Crankshaft failed under normal driving conditions. dealer repair cost was going to be $4200, although the vehicle was only 3 months out of warranty with less than 25000 miles, and was well maintained, and even though this problem was well known with this engine. note that this happened 8 years ago, but i have always wanted to formally document the problem, and just found the nhtsa complaint site.

While test driving the 94 mercury villager, with only 74000 miles, at around 40 mph vehicle shut down, and lost all power to brakes and steering, with no warning. the mechanic at the dealership insisted that this was a built-in mechanism and that this was supposed to happen occasionally to reset the computer system. of course this is completely false. they are trying to sell this vehicle in extremely unsafe condition and frankly i believe something should be done about it. the dealer, grand auto mart in nd still has the vehicle for sale for nearly $8,000. after reading the other complaints on this site, i know that this is a major repair, and would cost about $4500 to fix. buyer beware! for this dealers info, feel free to contact me. smahlman@earthlink.net. *nlm

Broken crankshaft on 94 mercury villager. many documented complaints in your database. ford oasis report ssm 04925 states engineering determined the cause was the initial tensile force set on the engine accessory belts during assembly. in feb 1995 a new crankshaft that is 2mm thicker at front was implemented. if ford is aware of their manufacturing defect, why was a recall not required? many well-maintained vehicles have performed beyond the warranty period and now consumers must pay to repair a defect ford acknowledged occurred during assembly ford refuses any assistance. very poor customer service. *nlm

My vehicle just lost power and shut down in the middle of traffic. i was able to pull over. however, the van would not restart. after the dealer had the van for three days, they concluded the crankshaft broke. now this mini-van, although a mercury, has a nissan 3.0 6 cylinder engine. it has been serviced with proper oil changes and we have not experienced any problems over the 37,000 miles we have driven it. when we approached ford about any help in repair, the door was shut. no, they said. a crankshaft just doesn't break at 60,000 miles on this type of engine. this is a family van driven for family purposes. when you are talking a $4000.00 + repair bill, it would be nice if someone acted as if they cared and went beyond a computer response, that this is not a problem ford will help us with. we purchased the extended warranty and had warranty until 60,000 miles. we were only 1600 miles out of warranty. is there any way to get ford to relook at this and somehow get some help? *ak

As my wife was coming to a stop at a traffic light at a very busy intersection in knoxville, she realized that she had lost some type of power and the tachometer registered a minimal rpm reading. at this point, the vehicle would not respond to any pressure on the accelerator. she was blocking two lanes of traffic and could move neither forward nor backwards. luckily, she was able to obtain assistance quickly from the attendants at a nearby service station. the next day we had the van towed to a mercury dealer. they pinpointed the problem as a cracked crankshaft. through my own research and contacts with local mechanics, i have discovered that this failure was due to a defective part, that there was no reason for a crankshaft to fail on a 5-year-old van with 75,000 miles. another mercury service manager indicated to me that the villager van had a history of crankshaft problems. this was confirmed when i consulted your service bulletins database. there were several service bulletins regarding crankshaft failures in the 93-95 villagers. the bulletins summarized this failure as a driveability concern. i believe this drastically understates the problem. if my wife had been on one of our local highways, traveling at a higher rate of speed , i believe the consequences of this failure would have been much harsher, possibly even deadly. i would urge you to further investigate this problem with the '94 villager and its repercussions on passenger safety. *ak

Engine shut down on 11/21/00 while traveling on interstate at 65mph. auto towed to mercury dealership. we were told we would have to replace the engine at our own expense ($4000). once engine was replaced, we started having other problems. we started to notice the smell of gasoline around the vehicle. the smell was especially bad on the inside when we turned the heat on. the dealership thought they fixed the problem by tightening the fuel line clamps, but the odor returned. the gas smell is still present. the new engine was slow to accelerate. the dealership did a fix on this by adjusting the throttle linkage. the vehicle still does not accelerate as it did originally.

