The year is accurate, month and date are approximations.started having problems with overheating and coolant leaks.coolant wouldn't puddle under vehicle, though.but i could smell it sometimes with windows open.then, one day it would not start.towed it to land rover dealer and over the course of 3 days, they couldn't start it,either.was told it needed a new engine.paid out $5800+.now,with 104,000 miles,it's losing coolant, again.they claimed the over flow container was leaking.had it replaced.and it is still losing coolant.it is not puddling under the truck.i saw, online, where the freelander has a possible engine defect, with cylinder sleeves and gasket problems.do i have any recourse with land rover? or, could the lemon law come into effect? i,also, have experienced rear window and sunroof motor failures.i am retired. i cannot afford to replace another engine ! thank you.

On november 1st my wife and i left la proper headed towards phoenix, az. with the mileage now at 49,807 and approximately 2 hours of driving on i 10 the car was losing power, so i did my best to safely pull over to the break down lane which was next to the on ramp (very scary). i had been driving at 65 miles per hour when the car would no longer accelerate. i had to call a tow truck because after i let it rest a minute or two it wouldn't turn over. when i looked under the hood i didn't see anything out of the ordinary, no smoke, the coolant tank was full, i checked the oil dipstick and it seemed fine. there were no lights that came on inside the auto to signal that something was wrong, no overheating etc. i had it towed to the nearest dealer and was told to come back next morning. i was told that the engine blew a gasket and was advised due to damage to the engine was to replace it. i was quoted a price of $10,000.00! i ended up selling it for salvage for $500 since we were traveling so far away from home and the cost to tow it to rhode island didn't seem worth it. since then i have contacted land rover and have been given the run around like many other owners. i also have had the chance since this occurrence to check via internet that this is not unusual for the 2002 freelander. i feel this engine should of been recalled. *tr

I began accelerating on a viadock (bridge) when i felt a snap underneath me, as i reached the peak of the brigde, the car stalled out and i began descending on the bridge with my 2 daughters in the car. it completely stopped before i was able to reach the bottom of the bridge, which put me in harms way of traffic coming over the hill. i immediately hit my hazards and prayed everyone would see me before rear ending me. i was able to get the car towed. then i found out it my timing belt broke; causing my engine to shut down. total cost to fix will be $4000. i researched this make and model and found that hundreds of other people have reported similar issues. there seems to be a lot of issues with this particular make/model/year. the reviews on how land rover has been handling this particular issue are mixed with some saying they rectified the problem immediately and others saying they would not even respond to their complaints. i am nervous to see how they handle mine. *tr

I bought the car new and it operated well until aprox. 80,000 mi when i would go through a reservoir of coolant every 20 miles. i took it to the dealer several times and they would keep it for a week, charge me $2,000 each time and say they could find nothing wrong. i addressed the problems documented on the internet about this problem and they responded that i should stop believing everything i read on line. on april 4, 2010 i checked the oil and it was full of coolant. the dealer said they still could not find the problem but the engine was shot and they would give me $800 for the car. land rover has been defensive and unresponsive in dealing with the problem all along. *tr

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

I was driving the car away from my house and the engine died. it wouldn't restart and after about 2 minutes of trying, it started making a grinding noise. when i took it to a mechanic, he said it had blown the head gasket, then the piston rod had collapsed, so the engine was virtually ruined. the vehicle had 96,000 miles on it. land rover produced thousands of these vehicles with faulty engines(the 2.5 v-6). i also want to know if there is a class-action lawsuit filed against land rover and how to get involved with it.

Freelander 2002 has had many defects. the transmission failed at approx. 50k miles & was replaced. power windows failed. a/c hose cracked & repaired. manifold replaced. exterior brake lights have been repalaced. electrical power to passenger door lock system have been replaced. now, at 70k miles the coolant leaking and enging knocking. not worth replacing engine at this point. this car has cost more to repair than what is was worth. it should be recalled as a lemon & law suit against land rover.

Both head gaskets are leaking coolant from all four corners. this is a common failure in this model caused by the cylinder sleeves coming loose. the sleeves contact the head gaskets causing them to leak. eventually the engine fails. there have been continuing coolant problems with this car since new. when it was a month old all the coolant disappeared. the dealer offered no explanation. since then the coolant reservoir and temperature sensor have been replaced. it has always leaked coolant.

I took my 2002 land rover freelander into land rover to be service beacuse my transmission was slipping and the check engine light was on. they said it wasn't the transmission but it was the upper intake manifold, the vaccum hoses, and sensor that was causing the problem. so we had them replace the manifold, hoses and sensors. the service manager keep narrating that it wasn't the transmission. we picked up the car the next day again the the service manager assist it wasn't the transmission and the car is running perfectly. as soon as i went about 2 miles my transmission started slipping. i took the car back to land rover the next day irrirated. the car spent 5 days at the shop trying to find out the problem. which was indeed the transmission, they didn't offer to fix the transmission but to refund the money and put the old parts back in. which we agree to unless they gaurantee it would be in the same condition. it was making more noise then before, 2 weeks later the timming belt broke. this car is a lemon. its doesn't make since how the engine, the timming belt, the transimission, and the upper intake manifold all fell at once. the car is not running and stuck in my dirve way

2002 land rover freelander defective engine replacement *cw after taking the vehicle to the dealership, the consumer was informed the engine had a design flaw. the consumer was also informed it would cost$5,800, but the replacement engine also had a design flaw. the vehicle had a coolant leak. the first coolant leak was found during an inspection. the coolant overflow reservoir was replaced due to a crack in the plastic container. the second leak had to be performed due to the thermostat leaking. upon completion of the coolant leak repair, the technician noticed there was a knocking type noise in the engine. the consumer brought the vehicle back to the dealer and the noise had become louder. after listening to the motor and isolating the knocking noise, it was determined the noise was in the area of the #2 cylinder connecting rod deep into the engine block. a cause was never determined for the failure of the engine.

