I have a 2002 land rover freelander. the car is more trouble than its worth. from the truck not starting, windows rolling up and down when they feel like it, engine coolant leaking, intake manifold problems, misdiagnosed from landrover, the locks don't work. the car basically starts when it wants to, it doesn't need a new starter, or spark plugs or an alternator. when driving the car wont accelerate as a car should it rides bumpy as if the engine is about to drop out. land rover wont help with anything because they say that the company who made the engines for the truck went out of business. many people complain about this truck. when i took the car to land rover to see what the ticking noise under the hood was they charged me 200 for a diagnostic and diagnosed the problem wrong. the major problems are the windows rolling down, that's a safety hazard when you have people in the car and have the window lock on yet the window still rolls down. the coolant leaking because once a land rover engine overheats you have to replace the whole engine. the locks don't work meaning you cant lock the vehicle also a safety hazard and the car doesn't accelerate past 30 mph sometimes and its not the transmission. *tr

I bought a 2002 land rover freelander as a 2nd owner of the vehicle from a local car dealership. since the purchase of the vehicle, i replaced a sunroof, a transmission, the brakes require constant replacement (more often than should be necessary), a passenger door window motor and the engine has been replaced once and now has blown again - i am unable to have this engine replaced #1 there are no more engines as the landrover dealer only made this defective model 1 year and there have been so many engines replaced by other owners that there are no other engines available. even if there were any engines i would not pay $10,000 to have another defective engine placed in this vehicle. there are over 1400 messages on the edmond forum.com outlining other peoples similar complaints. this defective vehicle has caused countless people's credit to be ruined, and financial hardship to untold families. i wonder why nothing has been done already with all the complaints that have been filed. landrover needs to reimburse these owners the money they have spent - such as myself on repairs, constantly in the shop and having to pay for rental vehicles. the local dealer was rude and had absolutely no sympathy and actually told me after bringing my vehicle in to them over and over that he will be glad when my husband and i get out from under this vehicle and admitted that this vehicle had been a problem for them. but... the dealer wouldn't even offer us a free oil change for all of our hardships. it is a shame. i hope eventually something is done before this company bellies up and files bankruptcy and all of these families that have been ruined will have no recourse for their financial woes as a result of this horrible situation. please help any way you can! *tr

Check engine light , ticking engine, antifreeze , oil leak, smelling coolant inside car and numerous other issues such as window regulator , wiper motor and rattling noises underneath car has been my complaints since feb 13,2008. parts were replaced that didn't correct the problem of the ticking engine, coolant leaks, smell of coolant inside car,and check engine light which always comes on a couple of hours after the dealer returns my car to me. car was towed from freeway due to breakdown on the way home 15 minutes after picking car up from madison dealership for engine repair. dealership stated that this was due to an oil seal/oil plug and it was not their fault although they just finished working on the engine. i did not have my car for a total of 30 days not including the prior visits where they took almost 2 weeks to diagnose the problem. i was charged for a rental car during this period. milwaukee dealership claimed they corrected the engine problem on 3 different visits which i paid $600.00 for a timing belt which never corrected the problem along with a $100.00 deductible for using the warranty. the parts replaced on the vehicle is as follows; manifold assy. motor assy for wiper blades, window regulator, timing belt and differential front mounting which did not resolve rattling noise underneath car. milwaukee dealership has also attempted to correct these same problems with no success. the coolant leak is still apparent and the check engine light is on again. the only thing the dealership can tell me is to monitor how many times i have to replace coolant. in the mean time, they have sent me home with a car that has a check engine light on and a disappearing coolant problem. i guess they will continue giving me the runaround until my warranty expires aug 2,2008 just as many others has reported they did to them. please help!!!!! *tr

