Defect SummaryVehicle description: passenger vehicles. the speed control deactivation switch can develop a resistive short in the electrical circuit that could potentially result in an underhood fire. a fire is possible both when the vehicle is running and when the vehicle engine is off. also, the short could disable the speed control system or cause the brake light fuse to open.
Consequence SummaryA fire can originate in the left front underhood area.
Corrective SummaryDealers will install a new speed control deactivation switch and connector shell. owner notification began may 20, 1999.

 Tl*- the contacts son owns a 1993 mercury grand marquis. the current and failure mileage were 65,000. the contact was inside her home when she heard a boom, and she went outside saw the vehicle in flames. the vehicle had been parked for a day and a half. weather was clear and sunny. the fire department came to the scene and made a report, and determined that it was cruise control switch that caused the fire. the fire marshal informed her that the vehicle was under recall -campaign id 99v124000. *ak the consumer has provided pictures of the vehicle and also the report from the fire department. updated 06/06/07 *tr

 I looked into our garage through a widow in our entryway and saw flames coming from the front of our 1993 mercury grand marquis. the car, garage and contents, and entryway and contents were a complete loss.

 The vehicle was parked and without warning the vehicle caught on fire and burned down the house. the fire department was called to extinguish the fire. the vehicle was towed and was declared totaled by the insurance company. *ak the fire originated on the driver's side of the engine compartment. the consumer mentioned that the he experienced problems with the ignition system, abs system and shifter. there was grinding when the vehicle was stopped and the gear shift would not shift into drive once the vehicle was started. the abs pump, motor relay, brake lamp switch and switch wiring harness were replaced. (there were two purchase dates: 7/16/1996 and 8/09/1996) *sc *jb
 1) electrical system fails with erratic operation of lights and severe stalling. 2) brake system fails with pedal going to floor. unable to detect fluid loss.

 While driving at 65-70 mph ignition malfunctioned, causing momentary hesitations. problem happened intermittently, and ignition failed 30 to 40 times. although dealer says they know nothing about a defect with the thick film ignition module, news reports say that the tfi is mounted where engine heat on a hot day can cause it to fail. *ak

 Problem with engine stalling/ had starter replaced on two occasions, and problem appeared. to be reoccurring. believed starter will need to be replaced for the third time. all repairs were done by a independent repairs shop. feel free to provide any further information on this matter.*ak

 Tl* -the contact stated that after parking the 1993 mercury grand marquis the vehicle caught on fire under the drivers side portion of the hood. the fire department was called and the fire was extinguished. a fire department report will be available.*ak

 Location of the wiring harness to the starter is all the way on the bottom, which is unprotected from water/dampness, etc, which results in corrosion causing the vehicle to stall. the dealer/manufacturer are aware of the situation because a improved starter and harness were designed, but there is not a recall. the vehicle will start up, but the corroded harness has to be cleaned from time to time. *ak

 While the vehicle was in the parking gear, with ignition running, smoke started coming from under the dash by the wiring harness. vehicle was driven to the dealership the next day. vehicle was checked out, and the brake on and off switch was replaced, which kept the vehicle from coming out of park. consumer still experiencing electrical problems. please provide any further details. *ak