My husband and i purchased a 2002 freelander type s with around 60,000 miles on it. after owning it for less then a week it started overheating. each time it would start to overheat, it would require us to immediately pull off the road to prevent the engine block from cracking. i took it into the landrover dealer to find out what the problem could and was told that the cylinder sleeve was slipping causing coolant to leak into the engine and mix with oil and will eventually cause the engine to freeze. the only remedy for this problem was to replace the engine at the cost of 12,000 dollars and that does not include labor costs. after reading quite a few complaints this seems to be the number one problem with this vehicle. landrover should be at fault and should recall the faulty parts in the engine! *tr

I own a 2002 freelander se that has had nothing but problems that have left the car stalling on the road or overheating. i have all repair paperwork and have obeyed all regular maintenance schedules. the engine should have been replaced but land rover refuses to make the necessary repairs. other issues have been experienced throughout the life of the car. the vehicle was purchased new. *tr

Since i purchased my 2002 landrover freelander in aug of 2007 with 63456 miles on it, i have taken it in for numerous costly repairs. the first being 12 days after the purchase in attempt to fix what i thought was causing the disappearance of my coolant, the cracked coolant reservoir was replaced, only to find out to the engine would continually overheat and i would become stranded on the road on at least 3 occasions even after i had taken it in by this point and had it suction tested to see if a leak could be located with in the coolant system and was told it passed. so i continued to operate the vehicle shuttling myself to and from school and work, stocking my vehicle with necessary coolant to maintain the proper level. after a traumatic incident on the freeway in i june 2008, where i was forced to quickly pull to the shoulder going form 60 to zero while still in traffic, i took the car in to have it serviced again where i soon found out the coolant contaminated the oil because of the seal slipping (through research of my own i have learned the material the seal is made of is in adequate to hold high temperatures for even a reasonable life of the car). unable to afford the costly replacement of the engine which was advised at this time, 6/08 (over the worth of the vehicle at $7,579 + taxes new and with multiple research attempts done to find a used one with no success because it's such a common problem with these models) i bought some time with an engine flush only to have the internal damage the seal failure had caused result in the complete seizure of my engine as of 1/09. i have been put in harms way in near misses of causing an accident as i uncontrollably come to a stop and soon after sit helplessly on the side of the road through no fault of my own, countless times do to the manufactures negligence for the safety of the operator. even after this whole ordeal, i still find myself fortunate to only be out a costly vehicle and not the loss of my life. *tr

Bought the car used 2002 freelander land rover v6 and drove it. day four heard a loose bolt sound, it went away. later that day driving home with children in the car, it died on the freeway, no warning lights, no warning at all, just died. turns out the timing belt broke and broke the valves and now they want to replace the entire engine. i paid 4k for the car and it will cost 6k to repair. this car is dangerous. we had to move over 3 highway lanes with no power and sit on the side of the road for 1.5 hours to be towed. i had my children in the car with me, this was very very scary! *tr

Many land rover freelanders are having serious problems due to the faulty construction of the engine. prior to complete engine failure, there may be unexplained coolant loss, overheating, and other problems related to head gasket failure. because the cylinder liners are steel and the block is alloy, the cylinder liners tend to work their way into the block. when this happens, there is no way to repair the vehicle short of engine replacement, and many of the replacement engines have the same construction defect as the original vehicle. *tr

I have a 2002 freelander bought new 50000 miles later new engine 4000 miles later new transmission 45000 miles needs another engine through in a window problem to. according to the dealership i was told that there is a design flaw in the engine and the company that makes the engine is no longer in business and land rover wont help because the second engine only had a 1 year warranty. land rover needs to standby their product especially when they knew there were problems with this engine what can be done. *tr

I have had my 2002 land rover freelander maintained meticulously... but the engine kept over heating and i had disappearing coolant. now i am in need of a 3rd engine and i only have 62,000 miles on my car. since my vehicle is out of warranty a new engine will cost me $10,000. land rover said they would pay half of a new engine. but admit they put a faulty engine in 2 years ago when i received my 2nd engine. *tr

I bought a 2002 land rover freelander as a 2nd owner of the vehicle from a local car dealership. since the purchase of the vehicle, i replaced a sunroof, a transmission, the brakes require constant replacement (more often than should be necessary), a passenger door window motor and the engine has been replaced once and now has blown again - i am unable to have this engine replaced #1 there are no more engines as the landrover dealer only made this defective model 1 year and there have been so many engines replaced by other owners that there are no other engines available. even if there were any engines i would not pay $10,000 to have another defective engine placed in this vehicle. there are over 1400 messages on the edmond forum.com outlining other peoples similar complaints. this defective vehicle has caused countless people's credit to be ruined, and financial hardship to untold families. i wonder why nothing has been done already with all the complaints that have been filed. landrover needs to reimburse these owners the money they have spent - such as myself on repairs, constantly in the shop and having to pay for rental vehicles. the local dealer was rude and had absolutely no sympathy and actually told me after bringing my vehicle in to them over and over that he will be glad when my husband and i get out from under this vehicle and admitted that this vehicle had been a problem for them. but... the dealer wouldn't even offer us a free oil change for all of our hardships. it is a shame. i hope eventually something is done before this company bellies up and files bankruptcy and all of these families that have been ruined will have no recourse for their financial woes as a result of this horrible situation. please help any way you can! *tr

My car was overheating, had $1200 worth of repairs; now they are telling me it needs a new engine for $9000. through the internet i have learned how many complaints there are with the 2002 land rover freelander - basically, after 70,000 miles it needs a new engine, this will be followed with a new transmission. my car has 75,000 miles and is sitting at the dealer, land rover volunteered to pay 20-percent; the land rover dealer volunteered to pay 20-percent...leaving me with 60-percent. they are aware of the problem - and will not do the right thing. *tr

