This is a written complain regarding a company recall on replacing head gasket for all mercury cougar (3.8v engine) 1994 and up. i own a 1993 mercury cougar xr7 3.8v engine who has the same engine problem as the 1994, but the mercury company decided to have a recall on all 1994 models only. well, i feel this should be reconsider since i had the same problem appeared to my car and had to take it to a dealer who informed me that this particular engine has a manufacture defect in the design. however, they couldnt do it under the manufacture recall due to the year of the car begin 1993 and not 1994. i had to pay $1000.00 out of my bucket to have it done by a mercury/lincoln dealer, which i felt it was unfair to be getting penalized for something i had no control of. i took very good care of my car and my engine had only 63,000 miles on it. i had explained to the dealer that the head gasket blown without giving me any sign or indications. they confirmed that there was nothing at my part that i should have done to prevent this from happening. they are very much aware of this particular engine problem, but still cannot do it on the company expense. in light of this, due to the head gasket gotten blown, it damaged other parts in car which the dealer gave an estimated cost of $800.00. i really cannot afford to spend this money on something that the mercury company is very aware of if and even admits that they have a design problem on all 3.8v engine.*ak

Paid 3,200.00 for a used car followed my girlfriend home and noticed smoke coming from muffler and it had a sweet smell.the dealer told me the machanic said there was nothing wrong with the car when we baught it and the next day after we baught the car it was overheating so we called the dealer (larry)but he wasnt there and the guy i talked to said not to worry they'll fix it or replace it with another car but to call back and talk to larry first so we called the next day and he said he couldnt help us but offered to fix it but we had to pay for it.feeling we already got screwed by theese people we werent going to risk it. so we finaly took the car to another machanic and he said the car had a broken head gasket, and that the engine had to be replaced so now i paid him 850.00 for another engine and 550.00 for labor (so to make a long story short we were sold a car with a busted head gasket and were lied to. *ak

On february 5, 2001 after previously paying crossroads lincoln mercury dealer in indianapolis in january of 2000 $1140.82 for head gasket repair at 59039 miles, now my car with 62913 miles is back at the same dealer for another coolant leak. the dealer has confirmed it is the engine front cover gasket leaking. i discovered ford has recalled 1996 and 1997 cougars for this same problem but not 1993 cougars. same story with the head gasket repair not being covered by ford's extended warranty on the 3.8l v-6 engines for 1993 owners. i am in the process of sending a letter to william ford at ford motor company along with the attorney general of indiana. i will be sending copies to your organization and the center for auto safety.*ak

In fall of 1999, took car to two different local mechanics with tempterature gauge getting hot, leaking antifreeze, rough idling, white smoke. spent over $800 for tune up, new parts, winterizing and so forth. in january, 2000 symptons reoccured until engine locked up - took to crossroads lincoln mercury - charged $1200 for head gasket repair. dealer informed me many cougars have been coming in with same problem but no recall has been issued. i was given a 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty (whichever comes first) and now on january 30th, 2001 noticed the same symptons again. have only driven car approx 5,000 miles since first repair but my 12 months expired by a week. now car has same symtpons and again will cost me $1200 to have same problem remedied. have tried to see if recall is in effect but can not find any info on it. i feel ford should be held responsible for a recall considering the number of complaints listed in this complaint database concerning blown head gaskets. *ak

Head gasket replaced (both banks) three garages stated the head gasket problem was common in most 3.8 litre engines. master mechanic considers this to be a quality issue, and a recall should be issued. mechanic further stated that the japanese would not let this problem go past their production line and the german's would completely throw out any repeated mechanical defects. this is the fourth ford/mercury automobile i have owned and the mechanical problems i have incurred are usually repeated year-to-year/model-to-model. i have saved all receipts for repairs for all ford vehicles owned and will send a letter with copies to ford's president.

Ford motor co. finally agreed to pay all but $535 to rebuild the motor, however they rebuilt it with defective parts. so, at 80,000 miles the motor needs to be rebuilt again because it is have the exact problems again. i personally know at least 20 people who have had the same problem with the 3.8 motor. i also know that a class action law suite was dissmissed regarding the 3.8 motor which was repesenting thousands of of owners. *ak

Probably not the right place to search for answers, but we have sunk alot of money into something we feel ford new about and did nothing about. the 3.8 engine should have been investigated.

We bought a 1993 mercury cougar 3.8l v6 new, took excellent care of it. in dec. 1999, at 68,432 miles, 2 head gaskets had blown. the bill was $1200. we decided to keep the car since we had already put in $1200 in brand new ford rocker panels in 6/99 that had rusted out. well, sept. 15, 2000 at 72,943 miles, not even 5,000 miles later, the head gaskets were leaking and had to be replaced again! the bill came to $600. this is outrageous!! how could ford, knowing all the time that they had a problem with this engine, refuse to entend warranty coverage to all the models this engine was in? (thunderbirds, tauruses, windsar minivans, mercury sables, & lincoln continentals). there's an actual 3.8l ford motor company defective head gasket complaint and info site. isn't that telling you that there's a major problem with these engines? why are they giving out a $4,000 coupon towards a new ford, merc, or lincoln product to only a select few? they are the same engine!! our reliability is gone, we'll never buy a ford again! *ak
