 The office of defects investigation (odi) opened this preliminary evaluation to investigate allegations of engine crankshaft pulley harmonic balancer failure that could result in loss of power-steering assist.odi has received a total of 546 non-duplicative reports that allege engine crankshaft pulley harmonic balancer failure on all mercedes-benz vehicles using the subject component.the subject component failures are progressive in nature and only a small percentage of the complaints and warrant claims involved a failure that had progressed far enough to effect power steering performance (6 of 55 odi complaints reference increased steering effort).there have been no crashes or injuries related to the alleged defect.a safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances.see summary report attached for further detail.

 2000 mercedes benz e430. the consumer was in a head-on collision and airbags did not deploy. *dt the consumer stated an out of control vehicle hit the right front of her vehicle. the other driver's air bag deployed. a representative from mb stated the srs functioned as designed; it didn't deploy because the impact was below deployment threshold. the consumer then received a letter in the mail which stated the damage sustained by the vehicle was not severe enough to reach an air bag deployment. the letter also stated the seat belt would have restrained the consumer if it was worn properly. the consumer stated the seat belt did not restrain her properly. updated 05/12/10 *bf

 Petition for investigation into design defect of the cup holder on the 2000 e430 mercedes benz, cup holder located over shifting mechanism, coffee spilled and shut down entire electrical system. *ts the consumer was traveling in the middle lane of traffic when the liquid spilled. the car jerked and slowed down. the consumer was able to maneuver the vehicle to an entrance of a shopping center. the consumer paid $905.27 to repair the problem and feels that the cost should be absorbed by the manufacturer. the design has been redesigned in newer models so that the entire gear shift is covered with leather and does not expose any part of the mechanism. *nm

 I own a 2000 e430 mercedes and both rear window regulators have failed in the last 4 months. the car has 39,000 on the odometer. i consider this a safety problem because i transport my grandchildren in child seats in the rear and when the window fails, it fails in the down or open position. in each instance, i could not lock or secure the car.

 The vehicle has experienced five flat tires since the vehicle was purchased, the consumer believes there is a design problem, the service advisor explained to the consumer that the new 17 inch tires have less sidewall and makes the tire more susceptible to flats and recommended going to 16 inch tires, the consumer is requesting that the manufacturer replaces the wheels and tires. nlm