My 2002 landrover freelander has spent more time in the mechanic shop than it has spent in my driveway! before the warranty expired, i took it into the encino dealership several times with the same problem. the last time i had it towed there, the car had just dumped all of its fluids onto the floor and was smoking again. this keeps happening over and over and over. dealership said they checked and the car was fine. warranty expired and problem continued to occur. took it to another mechanic and was told there is a major problem with the transmission -- must be replaced. also having problems with the coolant leaking--have tried to fix the issue several times--still have same problem. mechanic discovered a crack in the engine. if this is starting to sound familiar it is because there are several different forums online with 2002 freelander owners all saying the same thing! what is being done about this???!!!! the repairs were extremely costly for me as a college student and now as a mother of a newborn i am terrified to drive the car for fear of something serious happening! i have even been told by mechanics and even the service manager at the pasadena landrover dealership that landrover is aware of the problems and warned me it is a lemon! i have been calling landrover's corporate offices for weeks and am still waiting for some kind of answer... *tr

Bought a 2002 land rover freelander used a little over a year ago with under 55,000 miles. just got it back yesterday from the shop with an estimated repair cost of over $10000.00 and that is just in parts not labor. did some research on the vehicle and come to find out others have had the same problems with less mileage on there vehicles and there have been absolutely no recalls on this vehicle that include any of these problems. the worst of which being the engine leaking antifreeze into the oil. this could cause the motor to overheat and seize and lock up. who knows what kind of damage or what kind of accident this could have caused if this had happened to the vehicle when my wife was driving to work . we lucked out and discovered the problems before my wife, myself or anyone else got hurt. there are major problems with these vehicles and landrover should be held responsible. *tr

The 2002 land rover freelander has been nothing but trouble since i purchased it in 2005. it has always had problems with overheating, when i talked to the dealership about it, they told me the freelander burnt through coolant faster than most cars. i did not think it was normal for it to burn through a gallon of coolant every 3-4 weeks. this has continued since then. until now, my freelanders timing belt broke ( at 60,800) well before recommended changing of the belt and has essentially totaled my car. since it will cost me a minimum of $4,500 to fix it. (up to $8,500). the car is only worth $8,000. *tr

This car had only 61000 miles on it and needed a new engine. coolant leaked into engine just 3 weeks after i paid $2k for work on the coolant system (reservoir, hoses) and a plenum valve replacement to address the same problem it was then experiencing (overheating and engine revving). dealer said a piston sleeve had slipped. full engine replacement required. this car has received all of its recommended service appointments and had a new transmission at 50k miles. *tr

We were hearing a loud noise and had no idea what it was. as it turns out we were first told that it needed a new engine, however after careful diagnostics we were finally told that it needs a new intake manifold. this is about $2200. that includes labor costs and part. i have no money and the car just sits in the front of my house and is not drivable at all. i still owe so much on this car and have no idea what to do.... *tr

I have a land rover freeland that started having coolant leakage in early february of 2007. i tried to get the car in to get fixed and was put off by land rover until my warranty expired. they never fixed it. it leaks coolant constantly, it looses power, it over heats and steams, the coolant is an oily brown color no matter how many times i flush it. this car has a bad head gasket i'm afraid and i've read about and know many people with the exact same problem. i've replaced the reservoir bottle, flushed the coolant, replaced the thermostat and nothing fixes the problem. i had a month long battle with land rover to fix it and they refused. this entire engine needs to be recalled, this is a terrible car and a hazard on the road, i'm scared every time i see a freelander that it's going to blow something and kill someone on the freeway, land rover should be ashamed and all the cars should be recalled. *tr

The engine started to overheat so i pulled over on the interstate and let engine cool, this continued until i was able to make it home. dealer now says that the engine needs a new heads and head gaskets. apparently this is a common problem on this vehicle. after locating this site i do believe that this is a defect in manufacturing. *tr

Our well-maintained 2002 freelander had engine and transmission failure within 6 months of reaching 50,000 miles. in both cases the failures occurred during highway driving with no warning lights or indications of problems. in both cases the loss of power/control posed a serious health hazard to everyone in the car. one of these events occurred immediately following service and safety check by the dealer. this care is so badly designed that is a driving hazard and should be recalled in its entirety. the very extensive information on major failures without warning attest to the dangers that this vehicle is imposing on the public on a daily basis. *tr

We currently have a landrover freelander that is on its third engine (within 1 year). we are continuously inconvenienced with this vehicle having issues that bring it back to the dealership they claim to fix the issue and within 3,000 miles we are back again like clockwork. landrover does know about this issue, and we have a vehicle that we could never sell to anyone else, purchased an extended warranty on, and have absolutely no recourse with. i brought the car in last week for them to fix an issue, service engine light was on and i was inhaling coolant fumes; they stated that it was fixed, no sooner than 4 hours after i picked the car up on friday afternoon, did the same check engine light go on and i currently am driving around inhaling fumes from coolant again. when do these issues get resolved. it has been over a year of the same issues with a car, that the sales woman's words to my husband were, the first vehicle created by landrover is still on the road. my car was purchased new, has approx. 57,600 miles on it, it is 5 years old, and for the last year and a has had nothing but issues. i asked the service manager how many of these models have had issues stated, more than he would like to admit. please let me know what can be done. at this point my husband would like the extended warranty money back and at least half of the book value of the vehicle. *tr

We purchased a 2002 land rover freelander. the car has had numerous occasions of overheating, losing coolant and oil and we have now been told a new engine is needed. the car owner was also told at 50,756 miles that a new transmission was necessary. apparently land rover is aware of this recurring problem with this vehicle, but is doing nothing to correct the problems. there has been occasions when the car stops or overheat is causing potential safety concerns/problems for the car occupants as well as other drivers. *tr

