My 2000 mazda 626 (automatic) began jerking during acceleration. while accelerating there is an initial pause and then the car jerks as speed increases. it seems as though the car is having difficulty switching gears. within 10 minutes the check engine light came on. i immediately went to a repair shop. they indicated the error codes suggest there is something wrong with the transmission converter and that i will need to replace or rebuild the transmission. estimated costs for this are from $3100 to almost $4000. *tr

I own a 2000 mazda 626 with only 90,000 miles. i have been stranded several times in this car and spent over $3000 parts and labor. i had to replace the catalytic converter, several sensors, master break cylinder, cv boots, and rack and pinion. now i am having trouble with the transmission and the ac. the mechanic says i need to rebuild the trans and replace the ac compressor. this is another $3000 or more. i am very disappointed in this situation. i plead with you to take action on this. i have checked several web forums and found similar problems. please, please make mazda accountable for building such bad cars. fyi, i am very, very diligent in general maintenance. thanks for your time. chris. *nm

Engine check light and battery light came on, came on five times, the first time dealer replaced broken idler pulley belt bolt, second time dealer replaced alternator, third time dealer replaced ignition switch, fourth time transmission range sensor was replaced, and fifth time clutch pedal switch was replaced, at this time engine check light is on again.*ak consumer states when the vehicle was driven off the lot the first day, there was a horrific screeching noise from the right front wheel, consumer assumed that it was a new car noise and it would eventually go away, consumer was inforemd that something had slipped in the wheel area, over the next two weeks consumer complained to the dealer that vehicle was making an extremly loud thumping noise, the problem was diagnosed as the freon system which was then flushed and then refilled to the correct level, which was done to take out the air bubbles in the air condition line, also the air condition was blowing hot air, the center console would not latch, numerous componets were replaced on the vehicle due to the engine light coming on and the problem still exists.*jb

I have a concern with the transmission's on the mazda 626 transmission style cd4e. there are thousands of people (internet searched) who have these vehicles and have been placed in dire straits as i am. i was traveling down the freeway at 65 mph and from out of nowhere, my od stopped functioning and left the car's tranny slipping out of 4th gear searching for a lower gear as it threw the flashing od light off indicator light. i had a woman swerve behind me as i had total loss of power and trying to get my car to grasp any gear. once i pulled to the side of the road and stopped, the od light stopped flashing and my vehicle was left in a limp home mode where i could not get over 45mph. i had the tranny rebuilt to the tune of 1500.00 and guess what? i got into the car to do highway travel one week later, and it happened again. i have read that i am by far the only person this has happened to. this is a 2000 model. my brother bought it in 2002. he has maintained the vehicle for the last 7.5 years and i have had it for 6 months now. the miles are 76k, only! someone needs to have mazda fix this issue. this is rediculous and thie is by far a major safety concern. the surging and searching the 4th gear does is very hard, jerky and surging. anyone right on your butt in traffic is going to slam into one of these vehicles. there is also a tsb for this as well......but mazda has offered no amends to this situaution when i called the customer service line. they said they were unaware of this situation. that is simply not possible.

We have mazda 626 4cyl, 2000 yr., automatic transmission. the transmission in our mazda always hesitates to shift up and revs up to very high rpms eventhough the acceleration is gradual. there is also quite a bit of noise in the car coming from engine when i am murging on a freeway. the trasmission seems to be stuck in a lower gear. the transmisison was replaced by the dealer in 2002. however, the same problem remains to this day. sometimes, when the car is cold, just when you start it in the morning, for example, the car accelerates suddenly and i almost hit my other car in a garge.

I have a 2000 mazda 626 and the transmission is horrible. well, was because i had to replace it. instead of my car going in reverse when i put it in reverse it went forward. my overdrive light kept coming on and blinking and the code was always the temperature high due to highway driving. if this transmission wasn't meant for highway driving it should have never been utilized. luckily i didn't get into an accident with the care. *tr

I have a 2000 mazda 626 with the cd4e ford transmission and i have had problems with the transmission for about 3 years now. i have done numerous research and took it to many shops and have come to the conclusion that this transmission is trash. this transmission war poorly built and they need to recall this as soon as possible. mazda and ford should be held responsible for the bad engineering that has cost thousands of drivers problems and thousands of dollars in repairs. someone needs to be held accountable and a recall needs to be done. *tr

