Odi has received 227 owner complaints alleging a sudden and unexpected loss of motive power due to an internal transmission failure in the subject vehicles.of those complaints, 124 can be attributed to the torque converter output shaft splines stripping causing a sudden loss of power to the drivetrain.the remaining 103 complaints experienced a loss of motive power but the specific internal failure cause within the transmission is not known.odi has upgraded the investigation to an engineering analysis (ea09-016) to continue its assessment of the scope, frequency and safety-related consequences of the alleged defect.

POWER TRAIN - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - CONTROL MODULE (TCM, PCM)
PE10033FORD MOTOR COMPANY08/23/201007/15/2011Engine Stalling
The subject vehicles suffered from a design issue whereby water could run down onto the cowling under the hood and located in the area of the windshield wipers and then drip onto a computer module, the powertrain control module (pcm), which could be manifested in a variety of symptoms depending on which part of the circuit board became wet or which of the connector pins shorted out.in addition to causing an engine to stall, which may or may not then restart, the water intrusion could also cause the transmission to shift poorly, the vehicle to have erratic power, a malfunction indicator light to come on, or result in an inability to start the vehicle, an inability to shift the vehicle into either forward or reverse. also the problem could cause a higher than normal idle rpm in park, or for the radio to malfunction, or the interior lights to stay on.during this investigation odi was concerned with the effect of the engine stalling or a drastic and sudden loss of power either of which may create a safety risk.in reviewing the actual number of these types of incidents, collectively referred to here as engine stalls, the number was found to be below what would be considered a defect trend.for example, the number of engine stalls identified in ford's warranty claims for the model year (my) 2004 subject vehicles, the my with the most failures, was 200 out of population of 125,865, for a failure rate of 0.16%.the one crash recorded by a complainant to nhtsa, voq 10311522, alleged that the engine stalled, due to water intrusion into the pcm, while the road was turning causing her to go off the road and according to the police report the vehicle then hit an embankment and a tree stump. ford reported in their response that there were three alleged crashes but none of these were validated as being caused by a problem with water intrusion into the pcm causing a stall.accordingly this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will continue to monitor complaints and other information relating to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles and take further action in the future if warranted.

The vehicle was going at 35mph, all of a sudden there was loss of motive power without warning, engine would rev up but car would not speed-up instead started slowing down. heavy traffic, but other drivers were very considerate when they noticed the emergency light turned on and that my vehicle not moving with the traffic. pulled into left lane to pass traffic & tachometer spun but there was no power - vehicle was coasting with what appeared to be no connection between the engine & the transmission. i was able to steer the vehicle to outer lane with the momentum already built up and made it to the parking at gas station. tried after 10 min.. gears would shift fine, engine would accelerate fine but the vehicle would not move. vehicle had to be towed to home 10 miles away. upon investigation i discovered there was already a recall issued for in nov. 2012 for mercury monterey 2004 transmission and torque converter issues resulting in sudden loss of motive power. i did not receive any notification from ford company about this recall.

My 2004 mercury monterey had a recall job done on the transmission replacing the torque converter approximately 2 months ago. i was driving home from church today and the transmission stopped working. my family ended up stranded. it was lucky for us that the street wasn't busy so that we didn't have an accident. *tr

This vehicle was included in a safety recall by nhtsa (12v006). the part involved (torque converter output shaft) in the recall failed in march 2011, long before the recalled was initiated. at the time, i was told by a ford service center that the transmission failed, even though it was only the torque converter that had failed. the whole transmission had to be replaced and this was done. when the recall notice was received in the mail and i went to ford service center, they gave us a refund for the amount that was authorized to replace just the torque converter, not the whole repair. since the torque converter was replaced before the recall, the unsafe part is still in my vehicle. ford now refuses to replace the unsafe part because they said that nhtsa agreed to only authorize one fix per vehicle. i would have to pay to get the vehicle made safe. i would like to know how this can be the case for a safety recall? the older, unsafe part can fail at any time, just like it did the first time when it failed on the entrance ramp to a congested interstate highway at rush hour with school carpool children in the vehicle. nhtsa should authorized an amendment to the recall to replace all defective parts. *tr

2004 monterey was serviced by ford/mercury dealer per recall 12v-006 as safety prevention repairs at 110677 mileage between 08/14/12 and 08/17/12. invoice states 11s25 torque converter replacement was completed. vehicle was returned to customer . less than five months, on 01/12/13, at 112360 mileage, upon arriving home, the vehicle lost forward and reverse power while attemping to turn it around. it is difficult to understand because the safety recall notice 11s25 / nhtsa recall 12v-006 states that it may be possible for your vehicle to lose forward and reverse power while driving due to worn splines in the transmission torque converter. however it would seem unlikely that anything would be worn within the short time period and low mileage indicated as follows: note that the 11s25 torque converter replacement was completed less than five months before, (08/17/12 until 01/12/13). also note that the mileage difference between the dealer repair invoice (110677) and the point of forward and reverse power loss (112360) is only 1683 miles. *tr

I was driving at 35 mph and all of a sudden my engine started revving and it was like i was in neutral. i coasted to the side of the road. the engine was running fine, i just had no drive or reverse. i only have 70,000 miles on it. it seems like this is a recurring item with the mercury monterey minivans. it's a good thing i wasn't on the highway. my car was towed to a shop where they told me the transmission is shot. i then towed it to a ford dealer and am waiting for the damage..... *tr

My vehicle lost engine power while in drive and came to a complete stop in the middle of lanes during rush-hour traffic. also lost reverse had to be towed. since the incident, i discovered there was a recall for this exact issue and attempted to resolve directly through ford. i've submitted receipts for services performed and ford is non-responsive to my requests for reimbursement. *tr