I purchased a new 2002 freelander from land rover fort worth (tx) in january of 2002. while under warranty the car had numerous problems. my warranty expired in february of 2006 (4 years), but due to my low mileage 32,000 miles, i did not purchase an extended warranty. since february 2006, i have replaced the brakes for the 3rd time ($1000), had the engine overheat due to a faulty temp gauge which in turn blew the intake gasket ($1500), replaced the heater core again (pd. for by dealership), and am now faced with replacing the entire transmission ($5000). my transmission trouble began in early august 2006, when the car began to jerk and shudder unexpectedly. i immediately took the car into the dealership to check out the issue. they replaced the transmission temp sensor and said the care was fixed. i picked up the fixed car and 4 hours later the dangerous jumping/shuddering happened again. while attempting to drive the car back to the dealership, the problem grew worse and several warning lights lit up on the dash. i pulled over and the car was then flatbedded to the dealership. the next diagnosis was that an electronic computer chip (ecc) for the transmission needed to be replaced. the part was ordered and installed - but this did not fix the problem. the dealership now states that the entire transmission needs to be replaced for $5000. the car currently has 37,000 miles (highway and city miles only - no off-roading) and has been serviced on time and only at lr dealerships for routine maintenance. i find this entire situation unacceptable. *jb

2002 land rover freelander - 72,000 miles: replaced 3 window regulators last year. on my way to work one morning & hill descent light came on, f / 4 light flashes, and it is jerky / jumpy while driving. no one can figure out the problem - 3 land rover dealerships in 5 weeks. my car is now 100 miles away, i was told it was fixed, but when i got there it was still doing the same thing. they looked at it again & i was told i need a new transmission for $4800. for some reason, no one could pick up the problem with the testers. i loved my car but after reading about all the chronic problems i don't know what to do with it. plus, i owe about the same amount as the transmission! i will never buy a land rover again & they should be held responsible for all of these defective vehicles! *tr

2002 freelander with 65,000 miles - rear window regulator replaced at 55k; now the entire transmission needs replaced. land rover can no longer get the parts, so looking at a re-manufactured one at about $4,000. dealership closed down and there has been no help! *tr

Less than 50,000 miles landrover freelander gives f4 fault, will not shift out of 2nd gear. has overheating problem, sunroof died, dealer said needs new transmission, completely new wiring harness, new ecu, new door to fix window failure, and!!!!!!!!!!!! a new engine to fix the overheating problem that they tell me is a common thing, and they haven't seen any freelander's get over 65,000 miles without an engine and transmission replacement. luxury vehicle my ass. dealership gave me an 18,000 dollar repair estimate. i guess luxury means it costs a lot to drive not you have the luxury of driving without worrying about sitting on the side of the road in a 30,000 dollar piece of crap. read some forums online. all of these problems are happening everyday, and nothing is being done to make this luxury vehicle company make a better vehicle. i mean damn i should have bought a honda...... at least they have heated seats to keep my ass warm when i wait on the side of the road. *tr

Have had multiple problems with vehicle with replacements needed for the following items: sunroof assembly, brakes and rotors twice, coolant tank, coolant tank lid, intake manifold assembly, wiper switch, 2 vacuum hoses, window regulator, sunroof drain tubes and headliner. now, despite maintaining the recommended service schedule, we are going to have to have the engine replaced at 67k miles. the coolant is leaking into the oil and after having the head gaskets replaced and a cooler part replaced, the dealer now believes that there is a crack in the sleeve. there apparently is a back order on replacement engines so i will have to cough up $$$ to keep the oil drained and coolant filled until one is available. why should a $35,000 vehicle need an engine replaced at 67k miles? *tr

2002 land rover freelander with only 65,000 miles has had repairs that are beyond what should be normal, including a new transmission at 45,000 miles, two window regulators, multiple coolant leaks, blown head gasket. dangerous on the road, due to stalling out for no reason, and overheating constantly. have had to pay for multiple tows. today, engine overheated in mall parking lot, leaving me stranded. all coolant poured onto the ground. car needs a new engine at only 65,000 miles. *tr

My 2002 land rover freelander had an engine failure in september 2006. this is a common problem with this make of vehicle and cost me $6,849.61 to replace since i was out of warranty. other popular problems with this vehicle are problems with the window motors. my sunroof and two backdoor windows would not operate properly. i could only pay to repair the backdoor windows at the expense of $904.88. also, the drivers side door lock does not function properly, but i was not able to have that fixed. *tr