Have had multiple problems with vehicle with replacements needed for the following items: sunroof assembly, brakes and rotors twice, coolant tank, coolant tank lid, intake manifold assembly, wiper switch, 2 vacuum hoses, window regulator, sunroof drain tubes and headliner. now, despite maintaining the recommended service schedule, we are going to have to have the engine replaced at 67k miles. the coolant is leaking into the oil and after having the head gaskets replaced and a cooler part replaced, the dealer now believes that there is a crack in the sleeve. there apparently is a back order on replacement engines so i will have to cough up $$$ to keep the oil drained and coolant filled until one is available. why should a $35,000 vehicle need an engine replaced at 67k miles? *tr

I was driving to get dinner with my daughter and my landrover freelander just fell dead while driving. this incident could have been fatal if it had happened on the freeway. i had the car towed to my home less than 2 miles away and had a certified land rover mechanic come to inspect the vehicle. he informed me that the motor locked up for no apparent reason. the car was not low on oil, nor had it been overheating and there were no other liquids mixed in the oil. the only option going forward would be to have the entire engine replaced. this vehicle has had one mechanical failure after another and is not worth the money spent. *tr

My 2002 land rover freelander has experienced sluggish acceleration to a jolt and dowshifts on its own at freeway speed. about 2 weeks after buying it used i took it to a local repair shop and they said i needed a new transmission, had it towed back to the dealer and they said it didn't. needless to say they wouldn't replace it. it has a overheating problem which is continuous. the engine sounds like it has no oil in it, even after an oil change i have to check it to make sure because the noise is so loud. the hdc light comes on and the vehicle seems to drive in an almost 4wheel low at all times. there was antifreeze in my oil. this vehicle has major problems!!!!!!!! *tr

During the repair of our transmission, we began to get check engine lights. after the transmission was fixed, it was taken to the dealer for service. upon driving to the dealer, the car had no power. this became very difficult to drive and dangerous. trying to get up to the 65 mph speed limit on a freeway took almost 2 miles. i was also worried the car would stall in traffic due to this condition. the car was serviced and it was determined that the mass airflow sensor and the variable intake motors 1 and 2 had failed. the variable intake motors had failed 15,000 miles /12 months before and were replaced during the long block replacement. after all repairs were completed the car was taken home. the next day the check engine light came on. the following day i scheduled an appointment. during the drive to the dealer, the same power problems were present. this made driving this car dangerous in that there was no way to know if it would accelerate. the dealer then determined that the air intake manifold gasket had cracked. this too was a new part from the long block repair 15,000 miles /12 months prior. right now this repair is being performed. the land rover dealer acknowledges that these car should not be owned without any type of warranty due to the numerous problems. *jb

In october of 2002 my husband and i purchased a 2002 freelander from landrover north dade of florida. the car was in the showroom with minimal miles. within three(3) days of purchase we returned the car because it shook violently after reaching a speed of 50 mph. i must admit the dealership advised us of some type of malfunction and offered us an exact replacement freelander. at that point we should have asked for a refund of our cash payment and left landrover alone. it has been a completely expensive nightmare diving this lemon with its myriad of problems: repeated overheating, loss of power without warning (often times resulting in close call situations, replaced brakes and rotor (lost count), not to mention an air conditioner unit that only works on full power(imagine that in florida). at present, the vehicle is at an authorized landrover repair shop because the warranty has ended. the landrover dealership has been negligent even rude when approached regarding all these mechanical defects. two weeks out of every two to three months, my young children and i are without transportation and at least $800.00 minimum, each time. most importantly however is my fear to drive the car at all, and to add insult to injury, we are offered $3000.00 by carmax when we attempted to sell them a car we purchased for over $30,000. with 73k miles. *nm

I purchased a new 2002 freelander from land rover fort worth (tx) in january of 2002. while under warranty the car had numerous problems. my warranty expired in february of 2006 (4 years), but due to my low mileage 32,000 miles, i did not purchase an extended warranty. since february 2006, i have replaced the brakes for the 3rd time ($1000), had the engine overheat due to a faulty temp gauge which in turn blew the intake gasket ($1500), replaced the heater core again (pd. for by dealership), and am now faced with replacing the entire transmission ($5000). my transmission trouble began in early august 2006, when the car began to jerk and shudder unexpectedly. i immediately took the car into the dealership to check out the issue. they replaced the transmission temp sensor and said the care was fixed. i picked up the fixed car and 4 hours later the dangerous jumping/shuddering happened again. while attempting to drive the car back to the dealership, the problem grew worse and several warning lights lit up on the dash. i pulled over and the car was then flatbedded to the dealership. the next diagnosis was that an electronic computer chip (ecc) for the transmission needed to be replaced. the part was ordered and installed - but this did not fix the problem. the dealership now states that the entire transmission needs to be replaced for $5000. the car currently has 37,000 miles (highway and city miles only - no off-roading) and has been serviced on time and only at lr dealerships for routine maintenance. i find this entire situation unacceptable. *jb

The passenger cabin filled with smoke. apparent cause is a blown cam plug. dealer claims cold climate causes build-up of vapor presure in the engine. the plug blows out and oil pours onto the hot exhaust system. dealer claims they have seen this before, and that a cold climate kit that is used in canada resolves the issue. but land rover will not pay for the modification which cost me $296! this could have easily caused a fire of an accident.*ak

