Defect SummaryVehicle description: minivans. the fuel tank vent hose allows air to vent from the fuel tank during refueling. cracks have developed in the vent hose. if (1) the fuel tank is overfilled, not allowing excess fuel in the vent hose to flow back into the tank, (2) the vehicle is driven only a short distance after refueling and, (3) there is subsequently significant heating of the fuel tank, the fuel in the tank can expand into the vent hose and leak fuel.
Consequence SummaryFuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the vent hose.
NotesOwner notification began february 19, 2001.owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

I own a 1995 mercury villager. i purchased the vehicle from a used car dealer. since i purchased this vehicle three years ago, i have had a recurrent problem with smelling gas fumes in the passenger compartment of the van. i have taken the van to a ford dealership, an independent mechanic, a chevrolet dealership, and an independent service station. no one seems to be able to locate the source of the gas smell. i am concerned about my safety and the safety of my children. gas fumes are volatile, and if they are strong enough for me to detect the odor, then i feel the van is unsafe to drive. i have tried several times to have the problem repaired, but no one seems able to detect the source of the problem. i have contacted ford motor company directly, but i received very little information from them. i have read several complaints on the internet of other vehicle owners with the same problem. i have read where other vehicle owners have contacted ford motor company regarding this problem. when i called ford, they told me they had received no other complaints of this type. i feel there is a problem that should be investigated. my main concern is the safety issue of driving a defective vehicle. *jb

The van started to sputter and the engine cut out while driving on the highway at 60 mph. i managed to coast to the side of the highway and notice smoke entering the passenger compartment. the smoke didn't smell like steam from overheating but a thick black smoke. i moved a safe distance from the van and contacted the police and fire department. the engine compartment burst into flames by the time the fire department arrived. the van was a total loss and the estimated damage was $13000. the insurance company wrote off the vehicle and only paid $9000. i suspect the problem of fuel vapours (appears to be common in the mercury villager) in the engine compartment were ignited by a spark from the plug wires from rain entering the engine compartment at highway speed. the dealer had replaced the fuel filler gasket under a recall a month earlier.

This problem of raw fuel smell occurs mainly in the winter months but has occured in the summer on occasion. the van has been to the dealer approx. 10 times for this problem. this condition has caused me to leave the vehicle outside garage when it occurs for fear of the fuel vapors and hot water heater and furnace. mercury cannot find out what the problem is. they have fixed several items thinking it was fixed, but to no avail. my wife has been driving twice in a snow storm when the condition occured. she had to roll down the windows to get fresh air, if she would have been stranded on the road, no telling what she would have done. mercury has been advised of the problem and has put our vehicle under extended warranties to cover the problem when it occurs. also, they have offered us a $1000.00 voucher for the purchase of another mercury vehicle. the voucher is not the answer, nor is the extended warranty. this condition could prove to have long term health effects on my now 4yo daughter and my wife as fuel odors (benzene)is cancer causing. my family has been exposed to abnormal amounts of these products. this problem needs to be fixed for the sake of the safety of the families that depend on these vehicles. i noticed that there are several complaints logded and 1 tsb issued by mercury in regards to a fuel cap needing sealed (which they have done and wasnt the problem!) thank you for your attention in this matter.

After starting the car, particularity in colder weather, there is a strong smell of gasoline in the passenger compartment. upon engine inspection, there is a noticeable gasoline wetness under the fuel injector. a number of visits to a local dealer in white plains produced we smell it but cannot find it response. new clamps on the rubber house under the fuel injector where wetness was observed did not prevent the problem. the problem appears progressive. currently (one year later), the smell of fuel is constant. *nlm

01/02/1998109/01/1994
There have been 2 fuel hose failures and 1 recent hose recall. i believe there was either a defective purchase of fuel lines or defective specifications for the early 95 model. the 1st failure was for porosity where the fuel seeped through the hose when it was cold but sealed after warmup. the company was notified but declined. i have a copy of the letter sent. the most recent failure was a 1/16 th hole in the line to the fuel injector. the engine compartment was bathed in 10 gallons of gas over 7 miles before stopping to investigate the odor. there was also a recall for the filler tank hose due to defective material. i suspect the defective material or spec was used for all fuel lines in the early 95 model.