I bought a 2000 mazda 626 lx from a neighbor, and with only 95k on the odometer, the car began shifting rough. it didn't seem to cause much of a problem and i continued to provide general maintenance for the car. however, i almost never traveled outside of a 20 mile radius with the vehicle. once i did travel about 40 miles away, the transmission broke down and refused to enter into drive, but only the lower gears. as i searched the internet for similar problems, it became readily apparent that a transmission failure was common for the mazda 626 model. i am now faced with replacing the transmission at a cost of $2,000 plus. *tr

Transmission failure, mazda 626, year 2000. this is the second failure. following computer codes led to $800 in unnecessary repairs. car drives well until o/d begins to flash, rpm fluxes between 1000 and 5000 and tranny slips. on parking and shutting off motor then restarting and shifting into drive tranny slams into gear with a bang. never know when rpm is going to go crazy and the transmission to slip. this causes a mad scramble to get to the side of the road which is sometimes hard as you may be in the passing lane. cost estimates range from $1800 + 400 600 for install for a rebuilt transmission from a dealer of transmissions specifically for this car. this model/transmission combination is used on about the 10 preceding years. taken together they present a good case for a dealer recall i would think. even though mazda issued a tsb it is only meant to delay the problem until ultimate transmission failure. *tr

Shifting bracket continually falls off. the transmission doesn't shift into proper gear ( drive reverse etc) until trying a couple of times. the engine reves itself from 2000 to 4000 without pressing down more on gas pedal. the transmission will not shift from 2nd to first until you reach 50mph or release gas repeatedly while driving. this is very hazardous on any road. sometimes the transmission downshifts while driving on highway over 55mph. this is extremely dangerous. i have had cars almost hit me in the rear. this happens on a daily basis. i have been looking for a transmission replacement and the cost is over $2000. book value is not much more the car has 117585 miles. *tr

The transmission is failing on our mazda 626 2000. according to the mechanic the rest of the car is in great condition besides the fact that we need a transmission overhall which will run us 4,000 - 5,000. a brief internet search by the mechanic and subsequently by myself indicated this is a common complaint of mazda. we are extremely lucky this did not cause injury to my husband who was driving at the time of initial occurrence or the mechanic who test-drove it for diagnostics. *tr

Mine car is an eight years old nice little car. it runs pretty well despite the fact that the transmission fluid get very dirty every 10,000 to 12,000 miles despite old two-year/30,000-mile interval that used to be considered the norm for transmission service is good for the 626; i have to do a full transmission flush to keep it running. yes, it's expensive for the tranny. recently, the real problem has appeared. my idle rpm is around 700, when i shift the gear in to reverse, it didn't shift properly. i feel nothing at all. i mean when a car sitting on a flat surface, it doesn't move even a little bit. if i gently step on the gas pedal till the rpm hit around 1000, there is a huge pumping on my transmission and the car inconsistently move backward. if i let the pedal go and hit and then release the brake, it stand till again. i brought it to the shop and have them run the diagnose test. they said there is nothing wrong with it. they have to look inside. it's too problematic. the repair cost is estimated around 2,000. which is more than the value of my car. and the transmission is not even a new one, it's a rebuilt which is likely to be broken again. i think there is a defects in the tranny system. *tr

2000 mazda 626 experienced transmission failure around 70,000 miles. while driving on vacation i noticed some oil on the trunk after arriving at our destination. before departing i had the car checked at a lube and tune center. was informed that the transmission fluid was leaking and the likely cause was a loose drain plug. plug was tightened and fluid was topped off. on the trip home smoke was visible from the rear of the vehicle. other drivers brought this to my attention. after pulling over and discussing the matter with my mechanic on the phone, i elected to have the car towed to a transmission repair shop in the closest large city. i was told the transmission needed to be rebuilt. apparently the seal between the two halves of the transmission ruptured. a small leak suddenly grew to a large leak on the trip and ruined the transmission. the technician said that he had been seeing 'more and more' of this problem with these transmissions. the tow was $500 and the rebuild was $2500. time off work and a rental car for two weeks also were needed. *tr

