| Defect Summary | Kia is recalling certain model year 2011 sorento 2wd vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions and 2.4l engines manufactured from the start of production through may 22, 2010. the intermediate shaft may suffer from noise and excessive wear due to a misalignment of the intermediate shaft with the right side output gear. continuing to drive the vehicle in this condition leads to the development of a whirring/whining noise and can eventually cause damage to the automatic transmission. | |||||||||||||||

| Reversed car from my driveway. felt as if i had crashed into something (heard loud grinding sound). put the car into drive and came to stop. upon pressing the brakes, felt as if the abs had engaged and gripped all four wheels. heard loud grinding sound and car jolted (as brakes were pressed). i had my five year old and three old sons with me; they screamed from the jolt. i slowly released the breaks and applied the breaks again, and same thing occured only with less force. turned off the car and called for towing. also, a howling whining noise is heard inside the car. the dealership had it for two weeks, and under the guidance of the field engineer they replaced the transfer case. the howling/whining noise continues. the dealership really tried to resolve the issue. the manager herself test drove the car and also heard the whining/howling sound. i did contact the manufacturer, but frankly felt dissapointed. i had asked if anyone has called in with similar complaints and was not given an answer. i feel unsafe and very anxious about driving the car. they dealership stated the breaks were fine, and that no error code was detected. i was not given a definitive answer as to what caused the breaks to behave this way or what is the howling noise that is occuring. this is the third major issue we had with this car. i have an awd vehicle and the current recall only covers the 2wd issue (that also has this howling sound). i have read numerous other complaints in which other 2011 awd sorentos are having similar issues. please investigate; someone could be seriously hurt or worse. | |||

| Attempted to park car while waiting for a relative to get off work. car would not shift to reverse or park- no further than neutral. was able to put car in neutral and brake to stop car. after dropping relative off at home (had to stop car in same manner as above), had to stop in a near empty parking lot, as i still was unable to put the vehicle in reverse or park. contacted kia dealership by phone and was told by representative to pump the break several times in order to shift the car to neutral/park. did not work. was told by rep that the braking solenoid ? (spelling?) has malfunctioned and that i should use something like a small screwdriver to push down a button in a small box at the top right of the shifter. further stated that this would release the break so that the car could be put in park. was told that car would now be unable to be taken out of park unless the same process was repeated. i've owned this vehicle just over 3 months. certified per-owed. less than 34000 miles. will attempt to take to dealership for repair. unaware if service center will repair on saturday. this is the second time this has happened, but it was quickly remedied when i cut the car off and turned it back on while depressing the brake. thought it was a fluke until today. should have kept my 2006. this is my 3rd kia. 1st vehicle with an issue like this. *tr | |||

| This is my wife's vehicle, but given the issue she is afraid to drive it..... driving up hill with my foot on the gas pedal at 50 mph. my vehicle lost power ( as if i slammed on the brake ) my body went forward and was stopped by the seatbelt. my head whipped downward. then the vehicle surged forward. my head and body slapped back into the seat. it was so abrupt and violently. it will scare you to death. this has happened to many times over the last year to count. i have tried to document the events in a journal because the dealer has been able to duplicate it only once. some days it can happen up to 3 times a day for weeks on end. some times i can duplicate it driving up hill and sometimes nothing. the worst times are when merging into traffic or when someone is following to close behind me. my fear is that i will hurt another motorist or a passenger in my vehicle. a term called limp mode has been said to me. where the transmission shifts to a hi gear to protect it from damage. my vehicle still does this at least once every other day. i have been to the dealer 14 times. the tranny was replaced a year ago and a backfire code was found recently. a computer software update that didn't help was the last thing done in over a year, unless you count paying for rental vehicles doing something. there is also a suspension/steering issue. a hard pulling left/right and bump steer. the vehicle will pull the steering wheel out of your hand in turns and veers as it hits bumps. *tr | |||