The exhaust manifold has a bolt that has sheared off. this to me seems as though it is a defect in workmanship and a safety hazard. i was unaware of the problem until a mechanic noticed the bolt broke and brought it to my attention. the exhaust system is the original. this problem could cause exhuast to come into passenger compartment at any given time. the dealership lists no recall on this and say they cannot give me an estimate because they don't know how long it will take to get the broke off bolt out of the engine block. i have talked with other people that have had the same problem. it is the same engine that is in the nissan quest. i think car manufactors' should be accountable for there mistakes. i have been told the cost could be from 500 to 1600 dollars to repair this problem which is clearly poor workmanship in the area of this vehicle. please investiagte this matter. *ak

This vehicle had seven (7) of twelve (12)exhaust manifold studs shear. i was informed by the queen city service representative, that this condition has been a common occurrence with 1993 and 1994 year model mercury villagers. i was further informed that all twelve (12) studs were replaced with new studs that mercury is now installing in all villagers manufactured subsequent to the 1993 and 1994 year models. the technician at queen city mercury stated that mercury is no longer using the original studs due to the original stud's failure rate. queen city further informed me that they are routinely checking all 1993 and 1994 villagers that come in for any service for signs of the stud failure. i was informed that failing to make this repair could result in carbon monoxide fumes entering the passenger compartment. the repair cost associated with this manifold stud failure was $641.30. ford/mercury denied my request for reimbursement of the repair expense stating that, to date, there had been no mandated recall to correct this problem. i would appreciate nhtsa's review, if in fact, mercury has experienced significant failure rates resulting from defective studs.

1994 mercury villager exhaust manifold bolts failed and caused exhaust leak and warping of exhaust manifold. this is a widespread problem, and ford, and nissan (quest) are not honoring this defect. they offer a different bolt replacement, indicating a design defect. *la

The engine noise i reported to the dealer was found to be a leak at the exhaust manifold due to one or more studs breaking off in the engine block. the dealer's service rep. told me this is a common problem with the villager, which i have since confirmed at your web site. this is a safety defect, which the service rep. told me could cause exhaust fumes to enter the vehicle.

You can smell gas when i start my car; especially in the cold weather, my car also has smoke coming from the hood; upon inspection from the dealer in maryland they stated my exhaut head had a broke stud which was causing the problem. the problem would not affect the driving of the vehicle; but would cost me $1000.00 to fix. after speaking with other mercury villager owners; they also were told their vechicle had the same defect; i feel a broke stud in the exhaust head is a defect; especially since so many other villagers/pathfinders have the same problem. the smell of gas is nauseating at times. i have my invoice which states the problem. thank you. *ak

2 front engine manifold bolts sheared off, causing exhaust leak into vehicle and possible head warping problems in the future.the rear tail lights have blown bulbs on an average of 4 a year ,once resulting in a rear end collision. my ignition switch is so screwed up, it is impossible to remove the key safely so i am forced to leave it in at all times.my wiper/turnsignal switch has been a joke from day 1, the techs couldn't figure it out until the warrantee was over and tried to charge me for it. *ak

I requested bellevue lincoln mercury investigate a 'clicking' noise coming from the engine compartment. they advised me that the noise was coming from a gasket failure between the exhaust manifolds and the engine heads. the probable cause was a failure the the exhaust manifold studs. this failure allow hot exhaust gases to leak and cause heat damage and possible failure of engine or automotive components. additionally the exhaust gas may be introduced into the passenger compartment possibly asphyxiating the occupants. dealer mechanics and other engine mechanics state that this is a common problem on this year and model of mercury village vans, as well as nissan quest vans.*ak

Several of the bolts that hold the exhaust manifold onto the engine block have popped off leaving the stem of the bolt embedded in the engine. as a result, dangerous exhaust gases are seeping out into the engine area because the manifold is no longer tightly attached to the engine. in order to fix the problem the bolts must be drilled out. this is a known defect. this has occured in a number of mercury villagers that use this engine. i have personally talked with several mechanics that have indicated it is a continual proplem with this make. it did not take me long to find out that this is not an issolated insident but one that has occured in many of the villager's.