We recently bought this 2000 mazda 626 used for our twin boys, as their first car. we had it checked out by our local mechanic and he found a few normal things wrong with it and i was okay with those things. the problem i am having now is this; the o.d. warning light now comes on and flashes. it had never occurred before. this began while driving on the highway for the first time (we never had a reason to go onto the highway) on this day we did and all of a sudden the car begins to de accelerate and the tach needle start bouncing around and the car does not want to accelerate. the o.d. light came on and now comes on very often at all times and roads. the next day i took it to my local mazda dealer to have it checked out. they found two codes wrong with it ( p1746 and p1783 ). they reset the computer and told me that if the problem persist, that i would need to replace the transmission, they also told me that it is not a repair that is covered by any warranty because the warranty has already expired. i have gone on the internet and have found that this a very common problem with this vehicle and any vehicles with this transmission. it is obviously a defect in the transmission. i have not repaired it yet, because i can not afford to repair it. if this problem occurs so often why doesn't mazda declare it a recall and fix the problem. *tr

My car started to shake and have a burning smell and when i took the car in they said that wires were misplaced by another mazda dealership i took it to about 8 months before. i then called back about a moth later and told them that my car jerks when it shifts gears. at that time they said that i just have slippage and may just need to add some transmission fluid . i did that and it seemed to help until last week when i was driving and stopped at a stop light and when it was time to go my car would not move. the rpm meter went into the red but my mph remained at 0. i had it towed to the dealership then they told me my transmission was gone and that it would be 3700 to repair. more than what the car is actually worth in good condition. *tr

2000 mazda 626 lx 4-cyl mazda is experiencing jerking or gear shifting problem. took car in to two different mazda shops-on five separate occasions-within a 60 day span- and the problem still was not corrected or diagnosed. spent more than $1100 in repairs. later researched on my own and found out that ford transmission model cd4e used in my model car was possibly defective. after discussing with mazda, i was told to just drive the car until the transmission completely failed and then have it replaced for $3000. i asked about having a transmission fan installed and was discouraged. mazda service bulletin 005-02 instructs tech's to install a transmission fan if the customer complaint matches the bulletins description. i still was not given any information about this matter. how can mazda get away with not taking responsibility for this? obviously there is a problem when thousands of messages on the message board all discuss the same issue. this is totally unethical and should be dealt with. *tr

There were no signs that the transmission would fail, after reading the forums, this is clearly an improperly designed transmission. if i would have read the forums before the failure i would have traded in the car while it had some value. hopefully you are reading this before your 626 tranny fails. the estimates for the repair were $3500 and there was $1800 left on the note. we only got $500 for the trade. the repair didn't make sense after reading about all the tranny problems this car has. *jb

My mazda 626 es, 2000 4 cylinder, need to have it's transmission replaced again. it broke one year ago in oct 2005 and this year it has broken once more and needs to be replaced. a yearly transmission change is overkill since i don't really drive in high stop and go situations, do due diligent maintenance, and do not drive in a manner which would tax the transmission. i believe, because of the second transmission failure, that is a product defect and causes an undue cost to consumers. *jb

My 2000 mazda 626 (56 thousand mile) died on the highway, the transmission failed and i almost got killed! my girlfriend called the mazda dealer where i bought my car ( east coast mazda) and pretty much was told, oh well, what do you want us to do about it?? well, i now understand that this transmission problem is very common in mazda 626 from years 1994-2002. i put out over three thousand dollars for a transmission and i think they should pay on cars like mine that only have 56 thousand miles & the trans dies, plus people could get killed, i can't believe there has been no recall for this problem to date, are they waiting to get sued?? that money was my vacation money so now i am out of my trip because of a bad transmission which they are well aware of, just look up mazda 626 trans problems on the web and see how many there are! *nm

I was recently informed that my vehicle (2000 mazda 626) is in need of a transmission. i have had preventive maintenance done at the suggested times and not until doing research discovered that there are reported problems with the mazda 626 transmissions. upon taking it to the shop, i noticed 3 other 626's in the garage with the same problem. someone definitely needs to look into recalling these vehicles and the issues that they are having. while i don't have my old transmission, i do have receipts documenting the replacement cost for the part. *nm

The over drive light in my 2000 mazda 626 4 cylinder kept coming on and it would lose power after i drive for about 20 miles on the highway, when i pull over, shut off the engine and start the car,the od light would go off and the car would run normally. the transmission was also hesitating. finally the over drive light came on and the transmission failed, the car had 79,705 miles. i had the car towed to a garage where it was determined that the direct clutch hub & shell, solenoid assembly, drive chain and forward torque converter failed. the transmission was rebuilt with brand new parts and the radiator was changed. this appeared to resolve the problem. *jb