| Vehicle stuck in drive when i was pulling into a parking place. i was able to brake but engine kept running. after several tries, i managed to force it into neutral and the curb maintained my car stationary since i was unable to put it in park. because i was unable to put my car in park, it idled in neutral until the tow truck arrived (20 min later) by which time it had begun to overheat. the incline light was on, but i was not on an incline. the traction light was on and i have no clue why since the car was not in motion. i also called the kia dealer and spoke with someone in the maintenance dept. who directed me to repeatedly pump on my brakes and at the same time to keep turning my steering wheel back and forth. after several tries, i was finally able to get it into park but the traction light and the incline lights remained on and the car was overheating. i encountered another incident a couple of months ago, when i was on a road trip. at that time the vehicle's mileage was about 35,000. i was going 70 mph on hwy 281 s heading to san antonio when my engine began to lose power and the engine light came on. luckily, i was able to make it to a kia dealership in the area. they worked on it for about a week and a half but since then i've experience odd things such as the car jumping or popping when it changes gears. also, it tends to overheat when the car idles for more than 10 min. as well as cruise control issues. i'm very disappointed my kia sorento and i truly feel it is a safety hazard. *tr | |||

| My 2011 kia sorento 2.4 l w/ auto tranny fwd was fixed on recall almost two months ago.after driving 26 days i had bad accident.from my house to work i stopped at mcdonald rest. to buy breakfast. i got on, started my vehicle, step on my brakes to engage in reverse, the vehicle start shaking, reversed, span 360 degrees, hit the railings and ramp of the restaurant and drive forward in the middle of the parking lot. it stop because the two control arm/axles were damaged. i was shaken and it was hard to remember what really happened what i explained was the same as what the witness saw while lining up on the drive thru to order her breakfast. the witness came over and helped me. the damaged was so expensive that i have to fix the damage thru my insurance. i had the vehicle fixed by reliable shop not by kia dealership in order for me to verify if the accident was the cause of the recall repair. i almost forgot that on the early morning before the accident the vehicle reversed from my garage @ unreasonable speed that i have to control by applying the brakes. the vehicle is drivable and i am still waiting for some parts from kia. do i have to notify kia what happened or wait until the problem happen again. what is your advise. as of now i am driving the vehicle and i have phoebia everytime i back up, at least i am aware what happened. thank you | |||

| Delay in acceleration after applying brakes. this happens from a dead start and also while moving. especially bad when trying to back up a grade. (ex.) while backiing up a grade such as a driveway to the garage i back up and then hit my brake to stop. i then realize i need to back up a little farther. i take my foot off of the brake and push the accelerator. instead of going backwards i drift forward. in my mind i am thinking i don't have the accelerator pushed down so i push harder and about that time the accelerator kicks in and i go flying backwards toward the garage door. (ex.2) i am trying to back a boat into the river. i back up and hold my foot on the brake. i need to pull back out of the water some so i quickly release my foot from the brake and push the accelerator. now instead of going forward there is a delay in acceleration and i drift further into the river. (someone is going to have a very bad accident) multiply this occurence at every stop sign. especially where there is a grade involved. in my opinion i believe this is a design in the computer for what ever reason and it is a very dangerous one. | |||

| While coming to a stop, the vehicle down-shifted hard and the engine started to sputter like it was going to cut off. took to dealer and they found p0748- pressure control solenoid a electrical fault. they performed a reprogram of tsm per tsb# tra038. drove off lot and it shifted hard three times on way home. dealer said it would take 100 miles for the computer to re-learn my driving for best fuel mileage. drove to work (shifted hard 5 times) and drove to run errands. while on errands the vehicle shifted down hard and engine sputtered while slowing down in traffic. then, when releasing the brake and pressing the accelerator, the vehicle rpm/ tach went up but the vehicle wouldn't go. after stepping back on the brake and waiting 2-3 seconds i tried to move again and it did. i took the car back to dealer directly and while stopping to turn into dealer it shifted hard, engine sputtered and it again would not move ( only engine rpm's turned up). it did finally move and i was able to pull into the parking lot. now the manufacturer is replacing the transmission because to their admission they do not know what is wrong with the vehicle. nearly stranded on a five lane 35 mph road could be physically dangerous but a highway could be fatal. an evasive maneuver with this vehicle, requiring stopping and starting quickly is not an option if you can't drive during normal conditions stopping and starting. | |||

