The level of severity of the headlamp problem with this vehicle should be at the highest concern. hundreds of people have made complaints and requests regarding this problem and there has been nothing to rectify it. when these headlamps are on at night there is no illumination -- not little illumination -- virtually none. how a problem of this nature can receive little attention nor an explanation as to why a test hasn't even been requested is beyond any reasonable understanding. if drastic visual impairment is not reason enough to warrant action from the nhtsa then reason for the nhtsa's very existence should equally stand in question. *tr

Car is unusable at night due to poor headlight design/build quality. plastic headlight lenses require regular repolishing to remove haze. chrome inside headlights has burned off from the heat of the oem bulbs, resulting in virtually no light output on road. will require rechroming. this is the 2nd set of oem headlights to display these symptoms on this car. *tr

Headlamps in these vehicles are non-functioning. they need to be replaced with the 1996 hid system. night visibility is zero. the driver cannot see at night. this car clearly should have been recalled for this matter given the amount of content written about its famous headlamp failure. there is no vehicle with poorer headlamp illumination. it is very dangerous to drive these cars at night. *jb. updated 01/02/08. *lj upated 12/12/07

The headlights on my 1993 lincoln mark viii are basically shot. the lights themselves work fine however the actual headlight housing itself is not. the plastic lense has yellowed pretty bad and the relflective surface inside of the headlight is ruined. i find it very hard to see over 15 feet in front of the car at night and unfortunately, i do not have another vehicle to drive at night or the funds to purchase a new vehicle or even new headlights.

Headlights on my 1993 lincoln mark viii are very dangerous. the low beams are so dim that i am forced to drive with the headlights set on high-beams. the reflective material in the headlight assembly is to blame. it is burned off and dull. i'm not the only first generation mark viii owner with this problem. it seems to affect all models from 93 to 96. *nm

I am the owner of a 1993 lincoln mark viii. all mark viii's built as 1993 and 1994 models, and base 1995 and 1996 models are flawed with headlights that, over time, become very unsafe due to design flaws. the low beams become very dim as the reflective material inside the headlight wears due to normal use. i am a member of several lincoln clubs, with many owners experiencing this common problem. some even resort to driving with their high beams on at all times, which can cause another problem altogether as it may blind other drivers on the road. this problem makes night driving in these cars very difficult, and in the interest of safety, i, along with many other mark viii owners, feel this issue should be investigated and resolved. thank you for your time and interest in this matter.*ak

I own a 1993 lincoln mark viii and the headlights are terrible. it's only a matter of time before dim light output will cause an accident. i believe the design of the headlight assembly is flawed which causes the plastic to burn and the reflectors to be damaged. ford should replace the assembly or upgrade the mark viii's with the bad design to hid lights. *nm

This is a complaint of a nature of failing headlights on 1993 lincoln mark viii headlights . the headlights on this model are unsafe as all 1993-1996 first generations mark viii are.after many hours of research on the internet , and the many complaints iv'e since seen i believe ford knew this problem exsisted. these cars are very dangerous to drive at night. and there seems to be no fix for there problem buying new headlights from ford, our only option is very expensive and no solution to the problem since new ones fail shortley after being installed. *ak

The headlights on my 1993 lincoln mark viii are virtually useless. with the standard replacement bulbs i have about ten feet visibility from the driver's seat. this is with the low beams and i have about twenty to thirty feet visibility with the high beams. i upgraded the high beams to a one hundred watt bulb to get up to about fifty feet visibility. this gives me about two and a half car lengths visibility at night. when i am meeting on coming traffic at night, all i can do is to try and not hit the headlights that are in the other lane. the problem with the headlights is that the reflective material inside the light assembly burns away after about six months of use. now, i can not afford to replace the assemblies twice a year and shouldn't have to. i have purchased additional driving lights to aid in being able to see the road. they are not very attractive on my car, but what choice do i have? it appears that i have purchased a daytime driving only car. i currently use a message board on the internet that is taylored to the mark viii. it's web site is: www.markviii.org .there are thousands of members on this board that all complain about the same problem. please go to the message board and do a search for headlights. i am affraid of being caught out in the dark for fear of causing an accident or running over somebody. by the way, all of the people from the markviii site that have written ford about this problem always get a reply saying that we have never heard of this problem. i also want to point out that starting the fourth year that the mark viii was manufactured, ford started using the hid lights on these cars. in my own opinion, i think ford recognized the problem and applied a fix. now they don't want to own up to it. this form askes me for an incident date. there has not yet been an incident related to my very own car. i'm sure that somebody out there has had an accident related to poor visibility. so i am just going to put in today's date.

1993-1996 lincoln mark viii headlights are all faulty. they turn yellow after about 6 months of purchase, these units are not cheap, about $800 for a new headlight system. i constantly drive with my bright lights on and i still cant even see the lines on the road. try driving with your headlights off and thats how the mark viii's are. this is a big saftey issue too which ford should have recalled this a long time ago. its sick how they dont want to recall it because of the money issue, but it can and will save lifes. please write me a email back showing the status of this debate to excursion7227@aol.com

The headlights are poorly designed. high beams must be used at night to help with seeing. it still fails to provide enough light to see more than 10-15 feet in front. it is impossible to drive at night while it is raining. if the nhtsa checks the lincolns of distinction web page, many owners have complained about this manufacturer defect. owners should have the equipment replaced due to the danger involved or the manuafacturer should design a new replacement. if this matter is not taken into consideration, it may lead to another case much like the one surrounding the tires installed on previous ford suv's.*ak

