Defect SummaryVehicle description: passenger vehicles equipped with front seat automatic shoulder belts. the rail of the automatic shoulder belt can wear sufficiently such that the cable which retracts the buckle assembly can become jammed in the rail rendering the shoulder belt inoperative.
Consequence SummaryA seat occupant may not be properly restrained in the event of a vehicle crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the passive shoulder belt assembly with a modified one (with additional dust lip) in vehicles which have experienced a problem. in vehicles in which the automatic shoulder belt functions properly, the rails will be inspected and replaced with modified rails if they exceed the inspection criteria.
NotesOwner notification began march 31, 1998 and will be completed by august 1998.owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact mazda at 1-800-222-5500.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-800-424-9393.

 Tl- the contact owns a 1993 mazda mx3. the contact stated the seat belt is jammed they cannot latch the seat belt. the seat belt is automatic and the should strap will not come back over the shoulder. the contact feels this is a safety issue because only the lap belt works. the vin was unknown.the failure mileage was 93,000 and the current mileage was unknown. rl

 Tl-the contact owns a 1993 mazda mx3. while driving approximately 55-65 mph the driver's side seat belt stuck in the back position where it can not move forward. he stated he has to press the emergency release button to get in and out of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and he was advised of recall 97v211000, seat belts:front:webbing and his vehicle was part of this recall. the vehicle was purchased used in march 2010. he stated he was advised by the dealer that there was a tsb regarding the door latch switch that he needed to get repaired before the recall was performed. he stated he had that done and now the dealer was refusing to perform the recall. he also stated the dealer advised him that the wiring needs to be checked and they advise him he would have to pay for it. the failure mileage was 145,000 and the current mileage was 149,000. vwb

 Tl*the contact owns a 1993 mazda mx3. the driver side front seat belt was repaired under nhtsa campaign id number 97v211000 (seat belts:front:webbing) in january 15, 2002. recently, the front passenger side front seat belt cable and retractor failed. the manufacturer stated that the front driver side seat belt was repaired; therefore, the recall was closed. the contact will need to replace the seat belt on his own. he is arguing with the manufacturer that the recall stated that both seat belts should be replaced. the failure mileage was 80,000 and current mileage was 197,000.

 The driver's side automatic seatbelt restraint is stuck midway on the rail which is a very dangerous position if a wreck were to occur. the power sunroof opens all the way but will not close. it requires a manual crank in order to close it. *ak
 The cable which retracts the buckle assembly has jammed in the rail, causing the shoulder belt to become inoperable. recall remedy did not correct the problem. recall number 97v211000. please give any further details. *ak

 Took vehicle to dealer for recall #97v211000. the dealer only inspected the shoulder belts, they didn't replace anything. the automatic shoulder belts still not operating properly. *ak

 Seatbelt system malfunctioned, causing the seatbelt to tighten too hard. occupant took off the seatbelt which wont protect the occupant if the seatbelt is not in used in an accident. please provide further information.

 When getting into the vehicle the automactic shoulder belts don't work and won't move at all. consumer took the vehicle in for service, and the dealer can't determine the problem. the shoulder belst still won't work. *ak

 Dt: 1993 mazda mx3. the consumer received a recall 72803 in april 2005 concerning the seat belts. the seat belts were repaired in april 2005. the seat belts malfunctioned at least 3 times since they were repaired. the vehicle had been taken back 3 times and they could not remedy the problem. they asked the consumer to bring the vehicle back for a fourth time. this started out with the passenger side and then on both sides. the seat belts were automatic shoulder belts, and they would not release automatically and must be released manually. *ak (12/01/05) refer to recall campaign# 97v211000. the problem recurred two more times in the driver's seat. currently the seat belts do not automatically open, trapping both the consumer and passenger. the recall repairs were made but the consumer still experience problems. *sc

 Vehicle was taken to dealer to have recall 97v116000 fixed. dealer did recall repairs, but then advised consumer that seatbelt sensor was broken. consumer advised that prior to recall seatbelts were just fine.*ak

 Tl* the contact owns a 1993 mazda mx3. while entering the vehicle the cable which retracts the buckle assembly became jammed in the rail. the condition rendered the shoulder belt inoperative. the previous owner had the vehicle repaired according to recall # 97v211000( seat belts:front:webbing). since the remedy was performed the manufacturer will not provide a second repair free of charge. the current and failure mileages were 117,000. updated 11/09/09 *bf updated 11/09/09

 Dt*: the contact stated intermittently the automatic seat belts will not automatically retract. in order to unlock the seat belts the contact has to reach around to the back seat. an nhtsa recall, # 97v211000 was performed on the vehicle five times concerning the seat belts:front:webbing however, the recall did not remedy the problem. the first time the recall was performed was in 2004. the last time was approximately six months ago. the dealership and the manufacturer instructed the contact to bring the vehicle back in. the contact will not return the vehicle for service due to the location of the dealership.
 Recall 97v211000. dealer john mazda, 105 ne 78th vacouver, wa 98665, 360-574-1131, fixed the recall. while wearing the shoulder belt it locked up, causes discomfort to the driver which may cause a loss of vehicle control. please provide further information.*ak