| While traveling down the road the axle and transmission suddenly went out. this caused vehicle to come to a sudden abrupt stop. this could have caused a fatal accident if traveling at a higher rate of speed or on an interstate. when the problem occurred, you had no power to the vehicle and it could not even coast to the side of the road. dealer stated it was due to a manufacturers defect caused by a bolt from the axle hitting the transmission and said they forwarded photos to kia corporate. i contacted kia corporate and asked for a written explanation and assurance that this particular problem would not happen to us again and they declined to provide anything in writing. our problem was fixed, at least for now, but i want to know that my family or someone else's does not have this problem with a tractor trailer behind them at 70 mph on an interstate. | |||

| I purchased a brand new 2011 kia sorento from patterson kia. i was driving on the highway with my family and suddenly i felt like i hit a brick wall and a my sorento rpm guage jumped to 6000 rpm. i pulled over and looked under the hood for any visual damage which i could not find, i then proceeded to put the car in drive and i noticed the car would not shift from 1st gear. again i was on the highway with my i year old. i called roadside assistant for the 1st time in my life after owning over 20 new cars. my car was towed and my family was stuck out of town with no vehicle for two days. the dealer looked at my car and said that they could not duplicate the problem. of course not! i call kia corp and the just took my name and provided me with a case #. what about being strainded without a car for 2 day and luckly i had family near by for a place to stay. i received a call from the dealership informing me that kia had issued a transmission software upgrade, so after the update my car was driving like new again. that's when i noticed about 2 weeks later on my way to work i felt that same feeling like hitting a brick wall. the dealer still has not addressed the concern and their only solution is a software update. this will be my second kia that i have owned and the last!!!! 6yr 100,000warranty is not worth the drama. | |||

| I filed this report 6/23/11 on kia.com consumer care website: 2011 sorento lx (4cyl awd) transmission has locked up multiple times. at 40 mph during acceleration, loud bang followed by severe jerking, (hard down-shift), loss of drive (engine continues to run but does not shift into gear), coast to stop,put in park. first few times it drove okay after a complete stop and from park, this last time it would not shift beyond 40 mph. towed twice to dealer but they were unable to replicate the issue in the mileage that they drove it. vehicle purchased 01/30/10 with 24k miles. mileage at the last service was 33k. first event 5/17, occurs every 4-5 days or approx 200-250 mi. chk engine lt / transmission light have never come on, computer diagnostic doesnt register any issues. the dealer was very nice but without kia's approval would not keep the car long enough to find the problem. i asked kia directly to provide a tech to drive the car long enough to experience the issue but they have refused to authorize it and have also stated that without verification they will not approve any repairs. i am very afraid that next time it happens it will cause a serious accident. i have already had two close calls on the freeway 6/28: the same issue occurred again 4 days ago (6/24) on a narrow two lane road while accellerating after a stop sign (again about 40-45 mph). this time it lost all drive and rpm's did not go up when pushing the gas pedal. put it into park and tried two more times before it finally drove. today 6/28, at a gas station the car would not go into reverse. after several tries to shift into any gear, turned it off and on again and it drove okay out of the station but 200 yds later as i was accelerating up the ramp to enter i-5 (a 6 lane freeway during early commute) it made the same loud bang, jerk and then lost drive, coasted to shoulder. turned engine off, waited a few minutes to restart, it was not very responsive but i was able to exit the freeway. | |||