I own a 2000 mazda 626, for the last week and a half the vehicle has been at the montgomery mazda (charlotte, nc) dealership twice and it is still not repaired. the first time i took it, i clearly told them that while driving the vehicle began to act as if it is trying to change gears but can't (automatic transmission and i am already in going 45 mph so it should be in the 5th gear) the rpms go up to 4 and then it jerks (hard) when it catches up and the rpms drop. they claimed that it needed a tune up, new spark plug wires (i already replaced these twice) and a new fuel filter. i spent $356 to get all of this done and on the way to work the car did the same thing again. i called them back and told them that the problem was still not fixed and they claimed that they didn't know what it could be. i took the car back again that following monday at 7:30 am (originally took it there on thursday, june 1, 2006) and they claimed that they were going to look at the vehicle and find out what the problem is. after waiting for about 5 hours i called since i didn't hear anything from them and another service person told me that my car had just been sitting there. when i went to pick it up, then they told me that it might be the engine relay or maybe the transmission. i asked them if they checked it they stated no. i took the vehicle to another transmission place and the person stated that it was low on transmission fluid and that was the problem but after they fixed that the car was still doing the same thing. i looks as if i will need a new transmission. every mechanic i have talked to since thinks it is the transmission, i found that mazda released a bulletin telling the their mechanics what to do if od off light is flashing after long driving and the transmission is slipping and the mazda service department didn't even mention it and i clearing told them that it only does it after i have been riding for a while. *nm

This is actually the second failure of the transmission. the first failure occurred in early 2003 while the car was still under the 3 year/36,000 mile warranty (it had about 33,000 miles on it). the problem was the one outlined in the mazda tsb # 0500502. i had the fluid cooler installed at that time as well as a replacement factory refurbished ford/mazda transmission (the dealership solution). i was told at that time that there shouldn't be any more problems for the life of the (new) transmission, which i took to mean that it would last about 100-120,000 miles. well, here i am, less than 50,000 miles later and the transmission had a major failure. without warning, the car began to make a sound i can only liken to tin cans in a tumbler. i immediately pulled over and within a few minutes, there was a puddle of transmission fluid on the ground. a good mechanic will rebuild it for $2800. that is more than half the value of the vehicle (~$5000). this defect is apparently much more than a simple matter of keeping the transmission cool, it is a systemic problem that affects the mechanicals of the transmission and has little to do with the operating temperature of the fluid. since the warranty on the car has expired, as well as the warranty on the work the dealership did 3 years ago to repair the problem initially, i am stuck with a huge repair bill and no desire to own the car. when the repair is complete, i will be selling the car. *jb

2000 mazda 626 lx 4 cyl. on march 1st 2006, my speedometer dropped to zero while driving at a continuous speed (45 mph) this happened several times within a half hour period before the engine light came on. on march 2nd, i drove the car to the local mazda dealership for a diagnostic. according to the dealership, the diagnostic revealed that the speed sensor was bad. however, they also related that the sensor was replaced and that the problem was still there. the dealership proceeded with a search of the wiring in order to determine what the problem was. this was done at an hourly rate of $85.00 an hour. on march 6th, a broken wire was found at the firewall. it took them 7.5 hours to make this determination. on march 11th, while on the expressway, my o/d light began flashing off and on continuously. it also began bucking and jerking and would slip in and out of gears. this is the first time this has ever happened with this car. i just hit 95,000 miles and i purchased it new in may 2000. *nm

I have a 2000 model mazda 626 with approximately 80,000 miles which i purchased new. the car recently started having automatic transmission problems and eventually was unsafe to drive. i called the service manager and explained the symptom's and was informed that the transmission in all likelihood would have to be replaced with a rebuilt unit since they do not perform transmission repairs. the cost would be from $2500 to $3000. i was very much upset with this, since i had the 60,000 mile service performed and no mention was made as to potential transmission problems. i called the mazda customer office and was told that the car was out of warranty and there was little they could do. i told the representing that i was very disappointed with their attitude and their lack of support. i had to take the car to a nearby transmission shop for repairs. the transmission had to be rebuilt at a cost of over $2100. the reason for my complaint is that i have recently discovered through the internet that there have many complaints about mazda 626 transmission problems. mazda has done nothing to resolve these problems or even to acknowledge that there is a problem. the only action they have taken is to discontinue the 626 production. after reading about all the transmission problems, i am sure that mazda/ford was aware of these problems and have simply ignored them. meanwhile, mazda owners are left with the financial responsibility of dealing with expensive repairs and/or loss of the car resale value resulting from the reputation that these cars have transmission problems. what other recourse do we have other than to complain? *jb

