Defect SummaryVehicle description: light duty pickup trucks and multi-purpose passenger vehicles. if the automatic transmission shift cable assembly was not fully attached to the steering column bracket, the shift cable assembly can come out of the bracket. the vehicle operator would then not be able to shift the transmission from one of the drive gear positions into the park position even though the gear shift selector would indicate park.
Consequence SummaryThe condition would not allow a disengagement of the transmission from the park position or affect proper neutral start switch operation. unintended vehicle movement could occur if the parking brake was not set.
Corrective SummaryDealers will make the proper attachment of the transmission shift control cable to the steering column bracket and add a tie strap to that connection.

 Tl-the contact owns a 1998 lincoln navigator. while the vehicle was parked on a decline in a parked lot the vehicle rolled out of the parking lot into the street and crashed into another vehicle that was stopped at a light. slight damage was done to the other vehicle. the contact stated when you put the vehicle in park the gear shifter stays in park but the vehicle will move. she stated to prevent the vehicle from moving in park the emergency brakes has to be engaged. no police report was filed and no one was injured. the vehicle has not been repaired. the vehicle was purchased used on 11/8/2003. she referenced recall 97v171000, power train:automatic transmission:gear position indication (prndl) and was advised by the manufacture that the recall work had already been performed. the contact stated she open a case with the manufacture. the failure and current mileage were 163,000. vwb

 I have a 1998 lincoln navigator that is exhibiting issues with the transmission gear shift. there is currently a recall on certain vehicles but ford is telling me that my vehicle is not affected. i'm wondering how the same year and model affected in the recall that is now exhibiting the same issues, is not included in the recall? it is ford campaign # 97s86. *tr

 This is a very serious safety problem -danger ! i have no vehicle and ford motor co. refuses to help. what if there had been a child in front of my car. it starts in reverse and drive. the vehicle was started in drive, accelerated forward and hit a tree before i could stop it. please investigate as soon as possible. someone could have been seriously hurt or killed.*ak

 While driving at highway speeds the transmission on my navigator went out and caused me to almost be killed on the ohio turnpike. this happened 3 times and all the dealer could do was insult me. i hope that no one else has this problem b/c if it weren't for my driving ability i would be sending this from the grave!!!!*ak

 While driving in rain at 60 mph car started to hydroplane, 360 in road, tires have been replaced since the latest incident. during any rain complete traction with the car is lost. dealer contacted, and are aware of the problem, but cannot duplicate the problem. *ak

 Vehicle experienced traction control problem causing vehicle to spin 180 degrees.(attorney for consumer).

 While turning a corner in the rain the vehicle did a 360 degree turn around and ended up facing oncoming traffic. also when the vehicle takes off on an incline the tires just spin and the vehicle does not move. manufacturer says . *ak *nlm

 In attempt to fix problem dealer balanced tires, replaced tires and channged drive shaft twice. lincoln customer assistances said there was something not right but could do nothing. the viabration is becoming more violent with age and i am concerned that the viabrating part come loose and that myself or a passen be injured. ford engineers know there is a problem. fix the problem, explain the problem vouch ang for the saftey of the vehicle when operating at 62 mph a the viabration is present??
