and exhibited a higher complaint rate than the my 2008 lhd vehicles.odi did not identify any incidents of crashes/injuries attributable to the cs circuit failure.since may 27, 2011, odi has received another 32 consumer complaints bringing the total to 213 reports at this closing.in addition, and for comparative purposes, chrysler provided another 42 owner reports it received on the my2006 and my2009-2010 wrangler vehicles; these populations showed a lower incident rate than the subject vehicles, especially in comparison to the rhd subject vehicles. chrysler's investigation showed that the higher rate of rhd wrangler cs failures were due to a more severe duty cycle for these vehicles which are primarily used by us postal workers/mail carriers delivering mail in rural regions.chrysler concluded the unique vehicle usage, much of which occurs with the driver's window open and under dusty environmental conditions, is the cause of premature cs failure.chrysler's analysis also indicated that the somewhat elevated my2007 lhd rate, which showed a declining failure trend, was the result of start-up production/assembly issues that occurred with the introduction of a new design cs.the new design cs incorporated both dual airbag inflator circuitry and a steering wheel angle sensor (for the electronic stability control system).on november 1, 2011, chrysler submitted a defect notice indicating it will conduct a recall of all my 2008-2012 rhd wrangler vehicles (11v528).the estimated 5,334 rhd wrangler vehicles include the 2,297 my 2008 rhd wrangler vehicles, which were the subject of this investigation, plus an additional 3,037 my 2009-2012 rhd wrangler vehicles that chrysler determined potentially have a similar cs concern as the my 2008 rhd vehicles.chrysler intends to replace the existing cs with a yet-to-be-produced improved cs assembly, or an improved steering housing assembly that is less susceptible to dusty environments.owner notice is scheduled to begin in november, 2011.chrysler also informed odi that it intends to initiate a consumer satisfaction campaign for my2007 lhd wrangler which will extend the cs warranty coverage for 10 years or 150,000 miles.accordingly the investigation is closed.

My airbag warning light came on while driving which indicated that the airbag would not work in the event of a crash. light continued to go on and off for several days at random. dealer told me the clock spring was likely faulty and wanted nearly $1,000 to fix it. i read online forums where the right-hand drive jeeps had a recall on the clock spring for this very issue. also read multiple forums with hundreds of complaints that the issue is prevalent on left hand drive jeeps. i removed my clock spring and tested it and found one circuit was shorting out due to wear on the ribbon wire where the ribbon contacts the plastic housing. this appears to be a faulty clock spring design and is very dangerous as it may prevent the airbag from deploying in a crash and the only repair/replacement option is to put a new clock spring back in that has the same design flaw as the original. i replaced my clock spring with a new oem unit but based on the historical data, the replacement clock spring is not likely to last or be reliable.

While operating my 2008 jeep wrangler the airbag light illuminated on the dash with a notification noise every few minutes and has continued since. the dash light does not shut off at this time, stays illuminated and the notification noise approx every minute. after further research this is the same part number that has been recalled on the 2007 models as well as the 2008 right hand side. *tr

Air bag light stays on. cruise control no longer works, horn doesn't work and air bags don't work. dealership says it's a bad clock spring but it wasn't covered under my extended warranty. had to buy and replace component myself. should be recalled for faulty clock spring as many 07-08 jeep jk's are having this problem. it is unsafe to have no airbags and no horn. *tr

While driving on the freeway, the windshield fluid sprays and the wipers go on at slow speed. can't turn wipers or mister off and have to pull over with zero viability. second time this happened, i lost acceleration pedal and jeep stalls and starts while all this is going on. took keys out of ignition and disconnected negative batter but everything still on. pulled fuses for wipers and fluid to stop that. had to pop clutch to stall out the jeep. very dangerous to have happen while in the carpool lane. also to find out that the airbags don't work due to a bad clock spring. *tr

2008 jeep wrangler with 20000 miles. clock spring failed leaving me with a dinging every time i turn the steering wheel. 2007 wranglers have an extended warranty but 2008s do not. sounds like jeep is admitting something is wrong but limiting their damage monetarily by limiting the affected years. anything that has a chance that of making airbags not deploy, which i'm sure there is a law that says vehicles need airbags, not, have airbags that are made with parts that make the airbag not work after 20000 miles. what next? seatbelts that unhook over a certain speed? *tr

Air bag warning light on dash board started lighting up intermittently and chime going off about every 2 or 3 minutes. checking with a mech. found out it was clock spring in steering wheel. pulled fuse to stop noise and light. jeep said too bad, out of warranty. *tr

My 2008 jeep wrangler airbag light turned on an wouldn't turn off. we took it to the local dealer and they just told us that they can't find anything wrong on the scan but the only way to turn off the sensor is to replace the airbag at $750.00. really? nothing wrong but it will cost $750.00 plus labor to turn off the sensor light? does this mean the airbag works or not? seems many are having this problem and is jeep waiting for an airbag not to deploy and have someone killed before the recall starts? any advice is helpful!