| Received our repaired 2011 kia sorento back, after 6 weeks of being without it from previous transmission failure, on 29 dec 2010. the vehicle smelled as though it were hot on drive home from dealership. the next morning 30 dec 2010, with the vehicle running and while at an intersection, i put the vehicle in drive but nothing happened except a grinding noise. i moved the shift up and down for several seconds and even tried turning the vehicle on and off to no avail. finally after several seconds, i moved the shifter into drive and the grinding did not occur and the vehicle took off. the incident occured, as did the initial failure 6 weeks ago, at an intersection whereby i could have been injured. the vehicle now, at random, repeats the same scenario. | |||

| Transmission and driveshaft broke 21 nov 2010 barely making it across busy intersection. vehicle is 2011 kia sorento. purchased in february 2010 (in texas), kia sorento broke down out of state (ft. bragg, nc) thanksgiving week 2010. kia had vehicle towed to nearest dealer - a+. kia provided rental immediately - a+. kia dealership reported transmission and driveshaft would need to be replaced. (vehicle started but would not move and made grinding noise). kia now states we do not have a followback policy meaning i'm supposed to pay for vehicle to be returned from near ft. bragg nc to where i reside in texas - f. any one know the law? i have owned 7 kia's including this one, you would think kia would reward such loyalty? | |||

| Own 2011 sorento ex v6 - similar compalint as another when using pushbutton start every 4 or 5 starts a loud clunking and engine torque or transmission is experienced. also noted a continuing oscillating hum coming from the rear wheel area - very noticeable on somewhat smoother roads. not due to roads since i have tried other roads to rule out a particular road. it's from the car and not the road. it never goes away. | |||

| Tl*the contact owns a 2011 kia sorento. the contact stated that when he took his foot off the accelerator pedal and let the vehicle coast, it seemed as if the brake pedal was being depressed when traveling between 30-40 mph. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where the contact was informed that the engine was breaking due to the torque converter. the dealer took the vehicle for a 23 mile drive and that although the failure did occur, it was normal. the contact was concerned that he could possibly lose control of the vehicle. the failure mileage was 14. the current mileage was 1,900. | |||

| *altered mileage , * drive and emissions, checked engine light on, fuel cap replaced, 2 journal prefixes, repair kit wiring, brace added for wires to keep from touching tail pipe, transmission gears had to be replaced due to my vehicle not being able to shift to the next gear, and getting stuck in gears keeping me from being mobile in traffic. my windows get stuck in positions all the time when leaving drive thru windows etc. and i have to pull over,stop the car, turn it off and restart a couple of times. *although shift gears have been replaced, my vehicle (with my family in it thank god at safe speeds) will not shift/go to the next gear, becoming immobile. if parking at a store, work etc. often i can not put my vehicle into park, it remains stuck in drive often making me late for appointments. my dashboard/clusters were replaced behind the steering wheel area due to signal lights not working. my odometer was replaced on my kia sorento altering the actual mileage (my | |||

| 2011 kia sorento [xxx], having issues with vehicle pulling off to the right while driving at various speeds on various roads/highways. said vehicle was brought back to dealership service department to look at alignment. service department's work resulted in vehicle alignment worse than before. returned vehicle back to dealer service department, had several (dealership service advisor, dealership service manager, kia district service manager) all look at and drove vehicle and noticed issue. dealership service manager stated that he drove several other 2011 sorento's and noticed a couple of 4 cylinder versions with same issue, and one without the issue. dealership service manager contacted sister dealership and was informed that they also had a similiar issue with one of their 2011 sorento's. dealership service department and district manager states vehicle has been put back to factory specs, however, upon customer driving vehicle again along with the dealeship service manager, the said vehicle still pulls to the right significantly. case number ([xxx]) has been established by kia consumer headquarters. field tech rep has been contacted to look into vehicle issue. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr | |||

| My kia sorento 2011 manual transmition is jerking while we driving or coming out of a full stop but this is random,shes been at the dealer like in 4 ocasions but they can not figure out whats wrong, the computer did not advise of any problem so we continue using the car and make notes of when happend the dealer told us when it happend more often then take her back, so if anybody have an idea of what can be we would like to hear from you, thanks | |||
