STRUCTURE - BODY | |||

Tractor trailer turns left across highway. 2000 ford taurus strikes left side of 1992 lufkin trailer, underrides the trailer, severely compromising the occupant capsule. side underride injures at least 1900 people per year, killing at least 77 per year, likely much higher. a simple guard along the sides of trailers would prevent compromise of the occupant capsule in impacts at speeds otherwise survivable. the guard can be covered in such a manner that it improves the fuel efficiency, more than offsetting any loss of fuel efficiency due to extra weight, and saves more money than the cost of the guard itself. *tr |
