Hit the remote control button to open the rear hatch for the 2002 mercury mountaineer. the rear hatch opened only halfway automatically, as it is suppose to open further i pushed it up, without unusual force and the entire rear window shattered, and the encasement that held it hit me in the head rather hard. it is now without a window. this is the second window replacement. the first rear window was replaced in 2004 when, during a cold snap here in ny it spidered into a crack but did not shatter. when my husband took it to the dealer as it was still under warrantly they argued at first, but then the phione started to ring and they decided it was an ongoing problem and design flaw.

Major safety concern: 2002 mercury mountaineer awd, purchased with around 79000 miles, in 2007. a few days after purchase started shifting really hard into 3rd gear, called dealer and he said to have transmission fluid changed, changed that cost 100.00. seemed to help some, now at 100,000 miles or so car will not go over 30mph. driving vehicle in busy traffic and car only going up to 30 in a serious hazard. ford needs to be held accountable for this. too many 2002 are having exact same problem. car jerks into reverse, o/d flashes, check transmission light comes on , hard jerks and shudders into 3rd gear....come on how many more people have to give up hard earned money to fix fords mistakes??? in process of trying to find a transmission shop to take this heap of junk to. *tr

Dt: the caller said vehicle stalled without warning several times. she stated that it did start back up. she took the vehicle to the dealer three times. dealer said they fixed it each time. she sent manufacturer a letter on the problem and other problems. also, the caller stated that she had the ignition switch replaced, and now when she takes it out of park something pops. dealer will not do anything else to help her with the ignition switch. *ak the day time running lights did not stay on, the consumer heard wind noise coming from the vehicle, the cigarette lighter did not work, there was a popping noise when the consumer placed the vehicle into gear. *jb

Of the many problems i've had since purchasing this vehicle, the latest takes the cake. here's the skinny of all my problems, with the latest motivating me to report a complaint to the nhtsa. hopefully, something can be done. here's a website of others with the same transmission issue: http://www.carsurvey.org/cgi-bin/fix_comment.pl where do i start. i purchased this car with 38k miles and it's been a nightmare. first thing to go was a wheel bearing at 41k, got that fixed @ $200. next to go @ 48k was the two calipers and new rotors on the front, cost $800. next @ 52k was the a/c needed to be recharged, $150. next @ 58k, the two calipers in the back has to be replaced, cost $300 (i found a good mechanic/friend). for the grand finale... i need to replace the transmission @ 61k, cost range from $1,800 to $3,400. i will fix it and dump it right away and sell it. a complete lemon!!! it should be reported to the nhtsa for an investigation. *jb
