Defect SummaryMazda is recalling certain model year 2001 through 2006, and 2008, tribute vehicles equipped with 3.0l v6 engines and speed control. inadequate clearance between the engine cover and the speed control cable connector could result in a stuck throttle when the accelerator pedal is fully or almost-fully depressed. this risk exists regardless of whether or not speed control (cruise control) is used.
Consequence SummaryA stuck throttle may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop or slow the vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death.
Corrective SummaryMazda will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles by increasing the engine cover clearance, free of charge. the safety recall is expected to begin on, or before, august 6, 2012. remedy parts are expected to be available in mid-august 2012. until then dealers will disconnect the speed control cable as an interim remedy, if parts are not available at the time of an owner's service appointment. owners may contact mazda customer assistance center at 1-800-222-5500, option #6.
NotesMazda's recall campaign number is 6812g.owners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

The gas pedal will get stuck in the up position periodically. it happens more often during the cold seasons. i have had many close calls getting into an accident while making a right turn and on coming traffic is approaching during the time i am trying to accelerate to get on to the lane and my accelerator gets stuck and the car is still slowly moving. i will literally have to continuously stomp on the pedal to get it to go down and once it does it accelerates quickly causing the vehicle to forward. i have taken it in the dealer to see what the issue was and they told me it was due to the carbon build up on the butterfly causing it to get stuck but even after getting the flush out it continued to get stuck while i am driving. i have gone online to see if anyone else has had this issue and sure enough there was. *tr

When apply full or almost full pressure to the gas peddle the throttle sticks causing the car to speed forward and the brakes do not engage fully to stop the vehical. thhis happened 3 times so far. i had use the emergency brake. i had the recall repair done this occured after it was done. they did something to the engine cover but later had it removed because i thought that was still it. but even without the engine on the car the throttle still sticks. dealership says it does not know why i am having the problem. *tr

I have found that my gas pedal won't depress in cold weather. the first time this happened was a few weeks after i bought the car in 2009. the said it's cold and the car just needs to warm up. this problem has continued to happen year after year, but never for any length of time. however this morning, as i was driving to work the pedal would no longer depress as i was going down the road. eventually i coasted to a red light and i frantically stepped on the pedal to no avail. i was able to turn on my hazard lights and somehow coast into a parking lot. i continued to let the car sit and warm up for another 10-12 minutes, when i was finally able to rev the engine. believing that the problem was solved i backed out of my parking sort and again tried to drive forward, however the pedal still would not depress. after sitting another 10 minutes, i was finally able to press the pedal hard enough for it to depress. i ended up needing one of my co-workers to follow me to work in case it happened again; which is did after 3-4 more times on my 10 minute drive to work. please look into this issue. *tr

On december 1, 2012 while driving at 58mph around 345pm on the expressway, my foot was on the accelerator with steady pressure, the car began to slow down. i realized that the car was not maintaining speed. i tried to press down on the accelerator pedal but it did not move. i was able to pull to the side of the road. i then tried with all the force of my leg to press down on the accelerator but with no avail. i tried lifting the pedal with my foot several times and suddenly the pedal freed up. this was on a sunny day, temperature around 60 . i have had this happen several times before on cold mornings on the way to work over the last few years but thought the car was cold and the car had not a chance to warm up. in 2010 i filed a complaint.no response. but this time i was truly afraid of getting in a bad car accident and injuring others.i have researched this vehicle and there does not appear to be any recalls for this model. on monday i plan to contact mazda for help before someone gets hurt. i urge you to look more into this make/model year. *tr

The gas pedal wont depress in cold weather. generally any temperature close to or below freezing. the first incident was shortly after i purchased the vehicle in 2009. i took it back to the mazda dealer but they could not find anything wrong. their remedy was to grease and lubricate the pedal assembly. this did not remedy the situation and the problem has been continuous every winter. i find that if i warm the car up sufficiently after the car has been parked for an extended period of time, the pedal does not stick. but this evening, november 17, 2012, it became stuck while i was driving and the car was warm. luckily, i was able to pull into a parking lot and not get rear ended for suddenly slowing down and not being able to accelerate. hoping for a recall very soon. *tr