Tl-the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler 4x4. while driving approximately 40 mph, the contact noticed that the air bag warning indicator was illuminated intermittently. in addition, whenever making a turn a chime would sound inside of the vehicle. the failure progressed and became a constant occurrence. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who replaced the driver's side air bag clock spring assembly. there was a recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number was 11v528000 (air bags: frontal); however the vin was ineligible under the recall. the manufacturer was notified of the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 66,000. kmj

On the 2008 jeep wrangler (lhd) dashboard, the airbag warning light flashes on every other minute with a chime, an indication that there is something malfunctioning or interfering with the vehicle's airbags.this has been a recurring issue and concern for many 2008 jeep wrangler (lhd) owners, including myself, and has been shown time and time again to be caused by a faulty clockspring within the vehicle's steering wheel. this faulty clockspring is the culprit for potential airbag failure in the 2008 jeep wrangler (lhd) during an accident or premature deployment when simply driving around. daimler chrysler has refused to address the safety concern of their faulty clockspring that can cause failure of the vehicle's airbags from properly deploying.

Clockspring came apart inside steering column. lost ability to steer, air bag shut off, use horn, and cruise control. warranty did not cover.

The airbag light stays on which indicates that the airbag may not deploy. this is a safety issue big time!!!
10/26/201187000
The airbag light stays on 99% of the time. i have the same problem as described in the nhtsa action # pe11019. make: jeep model: wrangler model year: 2008 manufacturer: chrysler group llcmfr's report date: nov 01, 2011 nhtsa campaign id number: 11v528000 nhtsa action number: pe11019 component: air bags:frontal summary: chrysler is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 right hand drive (rhd) jeep wrangler vehicles manufactured from february 1, 2007, through october 10, 2011. some vehicles may be equipped with driver's airbag clockspring assemblies that could experience a compromised airbag circuit resulting in an airbag lamp illumination, which indicates that the airbag may not deploy. consequence: a broken electrical circuit in the airbag clockspring wiring assembly can lead to non-deployment of the driver frontal airbag and will not be able to properly protect the driver in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injuries. remedy: chrysler will notify owners and remedy the vehicles as necessary free of charge. chrysler will mail to owners an interim notification during december 2011. owners may contact chrysler at 1-800-853-1403. notes: chrysler's recall number is l37. owners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov . my vehicle is a left hand drive not a right hand drive as covered by the recall. i called the chrysler help line and they were of no help. this is a safety issue that has been acknowleded by chysler and they need to recall my vehicle also.

I contacted jeep constomer assistance center after i was researching this web site and saw recall #l37. nhtsa action # pe11019. i own a right hand drive jeep and this recall very specificly said 2008-2012 right hand drive jeeps were having problems with the clock spring. i contacted jeep several times, i went ahead and had this repair done on my own in fear of being in an accident and not having an air bag to deploy if needed, (i'm on the highway 5-6 hours per day) also my horn would not blow, it is needed at times to alert other drivers etc.. dec. 15th i called and requested to be reimbursed and they informed me that this recall was very vin specific, and mine was not included, i let them know i had the same problem. this really troubled me so i contacted jeep again by email, they informed me again that my jeep was not included in the vin specific recall. what can i do to be treated fairly and get reimbursed for a recall that should have been on my vehicle as well??? i was having the exact same issues as the ones that were recalled, and this could have caused serious safety problems for me as well as the jeeps that were so vin specific. there should not be a problem to having a vehicle recalled if it could hinder the air bag from deploying and risking the lives of anyone.

My 2008 jeep wrangler started having an airbag warning light come on occaisionally, over the last month it has gotten more frequent. i have done a bunch of research on the problem and found that it appears to be a common problem with chrylser products. the issue is a defective clockspring, about a $500 fix through the dealer. there is a current recall for right hand drive jeeps for the same problem but chrysler will not honor that for the left hand drive jeeps. i have tried talking to my dealer, and chrysler direct with no luck. i am confused as to how they can get away with refusing to fix a known safety problem, not to mention morally. i know they are a corporation and morals are not high on their priorities, however selling more of their product should be. i love my jeep, and planned on giving this one to my son in a few years when he is old enough to drive and buying a new one for myself. not so sure i want to buy another vehicle from a manufacture who wont stand behind a safety issue. if this was an issue over somthing like a radio or other luxury i would have no issue. but that is not the case. there is a common safety issue and they refuse to address the issue and make it right. i have always driven toyota's and never had any issues with them standing behind their products. perhaps chrysler could use to look at other companies and take a bit of ethical advise from them.

At first the windshield wipers would intermittently turn on, then the horn would not work and then the airbag light came on and would only turn off with the key in the off position. vehicle was taken to the dealership and was told it was the clockspring which is not covered under the bumper to bumper warranty......odom reading approx 32,000.

On two separate occasions my unmodified 2008 jeep wrangler x has given me an audible ding warning and the airbag warning light came on and stayed on while stuck in very slow moving highway traffic (approximately 0-10 mph). both times it was approximately 85-90 degrees f outside and the air conditioning was off. the second time this happened the hot oil warning recall fix had already been performed but i did not receive that warning nor did the temperature gauge rise more than half the width of the needle. on the second occasion the ding and airbag warning light came on repeatedly over a period of a half an hour each time traffic slowed down.

Clockspring in steering column is of poor design, less than 50 thousand miles on vehicle. airbag light is constantly going on and off when you turn the steering wheel. airbags may or may not deploy in an accident depending on if you are going straight or turning. dealer says they have had several peole come in with same issue and thet the clockspring controls the airbags but they are unwiling to cover it as warranty has expired. how many people are going to pay the 500 dollars to get the part replaced and how many people are just going to risk it?
