98V322000FORD MOTOR COMPANY V (Vehicle)17500001/18/1999ODIFORD MOTOR COMPANY12/16/199812/18/1998
Defect SummaryVehicle description: certain 1996-1999 ford crown victoria police, fleet, natural gas, and 1996-1999 lincoln town car limousine vehicles that were produced with a lower control arm ball joint containing a one piece bearing; and 1990-1996 ford crown victoria police, fleet, and ngv vehicles and 1990-1996 lincoln town car limousine vehicles that have been serviced with either a ball joint containing the one-piece bearing or a front lower control arm containing a ball joint with a one-piece bearing. the one-piece bearing within the lower control arm ball joint can weaken slowly during use and eventually crack. this could result in separation of the ball and cap of the joint, allowing the control arm to drop to the ground.
Consequence SummaryIf this occurs while the vehicle is moving, reduced steering control could occur, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the lower control arm ball joints (2).

Traveling at 65 mph on freeway the car began to wander without steering wheel input--the steering wheel had one inch free play from either side of center. had car put on rack--checked front end (nothing abnormal found), but with wheels on ground the steering wheel can be moved one inch in either direction from center without wheel movement-mechanic suspects defective steering sector. ford dealer inspected car and found same condition existed. dealer notified ford, but no corrective action taken. this condition is not good--car wants to drift all over the road and and has loose steering--speed sensitive steering w/select steering effort has not effect on condition. presently i do not trust the vehicle. it is a dangerous condition.*ak

I have a 1995 lincoln town car. i was driving in downtown portland, in stop and go traffic. i was making a right hand turn when the right front of the car just fell to the ground. the lower ball joint had separated from the lower control arm. there are recalls for this, but it only covers limo, or commercially used vehicles. i had the car towed back to my home while i find out what can be done. nothing has been repaired yet.

Tl*the contact owns a 1995 lincoln town car. whenever the contact reduced the vehicle's speed to turn, he would hear a popping sound coming from the front end on the driver's side. the failure was noticed while driving 10 mph. the vehicle was driven to the dealer for routine oil changes, but the mechanic never stated what caused the noise. approximately one month later, he drove the vehicle to the dealer because he received a recall notice for nhtsa campaign id number 07v336000 (vehicle speed control). the vehicle was repaired. he informed the dealer of the popping noise when he took the vehicle in for the recall repairs. when he retrieved the vehicle, the mechanic informed him that the upper and lower ball joints were defective and needed to be replaced. the vehicle has not been repaired. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in any recalls for the ball joints; therefore, they were not liable for the repairs. the current mileage was 95,000 and failure mileage was 88,000.
While vehicle is being driven at high speed front end pulls to the right, cause unknown. dealer cannot identify problem. please give any further details.*ak

While i was driving through a parking lot the front right lower ball joint on my 1995 lincoln town car broke and caused the lower control arm to fall to the ground. no one was injured only because of the fact that i was traveling under 15 mph. when the ball joint failed the car came to an immediate stop. if i had been on the highway instead of a parking lot, i can only imagine the damage/injuries that would have occurred. *jb

The passenger side lower ball joint failed--the ball separated from the socket. there are recalls for similar vehicles nhtsa:98v322000 and nhtsa:96v135000 since this vehicle has the same ball joints it ought to included within these recalls--but it is not--why? or can it be included within these recalls? ford company denies any liability for the problem, as of this date. *jb
