Reference nhtsa action number pe12001. 1st incident (2007), heavy fuel smell inside my car, noticed a lot of gas inside car underneath rear seats, and a lot of gas leaking underneath driver side rear tire and how fuel was leaking on exhaust by rear tire. fletcher jones mercedes dealership las vegas fixed it under warranty via replaced fuel pump. 2nd incident (2009), exact same thing, dealer replaced fuel pump and this time also installled entire new fuel tank. 3rd incident (march 2012), same thing as 1st incident. this time i took it to an independent shop and they showed me the defective leaking fuel pump. i paid out of pocket to have it fixed this 3rd time. my 2005 e55 amg is a station wagon, with 2 rear seat child seats, right over the leaking fuel pump and leaked fuel. it is scary to know that if the fuel ever leaked on the exhaust while i am driving with my wife and twin 6 years son and daugther that there could be a fire...god forbid if my wife was driviing my car and kids if it ever happened. that is why she is not allowed to drive my car. i can assure you that there are many other e class owners that had and/or am having the exact same problem.

After filling up the gas tank in my 2005 mercedes benz e55 up with gasoline, there are overwhelming gasoline fumes that engulf the interior and is also prevalent from the outside of the car. when entering my closed garage after a gas fill up, the entire garage is engulfed by the very strong and distinct odor of gasoline. this is certainly not normal and indicates that gasoline is leaking somewhere. additionally, according to my mercedes benz service advisor and a carfax report, the first owner (i am the second owner) had the fuel system repaired when the car had 20,000 miles on it. to further the description, please refer to the current investigation with the nhtsa action number: pe12001 as reference to what is happening with my vehicle. thank you for your assistance in this critical matter of saftey, my 2 and 4 year old son's sit in the back seat where the faulty fuel tanks and fuel delivery systems are located. additionally, i frequently have headaches from the strong gasoline odors within the cabin and am afraid that one day i may pass out from the fumes.

I filled my car up with gas this morning, and when i got home and parked in the garage, there was an incredibly strong smell of gas inside the car. i did some research and found that it may be the fuel sending unit with the recall from 2008. i lifted up the rear seat and, sure enough, there was gasoline filling the well around the driver's side fuel sending unit. my car had the recall work completed in 2008, so i called the dealer and told them that the same thing has happened again. i asked them if they were going to cover it since the recall problem obviously wasn't fixed, and the service manager said, once recall work is completed, that's it. it's considered done, and any future repairs are the owner's responsibility. this is absolutely unacceptable. fuel leaking into the cabin and also down around the gas tank onto the hot exhaust is a huge safety hazard. is it going to take an explosion and somebody getting killed or hurt for mercedes to fix this problem?! this needs to be handled by mercedes immediately. i'm amazed by how many others have reported this.

Fuel smell on fillup. this vehicle has previously had the factory recall performed

After filling up the car with gas, a terrible oder of gas would permiate the whole interior of the car. once the car was parked and you walked around the outside of the car you could smell gas as if it was leaking out of the car onto the ground. i would look under the car and not find any gas dripping on the ground? i actually got scared with how bad the oder was that i took the car into my local mercedes benz dealer. i was told that there was a defective part on the top of the gas tank which is located under the rear seat. i paid to have it repaired.

After filling up the gas tank, i noticed extremely strong gasoline fumes emanating from the rear passenger side of the car. after doing some internet research, i learned of this common problem and wanted to make sure to note that these dangerous fumes which overwhelmed me when i stored the car in a garage overnight. i did not notice any fuel dripping out of the car onto the ground but that's not to say there wasn't any when i filled up. i take this very seriously and have seen dozens of similar stories about this that frighten me as a driver at the very least. this is in reference to nhtsa action number: pe12001. thank you.

