Incident 2005 mazda 6 broke down along side road. engine only had 40,000 miles on it. called mazda service manager, bob, and he told me to have it towed there and he'd take care of me. i was later told the engine blew but as his crew looked at it they verified that the engine and oil was clean. he said he'd call regional and see what he could do for me to get the engine repaired/replaced. damage resulting after several weeks of run around i was finally told it was going to cost $90 for the service team to have looked at the engine. i was then informed that he could put a salvaged engine in for $4000. i about freaked out. $4000 for a used engine that came with a mere 90 day warranty. i called mazda headquarters and was told i should've bought an extended warranty. i told her she was crazy that no car costing over $20,000 should blowing engines with a mere 40,000. i then asked if mazda would help out by paying for service or the engine or at least half so that i could get the car back working. she told me that bob offered me a great deal and i had refused him. i told her what he offered and $4000 for a used engine plus other parts as needed didn't sound like a good deal to me at all. i asked her if it was her car if she would not expect mazda to stand behind their product and assist? she told me that mazda stands behind their products and i should've purchased the extended warranty. after reviewing the internet i see mazda 6 engines seem to have alot of loss of oil/blow out problems. always thought mazda was a good company...but i know i'll never purchase another and i'll make sure everyone i speak with hears first hand of my experience with the vehicle, the dealers run around and the arrogance at mazda hq in california.

2005 mazda 6s 3 liter v6 with automatic transmission (aisin warner). application of throttle to accelerate in 5th or 6th gear causes jerk, selects neutral then eventually selects an appropriate gear. very dangerous on uphill freeways due to sudden loss of any power. mazda has a service bulletin on this # 05-016/06 that proves this condition is not isolated.

The vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission. when the vehicle was parked for over 8 hours outdoors in direct sunlight, the vehicle would not shift out of park. failure occurs only on extremely hot days - temperatures over 95 degress and only when all the windows & sunroof were completely closed. vehicle was allowed to sit with the engine running and air conditiioner on high for roughly 15-20 minutes. when interior temperature of car lowered, the car was able to shift out of park. the problem replicated sporatically but on at least 10 different occassions over the course of 2 years. the vehicle was brought to dealership on numerous occassions where they were unable to replicate the problem. during one service visit a mechanic cleaned the microswitch responsible for the shift interlock. that did not remediate the problem.

: i have a 2005 mazda 6 wagon bought new off the dealer's lot. 4 years later, in sept. 2009 with 22k miles on it, i was coming off a curving exit ramp when i stepped on the gas to merge into traffic and nothing happened - no pickup - i just started coasting. this happened a few times before in the previous years (maybe 4-5 times), but those times it felt more like a belt slipping and it caught again very quickly, like in a split second. the ramp experience was more pronounced and lasted longer, like a full 2 seconds, which was more scary and potentially more hazardous. turned out the tcm (transmission computer module) had to be replaced. it would have cost $1400+ but luckily i bought an extended warranty when i bought the car so it covered that cost. its happening again, so i have to take it in to the dealer when i can to get it checked again. not a good feeling when your trying to merge into traffic and you expect the car to move when you hit the gas, and it moves just enough to get the nose of the car into the lane of travel, then stops dead while cars are bearing down on you. extremely scary. hoping this is not a continual recurring event. update: took the car to the dealer the first week of april and again today, first week of may (the 3rd) 2010 for the exact same problem mentioned above- while driving car just slows down, no power. step on the gas, nothing. then it kicks in and hesitantly moves. this is the 3rd or 4th time taken to the dealer for the same problem with the transmission. getting ticked off about it now.....*tr

The mazda 6 jerks when shifting from 1st gear to second. did this a couple times while in traffic almost causing an accident. it feels like the car is hesitant to shift and then shifts and jerks you forward when there are possibly other cars in front and you need to stop. i brought the car in multiple times to the dealer and they could not replicate the problem. *tr

Automatic transmission failure in 4th gear on 2005 mazda 6. we bought the car new and 2years later the transmission started slipping in 4th gear. i complained to the dealer and they said they found nothing. the third year it became pronounced and still they said they found nothing. i found out last year that mazda knew about the problem in the transmissions and never contacted us about a replacement transmission. i went to the dealership when i found out late last year and i was told that they could no do anything about it as the car was over the mileage. i strongly feel that mazda knew the transmissions were defective and never notified owners. we are the only registered owners of the vehicle and it is an accident waiting to happen because once the vehicle gets in the 4th gear it vibrates and shakes the whole car violently.*tr

