Defect SummaryMitsubishi is recalling model year 2008-2009 lancer and lancer evolution vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the states of connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, iowa, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, virginia, west virginia, wisconsin and district of columbia. in areas where heavy road salt is used in the winter, a long term exposure to a mixture of melted snow with salt thrown up by the other vehicles on the road may cause a water-salt mixture to adhere to the front impact sensors.
Consequence SummaryThis coating over time may cause corrosion of the sensor. in the event of a vehicle crash of the type that would deploy the airbags this type of short-circuit may cause a delay in the deployment of the airbags which could result in driver or passenger injury.
Corrective SummaryDealers will install new front airbag sensors that have improved corrosion resistance. this service will be performed free of charge. the safety recall began on november 27, 2009. owners may contact mitsubishi customer relations department at 1-888-648-7820.
NotesOwners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov .

Tl*the contact owns a 2008 mitsubishi lancer. while driving approximately 60 mph, the contact crashed into a drainage ditch. the vehicle was severely damaged and none of the air bags deployed. one of the occupants was moderately injured. there were no warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. the dealer could not determine the cause of the failure. based on the location of the air bag sensors, the contact would have to drive 70 mph in order for the air bags to deploy. the failure and current mileages were unknown.

Hi my name is fernando santiago and the reason i'm writing this email is because i'm an owner of a 2008 mitsubishi lancer that i lease on april of 2007. now the problem is that i was driving the other day and my side airbags on my driver side deployed for no apparent reason i could of killed myself or cause a major accident. i took the car to the dealer and services said that they need to get the car checked out i explain to them that i didn't crash the car i was just driving but i guess they don't believe me when there's no damages to the body of the car. now they come back and tell me that mitsubishi is not going to fix the damages and for me to contact my car insurance and make a report so they can fix the problem b/c the warranty is not responsible for what happened and they not giving me a loaner car. i been a loyal customer with this company my 1st car was a galant i think they should take into consideration that i'm leasing a car with this company and help me out by getting my car fix at no cost. this is a safety issue is not like i cause the damages if it was up to me i wouldn't even want this car back no more b/c i have kids and is not a very safe ride. so what i'm asking here if that if mitsubishi want to keep me as a loyal customer and keep having me leasing cars from their dealer i would appreciate if they go out their way just how they do when they selling a car and help me out here, i'm loosing work hours and my kids are loosened days of work b/c i don't have a car to get back and fourth. i look forward to hear from you. *tr