Land rover freelander hse 2002: at 70,000 miles, transmission halts, seizing, rapid rpm jumps; less than one month later, the transmission completely died. inoperable car towed and transmission rebuilt at private shop. five miles from shop after pickup, car seized and died. now, an additional repair of the transfer case, which we were told caused the transmission failure. now, service engine soon light on; battery keeps dying. rapid depreciation, frequent repairs of brakes, brake pads, headlights, etc. complained to manufacturer 2/23/2007. car inoperable as of this date. don't know what to do -- owe more than it's worth, cannot get full nada/kbb trade in value...frustrated and disappointed. and out of money. *jb

In dec '05 i had the right rear window of a 2002 land rover freelander fail to operate. it was two days before the warranty expired, and covered. in november '06 the left rear window failed to operate. the vehicle on has 43k miles but is now out of warranty due to years. both were a result of a poor cable operating system, and is a known common problem according to the land rover dealer. *jb

This is about transmission failure for 2002 landrover/freelander. keeping the car in best shape and maintaining on schedule, still the transmission went bad with less than 40,000 mileage. car warranty is for 50k or 4 years. unfortunately, the warranty was up in january 2006. engine has special noise and car is coming apart. window does not roll up and down, rear seat got stuck and wouldn't get its position. one problem after another, but the main one is the transmission. *jb

2002 land rover freelander experienced a vehicle fire.*mr the consumer addressed dealership several times, land rover told him that the vehicle did not meet the mexico lemon law guidelines and they were not in any position to repurchase the vehicle. the consumer also complained about other problems with the vehicle such as electrical problems, the rear passenger door did not unlock with the remote, drivers rear seat did not fold, the rear window did not go up when it was cold and the drivers seat was squeaky. the consumer had made numerous complaints to the dealership before the fire occurred. *cb *jb

I purchased my 2002 landrover in aug 02. since then it has been in the shop for over 30 days for repair work to the stereo, sunroof, throttle assemby, tranction control warning light, passenger window breaking, etc. however, i was most disturbed to learn that landrover is finding out, as quoted by two dealerships, that the breaks need to be replaced every 12000 miles becasue the vehicle is too heavy for the pads used during manufacturing. landrover north america has provided no relief in this matter and maintains that it is my personal driving habits that are responsible and this is a normal wear and tear item. i have owned several other suvs and have never had to replace breaks even up to 70,000 miles driving on moutain roads. i believe landrover na has a personnel responsibility to disclose the additional cost of $300 that each customer has to pay every 12k miles for break in addition to the $350 they have to pay for their scheduled service every 12k miles. i doubt they would sell another vehicle. even the service manager at the dealership that services my car admitted he wouldn't by one either.

Our 2002 landrover was purchased used and the mileage started at 3,500. it was a show room car. when the mileage reached mid 40,000 miles the check engine light came on. we heard strange noises coming from engine , and the car had trouble accelerating. we brought it to the dealer, and made it so that the check engine light went away. however, the car still did not accelerate well, making it difficult to drive on freeway. after a while, the light came on again. we brought the car to dealer again, and once more they worked on it, but the results were similar. when we passed the 50,000 mileage mark the car started to fall apart rapidly. the transmission went out, the rear door didn't open from outside, the sun roof broke, and the starter also broke. this all happened very fast. when we went to dealer, they said we were no longer covered under the warranty, even though we bought the car at 3,500 miles to start with. so we thought that we would be covered until 53,500. therefore, we had to pay for all the repairs ourselves, and the transmission alone cost us $5000 to repair. we are worried that the car will continue to break down the longer we have it and we don't know what to do.*ak

I bought a freelander in 2002. it was brand new. i have had so many troubles with the vehicle. the one that is currently being worked as a lemon law case is the sun roof. i have had it break for the 5th time now. they have replaced it once and swapped parts the other 3 times and still nothing will fix it. i am currently working with my local state office of consumer affairs to try and remedy this issue. they currently are working on the 5th breakage today. not sure what they will do to try and fix that issue. not to the mention the breaking system that is a nightmare. i had to replace the brakes at 30000 after they dug into the rotors. the downhill decent light comes on with the traction control light for no reason. the brain for the cruise control went out. this car is a constant headache. *ak
