Defect SummaryMazda is recalling certain model year 2001 through 2006, and 2008, tribute vehicles equipped with 3.0l v6 engines and speed control. inadequate clearance between the engine cover and the speed control cable connector could result in a stuck throttle when the accelerator pedal is fully or almost-fully depressed. this risk exists regardless of whether or not speed control (cruise control) is used.
Consequence SummaryA stuck throttle may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop or slow the vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death.
Corrective SummaryMazda will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles by increasing the engine cover clearance, free of charge. the safety recall is expected to begin on, or before, august 6, 2012. remedy parts are expected to be available in mid-august 2012. until then dealers will disconnect the speed control cable as an interim remedy, if parts are not available at the time of an owner's service appointment. owners may contact mazda customer assistance center at 1-800-222-5500, option #6.
NotesMazda's recall campaign number is 6812g.owners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Vehicle traveling on interstate highway of major metropolitan city when smoke from engine brought vehicle and traffic to standstill. two fire trucks and police responded. oil found sprayed on highway and throughout engine compartment, with total loss of engine oil. vehicle taken to dealership service department for diagnosis. per dealership report, oil leak found emanating from a large gaping hole on bottom of engine block (v6) where it appears cylinder rod #5 disconnected and went through the bottom of the engine block and ruptured the oil filter, releasing all engine oil content. engine considered blown by dealership and given out of warranty, an $8500 engine replacement is required at the total expense of the owner given the vehicle is beyond the 36,000 mile engine warranty period, and therefore mazda is not responsible. driver experienced major trauma, smoke inhalation in compartment, and traffic backed up on interstate causing major delays of people to the local international airport. mazda unresponsive for issue and repair. vehicle engine was extensively tested by the state's department of motor vehicles in may 2012 for mandatory emission testing, and passed all testing standards, and documented. owner will now junk vehicle that was in excellent condition given extensive damage and at total loss to the owner. *tr

I was driving down the freeway at 65 mph when the car started jerking and threatening to stop in the middle of the freeway. the o/d off light started flashing on the console. i pulled off at the next exit and the light stopped flashing and the car stopped jerking. the minute i got back on the freeway it started again. i took the car to the mechanic and after closer inspection and repair it was discovered that the clutch was burned out in third gear. the cost of repair to the tune of approximately $2000.00 and four business days later. i have only had the car since the end of july 2011. no warning signs, nothing to indicate a problem was occurring. *tr

2006 mazda tribute. runs fine durring warm weather. at the slightest outbreak of cold weather, accelerator does not depress, unable to get any power from the engine. will freeze up at times while driving or not work at all. has been doing this for years, mazda refuses to acknowledge problem. has almost caused numerous accidents when accelrating around a turn due to loss of power. mazda has recalled previous model years for this problem but will not recall this model. please change that.

After coming to a stop at an uphill grade--approx a 20 degree incline, as soon as the brake is released, the vehicle rolls backwards. the only means to prevent the vehicle from rolling back is to press on the brake again or to immediately press hard on the gas pedal. however, although the vehicle eventually starts moving uphill, there is a significant amount of backward travel prior to the engine producing enough power to overcome the backward roll. this is a safety concern since there might be vehicles directly behind me when this occurs. fortunately, i have not had to stop at any steep grades that might cause the vehicle to rollback faster and further and possibly causing an accident. *jb

Vehicle makes a loud high pitch whining noise when engine is around 1000 rpm but disappears when the engine is below or above the 1000 rpm. this occurs regardless of whether the car is parked or during normal driving conditions so long as the engine is around 1000rpm. in addition to the high pitch whining noise, there is a noticeable amount of vibration that is felt. also, after coming to a full stop, without the gas pedal being pressed, after having revved down to about 650 rpm, the engine sometimes revs back up to about 1000 rpm and produce the whining noise. *jb
