FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Interior of the car smells like gas. when i pulled off the rear seat the bottom of the seat actually smells of fuel. i drove without the rear seat in place to dinner. after placing leftovers on the passenger seat the food i had brought in the house then smelled of gas in a 15 minutes drive. i contacted mb of bloomfield hills,mi and they stated there is no such recall for fuel smell issues even though i know of a 40 page post by mbworld that almost all e55 owners are experiencing this issue.

Filled vehicle with fuel and left sitting in garage. the next day, i noticed a strong fuel odor outside of vehicle and, upon opening the driver's door, was overwhelmed with fuel odor. after a quick online search, i found multiple references to fuel filter/pump leak. i pulled out the back seat to investigate and found that the driver's side fuel filter/pump assembly is flooded in and around the retaining nut. this is a major safety issue. *tr

Same situation identified in pe-12-001. filled vehicle with fuel and left sitting in driveway. the next day, i noticed a strong fuel odor outside of vehicle and, upon opening the driver's door, was overwhelmed with fuel odor. after a quick online search, i found multiple references to fuel filter leak. i pulled out the back seat to investigate and found that the driver's side fuel filter assembly is fine, but passenger's side has approx 1/2 inch of liquid fuel standing in the filter assembly. fuel has soaked through the cardboard/rubber cover and soaked the insulation above. it appears that the driver's side filter assembly was previously replaced (this was confirmed with service dept at dealership. they state that it was replaced in 2008 as part of tsb.), but the passenger's side, which is now leaking, is of a different (and i presume older) design. i have read the response from hogan/lovells dated 4/19/12 and would like to note that the tight seal described on page 2 which is allegedly created when the access ports are secured by six bolts and [a] gasket is not sufficient to prevent fuel vapor from entering the passenger compartment, nor is it sufficient to prevent liquid fuel from soaking through the gasket, and into the insulation on the underside of the rear seat. once the gasket and insulation above it are saturated with fuel, the interior of the car is unbearable and probably a severe fire risk. nhtsa is welcome to come observe this in person on my vehicle. *tr

I have a very strong fuel smell when i fill my gas tank past 1/2 a tank. i also notice when i visit the gas station and add fuel i will sometimes get a stumble and loss of power, almost like the engine wants to shut off. it is very concerning to me as i feel the fuel smell can be dangerous and possibly catch fire. i also think that there might be a related concern of once in awhile the car will not start, like if it is out of gas. *tr

This car has the fuel tanks replaced in the past under warranty and now, when you fill the tank up, it leaks and the interior is overcome with gas fumes. the car is virtually undrivable due to the fumes. upon removing the back seats, there appears to be standing fuel at the fuel sending units for each of the two tanks along with cracks in the plastic on the units. after letting the car sit with the windows open and baking soda in the back seat area for a week, i have been able to resume driving the vehicle although the fuel smell is still noticeable. the only resolution that i could find for this, outside of replacing the tanks again (mercedes has clearly stated they will not cover this as the car is out of warranty) is to fill the car up with only 3/4 tank of gas, being careful to never fill the tank completely. this appears to be a manufacturers defect and a serious safety issue that must be addressed. due to the high cost of new tanks/sending units, i am not in a position to replace them with what may end up being yet another defective part from mercedes benz. the proposed resolution would be for mercedes to replace these parts with components that is re-designed and will not fail with the frequency of the current oem parts. *tr

Reference nhtsa action number for multiple complaints on same issue pe12001 anytime the vehicle is filled over 3/4 of a tank of fuel, a very strong fuel odor is present inside of the car, outside of the car, and fuel puddles around the fuel sending unit under the rear seat. sometimes the smell is so strong, that my family and i fear that the vehicle is no longer safe to drive due to the strong fumes of gas inside of the vehicle which i am sure is a serious fire hazard and accident waiting to happen. this is a very common problem, that mercedes knows about, and they need to issue a recall to get this taken care of just as they did on the more recent chassis http://www.leftlanenews.com/mercedes-recalls-5800-cars-over-fire-hazard.html. *tr

