Defect SummaryOn certain pickup trucks, passenger vehicles, sport utility vehicles, and motor homes chassis, the speed control deactivation switch may, under certain conditions, leak internally and then overheat, smoke, or burn.
Consequence SummaryThis could result in an underhood fire.
Corrective SummaryDealers will install a fused wiring harness. owners of the passenger cars included in this campaign will be instructed to return their vehicles to their dealers to have the speed control deactivation switch disconnected as an interim repair. as soon as repair parts are available (expected october 2007), owners will be instructed to return to the dealers for installation of a fused wiring harness. the recall began on august 13, 2007, and mailing completed by september 19, 2007. owners may contact ford at 1-888-222-2751.

 The fars data shows that the risk of fire from impact in all directions in the subject vehicles is the same as all other sedans.the subject vehicles are not over represented with respect to the risk of fire in real-world high-energy crashes.a further discussion of issues related to post crash fires in the subject vehicles is set out in the closing report for sq 01-014 and that report is in the docket for this petition.after reviewing the petition and its supporting materials, as well as information furnished by ford and gm, and information within the agency's possession from previous investigations and other related actions,nhtsa has concluded that futher investigation concerning post-crash fires in the subject vehicles is not likely to lead to a decision that the vehicles contain a safety defect.

 Tl*the contact owns a 1994 lincoln town car. the contact stated that there was a recall on the speed control switch, which caused his vehicle to catch fire. the switch was never replaced because the contact never received a recall notice for the cruise control switch. after the fire, the mechanic stated that the switch was the cause of the failure. the vehicle was parked and unoccupied at the time of the fire. the fire department extinguished the flames and filed a report. the nhtsa campaign id number was unknown. the failure mileage was 180,000.

 Tl*the contact owns a 1994 lincoln town car. while driving 70 mph, the contact attempted to disengage the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. the feature would not disengage and the vehicle suddenly accelerated and caught fire. ford motor company stated that they would send a letter within 7-10 days. ford would not inform him if the vin was included in nhtsa campaign id number 07v336000 (vehicle speed control) and ford recall number 05s28. the representative gave him a website to enter in the vin and it was discovered that the vehicle was included in the recall. the vehicle caught fire 30 minutes after it was purchased. the fire and police departments arrived and filed a report. the vehicle was destroyed. the powertrain was unknown. the failure and current mileages were 187,000.

 Tl*the contact owns a 1994 lincoln town car. the contact received a recall notice in september of 2007 for the vehicle speed control. he notified the dealer in november and december, but was informed on both occasions that the parts were unavailable. ford motor company stated that the fairy godmother has not yet given them a date and it could be anywhere from 6-9 months thereafter. he stated that due to adverse weather conditions and the luxury of having the feature, this was a total inconvenience. the cruise control deactivation switch was disconnected. there had been no failure to date. the recall number was unknown. the current mileage was 103,989.

 Tl*the contact owns a 1994 lincoln town car. after being parked in the driveway for a couple of hours, the vehicle caught fire and exploded. the montgomery county fire investigator stated that the vehicle's wiring harness, which was near the fuel line, was the cause of the failure. the fire engulfed the engine compartment and the vehicle was destroyed. a fire report was filed. the contact's vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign id number 07v336000 (vehicle speed control); however, she was never notified of the recall prior to the fire. she fears that other people may be experiencing similar failures and are not being notified. the current and failure mileages were 88,000.

 While cruising at speed, usually on interstate - vehicle encounters slight hill. transmission attempts to shift and transmission disengages, or transmission downshifts violently and unexpectedly. this causes the car to accelerate rapidly challenging the driver for control of the vehicle. transmission in for diagnostic twice at l/m dealers, once at aamco - diagnostics/tests show no defect. lincoln mercury will do maintenance cycles but refuses to admit/engage problem. *ak