I have 2004 mercury monterey. about 2 years ago my transmission failed at 67k and had to replace out of my pocket. now there started another big issue in this car. lately i park the van outside in the driveway. this happened several occasions since it started (especially in rainy days). i could start the car, but can not shift the vehicle into either forward or reverse. all kind of warning lights popup in this situation. sometimes vehicle move few yards and then stall. sometimes radio does not work. then all of sudden when the day is sunny, van drives perfectly normal with no issues. this is extremely frustrated, i thought i purchased a good vehicle from the ford, but not anymore!! i consulted my local mechanic and he thinks somehow computer get wet and that cause the problem. some days it drives 10-20 miles in highway and the problem start again with a sudden power loss. this is extremely dangerous in driving with south florida traffic. how come rain water seep into the computer? this is no doubt that this issue must be due to poor design by the car manufacturer. nhtsa should investigate this seriously since vehicle owners do not have any resolution due to bad design issue. *tr

About 5 or 6 months ago we started to notice that my car is jerking when it drives - especially when accelerating and going up hill, but will do it at other times as well. it seems as if maybe the transmission is slipping or something is not 'catching' as it's trying to accelerate. we received a recall notice about the power train so we assume that this may have to do with the recall, but are still waiting for word of a fix for this issue. *tr

I was driving on pa turnpike and without warning van stopped moving. loss power to move forward or backward. very scary! almost struck in rear by tractor trailer. had to sit on turnpike with 3 children in van and wait for a flatbed to bring us to safety. found out that there was to be recall on my vehicle. the recall letters were due to be mailed out in the 2nd quarter of 2012 (i never received one, and i am an original owner). ford is recalling van due to the torque converter output shaft failing, resulting in sudden loss of power. i am now understanding that prior vans that have had a replacement part have also failed for a second time. i am very scared about diving this van again. *tr

Powertrain: front wheel bearings went out (squeeling sound) in 2006 with 8k miles on vehicle. a tsb was out for that issue and the wheel bearings(2) were replaced. the front bearings went out again in 2009 at about 27k miles. the vehicle was covered by a ford esp. the dealer said that they couldn't hear the noise - the noise would come and go - so no repair was done at that time. i have the repair order stating no problem found. now at 35k miles the bearing noise has become much worse and much more frequent but now the warranty is over and it will cost about $700 to repair. what kind of poorly made bearings are these? body: in 2009 i noticed rust at the left rear wheel well area and it is now coming through the left quarter panel. there is also rust at the right rear wheel well area although it has not gone through the right quarter panel. left and right front doors also rusting at the bottom facing the passenger compartment.

On 2/24/2012 i was merging into highwat traffic. the transaxel light came on and the van had difficulty shifting from what i thought was 2nd gear in to 3rd, just below 60 mph and at about 5500 rpm. i found this odd, so i eased off of the gas. tried to accelerate again while the light was flashing and it would still not shift. after pulling off the highway at an exit. i turned off the car and restarted it. the light disappeared. i drove away with out incident. i proceded to pick up my child and then went to fill my gas tank about 2 miles away. when i hit just over 40mph the light came on again. while filling up on gas i read about a potential recall on this particular model's torque converter, so i went immediately to my local ford dealer. he was aware of the potential recall (even though consumers weren't informed), and reiterated something i had read about the part not being available until the 2nd quarter. we agreed that i would have my car there on monday morning for a closer look. monday came and the service associate called. he explained that they could not recreate my problem in a road test. he said there was an error code in the computer's memory, but the code was not related to the torque converter. from here, i guess they drained the transmission fluid and said that there was water in it. he told me that they would have to either repair my transmission (@$4000) or replace mine with a with a rebuilt one (@$3200). mind you, the van only has less than 43,000 miles on it. i was told by an independent mechanic that the $4000 price is to scare you into being more comfortable with the $3200 price., but that both prices sounded steep. in the end, i bought the rebuilt transmission anyway, because it had a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty that the independent mechanic could not provide. since then i've read about a water /transmission issue that nhtsa is investigation

Splines related to the torque converter located in the automatic transmission sheared off unexpectedly while driving. transmission had to be completely rebuilt due to debris that circulated throughout the system. in addition to that, while the transmission was being rebuilt it was determined that water had also been entering the transmission and contaminating the fluid which is believed to have caused the addhesive on the bands to deteriorate and break apart.

(2008)driving our 2004 mrcury monterey, i tried to accelerate from a stop light and got just enough to push us into the intersection and drift across; after that the vehicle would not move. we were told the torque converter had been stripped and needed to be replaced. it is now 2011, while driving on a freeway my wife started seeing smoke and pulled over. now we are told the torque converter overheated and blew the seals and has to be rebuilt. something in this model seems to be destroying transmissions and this in not an inexpensive past time.

It is a well cared for 2004 that all of a sudden started to have a little shake when accelerating. once i got up past 50-55ish it almost went away. i assumed i had a wheel out of balance so when i had it in for an oil change a few days later, i had them do a rotation and balance. that really didn't fix anything and it got worse. if i was accelerating up hill(which i have to do a lot since i live at the bottom of a hill) then it was like i was driving over hundreds of broomsticks that someone had lay across the road. i took it to a shop (not my usual one, but it was very close to home) to see what they thought. they looked and said cv shaft. when i was able to get it into my regular shop two days later, they looked at it and said 'found transaxle output shaft bearing on right side axle very loose causing excessive movement with right axle.' he said the right axle was basically loose where it attached to the transmission. they said they would have to research if it was actually a bushing or a bearing in order to tell me the repair cost. monday morning i get a call saying basically i need a new transmission. now the vibration isn't as bad, but is still there. it also feels like it is wanting to take off while i am driving at a constant speed. not chugging out, but like all of a sudden it gets a little surge of power then stops. almost as if someone else is tapping on the gas pedal, then letting off. this happens whether i am using the cruise control or not.

First occurrence at 43k miles. traveling at about 40 mph on main road when engine speed increased and vehicle drifted powerless to the side of the road. examination by ford advised bad trans, first time they'd seen the problem. not covered under extended warranty. estimated repair - $3500. took vehicle to aamco - initial estimate $2000 but once opened up advised that full rebuild was required due to extensive metal fragment penetration throughout system. cost - $3500. on 6/2/11 was traveling at 35mph on local road. on accelerating after a right turn, the entire vehicle shuddered and the engine speed increased. vehicle drifted powerless to the side of the road again - roughly 40k miles on rebuilt transmission (83k total vehicle miles). in checking transmission fluid level, there appeared to be water in the system. towed to ford dealer, advised that this was not a normal occurrence and they didn't see if often. advised that, based on age and mileage of vehicle, transmission should just be replaced. estimated cost - $3500. vehicle is now on second transmission at less than 85k miles.