No specific event lead to this, just parking the car normally running an errand and trying to drive home. the first time this happened (about 9 months ago) my daughter was stuck at 11pm the car would not move into any gear. the tow truck driver told us the cable underneath probably disengaged. we towed it to our repair shop and they replaced the cable. since then when the car is in reverse it intermittently seems to stick causing it to delay moving or jerking back. we brought it back to the shop and insisted they put on a new cable . last week (approx aug 24th) my daughter once again called that the car would not move out of the parking space, it wouldn't go into any gear. the tow truck again towed us to the shop where they reported that the cable was fine etc and they couldn't locate the problem. this costs me money and time everytime i have to leave work, get it towed and spend repair fees. not to mention the added stress of the car being unreliable. i decided to look for recalls and known defects out here. i cannot believe that with the number of problems reported mazda/ford is not helping those of us who are loyal to mazda. i purchased 2(used) from hertz and a 2005 mazda 6 a few months ago. with 3 mazdas sitting in my driveway im especially interested to see what's being done about this problem. why hasn't mazda/ford paid for the transmission problem ??? maybe we should start a class action suit>i expect at the least repair to my vehicle whether or not it means a new transmission, not a used or rebuilt one. im still making payments on this car! the funny thing is a few years back i had a ford taurus that jerked forward so badly it caused me to have an accident, i wish i had known about this problem before. in addition weve already had the axles replaced, and several brake jobs but the brakes continue to squeak like they need new brakes. *nm

I own a '00 626 that i bought from my grandmother in 2-04, who had bought it new in '99. i have since had tranny issues on 2 occasions with the most recent requiring a complete replacement with what the tech. described as an identical failure prone unit. my grandmother had a new (not rebuilt) and identical transmission installed at ~42k miles as noted in the service log. i did a search on the web and i was shocked at what i found. numerous cases of failure, at alarmingly similar intervals and all had the commonality of being equipped with auto. w/ od tranny mfg'd by ford and installed in 4 cyl. mazda 626's. from what i can gather the high failure rate has something to do with the inadequate cooling design and subpar materials used in the clutch packs. so because of this when it's all said and done with we will have shelled out ~$2500 (exc. labor) for a rebuilt tranny that is expected to fail in less than 30k miles regardless of the service intervals. there are suggestions on the internet how to gain some addl. life out of a unit, albeit small. to me it would seem this responsibility should fall on the manufacturer and not on the consumer. as a consumer i'm expected to trust an automobile manufacturer to properly design and test a vehicle and it's subsystem prior to releasing it upon the public. failing that it would seem to me the manufacturer should be held accountable for flaws such as those not related to normal wear and tear as is apparent in this case. which in turns is what brings me here. when all else fails the consumer and public at large has only one advocate and that is the u.s. government, which in the interest of safety and consumer rights has the authority to enforce this accountability. everyone single person privy to this complaint should take a moment and consider anyone they know who owns or drives an automatic mazda 626 of the years 98-02 with the above mentioned generic and common configuration is impacted by this design flaw. *jb

 Transmission problems on a 2000 mazda 626
04/20/200558000
Faulty/defective transmissions are being used in mazda vehicles well after the issue was known about by the manufacturer. there are literally hundreds, of not thousands of individuals and companies who have had their transmissions go out... many with well under 60k miles. and, many have been through several transmissions before 100k miles. all of the problem vehicles share the same symptoms: od light flashing off and on, and transmission slipping in and out of gear, as the transmission burns up, literally from poor design and implementation which doesn't allow for proper air flow and cooling. this problem is widely acknowledged by the manufacturer, car owners, dealers, service centers, and other automotive professionals. proof of this fact was a notice sent out to dealers that there is a cooling kit available for this transmission that should aid in keeping the transmission cool. however, this is not a free addition! mazda is actually charging customers to add a fix to their design flaw! i feel this problem is not only a fraudulence issue, but is also a safety issue. people could (may have already) be severely injured, or killed, by having their transmission go out as they attempt to enter high traffic, high-speed areas, such as a freeway. personally, i expect to receive the difference between what i could have sold my car for, and what i actualy had to sell it for due to this known defect. i also expect to see mazda make good on this problem with current and previous owners, as well as correcting this issue once and for all, to ensure that this problem doesn't continue. thanks, david williams