When driving in cold weather, the accelerator will not press down. if you stop at a red light or slow down for traffic and try to accelerate, you can't press the accelerator down to get speed. it is stuck and won't press down. you have to keep pressing on it hard which results in the car taking off real fast and jerking everyone in it or causing traffic behind you to run into you because your vehicle will not accelerate. i've been reporting this problem since i've had this automobile in 2005. there are several hundred complaints on the internet with the same problem. i guess someone will have to be killed or seriously injured before something is done. *tr

First let me please advise that there was no incident regarding my vehicle. i am writing to try to get information about a potential recurring problem that was first reported and recalled with the 2002 and the 2003 / recall 63202. i have a 2005 mazda tribute and was just advised by the service department of irwin mazda in freehold new jersey that my car will need to have the brake booster and the master cylinder replaced. i know my car is a 2005 and the recall pertained to the 2002 and 2003 models, but i feel that this is an issue that is recurring and is not being addressed. i contacted mazda corporate and spoke to the supervisor mr. johhny garcia and i voiced my concerns, and i was dismissed by him stating that there was nothing he can or will do to escalate my concerns to a higher level of management at mazda corporate. the number i called was 949-727-1990. i am not sure how this works but i am truly concerned with this issue. there might be more consumers like me out there that had this issue with their car and was dismissed also. not only is this a safety concern, but the cost to replace this could be in the thousands. can you please reach out to mazda regarding my concerns, since [xxx] refused to help me escalate my call. thank you so much for your help. [xxx] please advise on how you think i should proceed, or if you can look into this potential recurring problem with the brake booster and master cylinder. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

My 2005 tribute has had gas pedal problems in the past. it was serviced for this in 2008 however when the weather is cold the gas pedal is still stiff and i haev to stomp on it to get it to go. yesterday however was a different story. i headed to work with my baby in the car. about 3 miles down the road on a hwy going 60 mph i let off the gas to slow down and my car did not slow! i stomped the break and it hardly made a difference. i went for 3 or 4 miles not pressing the gas and continued to fly down the road at 60 mph! i tried to kick the gas and it didn't help. i finally took both of my feet and stood on the break while trying not to get rear ended and pulled off on the exit ramp still going 15-20 mph! i had to turn the key off to get my car to stop! my husband was near by and said that my car was idling at 3rpms! if this had happened in different circumstances....i don't even want to think about that! please pay attention to all of the same complaints on this website! if this had been addressed earlier my baby and i would not have had to go threw that! does someone have to die before anyone does anything?

The 2005 mazda tribute freezes the accelerator oftenly, speciallly in winter.the pedal freezes while the vehicle is in motion and when the leg from the accelerator pedel is removed and wants to accelerate the vehicle again.sometimes it is little hard to push the accelerator (the accelerator resists) when the vehicle in motion.

My accellerator gets stuck frequently. this is dangerous and there is no way this could be my fault. it has gotten stuck on several occasions since november of 2008. on a seperate note: my brake booster failed (twice) in two years.

2005 mazda tribute gas pedal sticks, no rhyme nor reason......circumstances are never the same, so it is scary when it happens. i press the gas and think that the tribute is going to move, and nothing happens. thankfully, i've never been hit! ( yet) . dealer repair shop was of no help. click automotive ( where i bought the vehicle ) , tells me to bring it in when it's happening . stomping on the pedal doesn't cure it, it resumes working when it feels like it. i try shifting from gear to gear........reverse, neutral etc. then all of a sudden it resumes working like nothing happened. this has been going on for the last 3 years at least. *tr

I own a 2005 mazda tribute. when proceeding from a stop, the accelerator pedal will not depress. i have to coast to the side of the road. no matter how hard i stomped on the accelerator, it would not depress. this happens all the time especially in cold weather. i see where there was a recall for the same problem on 2004 models. please issue a recall on the 2005 to prevent accidents and possible death.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 mazda tribute. when proceeding from a stop light the accelerator petal would not depress . after she pulled over to the side of the road, she was able to depress the accelerator pedal. the vehicle was towed to the dealer and the throttle body was repaired at an expense of $ 325.00 dollars. the technician stated that this was a common failure for her model type. the failure mileage was 77000. the current mileage was 78000.

