Tl*the contact owns a 2005 mazda mpv. the vehicle was traveling 40 mph when the vehicle slid on the ice and crashed into the median onto the highway. the air bags did not deploy. this was the only time that the vehicle had been involved in a crash. the manufacturer told the contact that there was nothing they could do to assist him. the contact is concerned about the safety risk. the vin was not available. the current and failure mileages were 45,000 .
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The idle air control valve on these vans is seriously flawed and is prone to failure which stalls the engine and puts occupants in peril at high rates of speed without power braking or steering. once stalled, the engine can often fail to restart, leaving the driver unprepared and paralyzed to react. background - approximately six months after purchasing our van used (2-3 yrs old / 30k miles), we began to experience significant issues with the vehicle stalling randomly after 6 months of owning. unfortunately, the engine stalling was not a result of not maintaining an idle well on a regular basis. it was random and often followed by the engine running extremely rough, once the driver was able to restart (but then would go away completely undetected). i cannot stress how unpredictable the engine was over the year we experienced this intermittent stalling. every 1-3 weeks it would stall and sometimes we'd be stranded 1-30 minutes before starting and running normally (no check engine light after engine sat and restarted. light would come on when problems started and would cycle off once engine ran and computer checked sensors. why the contact to the nhtsa? real issue i have with here is that the van would randomly fail to idle and stall the motor when at freeway speeds over the year (6/2009 - 6/2010) this went unidentified. as a primary means of transportation in our household for four children (as most vans are), my wife refused to drive the vehicle starting in beginning of 2010 because of her experiences and subsequent fears after many close calls in which she couldn't steer or brake in a safe or reliable manner. the driver must shift to neutral (while at 70+ mph), and attempt to turn the engine over, to gain control again. take action on this as it is far too common and dangerous to ignore. mazda must be held accountable for the safe operation of these vehicles. *tr

I was waiting to make a left turn into my drive way, waiting to clear oncoming traffic. when the oncoming traffic was cleared, i found a gap before the next car comes my way and i decided it was safe to make a left turn. i turned the wheels of my mazda mpv , but car went stalled, it would not move. i had to stop the engine, and restart the car. i searched the internet and many people have the same issue due to clogged up iac valve. this is a very big risk to the saftety of the passengers and should be a recall.

I was driving at a very low speed in heavy traffic . lane next to me started moving, so i decided to change lane, find a empty space between 2 vehicles and decided to make a turn. my mazda stalled , and did not move. i had to put it back to park, stop the car, and restart, after that it ran ok. all this was on a freeway with moving traffic in the middle of the lane, when my wheels were turned and partially on the next lane and car body was standing still. i searched on the internet and it has happned to many people , due to iac valve getting clogged up. this should be a safety recall .

My mazda 2005 mpv van engine shuts down compltely when slowing down, slowing around corners and sitting at red lights. there does not seem to any spuddering or anythign engine runs great. loss of sterring is the biggest issue when engine cuts off. i have seen a bunch of other complaints about the same problem ont he same model van im sure theres lots more.

We own a 2005 mazada mpv. two years after purchasing the vehiclel it started to shake and jerk as if it wanted to turn off, after taking it to the dearlership it turns out the engine was misfiring due an ignition coil giving out. nine months later it happens again. this time they replaced all 6 six ignition coils. two years after replacing all six coils it happens again. this time they replaced the #3 coil. while at the dealership the service lady told us that this is a consistant problem with this vehicle and that we would have this problem with the coils for as long as we own the van. all three times that this has happened the car shakes and acts as if the engine wants to shut off. after vigorous research online we found out that we are not the only ones dealing with this problem. after complaining to mazda via email all they had to say was since the car was under warranty and all the coils where fix that they would not be able to help us in the future once our extended warranty runs out.

At 38,000 miles, the van started to have intermittent hesitations that randomly occurred. i needed to replace all ignition coils at a cost in excess of $600. *tr

After 60k miles, my van started stalling when slowing down or speeding up. not every time but often enough to concern my safety and the safety of my children. it happened twice today within 10 miles from each incident. *tr
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - ENGINE
07/10/2008590001
Was exiting parkway west westbound exit for route 22 in pittsburgh for weirton, wv; engine shut off on its own when engine went out of overdrive and increased its rpms and i let off of gas pedal to brake - lost power steering and brakes, maintained control, shifted to neutral, restarted engine - traction control light remained on for rest of trip to wv until key was returned to completely off. then all lights were reset to normal - no check engine warnings. this has occurred about 5 or 6 times again, always after accelerating, and then letting off the gas pedal. i have been able to replicate with vehicle in park - just rev engine to around 2500 to 3000 rpm, and let off the gas - it shuts off every time on its own. so far i have not been rear ended, but? *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 mazda mpv. the contact stated that the air conditioner system improperly distributes air. as a consequence, an excessive amount of air or heat was circulated throughout the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, and a technician was in the process of replacing the fan control module at an expense of $150.00. the manufacturer was notified, but no assistance was provided. the failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage was 71,000.

The driver's side power sliding door rarely works. typically it opens 1-3 inches then stops and beeps. if i manually open it a few more inches then press the button again it works on occasion, other times i must turn off the power to move it at all. it is a 2005 mpv with only 22,500 miles. also, on occasion the rear latch of the sliding door cycles, like it's trying to secure the door, while driving. i only recently purchased it so i don't know if this only occurs in winter (in wi) or not. i have not yet taken it to the dealer. however, my next door neighbor has the identical van (except his has 35,000 miles and is an lx, rather than my es). he has had his for two years and has problems with both power doors, especially in winter. his has been to the dealer three times with them claiming the can not correct the problem. he has problems many times even opening the doors manually (with power option off) in winter. both of us have three kids and this is tremendously irritating needing to load three children through the front doors, climb over the driver's buckets to the rear and buckle the kid's in, climb back over the buckets and drop them off at school repeating the whole process. other than the sliding doors we love our vans. *tr

POWER TRAIN - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

Transmission failure in a 2002 mazda mpv van. there was always erratic shifting especially when engine was cold. after it warmed up it seemed ok but during highway driving if having to suddenly accelerate it would feel like the transmission would for lack of a better description slip between gear shifts and bog down and then catch again. last week i was on a return trip home on a highway coming up a hill when the transmission suddenly started shifting very erratic i pulled off an exit and at that time the transmission stopped working completely...no gears at all and i coasted to the side of the road. had it towed to the local mazda dealer and was told that i was not covered under warranty. i bought this van new from a dealer in massachusetts before i moved to the midwest. it is less than 3 years old and just turned over 70,000 miles. i always kept up the maintenance on this car and also own a mazda protege 5. now i have to pay $2100 dollars for a transmission on a car that isn't even three years old! looking at all the reports i see about the mazda van and the problems with the power train i think mazda needs to come clean about the problems with their transmissions. i am now concerned about the transmission in my mazda protege and i think for my next new cars i purchase i don't know if i will even consider mazda.*ak
