I was driving on a highway. i heard a high pitched squealing sound then smoke started blowing out of my car. i could not see, and the other drivers behind me lost visability too. in the middle of this blinding smoke, surrounded by huge trucks, i lost aceleration. my instrumentation panel did not have any warning lights on. i was driving blind. i pulled off the highway as quickly as possible, and had my car towed to a dealership. the dealership said my turbo blew out, (which i guess sucked all the oil out of the car) i need a vvt valve and the timing chain is stretched. on a car with 57,000 miles! in checking on line, i found this has been a problem with the cx-7 for 6 years and they are no longer making this model. i see that mazda deals with these problems by stating the owner did not maintain the car properly, when in actuality, there is a serious problem with the turbo system and how the oil cools it. there is also a problem with sludge buildup. i believe mazda has been successfully avoiding a recall. but these issues are a real safety concern. i am very lucky that there was no accident as a result of this incident. these issues can be dangerous. when everything blew on my car, no one could see the road.

Apparently the design of the turbo and the engine creates hot spots in the engine, especially in the turbo. these hot spot create sludge build up which eventually effects the performance and reliability of the engine. research on the internet shows this to be a problem for a considerable amount of owners of this vehicle. mazda has refused to correct these problems under their warranty. also lacking by mazda, since it is apparently a major cause of large build-ups of sludge, is the necessity to idle the engine for three minutes prior to turning off. this was never explained to us when the vehicle was purchased.

As i pulled out of my parking lot at work i lost power so i drove the car to the dealer. they called and told me the turbo was bad due to being clogged with sludge. and, that due to that sludge the entire engine would have to be replaced at a cost of $8,900. i've only owned the car 9 months, have receipts for multiple oil changes, and had an extended warranty - however, the extended warranty company (ameriplus) states that because the problem was caused by sludge, i'm not covered. i've researched and discovered that this is a huge problem with this vehicle, please help me! *tr

In january 2012, i received a letter from mazda inc that the company was extending the warranty on the timing chain to 70,000 miles. in the letter, it stated that a certified mazda dealer could inspect the vehicle to determine if the timing chain has a problem. on feb 24 the vehicle was inspected by a certified mazda garage and when my husband went to pick it up, they said it has a slight noise but nothing big.then they asked for all the receipts from the oil changes. now, we bought the car in march 2009, therefore we would have no receipts for the past year and a half the car was with another owner. we only had 3 receipts b/c my husband routinely change the oil . now, the other thing was in early february, the vehicle began to not start all the time. it was taken to our local garage and the repair man said it could be a number of things, but since it has the timing chain issue...that could be one of the problems that causes a car not to start. it left me stranded on 3 occasions. so,from february until march 30, my husband argued with mazda and the dealership that first inspected the vehicle. the deal was mazda was not going to pay for a new timing chain b/c we couldn't produce oil change receipts and if there was sludge in the motor this could be why. so on march 30, the mazda dealership called and said for $180 the gaskets could be pulled to see if there was sludge. which in all the reports that i read on this website, majority of engines had sludge b/c the motor burns the oil too hot. the other repairs that vehicle had: 2010 -air conditioner compressor (it was recalled) ($900), a new starter ($300), dec 2011- rt rear wheel bearing ($600), feb '12- new battery ($100) which didn't need to be replaced b/c it was part of the timing chain problem.so on april 4, we traded the vehicle and bought a 2009 honda cr-v. my husband and i will never by a madza again.

We leased a 2009 mazda cx-7 (garaged and highway driven only). there was never a problem. the battery died. we changed the battery. car started and then died. after one month, it again had been flat bedded by mazda. they did a check and told me they could not find anything wrong with the electrical system, but they found sludge in the engine compartment. they had a recall on a valve which i never received in the mail. the car only had 17,000 miles on it. after 3 years, mazda came back and said they would cover under lease or extended warranty, which i had. they said it would cost $9,500 to replace an engine with a 17,000-mile leased car and they would not stand by their product. i want to start a lawsuit on the car as i have had many leases without these problems ever and leased over 10 cars in the last couple of years with no problem.

I bought this used around june 2010 with approx. 16000 mile. i had oil change at the local garage station. they told me that the oil was very thick. so i had it changed again within three month. it was running fine without any indication and all of a sudden i lost the power and engine quit. i had it towed to garage and they told me that it is better we have it checked by dealer as this has warranty. mazda dealer looked in to this and told me that the turbo engine is rouined due to gunk in the oil. they asked me for oil change record. i only had since i had it . i could not get any previous record. mazda and delaler told me that the warranty is void due to neglence to maintain. they will not cover under warranty. i can not believe this. this car has only 35k mile and no indication and mazda do not provide any kind of warranty assistance. anyone else had the same issue with mazda cx-7? i think this is something to do with turbo.

I own a 2009 mazda cx 7 turbo. the veichle has had it's proper oil changes by a service garage not a quick lube place. the oil was castrol gtx 5w-30w, with fram oil filter.the longest interval between oil changes was 6000 miles and the shortest 4000 miles. the vehicle now has 45,664 miles on it and the wife complained about a high pitched noise and lack of performance . brought to the mazda dealer, the dealer said the turbo went and that mazda will not cover it under warranty (60,000 warranty on drive train and turbo) because of engine sludge !! are you kidding me...engine sludge, the proper oil viscousity was used at proper interval (mazda says 7500 between oil changes). no signs of over heating, high engine temps, the vehicle is driven to work and back (4 miles away) 2x's per day 6 days a week. sounds to me like engine oil is not getting up to temp. and this is causing the sludge, mazda does not state this anywhere any time in their manual. i found this out only after researching on line....anyone else having issues with their mazda ???? i ve owned turbos before and never had issues. my vehicle gets it's oil change by the same station and this nissan has 190,000 miles on it with no problems and no sludge !!!

My wife and i purchased a 2007 mazda cx-7 from lithia mazda in fresno, ca. it was a brand new vehicle and within the first 26,000 miles, the air conditioning compressor went out. this was covered under the factory warranty and replaced. now my the same vehicle has 65,000 miles on it and the compressor went out again. i have been told by the dealership that they will replace the unit (for $1,800) and warranty it for 3 years or 50,000 miles. i fail to comprehend why this is not already covered under the same warranty. *tr
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - COOLING SYSTEM

I bought the 2009 mazda cx7 in march of 2009. about mid august to early september 2009 the car would begin to jolt backwards (when put in reverse) or forward (in drive) when i would be ready to leave. soon after it would stall to go up hills or to pick up speed when getting on the interstate. later i would fuel the car toa full tank and the gasoline would spill all back out. i called and filed a complaint @ 2 different times at which the dealership could not find anything. later calling me back stating that the o2 was messed up and fixed about (early february 2010 is when it was in the shop). i was without a vehicle for 1 1/2 weeks. after being looked at & fixed, i later pumped gasoline and it repeated the same incident, spilling about a gallon of fuel! i called again and said it was bad fuel? now, in april 2010 with the weather being warm & when i turn on the vehicle the exhaust pipes begin to smoke and you can find gunk inside the exhaust pipes. i will be soon be calling gorman mccraken in longview, tx for them to look at the vehicle again as it is repeating every problem once again. *tr