My car starting smelling strongly of gasoline in the interior. i brought it to a local repair center and had the sending unit gasket replaced. about 2 weeks later, the smell had not abated and i had the same repair re-performed under repair warranty. this was again not successful. i then researched the issue in greater detail online and found many people complaining of the same issue. i brought it to the mercedes dealership, where they ultimately replaced the sending unit/hoses at a cost of about $1200. they confirmed there was a pool of gasoline just under the rear seat. this issue has caused gasoline to seep into the back seats. *tr

Tl-the contact owns a 2004 mercedes-benz e55. the contact stated that he noticed a strong odor of gasoline when inside or outside the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where they advised him that the fuel system sending unit was fractured and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired for the fuel system sending unit. approximately 1.5 years later, the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where they advised him that the opposite fuel sending unit had now become fractured, as well as the fuel sending unit that was previously replaced. the manufacturer was contacted and advised him that they would cover the cost of the new unit but the older unit that was fractured for the second time would have to be covered by the contact. the failure mileage was unknown. the current mileage was approximately 67,400. kmj

I walked in my garage and smelt a bad fuel smell coming from my car. after review, i determined it was my fuel sending unit that was leaking from the top and fuel was rolling down the outside of the gas tank. after looking online to see if others with the same vehicle have had this problem and to my findings, this is a normal thing that happens with these vehicles. i know this is not safe for the environment, so i thought i should file this complaint. they should take better precautions for this not to happen. now we are stuck having to pay a lot of money to get this replaced or fixed, when this is not a normal wear and tear item on the car. i believe they should have a recall on this item, because it is unsafe and hazardous.

Today i start the car and the check engine appears. i went to the dealer and scan the car. the code was p0456 and we notice a hard smell of fuel. then i entered the code in google and began to search about this problem and saw that a few members have the same problem and they put a complain on it. so im filling the same complaint that they do. *tr

There is a strong fuel odor inside and outside the car after fueling. the odor will last until the fuel gauge gets below the full level. the dealer said it was a known issue but no recall has been ordered yet. they told me it would be a $2000 repair to replace the fuel tank and both fuel senders. i have no choice but to wait for a recall to fix this issue caused by a violation of safety and epa laws. *tr

Leak from the fuel sending unit. this is a very common issue with this car with many complaints to the nhtsa. mercedes wants close to $2000 for repair this is a factory defect including fuel tank and sending units. as my children's car seat is above this gas leak, this poses a very dangerous situation. *tr

When filling up my vehicle with fuel i have noticed that for the first few days there is a strong fuel smell coming from inside and outside the car. i work in the automotive field by trade and upon short investigation i have noticed that raw fuel is leaking from the top of the fuel sending unit and pooling up under the back seats where the access panels are located. this raw fuel can and will drip onto a hot exhaust pipe creating a not only dangerous but potentially fatal scenario. i have been forced to keep the fuel level at half full to prevent any spill over outside the car and into the cabin. what i have read on enthusiast sites i am one of hundreds that have claimed this same issue. *tr

Fuel sender leaking. filled gas tank, drove on freeway for approx 120 miles. arrived at destination to find that the rear seat cushion is warm to the touch - lifted up rear seat foam cushion, found that the metal underneath is too hot to touch with bare hands. removed access cover to fuel sender, found fuel leakage. *tr

When i fill the gas tank with fuel ( 91 octane gas), there is a strong odor of said gasoline. when i park it in my closed garage, the smell is strong enough that i'm afraid a spark from the water heater, or even the electric motor that opens the garage could trigger an explosion. simply opening the door that leads from the garage to the house, fills much of the in house area with the smell of gasoline. driving is also a concern, due to the fact that i don't know where the gas is leaking from, (other than somewhere on the gas tank) or if it could drip on a hot part or come in contact with an electrical component. once the fuel tank is below 2/3, the odor drops significantly. note: i had this same problem when the car was one year old and, after 5 tries by the dealer, was finally diagnosed and fixed under warranty. *tr

Reference nhtsa action number: pe12001 after filling the gas tank, a smell of gas was noticed in the garage. upon backing out of the garage onto my sloped driveway, gas was observed to be leaking from under the car onto my driveway and street. after about 50 miles of driving, the smell of gas no longer was present and no leak was noticed. *tr