Numerous times the engine of my freelander loses compression and the vehicle will not travel at a speed faster than 5 mph. the vehicle lurches and won't maintain a proper speed. the vehicle has been into the dealership several times. i have been told that they aren't sure what is wrong with it. approximately 8 months ago the replaced the throttle body. the vehicle worked properly for 7 months. a month ago it happened again. this time i was on the expressway in between semi trucks. the vehicle lost speed and i could not tracel faster than 5 mph. i was able to get the vehicle off to the side of the road. i let it coll down for 20 minutes. when i started the vehicle it was able to drive. i took it to the dealership and they said that they didn't know what the problem was. however, they did state, we have been having problems with this model. i was told to drive the vehicle home and bring it back if it happened again. one week later, it happened again on the highway. again' i let it cool down, and i was able to get it home. i made contact with the dearlership and land rover of north america, and not once have they asked to see the vehicle, offer to fix it, look at it. all the have attempted to do is for me to trade up to a discovery. the vehicle sits in my driveway because it is too dangerous to drive and land rover refuses to take the vehicle back, or even offer to fix it. *ak
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - COOLING SYSTEM

We have had several incidents with my 2002 land rover freelander type s overheating and check engine light going on, we have regularly taken it to our local land rover dealer to find out the problem. the latest, now august 2011, the coolant was found to be low, and a discussion with the mechanic and the shop person indicated that their is no external leaks, and that the coolant may be leaking into the engine. i was told that the cylinders/heads are made of different materials, and that a gap may have formed there causing the coolant to leak into the engine. i was told that if the coolant continues to leak without any visible signs of external problems, the engine would need to be replaced. we have done all of the routine maintenance as well as thousands of dollars of repairs for the cooling - including multiple thermostats(i believe we are on our fourth one, including the ones under warranty, etc. the latest diagnosis is coolant into the engine and fouling a cylinder. i repeated asked, since we were under warranty, if we had a lemon and have now seen thousands of postings on the internet relating to this problem, with models from 2000 to 2005, the years the car was available in the us. it appears that there are no viable replacement engines available that do not have this same problem since, the vehicle was discontinued in 2005. based on the information i have gathered, it appears that the engine used in this vehicle was of a faulty design, given the fact that a replacement with out this problem is not available for the record, my vehicle info is as follows: make: land rover model: freelander type s year: 2002 purchase date: 07/2002 i am the original owner, and i purchased this from land rover portland, portland oregon

I have a 2002 land rover freelander. the car is more trouble than its worth. from the truck not starting, windows rolling up and down when they feel like it, engine coolant leaking, intake manifold problems, misdiagnosed from landrover, the locks don't work. the car basically starts when it wants to, it doesn't need a new starter, or spark plugs or an alternator. when driving the car wont accelerate as a car should it rides bumpy as if the engine is about to drop out. land rover wont help with anything because they say that the company who made the engines for the truck went out of business. many people complain about this truck. when i took the car to land rover to see what the ticking noise under the hood was they charged me 200 for a diagnostic and diagnosed the problem wrong. the major problems are the windows rolling down, that's a safety hazard when you have people in the car and have the window lock on yet the window still rolls down. the coolant leaking because once a land rover engine overheats you have to replace the whole engine. the locks don't work meaning you cant lock the vehicle also a safety hazard and the car doesn't accelerate past 30 mph sometimes and its not the transmission. *tr

I began experiencing reasonably significant loss of coolant over the last few months. i monitored and refilled every time i saw the level below the minimum level in the overflow tank. over the last couple weeks i have began noticing what appeared to be solidified oil in the oil cap and am growing very worried that i am heading down the same path that so many 2002 land rover freelander owners have experienced. coolant is clearly leaking into the engine, is mixing with the oil and is in very short order destroying my engine. with 100's of reports of this very same issue it's obvious land rover is aware of the problem and based on the best information i can gather has no solution. they apparently don't even have replacement engines available as the model was discontinued. this makes repair completely impossible. i still owe several thousand on the vehicle. given the accounts of many whose engines have seized while driving i am fearful of driving it. the negative impact of the widespread knowledge of this issue, bad pr, has devalued my freelander to the point that it cannot be sold for what it's supposed to be valued at. i own a vehicle from land rover that does not deserve to be on the streets. to repair it is apparently impossible. selling it can only be done at an extreme financial loss. the issue is a known manufacturing flaw. i believe it's time the dot stepped up and pulled these cars off the street before something very bad happens and holds land rover responsible by compensating all freelander owners for their manufacture of a very, very flawed vehicle. please take action and help take an unsafe vehicle off us roads. *tr

I have a landrover freelander 2002. i have had the car for a year. 2 months after getting the car it needed a head gasket with only 87,000 miles on it. from what i've heard mine lasted longer than most. i had to put 2000,00 into it right after putting 4000,00 as a down payment. the repair shop said that landrover recommended it get a new motor but the warranty comp. wouldn't cover it. a new motor cost about 7000,00. this is going on with hundreds of landrovers, because of the material the motor is made out of. i cant think of one good reason why there should not be a recall on this car. people are making payments on cars they cant even drive. we may be forced to do a voluntary repo so we can get another car. peoples lives are being destroyed because of this car. something has to be done. *tr

We bought the freelander 2002 in april of 2002. brand new. started to have break problems and alarm system problems, along with constant air coolant/broken air conditioning problems that we had to take the car in for repairs. the transmission broke down in 2006 at approximately 30,000 miles. the dealer haggled with us because the warranty had just expired two months earlier! we ended up paying approximately $2,000 towards a new transmission that we now discover has been an ongoing problem for land rover freelanders. then, as i was driving my car a few days ago to be serviced, the car started to overheat. i had to have the car towed to the dealer and we are now told that the engine has broken down and that we are going to have to pay several thousand dollars to have the engine replaced. we told the dealer that the engine has had well documented defect issues from manufacture and that the innocent consumer should not have to pay for a manufacturing defect. our car is now undrivable and only has 37,000 miles on it. we are being told that. *tr

