Defect SummaryVehicle description: heavy duty trucks equipped with meritor air brake automatic slack adjusters. some of the automatic slack adjusters had insufficient torque applied to the guide pawl cap screw.
Consequence SummaryWithout sufficient torque on the guide pawl cap screw, the brakes could gradually lose adjustment, increasing the vehicle stopping distance.
Corrective SummaryDealers will check the torque on the automatic slack adjuster guide pawl. if there is no torque, the brakes will be adjusted and the guide pawl will be tightened to 15-20 ft. lbs.

Defect SummaryVehicle description: heavy duty trucks equipped with 15 (widths: 4 and 5) air-actuated q-plus cam brake equipped with federal mogul friction products 3030-197 brake lining (meritor r201) brake linings and actuated with type 20 air chambers x 5.5 slack adjusters. the affected brakes were installed predominantly in heavy truck front axle assemblies. these assemblies do not fully satisfy the test performance requirements of fmvss no. 121, air brake systems.
Consequence SummaryThis condition could cause decreased braking effort.
Corrective SummaryThe brake lining will be replaced with upgraded brake linings.

 The companies involved in this matter are:skf (hub mfr), arvinmeritor (front axle mfr), and paccar, the corporate headquarters for kenworth and peterbilt, ( manufacturers of class viii tractor-trailers).skf identified manufacturing defects for specific build dates on front axle hub and bearings (wheel bearings) supplied to arvin meritor.as a result, arvinmeritor notified paccar who in turn notified their truck divisions of the defective units.as a result, 220 trucks are being recalled by paccar for defective front axle wheel bearings which may fail in such a way that a wheel separation or wheel bearing fire occurs.see attached summary report and defect reports for additional details.

 We are running approximately 40 trucks. all 97 through 2000 models of various makes. we have had numerous front wheel bearing failures for no apparent reason. they have been limited to paccar products, both peterbilt and kenworth. we have had several wheels run off of the truck going down the road. this is a very serious situation. we need the factory to get involved. we do not want to be responsible for injuring someone or worse. *ak