Took my 2000 mazda 626 to mike mcgrath's in cedar rapids, ia while under warranty because of problems with the transmission. was a delay in shifting and shifting hard. service drove the car and i was told there was nothing wrong with the car. problem continued and when i took the car in after it was off of warranty, was told by mcgrath's that the car needed a new transmission. mcgrath's was aware that 2000 mazda 626's had transmission problems the first time i took the car in but neglected to inform me. appears that mazda uses a ford transmission but does not install a coolant as ford does with their vehicle transmissions. although mazda covered cost of parts, i was responsible for the labor costs of $600. mcgrath's should have alerted me to the fact that there were transmission problems the first time i brought the car in and mazda should have issued a recall on this defective vehicle. i have driven mazda's for 19 years but i am finished with them. the quality now is extremely lacking. *ak

Purchased new 2000 mazda 626 07--01 transmission o/d came on, transmission fluid spewed out. took it in and mazda could find nothing wrong with it. first indication something was wrong with mazda transmission. 03-04 -transmission totally went out on mazda, at a cost of $3033. had it rebuilt. took mechanic 5 weeks to rebuild it. present- have taken vehicle back to mechanic 4 times as still having trouble with the transmission. i at first thought the mechanic did a shotty job. after further research i have discovered hundreds of mazda 626 owners whose transmissions went out on them after the first 2 to 5 years of purchase of the vehicle spending anywhere from $1100 - $5000 to repair the vehicle. *la

O/d free light on dash board keeps flashing. rpms at idle jump sporadically. while driving, the transmission can not make up it's mind what gear it should be in. this makes the mazda 626 lx unpredicable, therefore, unsafe.

I am complaining about the transmission. i have had 3 transmissions to my car since i bought it. i am needing a 4th transmission. shifts hard on downshifts to upshifts usually at 2nd gear. makes a humming noise to the transmission. the dealer put 2 trans. in and the same is occurring again. brakes are also messed up- squicks horrible even when i just put new ones, struts are all out, have had in my first yr of purchased, three transmissions, 1 air conditioner replaced, 1 roof liner was to short replaced, 1 recall, reverse sometimes works- you have to regear it to make sure it is on reverse-cause you don't want to go forward when you want to backwards, i have to at times put the gear in neutral to start my car- because it won't start on park at times. i am a very dissatissifed customer who will not buy another mazda car again. my car needs another transmission to it. i have proof of all work done to this lemon from the dealers. *ak

Od off light on our 2000 mazda 626 lx started flashing. took the car to a local dealer (berge mazda in mesa az) and they diagnosed a code p1718- transmission overheating. they recommend to install a transmission cooler kit and perform a transmission service to correct the problem(estimate given -$1014.00-way too expensive!!!). went to another dealership (earnhardt's ford/mazda in chandler az) to get a second opinion and they made the same recommendations. both dealers stated that mazda issued a technical service bulletin about this problem (cd4e transmission) and addressed this issue with a transmission cooling kit install. we decided to have the work done at earnhardt's (total cost $344.00-more reasonable estimate). we purchased this vehicle at hertz car sales in nov 2001 with about 30,000 miles on it. shortly after we got it, the transmission was replaced by the dealer(berge mazda) because it was slipping. since the car was still under the manufacturer's warranty(3 yr/50,000 miles), we didn't have to pay the cost of repairs. our car currently has 51000 miles and since it's out of warranty, we had to shoulder the cost this time. i have been researching the internet and have found numerous complaints about mazda transmission failures. i believe that since mazda was aware of this problem, there should have been a recall for this type of transmission and remedied it by installing the transmission cooling kit free of charge to consumers.*ak

Was driving nearly 70mph on the interstate when the car began attempting to shift into the next gear. it wouldn't shift and the vehicle began sputtering uncontrollably, and it nearly made me hit an 18-wheeler. the front end seemed like it jumped several times, and i was finally able to get it in control and pull over. once on the side of the interstate, i placed it on park, and then back to drive, and continued my journey, only to have that happen again before i hit 60mph. that time, the car kept attempting to change gears even after letting go of the gas pedal, and again, jumped several times uncontrollably. i seriously thought i would get into an accident on the interstate, but i pulled over again and left it on park for several minutes. after that, i started back on drive to at least reach the next exit off the interstate, when i only reached about 35-40mph when it did it again. it is in the shop now and i havne't stopped hearing about how difficult it is to rebuild that specific transmission, and how frequently they have those mazda 626 vehicles with transmission problems (and frightening stories), in their shop. i am just thankful that i wasn't killed driving that car on a very busy interstate. this issue needs to be addressed before someone is seriously injured, if they haven't already.