We bought a land rover freelander 9 months ago from a used car dealership. 2 weeks ago we noticed the heating gage going up and down and we needed a lot of coolant. yesterday, the engine failed and we were told we need a new engine. according to the mechanic it was a problem in the heating system because the coolant is leaking into an unknown area. landrover says since we didn't buy it from them, they will not help us. in order to file a complaint, we must tow the car to the dealership, pay the dealership to examine the care and then want 2 to 6 months for an engine, possibly a transmission as well to be order. they are backordered nation wide. the car has on 40,000 miles and has had good maintenance regularly. *tr

Check engine light , ticking engine, antifreeze , oil leak, smelling coolant inside car and numerous other issues such as window regulator , wiper motor and rattling noises underneath car has been my complaints since feb 13,2008. parts were replaced that didn't correct the problem of the ticking engine, coolant leaks, smell of coolant inside car,and check engine light which always comes on a couple of hours after the dealer returns my car to me. car was towed from freeway due to breakdown on the way home 15 minutes after picking car up from madison dealership for engine repair. dealership stated that this was due to an oil seal/oil plug and it was not their fault although they just finished working on the engine. i did not have my car for a total of 30 days not including the prior visits where they took almost 2 weeks to diagnose the problem. i was charged for a rental car during this period. milwaukee dealership claimed they corrected the engine problem on 3 different visits which i paid $600.00 for a timing belt which never corrected the problem along with a $100.00 deductible for using the warranty. the parts replaced on the vehicle is as follows; manifold assy. motor assy for wiper blades, window regulator, timing belt and differential front mounting which did not resolve rattling noise underneath car. milwaukee dealership has also attempted to correct these same problems with no success. the coolant leak is still apparent and the check engine light is on again. the only thing the dealership can tell me is to monitor how many times i have to replace coolant. in the mean time, they have sent me home with a car that has a check engine light on and a disappearing coolant problem. i guess they will continue giving me the runaround until my warranty expires aug 2,2008 just as many others has reported they did to them. please help!!!!!

*tr

We had just had our car in for servicing prior to a longer drive. while we were driving at highway speeds, our car accelerated without warning. the engine revved without any increase in speed. once home, contacted our dealership where they proceeded to tell us that we would require a new transmission when we were only just out of warranty. they could not tell us what the cause of the problem was - only that it would cost upwards of $6000 to fix it by replacing the transmission. prior to this, our dealership had our land rover freelander for 4 weeks fixing other known problems such as the coolant system, again, just out of warranty for a fix of over $3000; once it was returned, the engine light came back on immediately (i.e. on our way home from picking the car up) - i returned immediately with the vehicle and was told that the engine block had been cracked which would require an additional $2000 plus in repairs (although they did discount us on this repair - more than likely because they had caused it). we have had nothing but difficulty with this vehicle. the issues began almost immediately from the date of purchase. additionally, the land rover service people are less than helpful. i believe they are deceptive, arrogant, and lack the knowledge and skill required to fully service a vehicle. i have gone through three different dealerships to locate someone whom i trust to service this vehicle; finally, now that the care is out of warranty we will be going to a local repair shop where they were able to walk me through what was wrong with the vehicle and fix the problem. *tr

My 2002 land rover freelander had an engine failure in september 2006. this is a common problem with this make of vehicle and cost me $6,849.61 to replace since i was out of warranty. other popular problems with this vehicle are problems with the window motors. my sunroof and two backdoor windows would not operate properly. i could only pay to repair the backdoor windows at the expense of $904.88. also, the drivers side door lock does not function properly, but i was not able to have that fixed. *tr

On two separate occasions, one days after my car was cleared for a second time by a land rover dealer. my car went into 'limited perfomance mode' while i was commuting to work....i was in the high speed lane and the middle lane and my car would not accelerate about 20 mph. i had to call 911 on the second occasion as it happened because i was in the merge of 2 highways in the evening. my car also had downshifting problems where the downhill decent control would come on out of nowhere causing my car to buck forward and drop down to second gear. the dealership again said that is could not be duplicated 3 times before they finally found something and then it kept happening anyway. my transmission let go on the highway at just over 60k miles and then my engine lining shifted spewing oil only about 2 months after. the dealerships are well aware of the poor quality of these vehicles and yet, they sell and re-sell them to the unsuspecting consumers. i have a lawyer and will be suing lr for everything i can, including lost wages, emotional and physical distress, and anything else that can be tied into my two year nightmare. i strongly suggest you get these vehicles off the road before someone gets killed. thank you *tr

My 2002 landrover freeland has overheated 5 times since i purchased it in 2003. each time the rand rover dealer repaired it and said it was something different. it just happened again and i brought it to a gargage. (since my warranty is up and the dealer ship claimed it was something different each time.).. this time it was fixed costing me $800.00. not only has this been a problem, but i have had the headlights go out on me while driving across state at night on the thruwa and now the rear window is now not working. i have had nothing but problems and have spent alot of $$ on this truck. unfortunately i cannot afford to buy something else. i am a single mom trying to out her kids through college... : ( i hope something can be done to prevent another consumer having these problems and someone really getting hurt. i have been very lucky i havent been in an accident or had the truck blow up while it over heated !!! lol thanks.... *nm

I took my vehicle to landrover when i noticed a loss of power in engine & tapping noise while it was in warranty. a few times landrover classified my problem as the throttle, which happened to be a recall item. once they did the recall repair on the throttle in 4/05, i took it back a few days later because there was no change after the initial recall repair. than i was told it was a common problem among all freelanders. now that the vehicle is out of warranty, i learned about a tsb that came out a year after i reported my problem for my identical problem that existed than and now that landrover tech's misdiagnosed, mistaken or ignored for something else. they are clever enough not to include what the customer complaint is on the repair ticket & only include what they did. the loss of power is unpredictable and is a hazard that landrover is fully aware of per the tsb listed below. it's disturbing that the repairs done to my vehicle under recall never fixes the problem. the roof & pillars recall was fixed twice when in warranty and broke yet again and remains broken. landrover now wants to charge to fix it again. why, the fix doesn't work. the vehicle hasn't stopped yet, eventually it will get to the point where i can't drive it because of the unpredictable behavior. kv6 variable intake manifold system (vis) motor diagnostic aid no: 19/01/06/nas fgn 310-00 ref: 19/03/03/nas ta02tb01, ta021901, ta031901 issue: 1 date: 26 june 2006. *tr