2004 mercury monterrey van. transmission warning light appeared blinking and could smell burning transmission fluid while driving up a canyon road. stopped car off road and shut down. waited 25 minutes to allow transmission to cool. noticed some spill of fluid on road. headed back down canyon road but only traveled 5 miles down when warning light came back on. after traveling less than 1/2 mile, van came to uphill climb and slowed down to a complete stall. no room or safe place to pull car over so coasted car backward hoping no other car would be approaching. reached lowest part of road and pulled backward into private drive. car never would engage again after waiting over 40 minutes. had owner of property tow the van home which took over one hour down through dangerous canyon road. as it happened over labor day weekend, no place to drop van off for services. car engine operating but transmission not engaging in any drive gears.

I have a 2004 mercury monterey wit 71.000 miles on it. i was driving home from church vbs june 24 at 10 pm with my kids going 55 mph when the rpms started reving up. i ended up in a really bad place that could've been fatal. we were in a curve on a high traffic road with a about a 3ft ditch beside us and i was not able to pull off the road. the only thing that saved us was my husband was still at the church and was able to get to us with some friends from church and helped tow the van to our house. there was no warning just stopped moving and rpms revving up. i have 4 kids and just paid a huge down payment on this van so i have no money to fix it. ford is not standing behind their product. i have had two chevrolets in the past that didn't experience transmission problems until after 250,000 miles. please help!

While traveling in heavy traffic on i-95 south at the connecticut/new york border at 55 mph the tachometer had a sudden and dramatic rise in rpm's but all power out to the drive wheels was lost. it was as if the transmission went into neutral. luckily, we were able to pull off the highway and avoided being run over by a semi. after stopping on the shoulder with the brakes releasewd and the transmission gear selector still in drive the van proceeded to roll backwards down the hill we had to stop on. we were left in a precarious position between the guardrail and the cars and trucks still moving on the highway. luckily we weren't hit by any passing vehicles! this was a very dangerous occurance. being a common problem that has been continually reported to your agency and there is an ongoing class action suit againt ford motor company for this problem, i think there should be some kind of investigation of this problem of this problem and ford should be made to notify oi ers of this vehicle of the problem before someone does get killed or seriously injured. i feel this is definitely a safety related problem.

2004 mercury monterey - wife driving down the highway (with one child as a passenger) at 65 mph. vehicle lost all ability to accelerate. no gear. had to coast to the side of the highway (during rush hour) where there was little to no room to even exit the vehicle safely. she was stuck in the vehicle while cars and trucks sped by rapidly often coming close to hitting her. police were called and also a tow truck. the van had no movement in any gear. only had park and neutral. van was towed and the problem was determined to be a failed torque converter. specifically the splines inside the converter where the shaft coming out of the transmission engages. repair cost plus tow is $2000. luckily no one was hurt but it was a very dangerous situation. after some research there is apparantly a class action suit against ford on this issue and a nhtsa investigation underway (ea09016)

2004 mercury monterey lost power while driving 65mph on freeway. i was able to coast to the next exit ramp and called a tow truck. van is at mechanic, but i suspect it is a bad torque converter.

While traveling back to connecticut from our winter home in florida, our 2004 mercury monterey mini van's torque converter and pump shaft broke and left us on the side of the road in north carolina. luckily our grandchildren live close to where we broke down, however we are now stranded in nc for several days while the local ford dealership (crossroads ford cary, nc) waits on parts and fixes the problem. my wife and i have medical conditions that require us to see specific medical doctors, which we have to make appointments for months in advance, and we are now in danger of missing our much needed check ups. we have done some research on the issue and it appears that this has been a recurring issue with the ford/mercury mini-vans, however ford has not done anything to help the consumer. as a loyal ford customer in the my late 70's, i purchased this vehicle hoping it would last a long time and possibly be the last vehicle my wife and i purchased. ford has told us our vehicle is out of warranty and therefore not their problems, but we only have 25,000 miles on the vehicle, so there is no reason this was caused by normal wear and tear. the fact that this same failure has occurred in so many of this model vehicles indicates a design flaw, and ford needs to be held responsible for this. *tr

Transmission failure. transmission refused to engage while in traffic. parked vehicle. have not repaired yet. this is a mercury monterey with only 38,500 miles. i have already replaced the power window motor on drivers side. there are many owners complaining about this same problem. ford should recall or fix for free. *tr

2004 mercury monterey. consumer writes in regards to a defective transmission *tgw the consumer stated he noticed the transmission was starting to slip. in may of 2008 the vehicle would not go forward or backward. the vehicle was towed to a repair shop where the transmission was replaced at a cost of $ 1985.00. the consumer received a recall notice in the mail regarding the defective transmission. the notice also stated if the torque converter had already been replaced, that addressed the specific issue, he may be eligible for reimbursement. *jb

Without warning (lights, noises, messages) our 2004 mercury monterey, with only 67k miles, would not go into reverse. when we then tried to put it into drive, it would not go forward. when switched back to reverse, it then went forward! luckily our service garage is only a few blocks away. ...so it only took us a couple of hours to get it there. mechanic found magnet in tray covered with not only metal shavings, but also larger chunks of metal. luckily this happened in our alley, so there were no traffic issues to deal with and no one got hurt.

Transmission failed at 101,000 miles on 2004 mercury monterey mini-van. the transmission failed with no prior warning or occurances - all fluids and filters have been changed every 30,000 miles since van was purchased at 40.000 miles on odometer. this susequent failure included the vehilces immobility/loss of power to transmission even when in gear. this failure requires that the transmission be completely rebuilt at a expense of $2500 - assumed that the cause of failure is due to excessive metal in fluid from failure of torque converter.

