00V367000FORD MOTOR COMPANYfrom 04/18/1994 to 12/29/1995V (Vehicle)26255902/05/2001ODIFORD MOTOR COMPANY11/06/200011/07/2000
Defect SummaryVehicle description: 1995 passenger vehicles equipped with the 2.0l and 2.5l engines, and 1996 vehicles equipped with 2.5l engines. tightening of the engine cooling fan motor bearings, up to and including motor stall, can result in increased motor torque and higher than normal motor current and accompanying high motor temperatures.
Consequence SummaryOverheating of the cooling fan motor due to excessive current can result in smoke and odors from bearing grease, insulation and other internal motor components. if electrical current continues to be applied to the motor, internal motor components could ignite possibly igniting other engine compartment components.
Corrective SummaryDealers will install a positive temperature coefficient device in-line with each fan motor. ford will also extend the warranty on the engine cooling fan assembly to a total of 8 years of service or 100,000 miles from the warranty start date, whichever occurs first. if the vehicle already has more than 100,000 miles, this coverage will last until july 31, 2001.
NotesOwner notification began february 5, 2001. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673. also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle temperature gage elevated while driving at normal highway speeds and the engine suddenly shut down. the vehicle had an odor of something burning like plastic. the vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop. the independent mechanic discovered exposed wires leading to the fan and engine. the radiator was flushed, engine performance enhancer was added, spark plugs were replaced, but the exposed wiring was not repaired. the independent mechanic discovered a recall concerning the fan wiring. the vehicle remained parked for two weeks before it was taken to a local service dealer. the dealer began working on obtaining authorization for the recall remedy, but the manufacturer would not authorize the recall remedy because of the age of the vehicle. the contact is the second owner of the vehicle, but the original owner did not receive a recall letter. therefore the vehicle was never taken to a service dealer for repairs. there is a nhtsa recall, # 00v367000, regarding the engine and engine cooling. the vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the time restrictions of the recall remedy. *nm

At around 50,000 miles we noticed the housing that holds the driver\'s side airbag coming loose. we received a couple of recall notices on other things so when we took it in to get the recalls done i asked the technician at sunflower lincoln/mercury if he could check out the problem with the airbag housing and possibly fix it for us. he called us back stating that the bolts had sheered off from the inside of the housing and that they couldn\'t fix it and that we would have to pay between $300-$500 dollars out of our own pocket to get it fixed. we then called lincoln/mercury headquarters and were told that \"the housing is just like a tire and that over time it wears out and that we would be responsible for any repair costs to it\". i have a major problem when the technician tells me that the problem was the bolts sheering off from the inside and then being told it\'s my problem. this becomes a safety issue for which i believe mercury is responsible for. the problem sounds like faulty equipment and they have no intentions of doing anything in good faith about it.

6/15/03 i do not have the exact dates of problems, but i will relate my experiences. shortly after purchase used in 1999, the brake light switch, which also controls the shift inter- lock, failed. took it to the dealer and they found an open connection behind the glove box that controls the switch operation. they fixed that open connection and the switch worked fine. then the switch problem started again. tried a new switch and that failed after a few months. have gone through six or seven switches and have one now that seems to work. i purchased and installed new switches myself after the first one because ford was charging me about $15 for the part and around $90 to install. asked service people at ford and they told me that some switches work and some don't. asked another serviceperson at different dealership and was told these stop light switches rarely fail? got a service bulletin from ford stating that the front strut springs could fail but not to bring the car in until they did fail. got another bulletin stating that the main electrical connecter for the engine under the hood could fail but again don't bring the car in until this failure happens. ford did repair a failed hi-speed heater blower connection at their cost. i asked the tech why he had to raise the car and he said, poor design. poor design seems to be a common theme with the '95 mystique. by the way mine is a four banger. i guess the most troubling was the brake light switch. not only can the car not be shifted out of park, the brake lights won't work even when the manual over ride is used. nothing like not having brake lights on today's roads! the car now has about 78,000 miles. why so few? didn't want to drive with no brake lights. i see the '95 mystique/contour was nothing but problems. i don't know how service bulletins concerning front spring failure or main engine harness failure which i described above cannot be classified as recalls. robert soderlund

Vehicle was taken to the mercury dealer at 45396 and 56249 miles due to frequently running at the farthest side of nornal on engine temperature gauge (almost in the red danger zone) especially when on hills or in the mountains. we were told the car is meant to run hot. no remedy was suggested by the dealer either time. at 53486 miles, a technician at an independent smog station said he had never seen a car run so hot. he ran a fan on the engine during the smog test. this is why the car was taken back to the dealer for a check of the engine running hot at 56249 miles. on 10/17/99, the car lost power while on the freeway and came to a halt at the side of the road., steam was coming from under the hood. the car did not restrart. diagnosis at a nearby independent station revealed: vehicle had been severely overheated. all spark plugs are contaminated with coolant, and all cylinders are filled with coolant. a tear down of the cylinder head revealed that cylinder head is severely warped.

Last year in march 2001 i had a recall on my engine cooling fan. i brought my car to a local dealership to have it taken care of . the car at the time was presenting problems with overheating, excessive torque, and the check engine light was occasionally coming on. the dealership (was laplace ford in laplace, la) only changed the fuse for the fan and nothing else. at the time i brought my car in the mileage was at 84000 miles and the warranty for the fan motor only extended to 100000 miles. now the problem has become worse and laplace ford is syaing they need to charge me an excess of 450.00 for repairs when in all actuality this problem (which i thought was already taken care of a year ago) i feel should be ford's responsibility to repair. please advise me in what actions i may take to resolve this issue? thank you.*ak

I recieved a recall notice in the mail concerning my 1995 mercury mystique. when i asked the dealer what the recall involved the service advisor said it was to replaced a fuse for the cooling fan motor. after taking the car to the dealer and following their inspection they said the cooling fan would require replacement under the recall. my concern is that on your web site under the recall database for my car there is a recall listed for 1994 thru 1995 mystiques with the 2.5 v6 engine. my car has the 2.0l 4 cylinder engine. i called fords 1-800 customer service number and they told me that this recall affects all 2.5 v6 and 2.0l 4 cylinder engines on 94/95 mystiques. this does not match the information posted in your database. *ak

Problem with fan motor led to our taking vehicle into dealer. their inspection revealed severe deterioration to wiring harness insulation which service manager said might lead to a fire hazard. ford area rep contacted and offered $1,500 payment toward $2,500 bill. this all took place yesterday, june 10, 1999. i did not authorize any replacement to be done pending further conversation with ford and request that they replace defective wiring harness at no charge to me. please also note that in june 1998, i completed and filed another vehicle owner's questionanaire, this time having to do with defective wiring relating to the abs system. i received no response from that from dot or ford. this problem, having to do with defective weatherproof covering on the 22 pin electrical connector that controls abs and traction control circuits and causes inadvertent braking. i believe these are problems that need the attention of your agency before injuries or fatalaties take place.

Serpentine belt can slip when wet and making a turn because you lose power steering and engine may stop. very dangerous even though it happens at slow speed because hard steering and brakeing, not power assisted. just missed having head on collision. this has to be investigated because it may have caused some serious or fatal accidents without being noticed as the reason. have there been any internal notices about this at ford?