The low beam headlights on my mark vlll have never been very bright as the car ages the head light are going dimmer and dimmer ,this is due to a design flaw in the headlight housing the bulbs produce so much heat and with no place for the heat to escape the sealed unit the heat from the bulb is burning the reflective coating of the bulb reflector and with a black spot in side the housing the headlights are producing less and less light the more they are in use ,it is getting to the point were it is unsafe to drive at nite .thank you for looking in to this matter. *ak

The headlights on the early lincoln mark 8s are terrible, the inside of the housing discolors, clouding the lens from the inside and turning the reflective portion orange, brown, or black. these are expensive to replace, ford/lincoln seems to not want to acknowledge that they might be at fault. the headlights are lucky if they are shining at 30% of their designed illumination. almost everyone witha 1993 through 1996 model has some amount of this failure in their car. check the lincolns of distinction website, login and ask for a response. you will be surprised at the number of complaints about this one item. thanks for your attention and concern, thomas mote. *ak

The headlights on my 1993 lincoln mark viii are the worst headlights i have ever experienced. the light emission from them is way below normal. the headlights are starting to turn yellow. i have had many close calls with deer because of my lack of vision at night and it really scares me to drive in darker areas because i know how insufficent the headlights are. i have to travel back and forth from detroit to the south side of chicago many times and driving at night requires extra specail attension because at highway speeds your limited vision is not enough to travel safely. i have driven many other cars in my lifetime and i have had much cheaper and inferior cars with headlights that make my cars look like a candle flame. due to the inferior design of the headlight assembly, putting higher wattage bulbs into them will only melt the reflective material inside the assembly. this has to be the most poorly designed headlight system i have ever encountered.*ak

The front headlight assemblies for the 1993-1996 lincoln mark viii's are of extremely poor quality with very low light output. this is a known issue with this first generation of the mark viii family. lincoln updated the second generation of mark viii's (1997-1998) with a high intensity beam headlamp, that sufficiently increased the amount of light projected from the headlamps. i perform a fair amount of driving on interstate highways in phoenix in the early evening timeframe, at highway speeds of 65 mph. the low light output of these headlamps on the mark viii makes for what i and many other mark viii owners feel is an unsafe driving condition. obstacles in the road are difficult to see in a manner that would allow me to safely maneuver around them, should the need arise. further, while driving through residential areas after dark, the dim light projected from the headlamps does not provide sufficient lighting to safely make myself aware of neighborhood children, pets, joggers, etc. i am very concerned for my safety and the safety of others due to the poor quality of light produced by these headlamps, which are factory installed on all 1993-1996 lincoln mark viii's. i feel it is only a matter of time before myself, my passengers, or a pedestrian will come to harm due to the cars inability to illuminate objects after dark in a manner that is safely expected for all vehicles traveling on the road. thank you for your time in this matter. *ak

The problem is with the weak stock headlights. they make very little difference when its on and off. i feel for a $40,000 car i should have some effective headlights. on dark streets with no street lights it is very difficult to see and as a result i must drive extremly slow and hold up traffic, due the ability of my headlights to show me the way. i have seen flash lights more effective. i feel if my headlights can't guide me through a dark street then it'll only put my life and everyone's life around me at the time in danger. i would go to a shop and add new lights on my own but i feel this is the company's problem that they should deal with. they make millions a year and yet they can't put descent headlights in. they talk about satisfying the customer, but how is putting bad headlights on my car satisfying me.*ak

The low beam headlights are very dim, dangerously so. the reflectors lose their brightness with time and the headlights, which were very poor to begin with, become worthless. it is often necessary to use the high beams to drive by in poorly lighted or rural areas. this is dangerous to other drivers, but the low beams are really that bad.*ak

All 1993-1996 mark viii's were built with very low output low beam lights. these lights make it very hazardous to drive at night. the headlamps are the number one complaint of mark viii owners and many have resorted to aftermarket products to ensure their own safety. this is a major problem ford should recognize and rectify immediately.

I have been aware of this since i purchased this vehicle. headlights on this vehicle, and several other mark viii's i am personally familiar with are very dim, to the point of being dangerous. online investigation shows many mark viii owners have the same complaint. the only option ford/lincoln offers is an upgrade to the newer hid system, for nearly $1000.00. not a good option for a design failure.*ak

The first incident happened while i was on the on-ramp to the mass. turnpike at 11:00 p.m. i was driving approx. 35 mph and my headlights shut off as well as the dashboard lighting. i immediately hit my brakes so that the cars behind me were aware of my existence. it seemed like they were off forever, in reality it was probably about 20 seconds. it proceeded to happen as i drove the speed limit on the pike, and many times thereafter. it came to the point that i would not drive at night unless absolutely necessary. i proceeded to look into vehicle recall information, because to me this is definate recall stuff, this is not normal wear and tear of an automobile. i was not surprised to see in the consumer guide, that it was in fact a recall on 1993, lincoln mark viii vehicles. however, what i was surprised about was the treatment i received from lincoln. i gave them the information, as well as the recall #98v009000, they told me that recalls are vehicle specific and that they would need my vin . *after providing them with this information, i was told that the headlamp recall did not pertain to my car. well, obviously there has been some kind of a mistake!?!????? i am not understanding the logic or reasoning in this, let me get this straight, o.k.: there is a recall for headlamp failure on 1993, lincoln mark viii's, i own a 1993, lincoln mark viii, i am having headlight failure, but my vehicle is not listed as part of the recall??????? well then shouldn't it be? what is the explanation then for the problem and why does lincoln fail to take responsibility and reinburse me. my life was in danger until i could get the funds to repair this problem, and lincoln just simply keeps saying i am sorry mam, there is nothing we can do, your car is not part of the recall i ask , well there is definately an error. and what can i do now? they gave me a couple of toll free numbers to call, but no-one is being helpful, and no-one can jlogically answer my question.