After filling up the vehicle and driving for a short period of time ,i parked the car in my garage . when i came back to the car the whole garage smelled like gasoline. after further inspection gas was leaking from the fuel sending unit. i went to the dealer and asked for assistance with the repair due to the fact that the car has always been serviced by mercedes and was denied any financial help with the repair. this is clearly a defective fuel sending unit and possible gag tank failure that mercedes should repair as a warranty claim but they are refusing to take responsibility .

During april/march of 2011, i noticed after filling up the car fully of 18 gallons at the gas station, the next two days the car would smell like gas when parked in my 2 car garage. once i stepped into the garage, there was an overwhelming smell of gas. googled this on the web and found mbworld.org where common cases for the e class model. pulled the rear back seats and saw that gas was pooling around the rim of the fuel sending unit. somehow fuel had seeped up past the gasket/unit. having a less than 2yr old sitting right above the rear back seat, i felt this needed to be taken care of asap. took to american service center, arlington, va mercedes dealer. i found a tsb regarding the fuel sending unit that would be replaced free of charge. vin was pulled and showed this already was done on my vehicle. basically i had to pay out of pocket $956 to get a new fuel sending unit put in. so far no fuel smells, but am aware that this is just a quick fix. my 2006 e500 4matic that i also own is starting to have this smell now when filled up. will be taking it to the dealer as well, but i have cpo warranty from the dealer which will cover the repairs.

Upon filling the tank with gasoline, heavy fumes can be smelled inside the interior of the vehicle. as well as the outside of vehicle if it is parked in confined spaces i.e. my garage. i also noticed fuel leaking under the vehicle as well. this is a problem that was recalled by mercedes once before. they fixed it back in 2007 under a recall when it was owned by the previous owner. i have owned the vehicle since april 2011 and this problem occurred again in my ownership around the approximate month of november 2011. i have already taken it to a shop and have paid thousands of dollars to have this issue addressed but according to my mechanic the fuel system is failing in multiple spots. now the vehicle sits. please help me get mercedes to fix this very costly and potentially life threatening issue resolved. thank you for your time and interest in my families and my safety. i sincerely appreciate any help you can offer.

2005 mercedes e55. vehicle has a strong gas smell. found gaskets at fuel senders leaking again. there was a recall to repair this issue in 2008 seems like it didn't fix the issue.

I own a 2005 amg e55 mercedes benz. the fuel sending unit is leaking gas into the car under the rear seats. this was a recall issue in 2008. car was taken to mercedes and they said they fixed it. now i am getting the same gas leak and fumes into the car. when i called mercedesa and asked what they fixed they said they dont know if they fixed the left or the right side. no one wants to take responsibility for this issue. this car was purchased from the us specificallt atlanta georgia.

I smell strong gas odor at rear driver side, when i get the full tank of gas. i went to a shop and lift the car that i can see the gas leak around the tank. i just want to say this kind of leaking very dangerous, because under the tank is exhaust pipe. that would be fired when too much gas leaking and no mil light come on. also no any recall for the problem when i call to ask the mb dealer.

My w211 began to smell of fuel while parked in my garage. several weeks later, i awoke to a very strong gas smell in my garage. when i moved the car out, a puddle of gas was beneath my car and it literally poured fuel out as i backed it down the driveway. i took the car in for repair at the dealer and they replaced two seals and declared it good. the next day, i filled the car again and it smelled just as bad as before. the dealer replaced the seals and the pump modules and it took over a month to get the smell out of the car. approximately six weeks later, i'm not noticing a faint smell of gas yesterday and a stronger smell today. i discussed with mercedes benz usa and they said that the car was repaired under a 'technical service bulletin' in 2008, but it's becoming clear that the problem is not going away. the fuel pump modules are in sealed compartments underneath the passenger seat, which communicates with the interior. additionally, fuel can pool in this area - with the electrical connections for the fuel pumps.

Whenever i fill the gas tank strong smell of gas in the cabin of the car. i removed the rear seat to find the insulation barrier soaked in gas and inside the maintenance panel where the fuel filter assy. on the lh side of the car, just beneath the lh passenger seat cushion, had a puddle of gas still present.

