In response to an information request (ir) letter sent by the office of defects investigation (odi), ford stated that the primary cause for the majority of the reported front differential/drive shaft failures is a misalignment of the joint between the two components.certain levels of misalignment may over time cause an uneven wear of the splines.continued wear of the splines may result in a shearing of the splines and the inability of the driveshaft to transfer torque to the front differential. to address the issue in the field, ford initiated a service campaign in june 2003 to correct the misalignment issue and, if necessary, replace the front drive shaft and/or differential.the service campaign covered model year (my) 2003 and my 2004 vehicles built from april 18, 2002 through july 3, 2003.in production, ford introduced a change to the lubricating grease of the joint in february 2003 and a change to the assembly plant alignment process in july 2003 to address the misalignment and wear issue. odi identified one crash related to the alleged defect.the crash involved a subject vehicle being struck in the rear after becoming disabled by a front differential/driveshaft failure and pulling to the side of the road. this preliminary evaluation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea07-012) to further assess the scope, frequency and safety consequences of front differential/driveshaft failures in the subject vehicle population.

While driving on i-75 the vehicle would not accelerate and shift gears. it started stalling and would do the same thing after the engine was turned off and on again. we drove 50-55 mph on a highway with 18 wheelers careening around us. took the vehicle to the dealership, we were told that it needed a new transmission. no explanation was given as to why with a vehicle barely 5 years old and only had 42,000 miles accrued. we took it to a private transmission shop and they found the defect. there was a crack on the reverse piston which land rover was apparently aware of because an updated piston was manufactured. all we would like was a refund for the repairs done but we were told no because we didn't go to the dealership. if it weren't for the private shop, we wouldn't have known about the defect in the first place. i still have the piston and the crack is clearly visible. *ak

On the evening of 24th jan 2007 i was leaving the motorway to join another major road, when i lost all drive to my 2002 range rover. there was no indication or noise leading up to the loss of drive, and then there was a loud grinding noise and the computer instructed me to engage neutral. i engaged neutral and coasted luckily enough for 100 yards to a pull in off the road, and awaited my aa recovery to recover the vehicle. unknowingly my car had missed the last service by 6,000 miles, and the manufacturers warranty has expired. however i have taken the matter up direct with landrover and explained that the main dealer has allays serviced the vehicle, and usually gave a telephone call/letter to advise the vehicle would need a service but had not done so on this occasion. after much pushing landrover are only contributing 33% towards the repair, therefore i have instructed the garage to return the parts to me for an independent engineers report to be carried out. as i believe this is an endemic fault and all rr should be recalled and new propshaft and diff parts fitted. my partner who had a new rr three months after mine had the problem 6 months after delivery of the car. *nm
