| While heading home from work, i got the surprise of my life. i was driving and my brakes went out. luckily, i was heading home after the rush hour otherwise i would have been in a major accident. i got off the gas and steered the car to an embankment to slow the momentum. the only logical thing to do at this point was to engage my emergency brake. i called the mechanic immediately who advised me not to drive the car and that they will tow it to the shop. upon inspection, he informed that the brake booster system (hydraulic brake booster system) as been compromised and it seemed like just faulty manufacturing.thinking this was an easy fix, i searched for the part. a new surprise appeared, the part was over $1400.00. then i found this site. i will attempt to contact the manufacturer and see if they can resolve this issue. if not, mitsubishi will never have me as a customer ever again. | |||

| Our 2001 mitsubishi montero ltd. experienced a near complete brake failure after the vehicle had been parked overnight. my wife was taking our children to school when the vehicle would not stop at an intersection. to avoid running into traffic, she was forced to throw the vehicle into park because there was less than 10% braking power, even after pumping the brakes several times. there was a strange noise coming from the engine compartment near master cylinder assembly. local dealer in murrieta, ca told us that the vehicle already had been serviced for hbb accumulator recall, and that the vehicle did not qualify for repairs. also mileage was over 150k at 184k. we had the accumulator replaced by another certified mitsubishi mechanic which solved the braking problem. 6 months later, we experienced a second brake system failure, also losing about 90% of braking power. this time the brake and abs lights on the dash came on and a buzzer sounded continually. the problem was initially intermittent, but now the lights and buzzer stay on continually. took vehicle to the same mechanic who fixed the hbb accumulator and after diagnosing the vehicle he stated that the hydraulic control unit was malfunctioning. the vehicle is currently awaiting repairs. i am writing the complaint due to the fact that the loss of brake power is nearly total and without warning. we avoided serious accidents only by divine providence. it seems that any brake system on a modern vehicle out to allow for some subsystem failures and remain able to stop the vehicle. i have heard of abs or booster failures on other vehicles, yet they maintain the ability to stop the vehicle, that seems to not be the case with the mitsubishi montero. it also would seem that the manufacturer has had ample opportunity to remedy this situation since 2001 and yet seems unconcerned that their design is so significantly flawed. | |||

| I was driving my vehicle, suddenly my brakes fail. i almost struck a motor vehcle and a pedestrian. my brake pedal was very hard. i had my mechanic check the vehicle.my brakes pads were fine. i later learn from the mitsubishi dealer that i need a abs hydraulic unit. the repair is very expensive. my car is in good condition only 58,000 miles. mitsubishi refused to cover the parts. at this moment the car is park. can't seems to understanding how an abs unit fail suddenly leaving the car with no brakes. believed it's a manufacture defect. | |||

| My 2001 mitsubishi montero (full size xls) is making loud sounds when i apply the brakes. i understand that there was a recall on the hydraulic brakes booster accumulator. when the car was still very new this recall was conducted and my vehicle was fixed according to dealer records. now i am having the same problem again and the dealer and mitsubishi motors say it is my problem now. if their recall does not work then they should be liable, not me. this is a safety issue, other people have had their brake fail completely and not be able to stop because of this issue. mitsubishi should have corrected this problem free of charge until they get it right, not just the first time! i will never buy mitsubishi again! this consistent problem is putting peoples lives at risk. *tr | |||

| Defective hydraulic brake booster accumulator (nhtsa id#01v254001) on my 2001 montero caused my brakes to fail while stopping at an intersection which resulted with me rear ending another vehicle! this happened over 1 year ago and the defective part has been making a terrible sound while braking for over 2 years. everytime i performed maintenance on my vehicle. no one could confirm what was causing this noise. i just found out today (06/08/2004) what the part is and that it's known to fail, causing crashes what happened on 03/10/2003. i was cited for failure to yield, but contested that my brakes failed at the point of avoiding the car in front of me. i had the vehicle checked several times and no one knew what was wrong with the vehicle? the brakes would continue to fail if i came to a fast stop and i have been driving the vehicle very carefully since this accident. luckily i came accross the nhtsa website and discovered that i had a defective part!!! accident caused my vehicle $1,700.00 in damages and the other vehicle damage. also (not sure $ / covered by insurance) how do i go about filing a claim for my vehicles damage of $1,700.00 and getting this part exchanged??? the mitsubishi dealer i purchased my 2001 montero from went out of business years ago. *ak | |||

| I am a second owner of a 2001 mitsubishi montero sport that i purchased from a mitsubishi dealership. the original owner was notified of a recall for the service brakes, hydraulic foundation components and subsequently had the vehicle repaired in 2001. two weeks the vehicle began having the same issue. it is my understanding from both mitsubishi corporate offices and my local dealership that they are no longer responsible for the recall as they complied with the initial repair. the part has lasted only 6 years and is now defective again. recalls should repairs should last longer and be covered for the life of the vehicle. it seems that the revised part was not properly corrected. there should be some obligation on the part of mitsubishi motors to see that the parts that were re-manufactured under the recall to last a bit longer than six years. they apparently did not do any justice for the consumer. *jb | |||

| Regarding nhtsa recall campaign number: 01v254001 i know there are extremely similar complaints to mine regarding this bulletin (used google to find them) i noticed strange noises when depressing brakes in my 2001 mitsubishi montero. had it looked at by 2 separate independent mechanics who determined an issue with the hydraulic unit. item is dealer only. so i researched the issue on the web only to find the exact symptom description was covered in an nhtsa recall bulletin. i promptly contacted my lancaster, pa mitisubishi dealer and was told that my vin number was not included in the recall. my car is unsafe to drive due to a defective brake unit and they want me to pay to have it looked at? this is ridiculous. i have already had three other recall related issues fixed. i also called the mitsubishi national customer hotline and was told the same thing. i am very disappointed in mitsubishi. i feel i have no recourse..please help! *jb | |||
