ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - ENGINE

Camshaft chain tensioner failed, resulting in engine noise and cam chain wear. potential for premature cam chain failure and loss of rider control. service bulletin issued in england to replace tensioner on zx600g1 and early g2 models with a retro fitted f model tensioner. rick.roddewig@kmc-usa.com knows of problem, but kawasaki usa has not issued a recall or service bulletin. kawasaki uk recommends replacing part 12048-1159 (worm drive) with part 12048-1143 (ratchet type) on engines prior to zx600ge053530. i have come across at least two other zx600g1's with excess cam chain noise. note: suzuki had a similar tensioner problem and issued a full recall. i am replacing this part at my own expense, but other owners have no official way of knowing there is a fixable problem. i have researched this problem and have more info. e-mail me. *ak

Rured in nomad motorcycles predominately, but vulcan classics as well. kaw has been repairing them on a one by one basis, but the failures occur at around 20,000 miles. many bikes are resold two or three times in that period, and i am concerned that kaw istrying to sweep the bulk of long term liability into the unsuspecting future recipients. *ak

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE - STORAGE - TANK ASSEMBLY
05/01/1999
Gas tank design allows water to settle in the lower portions of the tank below the fuel pick-up (approximately .2gallons). this may cause thetank to rust through and produce rust deposits which can be pulled through the carburators and cause overflow even engune seizures
FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER - STORAGE - TANK ASSEMBLY

Kawasaki had rebuilt my motorcycle, but had dented the tank they replaced it. but four months later gas leaks out of the rear right vent hose which dripped on to the exhaust pipe and ignited. fire was put out with little damage, the vent line is cracked inside the new tank causing gas to leak in to the vent line and out the drain hose on to the exhaust pipe. kawasaki denies any part of this type of failure being their fault.*ak
OTHER

Kick stand of motorcycle is not locking, causing tip overs on slightest non-level ground.*ak
POWER TRAIN - MANUAL TRANSMISSION
07/27/2001105/01/1999
Oil pump on early kawasaki nomads were made of plastic. there have been several posts on the internet about failures of this gear. i was told by my dealer that kawasaki motor corp. usa had sent a notice to dealers that they were to repair any failures of this gear, regardless of warranty or milage. since kawasaki knew of this problem and did not notify owners, i was stranded 500 miles from home. this in my opinion is unacceptable. an oil pump failure could have catastrophic consequences, should the engine lock up at 75 mph.*ak
