Defect SummaryVehicle description: minivans. the fuel tank vent hose allows air to vent from the fuel tank during refueling. cracks have developed in the vent hose. if (1) the fuel tank is overfilled, not allowing excess fuel in the vent hose to flow back into the tank, (2) the vehicle is driven only a short distance after refueling and, (3) there is subsequently significant heating of the fuel tank, the fuel in the tank can expand into the vent hose and leak fuel.
Consequence SummaryFuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the vent hose.
NotesOwner notification began february 19, 2001.owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

The car smells of gas. the dealer said mercury is aware of the problem but refuses to do anything about it. the odor is overwhelming and has caused me to become ill in the vechicle. i feel this is extremely unsafe and do not know how to go about getting a response to the problem. has this been reported by other people who own a 1994 mercury villager.

There is a gas leak from the main fuel intake line at the top of the engine. it runs down the block and manifold. not only is there concern for fire but also the odor is very strong and unhealthy in the passenger cabin. this leak appears to be due to poor clamp or hose. i have had it fixed but it has returned. i am unsure of actual start date as i struggled with the gas odor and leakage from the vent hose that was recalled for over 1 year. when i finally got it fixed i noticed the gas smell did not go away, so i was prompted to look elsewhere and that is when i found this main engine fuel leak. perhaps it was leaking the whole time as the gas odor never dissipated. therefore i artificially used 4/01/1999 as the date. actually the previous, and only, owner had noticed the gas smell before i purchased but he also attributed to the fuel tank vent hose (recalled) and his atempts to fix were not successful either. *ak

Engine shut down on 11/21/00 while traveling on interstate at 65mph. auto towed to mercury dealership. we were told we would have to replace the engine at our own expense ($4000). once engine was replaced, we started having other problems. we started to notice the smell of gasoline around the vehicle. the smell was especially bad on the inside when we turned the heat on. the dealership thought they fixed the problem by tightening the fuel line clamps, but the odor returned. the gas smell is still present. the new engine was slow to accelerate. the dealership did a fix on this by adjusting the throttle linkage. the vehicle still does not accelerate as it did originally.

We smell gasoline fumes occasionally but couldn't figure out what was causing it. i read in the newspaper where an owner of a vehicle like mine, was experiencing the same problem. he found out that the smell was caused by gasoline leaking onto the engine at multiple points where the neoprene fuel lines connect to the fuel injection rails. *ak

Fuel smell - local dealer replace hose at the tank on a recall. still smell fuel, especially when the a/c or heater is put on. a mechanic by phone said he recently replaced all of the fuel hoses under the hood on another villager. i will be bringing the vehicle by to check out the problem further. the dealership did not see any other problem.

 1) fuel smell in car. dealer replaced fuel line by tank. smell continues. mechanic stated they had replace fuel hoses under the dash of another villager. another mechanic state they had replace sheered manifold bolts. 2.) a/c & heater do not cool or warm up unless you are excellerating. rear air especially has trouble. no one seems to know the answer. 3) last year i replaced two control switches for the a/c. the mechanic did something to bypass the switch and both work independently. 4.) the power steering hoses are leaking at the end and there is nothing wrong with the hoses. clamps were put on them to stop the leeks. i had hardly any power steering and none when backing out with a hard left turn. 4.) the engine lifters make a noise when the car sits up for 2 - 7 days. dealership said this is normal and would hurt nothing. 6.) no matter how many times the brake shoes and pads or changed the brakes remain low to the floor. upon quickley applying the brakes the car makes a loud noise and the brakes sound like they are bouncing.*ak

In december, we could smell gasoline vapors coming through the defrost vents especially when the van just was turned on in the cold morning. in january, we took it to phil long ford (service advisor: t. j. brown) to fix the problem and they were stumped after having the van three days. they had to call ford headquarters and ask what is going on? they found out that six fuel hoses around the engine were leaking. this is a problem with the mercury villager and the nissan quest. this could be a very dangerous situation especially for a smoker. please contact me when you can. the van has been fixed, but other people should know about this problem.

There is a very strong gas smell in the mini van, which seems to be temperature sensitive - i.e. when it is very cold, the problem occurs, then goes away when the outside temperature warms up. the smell of gas is so strong that the heat cannot be turned on in the van, which makes the van undrivable in the very cold weather. i have had the van in to the dealer, who has told me that i need to replace the fuel injector seals. *ak

Van had a strong fuel odor near the engine compartment. this odor filled the passenger compartment when the heater was turned on. upon inspection of the engine it turns out there was a leak in one of the fittings on a fuel hose leading to one of my (two) fuel rails. the leak was enough to saturate the hose and surrounding area when starting the van. i was able to get rid of most of the leak by tightening the screw on the fitting. this fuel leak is different from the fuel tank vent hose leak which i have also experienced and previously reported to nhtsa. thank you.

There was a real strong smell of fumes inside the vehicle and the smell would get worse if the heater was turned on, vehicle was taken into dealer and they replaced hoses, but the problem still occurs. *ak consumer stated that all the lights would remain on, dealer corrected the light problem, also gas fumes would come through the vents, dealer replaced a gas pipe and that did not correct the problem, again took the vehicle back they claimed the gas tank was leaking and they said it was taken out and repaired, the next morning, there was a puddle of gas under the vehicle, the vehicle was towed back to the dealer, consumer believes the dealer did more damage to the gas tank, or it was never replaced, consumer is not comfortable with this vehicle and never will be therefore she wants chevrolet to reimburse here the full amount for the vehicle, all costs for all repairs and all medical bills for the past six months she was complaining of headaches, nausea, and vomiting from the gas smell. *yd