While driving our 2005 mazda tribute, most of the time when it is cold outside and other times when it is not, the gas pedal will be so stiff that it will be stuck in the non- accelerated position. my wife or i will have to pounce down on it a couple few times to get it to unfreeze and become operable again. (i'd say this has happened about 30 to 50 times in total since we bought the car brand new off the lot) today, december 1st. 2009, my wife was taking our daughter to school and the pedal froze in the non-accelerated position and she had to pull off the road to call me on her cell phone. i was feeling sick and in bed at the time of her call and got out of bed to go help her. the pedal stayed stuck for about five minutes. she kept putting pressure on it, but it would not come unstuck. when i got there, i pressed down on it and it was released. my wife keeps telling me this is dangerous and that we need to have it looked at. i have found recall info for these vehicles up to 2004 but not for 2005. will you please do something to help us? we are not alone. i found a website: www.aboutautomobile.com that has nine separate people complaining about the very same mechanical problem for the very same year, make and model. thank you for hearing me. *tr

The gas pedal sticks (up position). usually when it is cool out, though it has happened in warm temperatures. it happens when my foot has released the gas pedal and presses back onto it to accelerate. it does not go down. most times i have to slam my foot on it a couple of times before it works (accelerates) but there has been several times that hasn't worked and i have had to let my car coast of to the side of the road. this is very scary! happens several times a day especially when it is cooler outside. *tr

Gas pedal sticks when engine starts up in cold weather and continues to stick until the vehicle is warmed up (30 minutes into driving). causes car to jerk when starting from a stop. acceleration is compromised. *tr

In august 2004, i purchased a 2005 brand new mazda tribute suv. at the end of 2005, i started having trouble with my accelerator sticking. i took it to the dealer for repair and assumed that this problem would never occur again. but, to my dismay, it seems to occur every year, especially when the cold weather arrives. i have taken it to the dealer several times for repair and i was told that i would need to come back within a certain amount of miles to have the throttle cleaned so the accelerator will not stick. also, was told that this problem occurs with these type of vehicles. the throttle gets grime and gump in it and that's what causes the sticking. recently, on last friday, it began to stick again when i was driving into my neighborhood i could not get up on my driveway. i had to coast it along the side of the street and park it. whenever this occurs, i cannot press on the accelerator at all, it will not budge and my car tends to lose power and begins to slow down. on sunday evening, i was on the interstate when it occurred, very scary, i coast over into the right hand lane and over to the shoulder of the road, so i would not be hit from behind. on monday morning, on my way to work, i was at a stop light and when i went to pull off after the light turned green, it would not move. this is so ridiculous, as i have to go to the dealer each time and pay for something that should have been a recall. i don't know if others have complained about this or not, but i decided to because i am afraid for my safety as well as others. this is very dangerous. *tr

I own a 2005 mazda tribute and have had numerous incidents with the gas pedal sticking. this happens most often on cold fall mornings. the pedal will stick and not allow me to accelerate, general happening when i've been stopped at a red light, waiting to make a turn, or just as i go to accelerate while traveling straight. it has almost caused several accidents. i have taken the vehicle to the dealership twice without them able to solve the problem. this has happened every fall since 2005 and mazda will not recognize the problem. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 mazda tribute. while stopped at a light. she went to take her foot off of the brake and the vehicle accelerated and hit the vehicle in front of her. in addition, a loud noise was heard. the engine began to rev excessively high and the vehicle rear-ended the preceding vehicle twice with moderate impact. there were no warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. the police department was called to the scene and a report was filed. the front bumper of the contact's vehicle was damaged. the vehicle resumed operation and was taken to an authorized dealer, but they could not duplicate the failure. the insurance company and manufacturer were notified of the malfunctions. the failure and current mileages were 32,800. updated 4/28/09 *cn updated 04/30/09.*jb

Accelerator sticks especially in cool weather. when trying to accelerate from a the gas pedal has to be hit hard causing a sudden acceleration. this is extremely dangerous in wet conditions or in traffic. talked to mazda dealership and this was a problem with 2002 models and a recall was issued. *tr