On saturday july 2, 2011 we were driving our 2004 mercury monterey from the upper peninsula of michigan to our home in ohio. my wife, three children, and i thought we had a day of driving ahead of us and then the vacation would be over. suddenly, without any warning, on the highway near gaylord michigan the engine continued to run but the car was not being pulled forward. all we could do was coast to the side of the road. our van has only 67,000 miles on it and has never had any kind of transmission problem. there were no check engine or any other warning lights. we had the van towed to a repair shop, and they told us the transmission was bad and that this is a known problem with this ford mercury monterey. since it was saturday july 2 we had to wait three days (since monday was july4th) to even get a quote on a rebuilt transmission. all the rental car companies were also closed until tuesday. we finally got the car back on friday july 8th with a rebuilt jasper brand transmission in it for a cost of $3,422 plus a hotel, tow, rental car, etc. through research on the internet i have found that many other people have had this same problem with ford freestar and mercury monterey minivans.

We were driving our 2004 mercury monterey with only 50,000 miles on it, doing about 40 mph when all of a sudden, without any warning signs, the rpms increased and the vehicle stopped accelerating. it acted like it was in neutral. we were able to drift off the road onto the shoulder and discovered we had lost all the gears in our van. thank god no one was hurt, but the 4 adults and 3 children under 2 were stranded on the side of a road in the middle of nowhere 3 1/2 hours from home.

Was driving vehicle on u.s. 10 in michigan on saturday july 2, at 77mph. pulled into left lane to pass slower traffic & tachometer spun but there was no power - vehicle was coasting with what appeared to be no connection between the engine & the transmission. coasted safely to the shoulder & called a tow truck. vehicle was serviced at krapohl ford in mt. pleasant, mi. dealer informed me that the torque converter splines had worn off. repair including dropping trans, flushing valve body, flushing cooler lines, replacement of screen & several gaskets & seals cost $1682. torque converter splines should never wear off under normal use - makes me think that component was not properly heat treated. vehicle had 78,077 miles at time of failure. has been maintained regularly at recommended intervals at selling dealer (starr lincoln mercury, southfield, mi).

On sept 27, 2010 i was driving home from my job and my 2004 mercury monterey just stopped accelerating. there were not sounds, light or warnings on the dash and there had never been any. i was able to coast up onto the grass area on the side of the 2 lane road and out of traffic before the car came to a complete stop. my car would not restart. my car had 50180 miles on it at the time this happened. i had my car towed to a repair shop where a repair was made. i have all the papers regarding the repairs which included a rebuilt torque converter, the removal metal contamination throughout the unit, and the removal and replacement of the transaxle assembly.

We are the owners of a 2004 mercury monterey with just over 64,000 miles on it. i was shocked when my wife called me on the evening of june 3rd, 2011 and told me that she had gotten into the van, started it and tried to go in reverse and the van wouldn't move. she then put it into drive and it seemed to work fine for a few minutes and then it made an awful clunking sound a few times and lost power as she was driving near our home heading toward the freeway. i immediately knew it was a problem with the components of the transmission. thankfully no one was injured as she was travelling at slow speeds on surface streets just before making it onto the freeway. it scares me to think what could have happened had the problem not occured until 5 minutes later when she would have been travelling at 60 mph on the freeway. prior to the incident, there were no other signs that the transmission was having problems, no slipping or missing gears. it had always driven very smoothly. i got online and found that there were many stories like mine with the 2004-5 mercury monterey/ford freestar. i'll be having my van towed to our mechanic on monday, june 5th so i can find out the extent of the damage and cost. i won't be surprised when they tell me it is the torque converter from what i have been reading from others with my same mini-van. the van currently won't shift into reverse, idle's horribly and barely shifts into drive.

Driving on highway. sudden loss of all forward motion.the engine did not turn off, just sounded like it was in neutral. changing of gears had no response. since the, all parts have been replaced and still no response.

2004 mercury monterey transmission failed at 69,000 miles with minor wear and tear. we have had the vehicle for 5 years and 4 months and vehicle had 16,000 miles when we purchased it. transmissions are to last longer than 69,000 miles. that breaks down less than 900 miles per month which is well below the national average. in fact to further prove the point for 2 of the 5 years is was our sole vehicle for a family of 7 with 2 working adults. we contacted ford but we were within our miles of the extended warranty but unfortunately the time expiration was september of 2010. we paid $1800 to have it replaced yesterday however it broke down again yesterday and we are waiting to hear from the shop again now. if anyone google's 2004 mercury monterey transmission issues there is a plethora of results including class action lawsuits.

Transmission problems: i own a mercurey monterey 2004 van. i purchased it used in july 2008 and in december the transmission stopped working. i did have an extended warranty so it was repaired but not replaced or rebuilt. i don't know why they did not replace the transmission since there were so many complaints. in february 2011 i hadthe same problem happen again while traveling on the highway. it just stopped and i veered off the highway, had it towed. well this time i had the option of getting the same thing done or rebiuild it. the only problem is the extended warranty has expired so i had to choose to have it repaired. that repair cost me 1700.00. the job as before is only good for 12,000 miles. ido quite a bit of traveling. has there been any resolution to all the complaints that have been made. please let me know. thanks for your attention to this complaint.

Transmission failure in 2004 mercury monterey van. no warning of the impending failure. no response from the transmission in any gear. it occured while on an entrance ramp to a major highway. towed to ford dealer where it was determined that transmission failure had occured. ford rebuillt transmission installed at a cost of $3,455. i am concerned that this transmission can fail again when five kids are being transported to school in this van on that same highway during rush hour.

I am the owner of a 2004 mercury monterey minivan which i purchased new. about a month ago and literally without any sign of problems, i came out of work and discovered that my van would start up fine but would not go into gear (forward, reverse etc.) i had the van towed to the nearest ford dealership and was told that the torque converter had went out and that it would cost me $1600 to repair. after threatening to tow the vehicle to another shop i eventually got them to agree to drop the cost to $1000. i was shocked that the transmission would have such a major break down with less than 50,000 miles. after researching the internet i discovered that there are many complaints about the same problem and that it always seems to occur around the 50k mileage mark. in fact, i discovered that a class action lawsuit has been filed in ny for this very issue. please investigate and if appropriate force ford to issue a recall. i would like to be reimbursed for these repairs if it is discovered that faulty or cheap parts are to blame for this problem. thanks.

