After being parked in parking lot - engine turned off, no radio playing, etc. we started the vehcle up, backed up, braked, put in drive and accelerated at which time the vehicle immediately accelerated out of control. brakes would not stop the car. the car continued to accelerate faster and faster. we ran over a couple of islands, pulled fire hydrant out of the ground, ran into a wall, vehicle continued to accelerate and it seered from the wall, accelerating faster we knocked 6 parked cars out of the way like they were boxes all the while braking to no avail vehicle continuing to accelerate faster headed across the parking lot toward a chain link fence we threw the gear shift into park about the same time we hit the fence. the vehicle balked and came to stop in about 50 feet in an ajacent parking lot on the other side of the fence ripping about 50 feet of the fence with it. front end demolished, radiator steaming, engine still running, ripped undecarriage flattened tires from rims. totalled the car. and air bags did not deploy. only injuries were bruises and sprains and emotional problems. praise god. 2 adults and 3 children were in the car. i know the car malfunctioned and lincoln has a responsibilty to the public to investigate, determine cause & correct. look at the insurance report investigative report. they tell me it cost too much to investigate the cause since there were no severe injuries, .there are many similar incidents on the internet and some not so fortunate. there is a safety issue here and the public has the right to have these accidents investigated. the truma of being in an out of control vehicle is devestating and lincoln has a public liability to make that determination to save future lives. 2 adults and 3 children are still emotionally disturbed about this. are also similar incidents wtih other ford products. please respond.

I have experienced sudden unexpected acceleration on my 2005 lincoln town car. this has happened many times. the car's computer was examined by 2 lincoln dealers and no errors ware found. just yesterday, i was driving and had my foot off both the accelerator pedal and the brake as i was coasting in traffic when the car suddenly accelerated and i had to press on the brake to stop this. i then took the car immediately to my lincoln dealer who could find nothing wrong again. do you have any information on problems with the electronic throttle control or any other part such as cruise control, etc., that could cause this problem and has this problem been reported to you by others? i met another 2005 lincoln town car owner who said he had the same problem and i also found an article on the internet by a 3rd 2005 lincoln town car owner with the same exact problem who also said the his dealer told him that the car's computer showed no errors so there was nothing that they could do about the problem. *jb

On september 4th, 2005 at approximately 2:30 pm, my assigned car, a 2005 lincoln continental, crashed into a hertz ford taurus and a hertz volvo. was the accident my fault or was it caused by a defective car? i was among transporters dropped off at the cherry hill, new jersey hilton hotel. our assignment was to pick-up cars and drive them to the hertz office at mcguire air force base. i found my car, a 2005 lincoln continental, buckled up, checked the mileage, started the engine and turned the lights on. i put the car into reverse and the car accelerated uncontrollably into two parked cars. all cars had severe damage. i don't believe (and am willing to take a lie detector test to prove it) i was in any way responsible for the accident because first of all, i have been employed for almost a year as a bordentown, nj hertz transporter and have a perfect driving record, with no violations or warnings of any kind. secondly, the parking lot attendant said he thought i had my brakes and accelerator engaged at the same time. i don't know how this was possible unless the car was accelerating by itself and overpowered the brakes. thirdly, acceleration marks on the pavement were continuous, unbroken and had a uniform consistency in color and width, showing that nothing i did had any effect on the backward acceleration. finally, i don't think anyone can reproduce these marks (approximately 33 feet long) with the same automobile unless they speed the engine to its maximum rpm in neutral and then slam the transmission into reverse. i obviously did not do this. somebody must investigate the mechanical, electrical and electronics of the 2005 lincoln continental that rocketed backward into two parked cars. i want to see this report, since i was the driver. mike meir, city manager for hertz at bordentown, nj 609-298-8585 can refer to the accident report, give you the vin number or any additional information you may require.*jb

I took delivery of my new town car and on the short drive home, i rear ended a car stopped at a traffic light. i saw the light was red and began by stop normally and then realized that the car was not stopping. i pressed harder on the brakes and the engine revved faster, the anti-lock brakes would grab and release and then i struck the stopped car. the impact did not set off the air bags but did considerable damage to the bumpers of both cars. i thought perhaps the accelerator had stuck and took my car in to the dealer, but they could find nothing wrong. apparently my foot was on the brake and the accelerator when i tried to stop. a friend who has the same model town car as i have said that this happened to him 4 times when his car was new. my son's wife has a 2004 expedition and he says that he hates to drive it because the brake and accelerator are too close together. another friend expressed the same concern. my nephew has a 2005 ford diesel pickup and i am told that he was backing up to a dock and hit the accelerator along with the brake and slammed into the dock breaking his tail light. this vehicle and the others i have mentioned have pedals that adjust in and out together and in all positions the height is the same on both, after the slack is taken up on the brake. i had a 1997 town car and the distance between the brake and accelerator is almost twice as wide on the '97 i reported this to ford and i do not like their response. i will quote one sentence that sums up the short letter - - we suggest that you follow the direction of your insurance carrier, which has the right to file a subrogation claim against ford motor company if it chooses to pursue the matter. i sincerely hope that something can be done to force ford to correct this engineering error. *jb