I bought a 2002 land rover freelander hse with 92,000mi, about 6 months ago, few months after this the check engine light started flashing, so i took it to the repair shop, it turned out to be the thermostat and some related parts, i ended up paying 600 dollars. then a week after that my transmission felt weird and showed a code in f-4 in the dashboard so i took it to the repair shop and it turns out it is a solenoid, the repair cost will be about another 300 dlls. *tr

We purchased a 2002 landrover freelander with 71,000. regular maintenance had been performed on car by original owner and we continued it. in the first 2 year of ownership we had to replace the waterpump twice at $ 1,100 and $565. there was a recall on fuel filter after i had it replaced due to breaking down. now, my wife was driving it and it broken down on side of highway with my 2 year old daughter from almost 2 hours. shop called said needs new engine because block is made of alloy and cylinder sleeve made of steel. when they get hot expand at different rates. after a while this cause the sleeve to drop into lower block and the engine has to be replaced. it cannot be rebuilt. this cost at least $4,000 for engine plus repair. do a internet search and see all complaints about this engine. most go out between 50,000 and 100,000 miles. please do something about this and not let landrover get away with taking advantage of us citizen.

*tr

My 2002 land rover freelander was having cooling leak problems starting at 50,000 miles. it was found that the leaks were caused by brittle heater lines and brittle universal heater joints made out of plastic. the lines failed catastrophically. the lines and joints were replaced costing $50. at 58,000 mi the thermostat had to be replaced because the coolant leak still existed and was leaking from this location. cost of repair at dealer $1100. at 59,828 mi the engine failed catastrophically. the cause of the engine failure is due to the cylinder liner (sleeve) slipping causing a gap which caused the coolant leak into the engine block. the engine required total replacement. there is no recall against this known problem. land rover

My landrover freelander broke down suddenly while driving on the garden state parkway. no warning lights were lit, the gauges were fine, etc. the car stalled while at 65 mph. after taking it to the shop, the car needs a new engine at only 65,000 miles.

*tr

I have a 2002 freelander that i bought new in 2002. i have had nothing but problems with it. most recently the truck was undriveable for several months at the beginning of 2008 due to overheating. finally saved enough money to take it and have it repaired. have driven it for 5 months and am again losing coolant. have paid several thousand dollars for repairs due to overheating and other issues over the last year. now, the right rear passenger window motor is dead. like many others who own these vehicles, the transmission had to be replaced. there are clunking noises when it is put in gear. there is an electrical gremlin that makes the rear window go up and down for no reason. i have had the sunroof stuck open and had that fixed. the motor was tapping constantly and the dealer told me the sound was normal. an independent mechanic repaired the tapping noise which was the intake manifold. my truck has been out of warranty and i'm out of money. *tr

After several incidents with my 2002 land rover freelander type s overheating, i took it to my local land rover dealer to find out the problem. the coolant was found to be low, and a discussion with the mechanic and the shop person indicated that their is no external leaks, and that the coolant may be leaking into the engine. i was told that the cylinders/heads are made of different materials, and that a gap may have formed there causing the coolant to leak into the engine. i was told that if the coolant continues to leak without any visible signs of external problems, the engine would need to be replaced. i have 57,500 original miles on this vehicle, and all required maintenance has been done. it is now out of manufactures warranty, and i do not have an extended warranty. i have seen thousands of postings on the internet relating to this problem, with models from 2000 to 2005, the years the car was available in the us. it appears that there are no viable replacement engines available that do not have this same problem since, the vehicle was discontinued in 2005. based on the information i have gathered, it appears that the engine used in this vehicle was of a faulty design, given the fact that a replacement with out this problem is not available for the record, my vehicle info is as follows: make: land rover model: freelander type s year: 2002 purchase date: 07/12/2002 i am the original owner, and i purchased this from a land rover dealer in simsbury, ct. *tr

My 2002 landrover freelander's engine failed at around 70,000 miles without any warning from the vehicles warning light system and just as the vehicle's original 5 year warranty ended. the dealers repair shop attributed the engine failure to overheating. due to the manufacture discontinuing manufacturing this engine's the dealer had to locate a rebuilt engine as a replacement. the total cost of the rebuilt engine and labor was an astounding $7,500.00. due to the high incident of this particular engine failing and the manufacturer not making the engine any longer it took around 3 months to procure a replacement rebuilt engine and install it. also, the sunroof motor and the rear passenger window motor both failed and had to be replaced at a cost of around $1,200.00. my dealer recommended that i join a class action law suite if i could find one dealing with this vehicle's clear lemon qualities. i understand from other freelander owners the next thing to go will likely be the transmission. all of this leaves me with very little confidence in the vehicle's safety or reliability. i feel the out of pocket expenses for this engine replacement are unwarranted and should be the responsibility of the manufacture. on behalf of all freelander owners who have had to replace the engine of this car please issue a recall of the engine and force the manufacture to take responsibility for their failure to produce and/or use a sound piece of equipment in this vehicle. thank you. *tr

The engine/head gasket issue is the repair that is the most critical and terminal condition for the vehicle. the dealers mechanics will never fix the gasket, so they will only offer the engine replacement, but either repair will cost you more than the suv is worth. and yes, the brake pads and then rotors wear out very quickly, because of the weight of the vehicle (the dealer says). i personally think it has more to do with the fact that there are 2 disc front brakes and 2 drum rear brakes on the vehicle, hence the wear and weight all goes to the front of the vehicle. another poor design flaw issue, and i was told the drum brakes were there to better allow the off-roading. yeah, who ever could off road these things, they fall apart on the driveway!