While driving in traffic with my sister & my young son, without any warning signs, our mercury monterey just quit. by the good grace of god, divine intervention, angels or whatever else may have intervened, it so happened that we had missed the exit to enter interstate 695 so the incident occurred on a busy city street instead of the highway. that being said, we easily could have lost our lives in either place, however it would have been a sure bet at 60 mph on the highway! the vehicle was towed to a garage and the problem was diagnosed as a failed transmission, more specifically, the automatic transmission torque converter. the transmission had to be replaced.

I was on my way home after picking up my 2 granddaughters and my car just lost all movement. the motor was running but when i tried to excelerate it would not move forward. i was able to coast to the bottom of the hill, where luckily there was turnoff lane. i called for assistance and then had to be towed. the girls were scared to death, i guess just knowing that we wern't able to go, it was dark and we were on a busy highway. the mechanic has informed me that it is the transmission. my car is a 2004 mercery monterey, only 77,000 miles. it has never given me any trouble. this has been quite an inconvience, especially since i work everyday and it is going to be quite an expense to replace, last quote was 2600.00, which is not easy to come by given the ecomony. after reading over 100 complaints from others sharing the same experience, i feel this is definitely something that needs to be investigated. i guess we were lucky that an accident did not occur, given the circumstances under which this happened.

I have a 2004 mercury monterey with approximately 70,000 miles. the torque converter was replaced under an extended warranty at approximately 37,000 miles. i just took the van back to the dealership because of a noise from the engine, and i am told by the mercury tech the torque convertor is going bad again, and they want $1700 to replace it again. in researching this problem i found a large number of complaints also filed for the same problem, this needs to be addressed.

The van is a 2004 mercury monterey. i was driving home from dropping a friend off to get his suv from the shop. i was driving home, and had to slow down to make a left turn at the light. i turned and went to step on the gas and there was nothing. i thought at first i had somehow bumped it into neutral. when i looked down it was in drive. i just made it over the train tracks when it came to a stop. i tried everything i could think of. i turned the van off then on went through all of the gears, and nothing happened. my wife called aaa, and had the van towed to a repair shop where we were told it would cost between $2,500 to $3,000 to replace the transmisson because the torque converter sent metal shavings through the transmisson. the most frustrating thing is we dont have the money to have it fixed, and with a family of 5 it is really hard to get around.

I own a 2004 mercury monterey that apperantly has a transmission/torqure converter issue with it. on the 5th of december me and my family were driving home from the base that we are stationed at overseas when all of a sudden i lost power in the vehicle. the rpm's shot up but never accelerated. luckily i was able to pull off the rd safley. i shut off the vehicle, restarted it put it into gear and nothing... we had it towed to a local garage out here and the mechanic said that my transmission is junk... we have not had any other problems with this vehicle except for this... no warning lights or anything came on to warn us of a possible problem with the vehicle.. we do not have the money to get this fixed and still owe about $9000.00 on this vehicle. what is ford gonna do about this????

My family and i were traveling down a rural road when our 2004 mercury monterey just lost its power to move. the engine was still running but when i pushed on the gas we didn't have any response and we coasted to the side of the road out in the country away from everything and everyone. our cell phone had no signal so i had to walk three miles to get my signal on the cell phone to be able to call for help while my wife and grandson waited in the van until i returned. i had to get the van pulled 35 miles back home and it is still setting because no one knows why it quit moving and what to do about it. i tried all gears and none of them work.

I own a 1994 mercury monterey minivan and the transmission went out with no warning while driving on a narrow road with no shoulder. i had nowhere to go except the ditch. my van has under 73000 miles on it and this is the second major repair to the transmission in less than 5 months. something is very wrong with the mercury monterey transmissions as evidenced by the large number of reports of failure and the fact that a class action lawsuit was approved against ford for this exact problem>

Sudden (and silent) automatic transmission failure on 2004 mercury monterey with 59876 miles. stopped at a signal light, proceeded on green light and accelerated to 30 mph, no problems, normal acceleration. proceeded 500 feet and stopped at rail road crossing. van lost motive power and stopped. the engine revved but van did not move. no warning, no lights,no sound, van will not move. blocked railroad crossing, pushed van to the side of the road and then got vehicle towed home. all maintenance performed at mercury recommended mileage and time. lost two transmissions on 2002 chevy venture, and bought the van based on ford/mercury reputation.

2004 mercury monterey 59.700 miles and the torque converter went out. thankfully the vehicle broke down in front of the house. after reviewing a bunch of websites, there should be a recall on this vehicle for this problem. this is a family vehicle sold to the consumers as safe. hardly, the case!

Without any warraning our 2004 mercury monterey had drivetrain issues. we were at a red light and when we went to accelerate the van did not move. we turned it off and waited a few minutes the started it back up. we were then able to park it along the road before the transmission started to not work again. we now are not sure as what to do about it. we can not afford to put money nto it to have it repaired. after reading here and on line this seems to be a issue with ford. we called ford and they said to take it to a dealer and have it looked at. i first went to the dealership and they said it would be $75.00 per hour to look at it with a window of 1 to 3 hour cost. and 1 hour minium fee.

We bought a 2004 mercury monterey with 97k miles on it in june 24, 2010...everything was fine until august 11, 2010. i was driving and all of a sudden the car will not accelerate...so i drift to the side of the road and try to get the van to accelerate but nothing happend. i had to get it towed and the transmission guy took it apart and said the torque converter needs replaced it went out...we are still waiting to see if our extended warranty covers it if not it will be 1400-1600 bucks to get it fixed. i mean we had not even had it for two months yet. i started researching and found alot of complaints on it and still nothing has been done. thanks goodness no one in my family got hurt, what will it take to get them to recall this problem and to keep people safe?

