Abs light continually comes on. on several ocassions, when applying the brakes, they go all the way to the floor with a shuddering noise. the vehicle has been in the dealership 5 / 6 times to repair this problem. the sensor has been changed and after a month or so, it comes back on again. on my last visit to the dealership, i was told mecury was aware of the problem and they were working on a solution. they said i would be contacted in a couple of weeks. that was months ago and my light is back on again. what will it take, an accident? now i am waiting for the manager to return to town to give me a call.

2002 mountaineer stalls, transmission control assembly, main control valve, and gasket had to be replaced. *ts the lift gate was sticking, and while closing it, the glass shattered, the glass was recalled, and was suppose to have been fixed. the oil light illuminated. the trim on the front door fell off while driving. there was a grinding noise coming from the rear wheels, it was determined that there was severe rust on the brake componets, the park brake shoes fell apart due to corrosion, the rear wheel bearing and knuckle assembly had excessive rust. *jb

I have a continued problem of the abs light coming on. i have had it in the shop 5-6 times. they changed the sensor and a while later it comes back on. on several occasions, my brakes have gone all the way to the floor. the dealership maintains that mercury is aware of the problem and may be working on a recall. my light is now on again and have placed a call to the dealership. i have to wait for the manager to return to town to see what he would like to do. oh, and i do have the extended warranty that i have paid over $2,000. what is that for? what will it take, my brakes to go out?

I purchased my 2002 mountaineer on june 20, 2004. when i am driving and hit the speed of 75 mph i hear a loud whistling sound and the only way to get rid of the noise is to reduce my speed to under 75 mph. i have spoken with another person who owns the same suv and he has the same problem only on a larger scale. he has had the weather stripping replaced twice and still the noise remains. i will be taking it in soon to have it checked over since i am also having another problem when i stop and apply the brakes (loud squeaking noise). *jb

I heard a scraping noise in the right rear brake when backing out of the garage, similar to the sound given when brake replacement was required. i took the 2002 mountaineer to a certified mechanic for brake replacement. when the right rear rotor was pulled the front parking brake pad fell out. on inspection the metal area that attached the pad to the brake mechanism rusted through, allowing the pad to fall freely into the drum. the mechanic said the pad scrapping the drum when i was backing out of the garage was the noise i was hearing and it rotated with the wheel. he said the car could not pass ny state inspection because the emergency brake would not hold the car when applied , rendering the brake unusable in an emergency ,and demonstrated that to me. my wife has driven the car 98% of the time since i purchased it new in january 2003. she never engaged the parking brake so the emergency brake pads, though rusty, were in good shape.*ak

Of the many problems i've had since purchasing this vehicle, the latest takes the cake. here's the skinny of all my problems, with the latest motivating me to report a complaint to the nhtsa. hopefully, something can be done. here's a website of others with the same transmission issue: http://www.carsurvey.org/cgi-bin/fix_comment.pl where do i start. i purchased this car with 38k miles and it's been a nightmare. first thing to go was a wheel bearing at 41k, got that fixed @ $200. next to go @ 48k was the two calipers and new rotors on the front, cost $800. next @ 52k was the a/c needed to be recharged, $150. next @ 58k, the two calipers in the back has to be replaced, cost $300 (i found a good mechanic/friend). for the grand finale... i need to replace the transmission @ 61k, cost range from $1,800 to $3,400. i will fix it and dump it right away and sell it. a complete lemon!!! it should be reported to the nhtsa for an investigation. *jb

The front end dash has a very loud rattle while letting up on the gas or depressing the brake the vehicle has been in the shop five times. they have readjusted the a/c lines many times, tightened items in the engine, and replaced a missing bolt in the firewall. it was fixed once that last a couple of months, but the noise is back. it will be going in the shop for the sixth time. also, there is a squeak when going over bumps. it has been in the shop twice and they replaced the ball bearing joints. however, the squeak is back.*ak

Recently, the pcv valve in my 2002 mercury mountaineer had a leak (vacuum system leak). as the vehicle began to stall as a result of this leak, while traveling 55 mph, and decelerating towards a traffic light, i lost all function of my brakes. when i stepped hard on the brakes, there was no response. however, because i equated this to possibly being tied to the pcv valve, i stepped on the accelerator to increase airflow into the engine so that i would have brake function. this gave me brake function, temporarily. however, this move was very risky, as i was approaching cars in front of me and accelerating towards them instead of decelerating, just so i could slam on the brakes and have functioning brakes. there is an apparent link between the brakes and the vacuum system...which poses a deadly situation. had i not been aware of vacuum system issues and how to mitigate them, i would have plowed into the stopped vehicle in front of me with no brakes. this occurred in the evening. i had to use this method to complete the remainder of my trip to get home, accelerating every time i needed to use brakes, because the stalling vehicle every time had no brake function. this condition put me in a very bad situation, as i also had my 5 year old in the car with me. this system should be recalled as it is unsafe. replacing the pcv valve corrected the problem. there is also no notice in the operating manual for this vehicle about this vacuum system problem, especially since the operating manual that came with this car is for a prototype software system, and doesn't even match my vehicle. i have complained to mercury/ford about this incorrect manual, but they did not offer to send me a new one, and simply took the information and didn't even respond to my concerns. *tr