My gas pedal sticks. i cannot press it down to accelerate. it seems to only do it when its colder out. i've almost been in numerous accidents because i go to pull out onto the road from a stop and cannot go faster than idle speed. almost every day that its colder out it sticks. until last week i owned a 4x4 that i drove in the winter so getting the mazda in to the shop was always on the backburner and mostly forgotten. the mazda was driven mostly in the warmer months. i received recall notices in the mail and was told by a car salesman it was for my issue so so l was never in a hurry to get it in. come to find out the recall is for the 04 tribute's speed control cable issue and now my warranty is up. so nothing was ever done about it. *tr

Gas pedal sticks. you have to press or stomp hard in order to get the pedal unstuck. this is bad and could cause an accident. will be taking in to have it checked out. read other reports of this says it may be carbon build up. not sure but something needs to be down if this is a wide spread problem. *tr

During the winter after the purchase of my new mazda tribute, the gas pedal was sticking-i could not push the pedal down it was sticking so bad. i talked to the dealership and they told me it was carbon build up. they did clean it for me. it stuck last winter too. now the gas pedal is sticking more than ever and they are telling me i need a whole new gas pedal assembly and estimated the cost at $191.00. i told them that this has been an ongoing problem and that someone is going to be killed over it. i have a 14 month old daughter and i am afraid to drive this vehicle. they told me they were not aware of any gas pedals sticking and it would not be covered under warranty. i then researched the sticking gas pedal and found out that it is a very wide spread problem. *tr

The gas pedal on my 2005 mazda tribute frequently locks up/ jams in place. this is a huge safety issue. it locks in the up position and will not release with any amount of pressure- sometime if i pull up on the pedal and then try to press back down, it will release, but not always. the pedal stays in the up position and will not do anything- the car cannot go leaving me stranded until it unlocks. two times now it has locked up for an extended period of time (more than a few minutes) while i was out on the road. luckily each time this happened i was able to get over, and it was not at a busy time of the day. nothing will unlock the pedal when it jams- pressing on it as hard as i can, trying gently, or turning the car off and back on. i have just had to wait for it to release. i have found a lot of other people are having the same problem and cannot believe no one has been killed because of this- it is a huge safety issue if this were to happen in traffic, an intersection, or on the highway- the car will not move, and the driver is powerless to do anything! i took it to the dealer and they said it needs a total throttle assembly replacement- but based on other people testimonials this will not solve the problem- multiple people have said they have had this replacement and it still locks in place, so i am wary to spend $400 for something that will not work. if this were to happen out on the road it could have potentially life threatening consequences- being unable to move your vehicle because the gas pedal is jammed is a very unnerving experience. *tr

I have a 2005 mazda tribute that the gas pedal sticks on. i have had this problem fixed twice and it is recurring. it is a big safety risk because you never know when it is going to stick. it typically starts out only happening in the morning but it progresses to any time throughout the day. you may be driving and stop or decelerate and then when you start to go you cant because the gas pedal is stuck. and it will take multiple tries of pressing it before it will go. i don't know what to do. i know i will take it back to the dealership they will fix it and charge me and then in a few months the problem will reoccur. please advise me on what to do. i also have a problem with the metal interior of the seat protruding under the fabric of the seat. *tr

Gas pedal sticking and difficult to depress. pedal/throttle body, sticks so that you must apply more and more pressure to the gas pedal until it breaks free and starts to accelerate the vehicle. this can cause the vehicle to lunge forward (or backward if in reverse). more of a nuisance at moment, but has become progressively worse in last month. *nm

I was driving at 50 mph and the gas peddle stuck, i was unable to accelerate, i had to slowly brake. it happened about 3 times, i took the 2005 tribute to the dealer where they were unable to find out why this was happening, but did tell me they had never heard of this before. thank god my children were not with me. *nm

Mazda tribute 05. gas pedal got stuck in the up position as i was turning in an intersection. luckily no cars coming parked on the grass. this happened 2xs. dealership just stated it needed a 150.00 throttle housing lubrication. did not have it done due to it was not covered on the warranty. after this time it happened 2 more time to me and just 2 days ago it happened to my husband with our kids in the car. luckily again no accident. *nm
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL - ACCELERATOR PEDAL

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 mazda tribute. while driving approximately 60 mph on the freeway the accelerator pedal became stuck and the contact almost drove onto a curb. she was able to slow the vehicle down; however, when she engaged the accelerator pedal, it failed to engage. the driver pumped the brake pedal and was then able to engage the accelerator pedal. the failure occurred more than 20 times. the failure recurred when she was driving 35 mph. when she tried to apply the brake pedal it didn't correct the failure. the failure mileage was 65,000 and the current mileage was 65,020.

