Defect SummaryVehicle description: passenger vehicles. the speed control deactivation switch can develop a resistive short in the electrical circuit that could potentially result in an underhood fire. a fire is possible both when the vehicle is running and when the vehicle engine is off. also, the short could disable the speed control system or cause the brake light fuse to open.

 The car had been driven on a trip of approximatel 450 miles and was then parked in our driveway where it sat without being entered, cranked or driven for 2 weeks. at around midnight, while my family was sleeping, a neighbor came beating on our door to tell us that the car was on fire. at that point, the fire was completely involved under the hood of the car, with smoke getting into the cabin of the car. the front tires melted to the ground. the car was a total loss. my husband was able to quickly move another car parked nearby but it had slight paint blistering on the body nearest the fire due to the heat.

 Dt*: the contact stated while the vehicle was parked, there were two loud bangs. the contact looked into the driveway, and saw that the vehicle was on fire. the flames were located on the front end of the vehicle. the vehicle burned completely, and the heat from the fire burned the side of a recreational vehicle which was parked alongside the first vehicle. there was a police report and a fire report processed at the scene. the manufacturer was notified, who stated that there was a statute of limitations on nhtsa recall # 99v124000 which pertains to the electrical system. the vehicle was not included in the recall due to the vin.

 Steering wheel shaft ignition lock, does not return to neutural position after the start operation, thus causing jumping or arcing electricity and a misfiring of the engine. the key must be rotated bac to the drive position in order to stop preignition. a fix was tried by installing a new lock, but that failed as the return spring is not part of the lock mechanism.

 I parked 1992 lincoln town car executive series @ work @ 7:30 am on 6/1/05. about 4:30 pm on the same day, office employees notified me my car was on fire. car was not driven or touched the entire period of elapsed time from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. i noticed the usa today website dated 6/2/05 with an article of 1992 town cars catching on fire becasue of cruise control switch malfunction manufactured by texas instruments and ford motor co. car appears to be totaled although local ford dealer has not confirmed this yet.