My family owns a 2004 mercury monterey. while driving through mountainous highway conditions, our transmission failed. even though the dash has warning lights, there was no warning when we lost all motive power at highway speeds. we were fortunate to make it to the side of the road without being run down by the numerous semi trucks that were close on our tail pipe going up a hill. we were more than 100 miles from home, so decided to get the repairs done in the nearest large city. we were told the transmission was useless and we needed to replace it or have it rebuilt. our vehicle had 105k miles when this break-down occurred. the mechanic found a suitable replacement transmission from a vehicle that had been in a rear-end collision, and it only had 38k miles. we chose to have the transmission replaced with the used part that only had 38k miles. of course, the mechanic kept all the old parts, and i was never in a position to see the work in progress. i was not given any specific information about the other vehicle's make and model other than the fact that it was not a mercury monterey. after doing some research, i now have concluded that it was most likely a ford freestar transmission we received as a replacement part. it has been 2-1/2 years and 22k more miles since this incident (equaling 60k total miles on the replacement transmission), and we are now taking this vehicle back into the shop again because of more transmission problems. is there anything anyone can do?

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 mercury monterey. while driving at 35 mph, the trans axle light illuminated which indicated that there was a failure within the automatic transmission. the torque converter output shaft lines were stripping which caused a sudden loss of power to the drivetrain. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where the torque converter and torque converter clutch was partially replaced. the failure occurred again; the dealer then stated that the entire transmission needed to be replaced. the failure mileage was approximately 63,000. the current mileage was approximately 100,370.

We have a 2004 mercury montery with a little over 50k miles and my husband was traveling out of state and after a few hours of driving on the highway the transmission stopped working. he is now stranded in another state 5 hours from home and 6 hours from his destination with 3 children. something has to be done about this.

While driving my daughter to school this morning, i felt like the accelerator seemed to slip, i had to stop for a bus stop as this happened. when the bus moved and i could go i pushed the gas and the engine revved but the car wouldn't move. there were numerous cars behind me on a narrow two lane road. fortunately a gentleman offered to push me off the road, i thought i was going to have to have a twelve year old boy get behind the wheel so i could push the van off the road. i had to have the van towed home, and am currently trying to figure out what to do. i just had to have the compressor and fan replaced on this vehicle. this is just one more problem in a long line of problems i have had with this van. this is the worst car i have ever owned. based on the complaints i've now found on this van same year and model i believe my next step is to contact my senator, this ranks right up there with the toyota recalls. i'm frankly very surpassed there have been no recalls yet for this lemon. i thought i was just unlucky but i see i'm far from the only one suffering from these problems. by the way this van has approximately 94k miles. not what i would call high mileage.

Going up a hill (56 mph zone) on a clear sunny day, light traffic. on the way down our 2004 mercury monterey van was placed into cruise control. after a minute rpm shot up and lost momentum, coasted to right shoulder, all of the transmission fluid spilled over the road and into other vehicles. first occurrence, no warning, no accident due to light traffic. stranded about 40 miles away from home vehicle towed to a dealership. transmission replaced.

No prior warning, working fine then not working at all... will not go into gear (engine will rev, you can shift to reverse, or drive but nothing). transmission failure on my mercury monterey 2004. i have not corrected the problem as of yet dealership says new transmission cost is $3500.

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 mercury monterey. the contact applied the brakes at speeds of 30 mph. she then attempted to regain speed but the vehicle would not accelerate. the vehicle was towed to her residence and then to an independent mechanic. the mechanic stated that the transmission had failed and would need to be replaced. the failure and current mileages were approximately 51,000.

2004 mercury monterey had torque converter/transmission failure during acceleration on the highway. there are reports of over 3,000 on the nhtsb website and only 32,000 vehicles were produced, so this is occuring in over 10% of these vehicles. i don't understand why these vehicles are still on the road and not being recalled by your agency.

Vehicle suddenly and unexpectedly lost power while wife was driving on level terrain with two passengers at constant speed of approx. 65 mph in right lane of an interstate. engine rpm increased but vehicle speed decreased. power loss was complete. fortunately a rest area was within coasting distance and vehicle was able to come to a safe stop there. engine would crank and run but vehicle would not move in any gear, forward or reverse. vehicle was towed to a ford dealer, who diagnosed transmission failure. vehicle was repaired at a cost of approx. $3,300 by replacing transmission and torque converter with ford remanufactured parts. i personally reviewed the failed transmission and torque converter when i picked up the repaired vehicle. due to the substantial core charge (approx. $600) i allowed the dealer to keep the parts for return to ford. while reviewing the parts, i was able to identify and photograph what appeared to be the root cause of the failure. all teeth of the pump drive spline (a female spline inside the torque converter) were sheared off so that the spline bore was completely smooth. (i also observed and photographed an undamaged converter for comparison.) there was no damage to the mating male pump drive spline on the transmission. the nature of this failure clearly points to a design or manufacturing defect. the failed spline teeth must have been soft or they would have damaged the mating teeth on the male spline. the failed spline component appeared to be a stamped 1/8 thick steel washer which was welded to the inside of the torque converter case. failure of this component suggests that its design thickness and strength were grossly inadequate to support the pump drive load for the service life of the vehicle. it is extremely dismaying to have the failure of a less than $2 component result in a potentially life-threatening situation and a very expensive repair bill. of particular concern is that there was absolutely no warning of impending failure!

2004 mercury monterey minivan. complete, sudden, unexplained transmission failure. vehicle would not move and made a high-pitched whirring noise when turned over, which was the transmission totally gone out. 90000 miles, bought 5 years ago from a dealer with 20000 miles, maintained excellently since then with no other problems. our mechanic said he fixed 2 other vehicles of similar mileage with same problem in the last 2 months, unusual for our rural area. he explained this seems to be a common defect of this vehicle. cost us $3000 to repair, not under warranty. the dealer would have charged $4000. ford/mercury motor company barely acknowledged the complaint, replied with a pat reponse encouraging me to visit my dealer and find a new vehicle!, and that was the extent of their customer service. in googling this problem it seems there are many other people experiencing the same problem and i even read about a potential recall because of these problems. i wish i'd never bought this car.