*tr

I have had many problems with my 2002 freelander. mainly related to engine over-heating which causes coolant to evaporate and also the coolant leaks into the engine. i mentioned this problem with the dealer when the vehicle was in warranty, but then they simply refused to take care of the core problem which is the engine. this engine over-heating resulted in spoiling the a/c blower and heater core, and also i was left stranded in the middle of no-where 4 times. and each time i had to tow the vehicle ($150 each time) and the only response from dealership was to keep adding more coolant. i am now out of warranty and not sure what do i do with this vehicle. i cannot use this to go anywhere (it can fail anytime), don't feel like cheating somebody selling this car. i am totally clueless and need help to the core issue resolved, which i think is engine. *tr

Our 2002 land rover freelander began to over heat at 63,216 miles. we were lucky in that we were at a drive through near our house. we took the car home right away. upon getting an appointment with the dealer, the car was taken in for inspection. the long block needed replacing. this was due to the fact that a cylinder sleeve had slipped. we were able to get the engine replaced. upon further discussion with the dealer, it seems to be known that the engine will fail. this dealer has had owners come in for their 3rd motor all within the warranty. the life expectancy seems to be between 30,000 and about 65,000 miles. we are lucky that we were not anywhere far away or my wife was on business. this seems to be a bad design and right now it looks like land rover will do nothing about it. those whom are out of warranty are out of luck. *jb

I finally got my freelander back from over 4 months of waiting. my 2002 freelander required a new engine after it was found that mud and/or debris had entered my timing belt enclosure and caused my engine to jump time and catostrophically destroy my engine valves and cylinder walls. a specific land rover dealer noted that mud was the total cause of my engine failure, when in fact it was a 1 x 1 hole in the timing belt enclsoure; this hole is a design flaw or oversight and thus allows any dirt/grime/debris/mud to enter and cause severe damage. freelander never showed visible signs (meter or steam) that it was overheating. insurance has covered this issue under a flood coverage and has fronted over $12,800 for a new engine. i haven't received any loss-use coverage for the 4 months. upon inspection of my new 2003 engine, i found a new plastic piece that now covers the once 1 x 1 hole in the timing belt enclosure. this piece also has a piece number and costs appoximately $6.00. now you can see, a mere $6 item would have saved me and insurance over $13,000. land rover has not initiated a recall or service bulletin to my knowledge; i suspect that this will only be installed on an as needed basis for those drivers who do use their freelander as advertised by land rover. in a recent article in land rover chronicle, it was stated that the 2006 freelander will have a better sealed engine compartment, due to the fact that most drivers are using their vehicles for off-road use (as advertised); they also state that this vehicle wasn't designed to match the discovery or defender. on top of it all, my front axle required replacement due to a new engine install (vibration problems), a new 02 sensor, plus i've noticed a small hand-sized dent on my hood (from closing). i still have problems of some sort since my service engine light it on now.*ak

I purchased this suv with only 14,000 on it with the remaining factory warranty. at 21,000 the suv engine left me stranded on the interstate 2 hours from home. it had to be towed. land rover fixed it, $13,000 they found metal shavings in the engine at 21,000 miles. the warranty covered the engine, but they charged me $80 for an oil change~ you have to put new oil in a new engine~~but they made me pay for the oil! they navigation system screen went black and keeps going off, they said the warranty would pay for it, never heard back and the warranty is out last month. they fixed a recall on the carb the last oil change. the brakes ground down to the rotors, had to replace them at 20,000. new engine left me stranded in another state with my little girl in the middle of no where with no cell service. needed towed again. the anti-freeze hose had come loose from engine, caused it to shut down...had to fix, no warranty, car had 52,000 miles (2,000 over) last week i was taking my daughter to school and smelled gasoline very strongly, after having to idle in behind the buses in front of her school. with children walking by, and blocked in by another mom, it nearly exploded! the gas gauge had went down 1/2 tank, it started to smoke and nearly got fire. they said i was very lucky to have not been in a fire with my daughter. over 3/4 tank of gas had leaked out under the hood of the suv and if something would have sparked it, my daughter & i would not be here, and maybe not the children in front of the school standing by buses or on bus next to suv. they also found oil plug was leaking after land rover dealer changed oil at $80 and never put seal back on plug. almost burnt engine up again. right now it is sitting at repair shop, land rover accidentally sent them a wheel bearing last week instead of the part to fix gas leak, i have a rental car for over 1 week now. i have no idea how much the cost will be to get it fixed this time, i'm pretty much screwed. *nm

I owned a 2002 land over freelander, since 2006. it has been having engine problem 12 months after purchasing. i have contacted and interviewed other consumers with the same vehicle and issues. when i contacted land rover, they refused to do anything about it. the engine first over heats, it then has a cackling sound in the head, the service engine sign is always on. when i take it to the dealers for diagnostics, one employee said that these model vehicles come in for this problem very often. the vehicle was estimated to cost me over $5,000 to repair. this was not feasible being that there was a $70,000 payment left on the car. i had to turn it in to the bank but still stuck with a payment on a car that i can't even drive and was manufacturer's and dealers defect. *tr

After buying the car used @ 42,000 miles my 2002 land rover freelander was immediately diagnosed a month after intermittent starting problems with a blown head gasket and i needed a new engine. my car is a safety hazard as it stopped randomly of a highway and left me stranded. i am not the only person experiencing this blown head gasket problem as it is an engineering failure of this suv. land rover will not help, this is a disgrace that so many people have suffered from this problem and nothing has been done. *tr
