Defect SummaryVehicle description: passenger vehicles. as a result of chaffing of a cruise control wire, the steering wheel rotary coupler can overheat and inadvertently deploy the driver's air bag.
Consequence SummaryDeployment of the air bag restraint system without warning can cause a driver to lose vehicle control.
Corrective SummaryDealers will install a fusible link which will protect the rotary coupler from overheating.
NotesOwner notification is expected to begin march 24, 1998. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact land rover at 1-301-731-9040.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

 While driving the vehicle was experiencing a slight slipping or pulling while driving, when consumer was driving to the repair facility the vehicle experienced sudden acceleration resulting in collision. *mjs

 While driving, consumer felt slight slipping on the accelerator while going uphill, there was an oil smell coming from the rear manifold of the vehicle, while bringing vehicle to dealer, consumer lost control of vehicle and was gently braking while it was accelerating and pulling to the left, vehicle ended up colliding into the guard rail and accelerating again, the airbags deployed and the vehicle went backwards, coming to a stop, there were no injuries in the accident. *slc

 There was a recall issued in 1998 regarding the speed control and its possible effect on the drivers airbag. my car went through the correction, but i have had problems with the cruise control twice. if this is related to the safety recall i am concerned that the correction was not sufficient.

 Vehicle parked & running; foot on brakes & shifted to drive; vehicle accelerated at excessive speed w/foot on brakes; hit 4 vehicles; air bags did not deploy upon impact. insurance adjustor/special investigator found nothing. vehicle left tire marks; mechanic said sway bar was bent. *ak