The gas pedal on my 2005 mazda tribute sticks. i can not figure out a reason for this, or what causes it to do it. sometimes it sticks when trying to take off from a red light, sometimes it is if i am trying to accelerate out of a turn and sometimes it is just a basic attempt to accelerate going straight. i do notice though that if i already am accelerating and i push my foot onto the pedal more it will not stick, it only sticks when i have taken my foot completely off the accelerator, then try to push down on the pedal. *tr

I was stopped at a light behind a car and when the light changed i took my foot off the brake and the car took off out of control and smashed into the car ahead of me. the car was racing and i believe the gas pedal was stuck. i just wanted to add that mazda customer service was of no help to me. *tr

I own a 2005 mazda tribute with approximately 20,000 miles. for the past 6-8 months i have had issues with the gas pedal sticking. it is really random, so cannot pinpoint why or what conditions it happens. at first i just thought i wasn't pressing hard enough on the pedal, but it is happening more often and to the point where i actually have to slam it with my foot to make the car move. i transport children in my car and this is extremely dangerous. this morning i was making a turn and when i went to accelerate the car would not move. there was a car behind me which thankfully did not hit me, but it could have easily. when the gas pedal finally reacted the car accelerated very fast. after reading all the other complaints about this issue i think it seriously warrants being looked into further and having a recall notice issued. i do not feel safe anymore driving this vehicle since i cannot predict when or where the gas pedal will fail to respond. for a car with so few miles on it, and me being the original owner, i feel this is totally unacceptable and would be irresponsible of mazda to not take notice. after my latest incident, and reading all the other complaints regarding the same issue, i will be taking my vehicle in for inspection with mazda and hope this will be resolved. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 mazda tribute. the contact stated that the accelerator pedal randomly locks in place. she literally has to stomp on the pedal to get it to release. the failure has progressively worsened and she has to make 4 or 5 attempts to release the accelerator pedal. the weather and driving speed were not factors. the pedal was repaired, but began sticking again weeks later. the dealer was unable to duplicate the intermittent failure. the vin, engine size, and purchase date were unknown. the current mileage was 53,000 and failure mileage was 100.

I purchased the 2005 mazda tribute in dec '04. within one month, the gas pedal would stick in the up position and it would take significant effort to unlock the pedal, causing the vehicle to lurch forward. i took it in to have it looked at *still under warranty* and was told there was nothing wrong. however, it has continued to be a serious problem ever since. i've brought it back several times to the same dealership (royal moore mazda) and they tell me every time that they don't have any record of repairs (since they said they never found anything to begin with) and that they still can't find a problem. the issue is getting worse. i've been doing research and find hundreds of other mazda tribute owners having the exact same problem. at what point does this become a recall issue? i've narrowly missed being rear ended many times due to the gas pedal being stuck in place. and the only way to unlock it is to stomp on it. we need assistance before people die - if they haven't already and therefore haven't been able to tell anyone about why they died. this is a serious problem and it is getting significantly worse. the dealerships constantly deny there is a problem, and i honestly believe it's due to the bigger issue of all mazda tribute owners having the same issue. *tr

Accelerator pedal began sticking. i could not raise the pedal up or press it down. suddenly, car would take off. this happens at any time during driving. i have taken the car back to dealership twice for the same problem, all within 6 months time. i feel this is a safety issue with the vehicle. i was told it was carbon build up on the throttle body. i feel it is an issue with the tribute, other cars do not have this issue. all they did was clean the throttle body both times. they also said it was not covered under warranty although they did not charge me for the work done. i am leary about driving my car since i never know when it will start sticking again. *jb
