Defect SummaryVehicle description: passenger vehicles: mirage model vehicles equipped with 1.5l engines; montero sport models equipped with 3.0l engines; and montero models equipped with 3.0l engines. the bolt securing the crankshaft pulley can become loose and the pulley could fall off the vehicle.
Consequence SummaryThe condition can result in a loss of power steering assist, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryOn the mirage vehicles, the dealers will install a new, improved crankshaft pulley bolt on the older engines. on new engines which already have the improved bolt, the dealer will tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to the correct torque specification. on the montero models, dealers will tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to the correct torque specifications. if the bolt is damaged, it will be replaced.
NotesOwner notification will be performed in five separate owner mailings, with the first mailing beginning october 31, 2000.owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact mitsubishi at 1-800-222-0037. also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

 Tl*the contact owns a 1997 mitsubishi mirage. while driving at an unknown speed, an unknown instrument panel light illuminated. the engine stalled and the vehicle was towed. a local mechanic stated that it would cost $2,200 to repair the vehicle, however the contact does not know what needs to be repaired. the # of cylinders, purchase date, and mileage information were unknown.

 Recall 00 v 311 001/crankshaft pulley bolt: vehicle taken for appointment at south lake mitsubishi, morrow, ga; phone# 770/603-6225. dealer informed consumer that dealership was out of parts. they tightened pulley bolt, and advised consumer not to call them until parts have arrived. parts arrived, and currently they want to charge consumer for parts. asking help from nhtsa in this matter. *ak recall was complete with no charge to consumer. *slc

 After receiving the recall notice one day before the failure, the dealer informed me that the parts would require a 9 day wait. the vehicle engine now operates worse than it ever has before and has cost over 3000 dollars in additional repairs brought on by the failure. dealer was very belligerent and uncooperative in the recall. i actually had to push my car two blocks to the service center from where it was parked(after part failure).*ak