2005 mercedes benz e55 fuel sending unit was spraying gas into compartment which is underneath the driver side back passenger seat. there was a recall on the car already and it was replaced and failed in just 18months. brought the car to mercedes of freehold and they said been changed under recall and they cant do anything for me now that the new part has failed. ended up buying the part out of pocket and replacing it because it was not under warranty any more. gas being sprayed under the back passenger seat is not safe at all! not to mention my cabin was filled with gas fumes.

Reference nhtsa action# pe12001 fuel smell strongest in left rear seat area. removed seat, opened cover over fuel pump and found fuel sitting exposed. removed the sitting fuel, and did research. found many such complaints that match my situation. if i don't fill the fuel tank for an extended time, the fuel smell dissipates, but any time i fill the fuel tank, the noxious fuel smell returns within hours and is obvious as soon as opening the left rear door. previous owner had similar problem and had fuel pump/sender replaced apr. 2012 costing $1000. *tr

Complaint # pe12001 i noticed occasional fuel smell originally 2-3 months ago. initially smells were mild, now smells are noxious and getting worse. at my last 10k miles oil change, discussed the problem and progression getting worse with my mercedes certified mechanic. the rear seat was removed, to find the upper part of fuel cell under passenger seat, with deterioration of upper part of fuel cell plastic. there was actually a gas puddle visible that had seeped through the top of fuel cell/sending unit. very dangerous situation, risk of fire, and also causing headaches from noxious smell of gas !!! what can be more dangerous, gas leaking, and seeping into the interior cabin of an automobile ??? please intervene with this dangerous problem with a recall before deaths occur to a very dangerous problem. obviously a manufacturer defect in substandard parts purchased to a fuel cell from manufacturer mercedes benz !! this same problem has affected many mercedes benz vehicles. thanking you in advance [xxx] *tr

There wasn't actually a particular incident, per se. my complaint is about the fuel tank in my car leaking. when i fill the car al the way up with fuel, gas leaks out onto the suspension, undercarriage and the ground. this is due to a stress fracture that has developed on the top of the tank by the fuel sending unit. a very high number of other owners of this make, model and range of years (2003 - 2006) of my car have this problem. this is a very serious issue that could lead to deaths, injury and unnecessary environmental pollution. i was told to reference nhtsa action number: pe12001. *tr

This complaint is in reference to nhtsa action #pe12001. during 2009, at approximately 31k miles on the vehicle (2005 mercedes benz e55), a strong fuel smell/odor was evident in the passenger cabin. the smell was strongest at the rear seat driver's side. this issue was brought to the attention of a service advisor at a mercedes benz authorized service center. an open recall was indicated to replace the driver and passenger side fuel sender units in the fuel tank, located below the rear seat. the recall was performed at 31,300 miles and while the fuel tank was not replaced, the problem did appear to be resolved. during 2012, at approximately 50k miles, the same strong fuel smell/odor in the passenger cabin reoccurred, subsequent to the factory warranty expiration date. upon closer inspection, after removing the rear seat bottom and driver and passenger side access panels, it was immediately apparent fuel had collected/pooled in a cavity on top of the fuel tank where the driver side fuel sender unit is located--ultimately confirming some type of fuel leak. when inspecting the passenger side fuel sender unit, the area appeared to be dry with no fuel leaking on that side. after this inspection was completed, the pooled fuel on the driver's side fuel tank was removed and the surrounding area was cleaned and dried before reinstalling the access panels and rear seat bottom. currently at 54k miles, the fuel leak has been somewhat lessened/avoided by only filling the fuel tank to no more than 3/4 capacity (or, about 15 gallons out of 21). there remains, however, a slight fuel smell/odor reoccurring during instances when the vehicle has been parked outside for extended periods in the summer heat. also, when the fuel tank is filled to capacity, the strong fuel smell/odor immediately returns and again requires the unsettling task of cleaning up the leaked fuel. *tr