Leased 2005 mazda 6 in july 2005. september 2005: took in for service for check engine light. dealership replaced a purge canister valve. while driving vehicle after repairs were made, i heard a high-pitched whirring noise from the engine and returned the vehicle to the dealership for service. tech determined noise was coming from transmission. trans. was replaced two times; noise did not go away. tech then determined it was the fuel pump. that was replaced but noise remained. tech then suspected the fuel lines were vibrating, added a clip to prevent rubbing and noise disappeared. that took 28 days. day after vehicle left dealership, fuel tank leaked fuel upon starting the vehicle. dealership determined that a cap had not been tightened. cap was tightened and car was returned but smelled awful. dealership shampooed interior. june 2006: while driving, tachometer suddenly bounced and vehicle did not respond to accelerator being pressed. after turning car off and restarting it, car worked fine, but was taken to dealership. tech replaced throttle body. april 2007: vehicle stalled while waiting at traffic light. attempts to restart failed. vehicle was towed to dealership. tech determined that a fuel pump fuse had become disconnected. fuse was replaced. one week later, fuel tank leaked upon starting the vehicle. vehicle was towed to dealership again. fuel pump assembly had to be replaced. i do not have vehicle back yet. *tr

After a modest acceleration to pull into traffic, i had to stop suddenly due to a light and the car began to rev up to 1500 and back down over and over. i had to pull over immediately where it continued to rev and die down, regardless if i was in a gear or park. it is an automatic. i turned off the car and restarted, the problem went away but the engine light remained on for two days. i plan on taking to the dealer. it is only 7 months old, i bought it new. *nm

Dt: consumer says he is having problem with transmission. transmission will drop gears on its own, consumer just had vehicle at dealer for transmission slippage and harsh shifting. consumer said that dealer did a software calibration on the transmission control module. consumer says now when he is traveling on highway and consumer tries to accelerate transmission will drop from 4th gear to 3rd gear by itself and this makes acceleration very difficult. while driving vehicle in city consumer says that transmission will drop from 4th to 2nd while trying to accelerate. consumer notices which gear by the indicator light located on dash. consumer says that slippage and harsh shifting is now corrected, but he is having problem with transmission dropping gears. consumer says he has an email that he somehow come into position of, this email is from ford and says that there is a problem with this transmission in other vehicles as well as same type as consumer. consumer says that this problem began yesterday morning and dropped gears like this about 30 times in 24 hours. consumer says that the malfunction took part mostly yesterday and this morning in south field, mi. consumer says that he drove as much in the city as he did on the highway yesterday and this morning. *nm

Had 30000 mile service done prior to a 1000 mile one way vacation trip. after arriving at our destination washed car at coin car wash. drove car for about 10 minutes and engine began surging, transmission would not move from second gear, and vehicle speed would not exceed 20 mph. exited roadway and parked vehicle overnight. at engine startup vehicle ran fine but with engine light on. drove 60 miles and vehicle suffered complete shutdown on freeway. vehicle coasted to a safe stop and called mazda roadside. vehicle would not even turn over. vehicle towed to dealership, ignition coil and pcm were replaced. dealer approved vehicle for 1000 mile return trip. after only 4 hours of driving engine light came on again. exited interstate, parked vehicle and called mazda roadside. vehicle currently under repair. this was two identical failures within 200 miles of use. *ak

The clutch on my mazda 6 no longer works correctly and i only have 33,248 miles on my car. mazda usa said there's nothing they can do about it. they said before they'd even consider any help but that i should take it to a mazda dealer (17 miles from my house) and have it diagnosed ($110 for diagnostic testing). in order to get it there, i'd have to have it towed and because it's so far from where i live, i'd have to pay for the tow to and from the dealership. the cost estimate for the mazda dealer to replace my clutch is $1000-$1300. they went on to state that if it is a defective item, before helping me, they'd look to see whether i was loyal in getting the car serviced with one of their dealers. the closest dealer is 17 miles away, am i supposed to drive that far for an oil change? i bought the car in 2005 brand new from santa monica mazda which has since closed down. the clutch went out while i was driving on the freeway and i've been driving manual cars for 20+ years. this is not fair and mazda doesn't care. they really suck...as this clutch should have lasted 100,000 miles.