We were traveling down the road at about 50 mph when all forward momentum was lost. we coasted to the side of the road where we attempted to put the vehicle into gear. the vehicle would not go into any gear. transmission specialist suspects torque converter failure possibly transmission damage. this is extremely concerning since this vehicle is low mileage (59,129) and has a perfect maintenance history. *tr

Transmission went bad in my 2004 mercury monterey sometime around spring of 2005, tranny was covered under warranty so i didn't put much thought into it as it didn't cost me anything, thought it was a freak problem. last month the transmission went out in my van again, at this moment i have 62,570 miles on the van. the van died in an intersection and we were nearly re-ended we being me, my 10 year old son and my 14 month old granddaughter. i just had to take my van back to the transmission shop two days ago as it has again stopped shifting gears properly. the mechanic says it is the cooling system that cools the transmission that is causing the problem-none the less it is a recurring dangerous problem. i decided the file a complaint after finding 1132 post on edmunds.com regarding this issue. i cannot include my vin number at this time because the van is in he shop along with my registration in the glove box. *tr

While driving our 2004 mercury monterey the transmission quit working right in the middle of the road. i was able to get to the side of the road with out incident. the van only has 78,000 miles on it and would expect more than that on a major component. i'm still making payments on a van that doesn't work. to get it fixed is between $1500 to 2500. *tr

My 2004 mercury monterey had the transaxle light flashing on and off periodically. when the car would get to 25 miles per hour, it would jump into gear. we had the transmission fluid changed which resulted in no improvement. today as i was on the entrance ramp to the highway, i started to accelerate and the car did not accelerate and would not go over 25 mph. i luckily avoided a major accident by shifting it into 3rd gear. when i put it back into drive,, i was not able to get the car to accelerate. i was very worried that someone was going to hit me. *tr

I own a 2004 mercury montery.i was driving down a main road when all of a sudden, when i stepped on the gas the van quit moving. i had no warning, the rpms moved but my vehicle would not move in any gear. i managed to make it into the left turn lane on a very busy road, and had to wait 40 minutes for a towtruck, the whole time hoping i wouldn't get hit. there was no shoulder on this particular road to pull off on. it was very frightening. this could have been extremely dangerous had this happened on my way to the university. i have to drive about 40 miles on an expressway at night for my classes, if this would have happened then i could have been in alot of trouble. not just the fact of getting hit on the expressway but being a female stranded at night alone on the expressway. i hope ford is forced to fix this problem. *tr

I was driving the van then suddenly lost all forward power. the engine revved but was not making the van go forward. i was on a busy road and pulled over. i could move the shifter to park, reverse and drive but it did not make the van move at all, forward or backward. this was sudden. it was very dangerous to lose power in traffic.

I have brought my vehicle into southgate lincoln mercury in southgate mi several times prior to the torque converter repair. since the repair i have continued to experience problems with drivability. gas mileage has reduced greatly (was around 17-19) down to 13.8. the vehicle drives at high rpm's and i still experience where the rpm will kick up briefly then will go back down. my complaint to the dealer was submitted again just prior to warranty expiring and now i am stuck with a vehicle that they can't seem to repair. i continue to get that they can't identify a problem.*cw

While traveling on i 75s in our 2004 mercury monterey our vehicle suddenly seemed to have lost it's transmission. after getting us across two lanes over to the side by the guard rail we sat 2 hours in the ice and snow at a dangerous place along the road side, according to the police who waited with us with lights on. after getting towed into a ford dealer we found out our torque converter went out causing us to rent a vehicle to be able to continue onto our family vacation. how fun to vacation not knowing how much the repairs would cost and also having to add on the cost of a rental vehicle for the week. if there is anymore we can find out on a possible recall, we heard from the dealership this has been a common problem, we would really appreciate it. *tr

Was driving 2004 mercury monterey premier minivan when suddenly while in drive gear lost all drive power to the wheels. luckily there was an out to pull safely off the road, into a driveway. if this would've occurred 1/4 mile further in the roadway there wouldn't have been an out as this is a very curvy mountainous road where few places to safely exit the highway. potentially there could've been terrible injuries or worse w/4 passengers in the vehicle including my precious 2yr old daughter and handsome 4 year old boy. there was a complete loss of power talk about having no control of a situation. very scary and nerve racking. this is definitely a safety concern that needs to be a recall. this could've been a whole lot worse. first thing i did when i gt towed home was checked internet for problems with tranny and the article came up about nhtsb probe about this exact description so i felt i had to make a complaint. hope this enough description. *tr

My wife was backing out of her parking spot, put the van in forward, and discovered that it would not move. there were no indications that this event was going to happen. our repair technician had to replace our planetary gearset, because they were destroyed, the torque converter was replaced as a precaution, and the neutral switch was replaced because it was thought to be the root cause. however a broken cam switch wire was preventing the car from operating normally. when that was finally discovered, we were able to get our van back. *tr

Transmission failure: upon entering interstate 64 outside lexington, ky my 2004 mercury monterey mini-van lost forward acceleration. the tach revved high but no forward motion. came very close to being struck by a tractor trailer rig but managed to steer the vehicle off the interstate. tried placing the car in any gear but had no drive power. the only thing that worked on the transmission was park, all other gears were inoperative. monterey had to be towed to a ford dealership. investigation has indicated that the torque converter has failed. there was no warning of any problems with the transmission on this vehicle, no noises or slippage. it has approx. 82000 miles on it. i purchased this vehicle new and never had a problem before this with the engine or transmission. i feel that only my skills as a driver prevented a major accident from happening. had i not taken immediate action to change the direction of the vehicle when forward drive epower was lost i would have been struck by another vehicle. *tr

My wife was driving home in our 2004 mercury monterey when all of a sudden it lost power to the power train. the car remained on, but would not go anywhere when the gas was pressed while in gear. luckily she was not far from home and we were able to push it until we could get it to our home and call a tow truck. i am more than relieved that we purchased the used vehicle warranty from the dealership we purchased the vehicle from. it appears the transmission will be fully covered under this warranty. i noticed many other blogs and a recall investigation filed for this problem, so i thought i would report one more occurrence of this problem for this vehicle. *tr

