Defect SummaryKaufman trailers (kaufman) is recalling certain model year 2011 flatbed trailers equipped with 10,000 lb. electric oil bath axles. the wheel end caps on the oil bath axles can leak due to a cracked cap or a damaged o-ring.
Consequence SummaryThe oil may leak out of the wheel end caps and if the condition is not corrected, the loss of oil could result in unexpected wheel bearing failure which may increase the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryKaufman will notify owners and will replace the affected wheel end caps and o-rings free of charge. the recall is expected to begin on september 5, 2012. owners may contact kaufman trailers at 1-866-444-8971.

 On june 14, 2012 the office of defects investigation (odi) opened a preliminary evaluation (pe12-014) to assess the risks associated with wheel-end failures causing wheel separation on certain model year (my) 2011 kaufman flatbed trailers.following discussions with odi concerning manufacturer records, consumer complaints, interviews, and the risk to the public resulting from a wheel separation event, kaufman decided to submit recall notice 12v-410 on the subject trailers.this recall decision was made prior to submitting its response to odi's information request letter, and odi believes it has sufficient information to close its investigation.therefore odi relieved kaufman of its requirement to submit a response.kaufman's recall actions address the issues raised by this investigation and as a result this investigation is closed.

 Odi was contacted by a fleet which operates two of the subject trailerswithin the first year of service the fleet had experienced multiple wheel-end failures on both trailers.failures range form broken wheel studs to wheel-off events.both trailers were used to haul identical backhoes, just as the other trailers used by the fleet do.odi visited the fleet and verified that the trailer gross and axle weights were within specified limits.odi has opened this investigation to further evaluate the cause of these wheel-end failures, assess the scope, frequency, and safety consequences of the alleged defect.voq: 10407241
