Defect SummarySome steel kingpins supplied by custom forge, for use on certain van trailers, have been determined to possess inadequate heat treatment.
Consequence SummaryComplete fracture of the kingpin can occur resulting in detachment of the kingpin from a trailer and unintended separation of tractor and trailer, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the trailers to verify the kingpin brand and heat lot and determine if the kingpin is cracked. customers will be advised to remove from service any trailers discovered to have cracked kingpins. owner notification is began november 24, 2004. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact lufkin at 1-800-324-3812.

STRUCTURE - BODY

Tractor trailer turns left across highway. 2000 ford taurus strikes left side of 1992 lufkin trailer, underrides the trailer, severely compromising the occupant capsule. side underride injures at least 1900 people per year, killing at least 77 per year, likely much higher. a simple guard along the sides of trailers would prevent compromise of the occupant capsule in impacts at speeds otherwise survivable. the guard can be covered in such a manner that it improves the fuel efficiency, more than offsetting any loss of fuel efficiency due to extra weight, and saves more money than the cost of the guard itself. *tr