2004 mercury monterey 4.2 liter engine, on government business trip to boston and on return trip to virginia, check transmission light came on. stopped in ct at transmission shop and they read the code for torque converter problem. i contacted ford hq and provided the information and they were not aware of any problem like this on the 4.2 liter mini van....however, there are many posting on the internet that dispute that claim. i feel that it is in the best interest of the van owners that an investigation takes place before someone is killed. *tr

We have a 2004 mercury monterey, while on the highway traveling at 65 mph, during rush hour, with our three children inside, the van dropped out of gear, all we could do is coast! no warning...nothing. they could have been seriously hurt. the engine continued to rev and the transmission just disengaged. luckily for my family, i was near a ramp and was able to coast off of the highway and into the parking lot of an adjacent business, we are looking at 2-3,000k for the repairs. we just bought this van and it is only five years old and only 112000 miles. we have done some internet searching and found that this is a common problem and occurs about every fifty thousand miles or so. *tr

My wife was driving on highway 100 w in ellicott city with my kid last evening and suddenly the minivan starting de-accelerating. she pressed on the gas pedal but the car was not moving. unfortunately, due to heavy traffic, she could not get the car to the shoulder and the car came to halt on the highway. miraculously, there was a cop who noticed the problem and helped her to get out of the car. we called towing service, who took the car to the dealership. upon diagnosis, the technician found that something in the transmission broke. there was no signs of transmission problem with the car. the vehicle is mercury monterey, 4 years old (2004 make, bought new in jan 2005) and has 50,000 miles on it. we need department of vehicle to investigate in transmission problems with 2004 mercury monterey's as it will cause fatalities on the road. fortunately, i can see my family but this horrific incident can happen with others. ford, should be liable to pay for the transmission repair/replacement. dealership provided an estimate of 3,300 dollars to replace the transmission which is unfair for a consumer in this tough economy. *tr

*tr

My wife and kids were driving our 2004 mercury monterey with 52,000 miles on it. traveling at 45 mph when suddenly the vehicle seems to shift into neutral with no prior warnings or problems. this was a very dangerous situation as the road is very narrow with few places to pull over. had this happened in traffic or at highway speed they may have been rearended. the transmission had let go. torque converter shot and a total rebuild needed. this appears to be a problem that is occurring at an alarming rate as i find many other people with the same situation. i pulled the transmission myself and had someone rebuild it for me. i then reinstalled the transmission. this was the only way i could afford to fix the problem on a vehicle my family requires. *tr

At 44,000 miles, with absolutely no warning, my transmission simply quit working. luckily i was on a small street and not a major highway. i had my van towed to the dealership from which i purchased the vehicle. turns out the torque converter had disintegrated into lumps of metal. since i had purchased the extended warranty i wasn't worried. what a dreamer! the ford people said since i had not had the transmission fluid changed at 30,000 miles (would not have prevented this problem) they didn't and wouldn't have to pay for the repair. i had it towed to another dealership who said the same thing. both dealerships claimed that they had never encountered this problem before. i have since found out it is a widely known problem. i had the car towed to aamco (i will give ford no more of my money). the mechanic there told me that the transmission ford put into these vans is too small for the engine. that is why they are all going out. it is truly a design flaw by ford. unfortunately no one is holding them responsible. the repair cost me almost $3500. somebody should do something about this. *tr

I purchased a 2004 mercury monterey van new in june 2004. it has 69k miles. i was driving on interstate 44 at milepost 46 in missouri at 70 mph when suddenly the engine revs up and the van is not engaged in gear. it was a scary experience trying to get the vehicle from the passing lane to the shoulder when traffic is heavy and you only can coast to the shoulder. i am extremely happy that we were not injured and we did not injure anyone else. we had the vehicle towed to a nearby ford dealer. the torque converter was replaced in 8 days. according to the dealer there was a nationwide shortage of the part. the service writer also indicated to me that he has personally has written repair orders on three similar models within the past year with less miles than my van. my internet search also indicated pages of similar breakdown on the ford product. i have contacted ford and they do not plan on any recall or restitution. although i have been inconvenienced and responsible for the $1,800 in related repair cost, i hope and pray that no one will be killed with this parts failure that gives you no advance warning. *tr

2004 mercury monterey 4.2 liter engine, 4 speed automatic- no warranty 38,960 miles without warning, the van stopped accelerating on freeway on-ramp and the driver had to coast to side of highway cloverleaf. when vehicle was safe from merging traffic but still on freeway shoulder the accelerator was pushed and the van would rev it's engine in all gears, forward and reverse without moving forward or reverse. since the van would not move under it's power

I was driving along at about 40 mph when my 2004 mercury monterey suddenly slipped out of gear and began slowing down. fortunately i was able to pull off the main road onto a side street so the car could coast to a stop. according to two seperate ford dealerships the problem is with the transmission. both dealerships claim the entire transmission needs to be repaired at my expense for a cost of $3500. the car only has 46,000 miles on it. upon searching the internet i discovered that this is a problem that ford has known about for some time and they refuse to issue a recall. the reason that the transmission has to be replaced is due to the thousands of transmission failures there are no parts to repair the problem. this is an expensive repair that is not the fault of the owner. there should be a recall by ford to repair these transmissions. *cn

My 3 year old was in my mercury monterey we were in the process of leaving . she turned the key 1 spot on the ignition and pulled on the gear selector. my van with my child rolled out of my driveway. hitting 2 mail boxes and a cable router before coming to a stop. i took the vehicle back to the dealer ganley mercury in brunswick ,ohio. they told me the car was made this way. i have tried every type of vehicle and had friends try this in theirs. not 1 vehicle will go into gear with out the brake depressed or will not go at all. i think there is a defect in this vehicle. nobody at ford or the dealer ship wants to talk about this, all they say is its supposed to do that. i don't think it is. if you could contact me i would be grateful. thank you. *jb
